Real Reason Why Sean Penn’s Space Drama ‘The First’ Was Cancelled After Just One Season
Image
The First on Hulu was cancelled after its one-season run, leaving the sci-fi world unexplored and uncharted. Despite having a stellar cast, the Sean Penn-starrer drama went through highs and lows, including low viewership and mixed critical response.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Beau Willimon, who was also the showrunner for House of Cards, talked about the show, saying,

“I always knew I wanted to structure it that way, and I was upfront from the get-go.”

He added more to his statement, saying,

“Some people will want a show that leaps right into space and gets to Mars within a few hours. We know how much it means to them, we know how much they had to sacrifice.”

The crux of the matter is that, in the face of Hulu’s broad audience and quality content, the show failed to keep its head up. Let’s...

A still from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3

Despite the film’s critical acclaim and box office success, it has received one particular note of criticism for one of its most poignant scenes. In a new video, Canadian astronaut and engineer Chris Hadfield has highlighted the one flaw in the scene that sees Peter Quill / Star-Lord surviving in space without a space suit. Here is what Hadfield said about the lack of realism in this particular scene from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.

Image
Bill Bryson bestseller A Short History of Nearly Everything is being reimagined as an animated TV series by former The Simpsons showrunner Josh Weinstein and Paddington scribe Jason Hazeley, with Richard Ayoade narrating.

Altitude and Brouhaha Entertainment are forging the series version of a book that has sold 15 million copies worldwide and been translated into 50 languages, with a view to turning it into a long-running entertainment franchise.

Published two decades ago, the book sees celebrated writer Bryson take on popular science by tackling issues such as the size of the universe and the development of the human race, and setting them out in layman’s terms. A large part of the book is devoted to relating humorous stories about the scientists behind the research and their sometimes eccentric behaviours. Narrated by Ayoade, the animation will tell these stories spanning centuries and continents, time and space, and the abstract and the real,...

“Just Like That”: F9’s Car In Space Stunt Got 1 Thing Very Right, Astronaut Reveals
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield analyzes the outer space sequence in F9: The Fast Saga, revealing that there's a scene of quiet reflection that stands out to him as accurate. Floating in Earth's orbit, Roman and Tej look down at the Earth in awe with the infinite blackness of space around them, and Hadfield says the scene captures the awe of such an experience. For better or worse, F9's space sequence is an embrace of the more ridiculous elements of the franchise and represents the movies' move away from reality.

Real-life astronaut Chris Hadfield breaks down F9: The Fast Saga's scenes in outer space, explaining that there's one thing the movie actually gets right. Released in 2021, the ninth film in the mainline Fast & Furious franchise sees Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto return to face off against his estranged brother. The film features some of the most over-the-top action in the series,...

“High-Speed Ejections Are Not Pretty”: Top Gun: Maverick’s Unshown Scene Described By Real-Life Test Pilot
Image
Astronaut and test pilot Chris Hadfield noted a missing scene in Top Gun: Maverick that would have featured Maverick launching in an ejection pod after escaping the exploding jet. Realism and practicality are prioritized in Top Gun: Maverick, with the movie featuring accurate depictions of Navy pilot life and technical tools. The involvement of the American military and actual Navy pilots as trainers ensures accuracy and corrects any inaccuracies.

A real-life test pilot and astronaut reveals a hidden scene within Top Gun: Maverick. A sequel to 1986's Top Gun, Maverick features Tom Cruise returning as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. With Maverick training the next generation of pilots, the movie featured one last mission for the rogue hero. The sequel was a massive hit, earning $1.496 billion at the box office on a budget of under $180 million. It was also nominated for six awards at the Academy Awards and won Best Sound.

“We Are Definitely Not Cowboys”: 23-Year-Old Clint Eastwood Movie Criticized By Real-Life Astronaut
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield criticizes Clint Eastwood's film Space Cowboys for its inaccurate portrayal of astronaut training. The centrifuge scene in the movie fails to accurately depict the speed and effects of G-force, and the astronauts' reactions are unrealistic. The age and rapid training of the astronauts in the film are also unrealistic, as real astronauts are selected and trained in their prime years and undergo a lengthy process.

Clint Eastwood's Space Cowboys gets criticized by astronaut Chris Hadfield who jokes, "We are definitely not cowboys." Featuring the all-star cast of Clint Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner, the film follows four former test pilots who are recruited by NASA and sent into space to repair a Soviet satellite. The adventure drama, which was also directed by Eastwood, doubled its $60 million budget at the box office and was a critical success because of its stars and spectacular special effects.

10 Space Movies That Experts Claim Are Wildly Inaccurate
Image
Realism in space movies can add authenticity and enhance the plot, but it often takes a backseat to visuals and storytelling. Inaccurate portrayals of space can be jarring for experts and viewers, such as unrealistic reactions to vacuum or incorrect physics. While deviations from scientific accuracy can still make for enjoyable viewing experiences, space movies should not be considered authoritative sources on astronomy or astrophysics.

With so many space stories out there, it's no surprise that experts have found that many science-fiction movies get real-life astronauts and the science of space wrong. Although space movies like 2001: A Space Odyssey are often praised for their stunning visuals, providing extremely accurate representations of space is not always prioritized. This may be frustrating for those who know better, but it's often done so that movies can focus on visuals or plot points instead.

That said, sometimes realism can help validate a film franchise's internal science.

