Chicago Med deaths in order: Every Gaffney employee who has died in the show
Image
We have already gone through the tragedies of Chicago Fire, so we thought it only right that we do the same for Chicago Med. The medical drama shares Fire's lighter tone, especially when it comes to personal subplots, but the professional stuff can get pretty hair-raising.

As with our Fire list, we wanted to place an emphasis on characters who worked at Gaffney Medical Center. That excludes family members and patients, in an effort to keep the emphasis on "main." The three deaths listed below remain devastating for their own distinct reasons.

Dr. David Downey (S1.E18)

Dr. David Downey (Gregg Henry) may not ring a bell to current fans, but he played a pretty significant part in the first half of Chicago Med's debut season. He was a wiley veteran who doubled as a mentor figure for Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell).

Their closeness took a tragic turn, though, when...

Chicago Med spoilers: New showrunner has interest in ‘bringing back characters from the past’
Oliver Platt, Steven Weber, Marlyne Barrett, S. Epatha Merkerson, and Jessy Schram in Chicago Med (2015)
Chicago Med spoilers directly from the boss are worth examining as Season 10 episodes continue airing on NBC.

The new season has presented Med fans with much excitement in the Ed, spurred by some new faces.

Sarah Ramos now plays Dr. Caitlin Lenox, and Darren Barnet plays Dr. John Frost. Last season, they added Luke Mitchell as Dr. Mitch Ripley.

Allen MacDonald became the new Chicago Med showrunner for Season 10, and he claimed to have binge-watched all 176 episodes before taking the job.

MacDonald has fresh ideas for the show, including building the world and character arcs of the showrunners before him. But that’s not all.

When he was interviewed about the new season, MacDonald made some interesting statements worth addressing.

Could the Chicago Med cast see some fun guest appearances during Season 10?

Chicago Med fans know the show has experienced some turnover over the years. Many of the original stars...

The Saddest One Chicago Deaths, Ranked
Image
This article contains a discussion regarding suicide.

The One Chicago franchise has been an NBC staple for almost a decade. The franchise is comprised of Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D. and Chicago Med. The series within the One Chicago franchise follows the lives of first responders and medical personnel in Chicago. The franchise is incredibly successful due to the multiple crossovers that allow the franchise to truly feel like an interconnected cast of characters spanned across three different series.

Due to the occupations of the One Chicago characters, it is not surprising that death is a semi-common occurrence in the franchise. While death is more common amongst civilian victims of medical incidents or accidents, the first responders themselves are not immune from death themselves. Due to the excellent character building in this franchise, the deaths of the main and supporting characters in the One Chicago franchise can devastate viewers when they occur.

Chicago Med Just Lost This Series Regular
Image
Dr. Crockett Marcel has scrubbed out of Chicago Med after five seasons. According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Dominic Rains who plays the emergency room surgeon, has exited the show as a series regular after five seasons. Rains joined the NBC show in Season 5 as the new trauma surgeon fellow at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center following the exit of Norma Kuhling whose character Dr. Ava Bekker also an ER surgeon, committed suicide in the aftermath of a desperate effort to win back her ex-boyfriend Dr. Connor Rhodes (Colin Donnell). It remains unclear whether Rains will feature in the upcoming Season 10 in a guest capacity or if this is his final goodbye.

The Best Performances of 2020
Image
Our year-end coverage continues with a look at the best performances of the year. Rather than divide categories into supporting or lead or by gender, we’ve written about our thirty favorite performances from 2020, period. Check out our countdown below and start watching the ones you’ve missed here.

30. Frances McDormand (Nomadland)

Frances McDormand’s work in Nomadland is all about isolation, While she shines in the communal sequences throughout the country, particularly alongside David Strathairn, her best acting here comes from solitude. Whether she’s silently eating in her Rv, working tedious shifts at Amazon warehouses, swimming underneath waterfalls or wandering around her former house with aching melancholy, McDormand flawlessly captures the freedom and heartbreak of impermanence with just a few trembles and glances. – Logan K.

29. Cosmo Jarvis (Shadow of Violence)

‘Fourteen’: Dan Sallit’s Latest Is A Thoughtful Study Of A Crumbling Friendship [Review]
Image
Comprising small, gentle scenes played out largely in apartments and restaurants, “Fourteen” wonders if it’s possible for friendships to deepen even as they fall apart. Doing most of the falling apart is Jo (Norma Kuhling), a depressed 20-something who sleeps in past work and sleeps around with lots of guys, much to her friend, Mara’s (Tallie Medel), judgment. The two have been close since middle school, with a scrapbook of memories immediately recognizable to anyone lucky enough to have a life-long friend.

