Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn Almost Got A Movie With DC's Most Controversial Character
Image
This summer, the brand reputation of DC Comics on the big screen will hopefully be rehabilitated with the release of James Gunn's "Superman." The film is the first big screen entry in the new Dcu, and will set the foundation for what's to come, after a decade of constant hit-or-miss projects from the now-defunct DC Extended Universe (Dceu). The Dceu kicked off in 2013 with Zack Snyder's "Man of Steel," and in the years following that film's release, this shared universe struggled significantly due to inconsistent quality amongst its releases. Perhaps the worst Dceu film comes in the form of "Suicide Squad," which hit theaters in 2016, just a couple of months after "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" released to negative critical reception and polarized responses from audiences.

Directed by David Ayer (although he has since disowned the film), "Suicide Squad" sought to be an exciting, original new cinematic...

Jenna Ortega Knows How Wednesday Addams Would React To Success
Image
Jenna Ortega is no stranger to irony. The actress has long had a knack for pointing to the irony and/or hypocrisy of any situation — be it plot or emotionally driven — on-screen. It's part of what has made her acting so compelling, landing her roles on TV series like You and in the slasher franchise Scream. And it's absolutely at the heart of her titular character from Netflix's Wednesday, Wednesday Addams. Which is why Ortega has some very funny and very apt thoughts about what Wednesday Addams might think about the success of her series (ahead of its Season 2 premiere) and its place in the current pop culture zeitgeist.

In a recent profile from Harper's Bazaar, Ortega points out many an irony regarding her own life and work, and the idiosyncrasies and nuances therein, chief among them being Wednesday Addams' place in pop culture (very popular!) in juxtaposition with...

Charli xcx pitches a Final Destination sequel with an “It Girl” cast
Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Seann William Scott, Kerr Smith, Amanda Detmer, and Chad Donella in Final Destination (2000)
After a 14 year hiatus, the Final Destination franchise returned this year with Final Destination: Bloodlines – and movie-goers were clearly missing these movies, as Bloodlines has so far pulled in $193 million at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing entry in the franchise. One fan of the series is singer/songwriter Charli xcx, who took to TikTok to share her pitch for the next sequel, one that she envisions starring in alongside several “It Girl” actresses.

Charli xcx said (with thanks to The Hollywood Reporter for the transcription), “I’m rewatching all of the Final Destination movies, in preparation to see Final Destination: Bloodlines, which I’m really excited to see. The reason I love these movies is that they really just are about hot people getting killed. You know, there’s no moral backbone to the story, it really is just, ‘They’re hot, they’re cursed and they deserve to die.

40 Best Comic Book Movies of All-Time
Richard Donner at an event for 16 Blocks (2006)
Comics, for decades, have been an integral mainstay of popular literature. Though often undermined and unappreciated by many, superheroes and many others have touched the lives of millions through the pages of their colourful worlds. It’s been a long, strange journey for the comic book genre, and its path to cinematic success was equally challenging. We’ve seen Richard Donner’s “Superman” prove to the world in 1978 that there was, indeed, an audience for live-action superhero flicks, and then Tim Burton would reassure that notion again in 1989, with his groundbreaking blockbuster “Batman”. Then, of course, any ounce of progress that comics had made in the film industry was utterly destroyed and denounced upon release of the 1997 abomination that is “Batman and Robin”.

With help from “Blade” and “X-Men”, followed by Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” in 2002 and Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” in 2005, comic books had reclaimed their spot amongst...

Why The WB Canceled The Batman Spin-Off Series Birds Of Prey
Image
Over a decade before the Arrowverse shows and their crossover events set the standard on The CW, its predecessor, The WB, was already experimenting with similar ideas involving multiple DC Comics superheroes teaming up to fight evil. On October 9, 2002, the network's "Birds of Prey" introduced a Batman-free version of Gotham City where crime runs rampant and familiar faces from the DC universe clash.

From a modern point of view, the show had a lot going for it. Its promo clips heavily suggested that its events existed in (a version of) the same continuity as the Tim Burton Batman movies -- not that this stopped the series from briefly introducing a distinctly new version of the Joker, as voiced by none other than Mark Hamill.  As its main character, "Birds of Prey" had Helena "Huntress" Kyle (Ashley Scott), the super-powered daughter of Catwoman and Batman. Teaming up with former Batgirl Barbara Gordon...

Charli XCX
Singer/songwriter Charli xcx is working on building up her film acting career, and she’s going about it in a really interesting way. Since working on Faces of Death, Charli xcx has taken roles in the Gregg Araki thriller I Want Your Sex, Cathy Yan’s The Gallerist, Romain Gavras’s Sacrifice, Jeremy O. Charli xcx to Star in and Produce ‘Audition’ Director Takashi Miike’s Next Film (Exclusive)
Image
Get ready for Takashi Miike summer. Charli xcx is set to star in and produce the next film from the prolific Japanese horror director, Variety understands.

