A writer’s screenplay is optioned for a fee tied to the film’s budget. That budget is later increased when a big name is brought on to star. Are the writer’s managers, who’re also producers on the movie, obligated to disclose the bump and renegotiate their client’s pay?
The answer to that question could be yes, with an appeals court reviving a lawsuit from screenwriter Kurt McLeod against Zero Gravity Management over an alleged conflict of interest when it negotiated his deal for writing Copshop. On Thursday, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed dismissal of the suit from a federal judge, who found last year that Zero Gravity founders Eric and Mark Williams don’t have to face claims accusing them of prioritizing their payouts for producing the movie at the expense of their client by failing to disclose that the film’s budget had been substantially raised.

One of the highest rated action thrillers in the repertoire of Gerard Butler is now available to stream for free. Butler has become synonymous with the action movie genre thanks to roles in the likes of Olympus Has Fallen and its sequels, the crime thriller Den of Thieves, Plane, Greenland, 300, and more. But one of his lesser-known forays into the explosive world of action is also one of his most critically acclaimed, and you can now watch it for nothing.
Titled Copshop, the action thriller was released back in 2021, and stars Butler alongside another action icon, Frank Grillo, as well as Alexis Louder, Toby Huss, and Chad Coleman. The movie is now available to stream via Amazon Freevee, and finds Butlers hitman tracking Grillos mysterious con artist to a small town, where they find themselves in jail alongside each other. You can check out the official synopsis for Copshop below.

If a writer options their screenplay for a fee tied to the film’s budget and that budget is later increased, is their manager obligated to disclose the bump and renegotiate their pay if the manager is also a producer on the project?
The answer to that question appears to be no, at least in the case of screenwriter Kurt McLeod, who sued Zero Gravity Management alleging it had a conflict of interest when it negotiated his deal for writing Copshop.
U.S. District Judge Fred Slaughter, in an order issued on Tuesday, found that Zero Gravity and its founders Eric and Mark Williams won’t have to face a suit accusing them of prioritizing their payout for producing Copshop to the detriment of their client by failing disclose that the budget for the movie had been substantially raised. Director Joe Carnahan’s latest high-energy actioner easily fulfills the genre’s requirements of blood, guts, bullets and octane, to reference the title of the director’s first film. Copshop delivers an ultraviolent game of cat-and-mouse between a ruthless hired killer and his would-be target, with a determined rookie cop caught in the middle. The ’70s-style synth-heavy musical score, of which Lalo Schifrin would be proud, adds to the enjoyable grindhouse aesthetic.
That the cat-and-mouse game occurs largely in an expansive Nevada police station is one of the cleverly amusing conceits of the screenplay by Carnahan and Kurt McLeod. Featuring ...

It's a balls-the-wall action extravaganza in the first trailer for Copshop, as Hollywood hard-men Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo go toe-to-toe. Both actors have carved careers out of making shamelessly explosive action flicks, and bringing the pair together for the first time looks to have resulted in something pretty wild.
Screaming through the Nevada desert in a bullet-ridden Crown Vic, wily con artist Teddy Murretto (Frank Grillo) hatches a desperate plan to hide out from lethal hitman Bob Viddick (Gerard Butler): He sucker-punches rookie officer Valerie Young (Alexis Louder) to get himself arrested and locked up in a small-town police station. But jail can't protect Murretto for long. Viddick schemes his own way into detention, biding his time in a nearby cell until he can complete his mission. When the arrival of a competing assassin (Toby Huss) ignites all-out mayhem, mounting threats force Viddick to get creative if he...

Big, bombastic and filled with non-stop action scenes, Boss Level is the type of weekend entertainment that demands to be seen on movie theater screens. Unfortunately, most cinemas across the United States are still closed. So director Joe Carnahan has taken his time loop masterwork to Hulu, where it will premiere this Friday, March 5. And it's sure to be an instant favorite amongst action fans and sci-fi aficionados alike. We recently caught up with Joe Carnahan to talk about Boss Level and all the fun that comes along with it.
Joe Carnahan made his directorial debut with the 1998 comedy crime thriller Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane, which instantly put him on the action map. He followed that up with the 2002 hit Narc and never looked back. The filmmaker has since made such hits as Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, Laim Neeson's The Grey, and Stretch. Actors Gerard Butler and Frank Grillo have each carved out a career in big, explosive, shameless action flicks, and now, in some rare great news, both have been confirmed to be starring together in The Grey director Joe Carnahan's upcoming crime thriller, Copshop. Kurt McLeod wrote the original screenplay, which is based on a story by McLeod and Mark Williams, with Carnahan penning the most recent draft.
Copshop will reportedly take place in a small-town police station that becomes the unlikely battleground between a professional hitman, played by Butler, a smart rookie female cop, and a double-crossing con man, played by Frank Grillo, who seeks refuge behind bars with no place left to run. Though there is no word on who is being courted for the female lead, casting is currently underway. Principal photography is set to commence in October with the movie slated to shoot in Georgia and New Mexico.

Taken separately, the names Gerard Butler, Frank Grillo, and Joe Carnahan all probably bring to mind macho, action-packed films. But combine the acting talent of Butler and Grillo with the filmmaking style of Carnahan, and you’re likely in for a film filled with so much testosterone that you might have to wipe yourself down after viewing it. Welcome to “Copshop.”
