The Emmys Overlooked The Real Best Limited Series Of 2024
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

The big Limited Series winners of the 77th Emmy Awards nominations are "The Penguin" (which retold "The Sopranos" in Gotham City), and the chilling drama "Adolescence." But there's one show that got shut out, FX's "Say Nothing," that's all about taking action for your beliefs. I'd be remiss if I didn't stand up and demand justice for the series, which was the best new television show I watched in 2024.

Created by Joshua Zetumer, "Say Nothing" adapts Patrick Radden Keefe's bestselling nonfiction book "Say Nothing: A True Story of Memory and Murder in Northern Ireland." That true story stretches from the 1970s to the 2010s, following Northern Irish youths who joined the Provisional Irish Republican Army (Ira) to fight for a united Ireland. Some of those youths, like Dolours Price (Lola Petticrew/Maxine Peake) and her sister Marian (Hazel Doupe...

Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman will also exec produce through their Playtone banner. Playtone and Apple most recently teamed on the World War II series Masters of the Air. Taron Egerton's Video Game Movie Is a Streaming Hit
Image
As video game film adaptations continue to find success on streaming platforms, the same can be said for video game movies based on true events. Tetris, starring Taron Egerton, is a film that can be described in many ways, but a video game adaptation, it has become a streaming hit on Apple TV+ since its release in 2023, showing that even the stories behind these iconic titles are just as interesting as the game itself.

According to FlixPatrol, Tetris landed at #4 on Apple TV+'s Top 10 Movies in the United States on July 15, 2025, sandwiched between The Gorge and Wolves. Tetris is based on a true story where Dutch game developer Henk Rogers (Egerton) travels to Russia to acquire the rights to Tetris before the GameBoy's release, and how it became an iconic game to this day. However, this mission is far from easy, as it was during the Cold War era,...

Taron Egerton's Cold War Thriller With 81% on Rotten Tomatoes Is Climbing the Streaming Charts 2 Years Later
Image
In 2019, Taron Egerton wowed audiences with his portrayal of British singer-songwriter Elton John in Rocketman. Four years later, the actor played an entirely different real-life figure, that of video game designer and entrepreneur Henk Rogers, in the 2023 biographical thriller Tetris.

According to FlixPatrol, after a lengthy absence from Apple TV+'s Top 10 Movies list, Tetris has made a remarkable return to the streaming chart and is, as of July 13, ranked No. 4, up two spots from the day before. The only movies ahead of Tetris on the Top 10 list are new releases from earlier this year: The Gorge (No. 3), Echo Valley (No. 2), and Fountain of Youth (No. 1). The rest of the Top 10 chart is made up of a mixture of new and older releases, with Wolfs at No. 5, The Instigators at No. 6, Greyhound at No. 7, Ghosted at No. 8, The Family Plan at No. 9, and Luck at No. 10.

‘Say Nothing’ star Anthony Boyle on playing Ira activist Brendan Hughes: We ‘get to the humanity as opposed to the mythology’
Image
Portraying a real person in Say Nothing was "a great honor," Anthony Boyle tells Gold Derby about his role as renowned Irish activist Brendan Hughes. "This one felt really special, because it was so close to home. I used to walk past the mural of Brendan Hughes coming back from school, and you'd hear folk songs about the guy." (Watch our full interview above.)

Say Nothing was created by Joshua Zetumer, based on Patrick Radden Keefe’s acclaimed nonfiction book Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland. Set during the height of the Troubles, the nine-part drama follows Belfast sisters Dolours Price (Lola Petticrew) and Marian Price (Hazel Doupe) as they become deeply entangled in the Ira's militant campaign. At the center of the story is the 1972 abduction and murder of Jean McConville, a widowed mother of 10, through which the series explores the emotional and ethical fallout of political violence.

‘Say Nothing’ Stars Lola Petticrew and Anthony Boyle Dig Into the ‘Dirty, Complex War’ That Was the Troubles
Image
Lola Petticrew and Anthony Boyle have known each other for almost 20 years, ever since they were a couple of kids from West Belfast looking to break into acting. The first play they did together was a local production of “Romeo and Juliet,” the mere mention of which makes Petticrew’s stomach churn. “We were on a chessboard. Four people came to see it; two of them left,” Petticrew, who uses they/them pronouns, said with a laugh during a recent joint Zoom interview with Boyle. “I had Goth makeup on; Anto looked like Ziggy Stardust. That was a s—show.”

Their many subsequent TV and stage collaborations “incrementally got better,” as Boyle put it. (And they’ve each done well on their own: Petticrew costarred with Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the 2023 indie “Tuesday” and Boyle appeared in “Masters of the Air” and “Manhunt.”) But none had the impact of “Say Nothing,...

‘Say Nothing’ Creators and Cast Talk the Pressures of Portraying the Struggles of Northern Ireland: ‘You Have to Earn the Right to Tell That Story’
Image
As an American, writer Patrick Radden Keefe knew tackling the story of Northern Ireland during the tumultuous 1970s in his book “Say Nothing” would be a challenge.

From an outsider’s perspective, native readers would not be easily convinced his interpretation of The Troubles was worth reading. However, the book went on to spend six weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list, quelling his fears of misrepresentation. As he celebrated the book’s FX adaptation with his writer and crew, he emphasized that the doubts he once had made success all the sweeter.