The film marks the second project the multi-hyphenate — whose sixth studio album, “Brat,” continues to be a phenomenon — is producing through her new Studio365 banner, joining upcoming A24 movie “The Moment.” Though plot details are being kept under wraps, Miike is known for his depictions of extreme violence, as seen in his 1999 cult classic “Audition” and 2001’s “Ichi the Killer.” Ross Evans, whose script “How to Save a Marriage” is being developed for Sony with Robert Pattinson attached to produce, is penning the screenplay. Yumiko Aoyagi is co-writing.

Since launching “Brat” in June of last year — which earned the pop star three Grammys and was widely regarded as the best album of 2024 — Charli has turned her attention toward acting and producing, lining up an impressive array of projects.

The 25 Best Modern Action Movies
Image
Everyone likes a good action movie, but everyone loves a great one. The art of the action genre has evolved in the last few decades, as visual effects have shoved human on-set accomplishment to the side, and many of the biggest blockbusters are made largely in a computer. There are plenty of wonderful movies made that way, but if we’re being honest, our tastes lean more towards fights and stunts and shootouts that make our blood pump and our bodies involuntarily flinch because, dang it, that looks like it’s gotta hurt.

So, allowing for the fact that there are enough films to populate a Top 100, here are our picks for The 25 Best Modern Action Movies, from the year 2000 to today. Every year more movies push the boundaries of what the action genre is capable of, so we look forward to having to update this over the years to...

'I Always Hate [It]': Natalie Portman Reveals the Career Question She Really Doesn't Like Being Asked
Image
Star Warsprequel trilogy star and Hollywood icon Natalie Portman explains why one interview question particularly irks her.

Speaking to Interview Magazine, Portman was asked about how she finds herself within the various characters she portrays and whether she looks for any of that kind of connection when going into a role. "I don’t know that it’s always the same for me," Portman replied. "I always hate the question of 'How do you relate to your characters' because I'm usually most interested in playing someone who's quite different from me."

"Because if it’s like me, I'd rather just live my own life," Portman explained. "But I think, because I have an aspect of my life that’s quite logistical now—I've got two kids who are in school and I want to spend as much time with them as possible—sometimes I take a job that is great,...

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell in Talks to Star in ‘Single White Female’ Redo
Image
Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are in talks to star in a new take on the 1992 film “Single White Female,” TheWrap has learned. The thriller is set up at Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures and Sony.

“Single White Female” stars Bridget Fonda as a woman who rents an apartment after a breakup, only to reunite with her ex-boyfriend. But upon reconciliation, her tenant — played by Jennifer Jason Leigh — starts to exhibit odd behavior.

It’s unclear which actress would be playing which role in the new film.

Directed by Barbet Schroeder, the film was based on the John Lutz book “Swf Seeks Same.” The movie became something of a cultural touchstone as the phrase “Single White Female” entered the lexicon as short-hand for a woman gone off the rails.

Ortega is coming off a key role in last year’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” and reprises the title role in Netflix’s “Wednesday” Season 2 later this year.

Charli Xcx Circling White Witch Role In Greta Gerwig’s Netflix Narnia Movie
Image
Brat summer is over — Brat winter is coming! It's been a busy old start to the month for pop megastar Charli Xcx, who scooped a mighty four Brit Awards just last weekend before following it up with the announcement of a Glastonbury headline slot just this morning. But while the rest of us would probably be nursing hangovers or taking some time out to chill right about now, that's not the 'Guess' singer's style. Per Deadline's reporting, the budding actor is circling a role in Greta Gerwig's upcoming Netflix Narnia movie.

Who exactly Charli Xcx will hypothetically be playing in Gerwig's fantasy epic adaptation of C.S. Lewis' beloved books isn't 100% confirmed, but while we reckon the Brit star could easily play one of the Good Ones, Deadline's sources say that she could be set to play one of the franchise's Mean Girls instead — namely Jadis, The White Witch.

While Charli Xcx’s potential Narnia role remains unknown, Deadline suggests she could play Jadis, The White Witch.

Greta Gerwig's 'Narnia' Reportedly Eyeing Charli Xcx as White Witch
Image
Greta Gerwig has been hard at work on a new adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix. Amidst reports that she has secured a theatrical release, including plenty of IMAX screens, it seems Gerwig is close to finding at least one major cast member for the blockbuster project. Previously played by Tilda Swinton in the 2005 film adaptation, Narnia could feature the brattiest witch of them all if a new report is to be trusted.

