Maher Breaks Down Why Californians Should Vote No on the Newsom Recall (Video)
Bill Maher
On the latest “Real Time,” Bill Maher spent several minutes talking about the upcoming California recall vote to remove Gov. Gavin Newsom from office, and during the discussion made a convincing case for why people need to vote against it.

First though, he kicked the discussion off with the usual mid show gag, this time where he showed viewers a (fake) list of various weird people trying to become governor of California in the recall who were only slightly weirder than some of the real-life candidates. Which was of course the joke; Maher wanted to make it clear just how stupid and awful this situation is). You can watch that at the top of the page right now.

After the mid-show gag, Maher got into the ins and outs of the recall itself. Now, a lot of the context was left unsaid during the chat, so to catch those of...

Andrew Yang Likely To Run For NYC Mayor Succeeding Bill De Blasio – Reports; Democratic Primary This June
Image
Former Democratic presidential contender Andrew Yang is planning to enter the race to succeed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio in November.

The former tech executive, who was born in upstate New York and has lived for years in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood of Manhattan, has been telling New York power brokers that he intends to run although no announcement is expected until next month, according to new reports Friday. The Democratic primary is in June.

Those Yang has tapped for advice recently are said to include NYC City Council Speaker Corey Johnson. He plans to meet with Rev. Al Sharpton next week when he returns to the city from Georgia, where he has been trying to help Democrats in two heated U.S. Senate runoffs. And he has called on two prominent political strategists who worked for former Mayor Michael Bloomberg as advisers, according to the New York Times Friday.

Staten Island Is Trump’s New York City Stronghold. Can the Dems Win It Back?
In 2016, Donald Trump became the first presidential candidate since James Polk to lose both the state he was born in and the one where he resides. New York rejected the real estate scion by a margin of more than 22 points, and the gap was even greater in New York City, Trump’s hometown, where Hillary Clinton whooped the president, earning 79 percent of the vote.

There was only one corner of the city where that trend didn’t hold: Staten Island. In the “forgotten borough,” Trump banked 95,612 ballots to Hillary Clinton...

SXSW 2015 Announces Midnighters Lineup Keeping Fest’s Tradition For The Twisted
The South (1988)
While Hollywood savors The South by Southwest Film Festival as a testing ground for big comedies, one area of the fest that is definitely edgy, is its Midnighter section. Today, the 22nd annual SXSW announced 11 genre films, nine of which are world premieres, comprised of thrillers, sci-fi, dark comedies and horror as part of its Midnighters section as well as their shorts and music videos.

SXSW’s strength with absurd and Z grade fare is clearly evident in its Midnight short lineup where such kinky titles like Anal Juke (which is billed as the director’s “dream about my ex-boyfriend and the uneasy atmosphere of Japan after the earthquake are remixed”) and Kiss Kiss Fingerbang are receiving play slots. Or how about Crow Hand!!! which reads as a “Caw-tionary tale!”

The 106 shorts selected are from a record 4,935 submissions, a 16% uptick from last year. In talking with Deadline today, SXSW producer and senior programmer Jarod Neece,...