“There’s a responsibility. I think that’s the price of admission, the price of trespassing into someone else’s world, be that an American writing about people in Belfast or a guy writing about young women. You have to get it right,” Keefe said. “You have to earn the right to tell that story. That...

“All I thought about was Elvis…”: Austin Butler’s Brutal Confession on How He Prepared for ‘Masters of the Air’ Makes Me Want to Watch It Again
Image
Created by John Shiban and John Orloff, Apple TV+’s war drama miniseries Masters of the Air, starring Austin Butler, Callum Turner, and Anthony Boyle, received positive to mixed reviews from critics and audiences upon release. Based on Donald L. Miller’s book of the same name, the story follows the actions of the 100th Bomb Group during WWII.

Critics at the time shared that Masters of the Air is ‘an absolutely fantastic television’ that goes on to depict the experience of pilots during World War II. Even though it received a positive to mixed response, audiences were concerned about the accuracy of the story and noted that the story had omitted a lot of parts from the actual story of the 100th. However, it’s Austin Butler’s experience that can change anyone’s mind about whether to re-watch the show or not.

Image
Disney+ U.K. originals “Extraordinary” and “Shardlake” will not be returning to the streamer for further seasons, Variety has learned.

Edgy comedy “Extraordinary,” which stars Máiréad Tyers and Sofia Oxenham as a pair of chaotic flatmates living in a world of superpowers, had already aired two seasons, with Season 2 ending on a cliffhanger as Jen falls into a void. It will not return for a third.

“Shardlake,” a four-part historical mystery series set in Tudor times starred Arthur Hughes, Sean Bean and Anthony Boyle, launched its first season last summer. It will not return for a second.

“Disney+ Original series ‘Extraordinary’ will not be returning for a third season on the service,” said a rep for the streamer. “We’re so proud of the hilarious, award-winning series brought to life by the incredibly talented British and Irish cast and crew, our production partners at Sid Gentle Films, and the exceptional...

‘Kneecap’ Dominates Irish Academy Awards Nominations With 17 Nods
Image
“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.

Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.

“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

Every Band of Brothers Show, Ranked
Image
When Band of Brothers was released, it came just three years after the dominant success of Saving Private Ryan. The show debuted in 2001 and showed an extended and quality look at the reality of life in the heart of World War II. Easy Company's journey quickly became a mainstay on HBO, as the prestige show drew audiences in droves. Since its release, it has remained in a class of its own and continues to influence war movies and shows today. Yet, despite originally being one-of-a-kind, other shows have joined its universe.

Stephen E. Ambrose's book inspired Band of Brothers, but the story of Easy Company could not be the end of such a brilliant series. Masters of the Air and The Pacific both debuted in the aftermath. The Pacific premiered in 2010, while Masters was released on Apple TV+ in 2024. All were based on real-world American warriors during World War II,...

FX's Say Nothing Is A Proper (And Necessary) Kick To The Teeth For Irish-American Viewers
Image
/Film has proudly declared the FX mini-series "Say Nothing" some of 2024's best TV, and I could not agree more. Based on an acclaimed non-fiction book by Patrick Radden Keefe, "Say Nothing" is (as the book is subtitled) a "True History of Memory and Murder in Northern Ireland." The story chronicles a half-century of political dissent, threaded through the disappearance and murder of single mother (and alleged British informant) Jean McConville. The two characters we most follow through that thread are Dolours and Marian Price, two sisters inspired to join the Irish Republican Army (Ira) by the failures of peaceful protest and their family's long association with the organization.

Quick history lesson: in 1921, Ireland was partitioned between the 26 free counties and the six Northern counties that remained under British rule. With a majority population of Protestant Unionists, these counties would seemingly never have a popular majority to secede. The Catholic Republicans in Northern Ireland,...

The Marvel Character You Likely Didn't Realize Was Played By A Say Nothing Star
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

FX's mini-series "Say Nothing" arrived back in November, but despite that late release date and its invisible advertising, it managed to sneak in as some of the best TV of 2024. The series is based on a 2018 nonfiction book by Patrick Radden Keefe, the full title of which is "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland."

The book and series' story spans decades, focusing on "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland and the scars they left. The Troubles refers to the terrorist campaign waged by the Provisional Irish Republican Army and British forces' attempts to suppress it, which raged from the 1960s until a ceasefire in 1994.

One of the key figures in this narrative is Brendan Hughes, an Ira leader who in middle-age wound up disillusioned; not with the cause, but with his former friend (and...

James Norton Has Bloody Head Filming New Netflix Series 'House of Guiness'
Image
James Norton is hard at work on his new Netflix series!

The 39-year-old Happy Valley actor sported fake blood on his head as he filmed scenes for the upcoming House of Guinness series on Monday (November 25) in Liverpool, England.

According to Deadline, the series is “billed as an epic story inspired by The Guinness family, a European dynasty made famous by the drink they brew. Set in 19th-century Dublin and New York, the story reimagines the period immediately after the death of Sir Benjamin Guinness, the man responsible for the extraordinary success of the Guinness brewery, and the far-reaching impact of his will on the fate of his four adult children, Arthur, Edward, Anne, and Ben, as well as on a group of Dublin characters who work and interact with the phenomenon that is Guinness.”

The cast also includes Jack Gleeson, Louis Partridge, Anthony Boyle, Emily Fairn, Fionn O’Shea, Seamus O’Hara,...
