Frightfest 2020: ‘Held’ Review
Image
Stars: Jill Awbrey, Bart Johnson, Rez Kempton, Zack Gold, Jener Dasilva, Tessa Munro | Written by Jill Awbrey | Directed by Travis Cluff, Chris Lofing

A lot of movies begin with an overhead show of a car driving down a long deserted road. Ominous, sure, but something we’ve seen many many times before. That is, though, perhaps where the “same old” ends with Held.

I do love Frightfest, and in the midst of many of their festivals I’ve discovered a bunch of movies I’ve enjoyed. Held, directed by Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing (The Gallows), and penned by Jill Awbrey, is a mystery horror film about a couple who are going through strains in their marriage and head off for an anniversary getaway for their ninth year, when things become even more difficult for the two of them after they are held hostage in the hi-tech and modern vacation...

Q&a: Filmmakers Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing Discuss Bringing The Hangman into the Online Realm for The Gallows Act II
After haunting Beatrice High School drama students in The Gallows, The Hangman returns with a vengeance this Halloween season in The Gallows Act II, and with the film now in theaters and on VOD and Digital from Lionsgate, we caught up with co-writers/directors Travis Cluff and Chris Lofing to discuss expanding the mythology of The Hangman, reteaming with Blumhouse, and how the marketing campaign for The Gallows impacted their story idea for the sequel.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Travis and Chris, and congratulations on The Gallows Act II! Did you always envision doing a sequel to The Gallows? How did the idea for the follow-up film come about?

You know when you set out to make a movie, you really just focus on making the best singular story as possible, and being indie guys, filming outside the system, we had no idea how...

The Gallows: Act II Directors Talk Bringing Back the Hangman [Exclusive]
Chris Lofing
The Gallows remains one of the true modern Hollywood success stories. Released in 2015, the micro-budget horror flick was made for just $100,000 and went on to gross a staggering $43 million at the global box office. Now, directors Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff are finally back with a sequel, The Gallows Act II, which brings back The Hangman for more horror goodness this Halloween.

I was fortunate enough to speak with the filmmaking duo, Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff, ahead of the movie's release. We talked about the relatively long gap between installments, how they feel about found footage and much more.

Just to start out, I think there have been a little bit confusion about where this movie was. There were reports that it had been finished for a little bit. So what was the process? How long have you guys been working on this? And at what point was it finished?...

The Gallows Act II Interview With Chris Lofing and Travis Cluff
Here’s a fun fact: apparently, I’m Dread Central’s resident expert on The Gallows. This mostly stems from the amount of internet brawls I’ve been in over my predominantly positive review of the film. In my long history as an internet person, I’ve never published anything as controversial as a 4 star review for The Gallows. […]

Chris Milligan in The Gallows Act II (2019)
The Gallows: Act II Trailer: The Hangman Is Back and Thirsty for More Blood
Chris Milligan in The Gallows Act II (2019)
At long last, we have a trailer for The Gallows Act II. This is a sequel that has been in the works for quite some time, with reports of test screenings dating as far back as 2017. Sure, long-delayed releases are rarely a good sign for any movie, let alone a low-budget horror movie. That having been said, for those who enjoyed the first entry, this looks very much like it was cut from the same cloth as The Hangman is back for more blood.

The trailer is very much just a teaser and opts to focus on one scene for most of its 90-second runtime, as opposed to showing us all that much. We see some teenagers gathered around, reading a play all about The Hangman. Things then get a little funky in a not-so-good, horror movie kind of way, before they rapidly escalate to deadly. We then see several...