‘Fourteen’: Film Review
Image
Many of the most scarring breakups we suffer in life are not with lovers, but with friends: people we once trusted with our most closely guarded truths, reduced over the years to strangers, or more wrenchingly still, to polite occasional acquaintances. Yet we rarely refer to these breakups as such. We talk about “drifting apart” or “losing touch” or some other euphemism that makes the loss sound less severe, as if our friendships carry less weight than our romances. We belittle them, even, with phrases like “just friends,” as if the designation is somehow less complex. The unstinting marital drama is a genre unto itself; rarer are the films that scrutinize the progression of a platonic friendship with equivalent gravity and intricacy.

Dan Sallitt’s “Fourteen” is one: a wise, graceful but viciously felt study of middle-school best friends whose bond becomes a burden the further they recede into adulthood,...

Growing Up and Apart: Dan Sallitt on "Fourteen"
Image
Micro-budgeted and entirely self-financed projects by a critic and director with a day job in It, the films of Dan Sallitt feel light years away from anything currently produced in the United States. And the dissonance owes as much to their shoestring means as to the emotional wealth they harbor. To be treading into Sallitt’s luminous cinema—a body of work that so far spans five features and one short, Caterina, his latest project—is to wade into a universe dotted with psychologically complex characters grappling with unfulfilled desires and shape-shifting relationships. It’s a world that feels curiously domestic in scope, pivoting as it often does on character studies and couples’ portraits, like the L.A.-stranded protagonists of Sallitt’s 1986 debut Polly Perverse Strikes Again!, the best friends turned newlyweds in Honeymoon (1998), the two estranged sisters in All The Ships at Sea (2004), or the other sibling duo...

Fourteen (2019)
Full Trailer for Dan Sallitt's 'Fourteen' - Available to Watch This Month
Fourteen (2019)
"So what do you think is going on with her?" Grasshopper Film has released an official trailer for an indie drama that has been picking up rave reviews at festivals for a while. Fourteen is the latest film made by American indie filmmaker Dan Sallitt, and it premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year before playing all over the world. Tallie Medel and Norma Kuhling star as two friends struggling with the realities of adult life. The film takes place over a decade, showing us only a few disparate scenes between them when they reconnect and converse. The cast includes Lorelei Romani, C. Mason Wells, Dylan McCormick, and Kolyn Brown. The film will be released "virtually" this month through a watch-at-home service from Grasshopper directly. Here's the full-length trailer (+ final poster) for Dan Sallitt's Fourteen, from Grasshopper's YouTube: Over the course of a decade, a woman named Jo...

Trailer for Dan Sallitt’s Acclaimed Drama Fourteen Shows a Decade of Friendship
Image
We’ve been big on Dan Sallitt’s Fourteen since its premiere at last year’s Berlinale, calling it “an acutely observed and quietly expansive little film” about the struggles of friendship between two distinctly different women. Although we named it one of year’s best undistributed films just four months ago, it’s opening next week—virtually, given these times—via Grasshopper Film, who’ve premiered a trailer and poster. (Which now makes it one of 10 films to see this month.)

Starring Tallie Medel and Norma Kuhling (Chicago Med), the movie, which I saw last year, efficiently moves across an entire decade, and in 90-or-so minutes captures time’s alternately enriching and corrosive effects in a way that’s practically novelistic in depth.

See both below:

Mara and Jo, in their twenties, have been close friends since middle school. Jo, the more outgoing figure, is a social worker who...

Annie Ilonzeh Departs ‘Chicago Fire’ After 2 Seasons
David Eigenberg, Hanako Greensmith, Taylor Kinney, Joe Minoso, Miranda Rae Mayo, and Jocelyn Hudon in Chicago Fire (2012)
As hinted in last night’s final episode of Chicago Fire‘s seventh season, series regular Annie Ilonzeh is leaving the NBC firefighter drama after two seasons.

Ilonzeh joined Chicago Fire as a new series regular at the beginning of Season 7. She played Emily, an intelligent, easy-going and confident new paramedic. Ilonzeh was initially set as a recurring, but was upped to series regular after production on Season 7 began.