According to Deadline, worldwide pop star sensation Charli Xcx is being eyed to play Jadis the White Witch in Netflix's upcoming Narnia movie franchise. No deal has been struck yet, and while the trade is not 100% confident that it is for the iconic villain, Narnia would be by far the artist's most high-profile acting gig yet. Deadline adds that Charli Xcx is among several actors on the top of the list for the White Witch,...

Netflix Secures Global Rights to Natalie Portman and Lena Dunham’s ‘Good Sex’ in $55M Deal
Good Sex (2022)
Netflix has acquired the worldwide distribution rights to Good Sex, a romantic comedy starring Natalie Portman and directed by Lena Dunham. The streaming platform outbid Warner Bros., Apple, and Amazon, securing the project for approximately $55 million.

The deal emerged as one of the largest at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin. The budget for the film was originally much lower, but with tax incentives tied to an expected New Jersey shoot, the total value of the deal surpasses previous high-profile acquisitions.

Portman plays Ally, a couples’ therapist nearing 40 who, after a decade-long relationship ends, is pushed back into New York’s dating scene. She finds herself involved in two relationships—one with a 20-something Brooklyn hipster and another with a successful man in his 50s. As she juggles both, her situation forces her to confront her personal struggles. Casting for the two male roles is still in progress.

Netflix Wins Out In Big Auction For Natalie Portman-Lena Dunham Rom-Com ‘Good Sex’
Image
Exclusive: We understand Netflix has beaten out multiple suitors and is closing up a worldwide deal for Natalie Portman rom-com Good Sex in a pact around the $55M mark.

It was a slow EFM in terms of splashy deals on the ground in Berlin but the wheels have been turning behind the scenes and this is one of the biggest ever carved out of the market.

As we revealed, the package sparked a bidding war earlier this month with Warner Bros, Amazon, Apple and Netflix among those in the mix.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star in the buzzy package, written and to be directed by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls). CAA Media Finance and Film Nation Entertainment launched the project ahead of the market.

It’s zeitgeisty fare. After Babygirl and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, age gap romances are in vogue and in Good...

Natalie Portman-Lena Dunham Rom-Com ‘Good Sex’ Sparks EFM Bidding War With Offers At $45M+
Image
Exclusive: Buyers at the EFM have been on the hunt for Good Sex. The package has sparked a bidding war with Warner Bros, Amazon, Apple and Netflix among those understood to be in the mix for the hot project which is garnering WW offers around the $45M mark. This could well go up.

Oscar winner Natalie Portman is set to star in the buzzy rom-com package, written and to be directed by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls).

CAA Media Finance and Film Nation Entertainment launched the project ahead of the market and it has drawn strong interest from theatrical buyers and streamers at an otherwise quiet EFM so far in terms of splashy dealmaking.

This is zeitgeisty fare. After Babygirl and Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, age gap romances are in vogue and in Good Sex it’s Portman’s turn to have a dalliance with a younger man.

5 Years Ago, One Of The Dceu's Best Movies Met A Grim Fate At The Box Office
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"I pitched the idea of an R-rated girl gang film including Harley, because I was like, 'Harley needs friends.'" That's what Margot Robbie said in May 2018, explaining how Harley Quinn's eventual 2020 spin-off film "Birds of Prey" came to be. "I wasn't seeing enough girl gangs on screen, especially in the action space."

Warner Bros. was in a weird spot around this time. Marvel was running laps around DC in the cinematic universe space, with "Avengers: Infinity War" shattering records in 2018 and the MCU collectively generating billions upon billions of dollars globally. DC, meanwhile, was reeling from the commercial disaster that was "Justice League," while trying to build on the success of "Wonder Woman." As part of that plan, they leaned...

The Feature Film Development Studio takes place across nine months, and includes workshopping feature-length scripts, creating business plans and pitch materials, and honing presentation skills. The program ends with a pitch session in September before a live audience and film professionals. The cohort will...

Every Dceu Movie Which Needs a Reboot in James Gunn’s Dcu
Image
After multiple issues, controversies, personnel changes, and mergers, the Dceu is finally done and dusted, with James Gunn taking over the reins as co-chief of DC Studios along with Peter Safran. The franchise, which was supposed to be a competitor to the MCU, crashed and burned but it was not without some genuinely good films.

The SnyderVerse is never happening. It is a miracle that fans even got the Snyder Cut. However, like how Gunn took the disastrous Suicide Squad and gave it a good direction with The Suicide Squad, there are a few more films from the Dceu that deserved better. Here are four films that need a second chance in the Dcu.

1. The Flash Ezra Miller in The Flash | Credits: Warner Bros.

This one had every obstacle thrown at it and while it is admirable that The Flash finally did release, the underwhelming quality of the film ultimately...

This article briefly mentions sexual assault.

Action movies have been a cornerstone of cinema for its entire 100-year history: from the classic Buster Keaton films of the 1920s to the John Wick movies of the 2020s.