Tallie Medel & Norma Kuhling in Indie Drama 'Fourteen' Teaser Trailers
"Did he seem nervous when you asked him to dinner?" This small indie film playing on the festival circuit is a worthwhile discovery and still needs a distributor. Fourteen is the latest film made by American indie filmmaker Dan Sallitt, and it first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year before playing all over the world. The film takes place over a decade, showing us only a few disparate scenes between them when they reconnect and converse. The cast also includes Lorelei Romani, C. Grasshopper Film Nabs Berlin Film Festival Pic ‘Fourteen’
Fourteen (2019)
Grasshopper Film has required the U.S. distribution rights to Fourteen, the feature about female friendship from writer/director Dan Sallitt, which premiered at the 2019 Berlin Film Festival. Starring Tallie Medel and Norma Kuhling (NBC’s Chicago Med), the pic is slated for a theatrical release in the spring followed by a digital and home video release.

The story centers on Mara and Jo who, now in their twenties, have been close friends since middle school. Jo, the more outgoing figure, is a social worker who runs through a series of brief but intense relationships. Mara, a less splashy personality than Jo, bounces among teacher aide jobs while trying to land a position in elementary education, and writes fiction in her spare time. She too has a transient romantic life, though she seems to settle down after meeting Adam, a mild-mannered software developer.

‘The Masked Singer’ Dominant In Return, ‘Stumptown’ Launches To So-So Ratings
Fox’s The Masked Singer came back in a new time slot and the same top ratings spot — handily winning Premiere Wednesday in the adults 18-49 demographic (Live+Same Day). The zany competition drew a 2.5 adults 18-49 rating and 7.9 million viewers for its special two-hour 8-10 Pm Season 2 premiere.

That was down 13% (fast nationals to fast nationals) from the series debut in January, when the show aired at 9 Pm. But given where Live+Sd broadcast ratings levels are, The Masked Singer remains a massive hit. It is the highest-rated program of broadcast Premiere Week in 18-49, towering over the second highest-rated by a whopping 39%.

The Masked Singer was the highest-rated L+Sd fall unscripted telecast on any network in two years (since The Voice on 10/2/17) and Fox’s highest-rated fall unscripted telecast in six years (since The X-Factor on 9/25/13). The two-hour Masked Singer premiere delivered...

Chicago Med Shocker: Colin Donnell Returning for Connor's Exit Story
It turns out, Chicago Med fans will be getting more closure for one character than they first thought.

Back in April, fans of the medical drama were dealt a huge blow when it was revealed that Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling were bowing out of the series.

When Chicago Med Season 4 concluded, Connor didn't get much in the way of closure.

Thankfully, Us Weekly has confirmed that Donnell will be back in the fall to wrap up Connor's storyline.

If you watch Chicago Med online, you know that Connor's father Cornelius passed away.

Chicago Med Season 5: Colin Donnell Will Return for Connor's Exit Story
Dr. Connor Rhodes is checking back into Chicago Med: Colin Donnell will return for the Season 5 premiere to wrap up his character’s storyline, TVLine has confirmed.

In April, it was announced that Donnell — along with co-star Norma Kuhling (aka Dr. Ava Bekker) — would not be returning as a series regular in the fall. However, Connor’s story was left unfinished, with little closure, at the conclusion of the Season 4 finale. In the episode, Connor began to suspect that Ava was responsible for his dad Cornelius’ death. His ex was on a totally different wavelength, though, and tried to get back together with her beau.

As previously reported, Colin Donnell (aka Dr. Connor Rhodes) and Norma Kuhling (Dr. Ava Bekker) will not be returning as series regulars for Season 5 this fall. Their storylines, however, remain open-ended as of this past May’s finale, which saw the former couple’s roller coaster relationship hit a new low.

Chicago Med Recap: How the Finale Didn't Write Out Connor and Ava — Plus, Is [Spoiler] a Goner?
Colin Donnell
If we didn’t know any better, we might have mistakenly assumed that Connor and Ava are sticking around after Wednesday’s Chicago Med. The season finale — which marks stars Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling’s final episode — doesn’t provide a ton of closure for the exiting characters, whose complicated relationship only gets more messy in the episode.

After Nina informs Connor that his dad died from an overdose of synthetic insulin, the doc is back to giving Ava the suspicious eye during surgery on Phillip’s daughter. After the operation, Ava once again reaches out to Connor and offers her condolences.

One Chicago Shakeup: Colin Donnell, Jon Seda Among Departures
NBC has already confirmed that One Chicago will remain intact next season, but that does not mean all of the cast members will be back for each show.

Per Deadline, Jon Seda is bowing out of Chicago P.D. later this season, while Colin Donnell and Norma Kuhling are bowing out of Chicago Med as series regulars.

There's no telling how either actor will be written out, but it is somewhat concerning how late these decisions have come out.

Seda plays Detective Antonio Dawson. He first appeared on Chicago Fire before joining Chicago P.D. when the series debuted. He departed a few seasons later, joining the cast of Chicago Justice.