Apple TV+ series For All Mankind Depicts Realistic Death in Space According to Renowned Astronaut
Image
The portrayal of bullets on the moon in For All Mankind is chillingly accurate, as they travel with haunting precision due to the lack of air and oxygen to disrupt their trajectory. The aftermath of a bullet puncturing a spacesuit in space is both petrifying and authentic, as the oxygen-filled suit can quickly turn into an infernal chamber when breached. For All Mankind strikes a delicate balance between scientific accuracy and imaginative storytelling, inviting viewers to navigate the realms of possibilities and probabilities in our universe with curiosity and skepticism.

Riveting, perplexing, and threaded with the abstractions of ‘what could have been’—this is how audiences have catapulted themselves through the space-time continuum depicted in Apple TV+’s series For All Mankind. The series charts an intricate alternative history, a cosmos where the Soviet Union proudly plants its flag on the moon’s barren surface before the United States, spiraling...

For All Mankind: Astronaut Confirms Horrifying Death In Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show Is Realistic
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield confirms the accuracy of gunfire in For All Mankind on the moon, reasoning that the lack of air and oxygen makes bullets more accurate. Hadfield discusses how a bullet's impact on a space suit causing a fire is true to life due to the high oxygen environment inside. Despite some inconsistencies, For All Mankind still puts effort into handling its topics and Hadfield's critiques add depth to the show's scientific accuracy.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield has confirmed the accuracy of a death in the series For All Mankind. The series follows an alternate reality in which the Soviet Union landed on the moon before the United States and the space race never ended. Each season has taken a time jump that delves further into what a continued competition between the world's superpowers would look like if they kept striving for the stars.

Astronaut Chris Hadfield Praises Fast & Furious 9 Space Travel Scene
Image
F9, the latest installment in the Fast & Furious series, includes a sequence where characters venture into space with a car, which is scientifically implausible but very cool, according to astronaut Chris Hadfield. Hadfield praises the scene for capturing the characters' reactions and the beauty of seeing Earth from space. Despite the franchise's reputation for unrealistic action sequences, time travel will not be included in Fast 11, according to director Louis Leterrier.

Just when the audience believed that the Fast & Furious saga had broken all the laws of physics, F9 was released, proving that they could take things to a whole new level. In the film directed by Justin Lin, Tej (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) venture into space. Something that seemed very unlikely to anyone> But, as it turns out, to astronaut Chris Hadfield it's not so crazy. The Fast & Furious films have received a lot...

“Delightful Little Touch”: Expert Spots Buried Detail In Top Gun: Maverick That Proves Tom Cruise Is A “Real Pilot”
Image
Retired astronaut Chris Hadfield praises Tom Cruise's performance in Top Gun: Maverick, highlighting one line during the Darkstar sequence that proves that actor knows his stuff. Maverick says, "We have information Alpha," while taxiing in the Darkstar, meaning he has weather and runway information. It's a subtle moment that adds to the film's authenticity. While certainly heavily reliant on VFX, the film placed a big emphasis on shooting its aerial sequences as practically as possible, making it especially thrilling for audiences.

Retired astronaut and engineer Chris Hadfield analyzes Top Gun: Maverick, pointing out one hidden aspect of Tom Cruise's performance that proves he really knows his stuff as a pilot. Serving as a follow-up to Tony Scott's 1986 original, Joseph Kosinski's 2022 sequel sees Cruise return as hotshot pilot Pete "Maverick" Mitchell to train a new batch of recruits for a dangerous mission. Ryan Reynolds’ 2017 Sci-Fi Thriller Life Criticized By Astronaut for Space Science Inaccuracy
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield criticizes Life for scientific inaccuracies, pointing out flaws in the depiction of a gravity-free environment and the reckless use of a flamethrower in space. Despite these inaccuracies, the film receives acclaim for its convincing characters, unique alien, and impressive zero-gravity effects, particularly Ryan Reynolds' commitment to portraying weightlessness. Life blurs the line between authenticity and cinematic freedom, raising questions about its portrayal of space realities and adding to the ongoing discussion in the realm of space cinema.

2017 Space Horror Movie Criticized By The Astronaut Ryan Reynolds Consulted For It
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield criticizes the methods used to kill the alien in the movie Life, stating that using an oxygen candle and flamethrower would be dangerous and unrealistic on a spaceship. Hadfield points out that a flamethrower inside a spaceship would be extremely hazardous, as fire is one of the biggest emergencies on a spacecraft. Despite the inaccuracies, audiences enjoyed the zero-gravity effects and the design of the alien in Life.

“Excruciating To Watch”: Real Astronaut Roasts Apple TV+ Show As “Cartoonish” Sci-Fi
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield finds the portrayal of space exploration in For All Mankind "excruciating to watch" and "cartoonish". Despite his criticism, Hadfield acknowledges that the scene where a US astronaut shoots a Soviet astronaut with a rifle on the moon is accurate, as the lack of air and gravity would affect the bullet trajectory. Overall, For All Mankind's depiction of outer space is considered realistic, and the show's production team has conducted extensive research to achieve accuracy. Hadfield's expertise makes him keen to catch any small details that others might miss.

NASA Astronaut Explains What Gotg 3 Got Wrong About Star-Lord Almost Dying In Space
Image
According to retired NASA astronaut Chris Hadfield, someone could survive in space without a spacesuit for about 30 seconds before suffering irreversible damage and death due to lack of oxygen. After about 15 seconds, a person left unprotected in space would lose consciousness due to lack of oxygen in the blood that reached the brain. While the portrayal of Star-Lord's face swelling in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is exaggerated, it adds realism and emotional impact to the scene, making the movie more scientifically accurate than the first Guardians of the Galaxy film.

The actual science of the scene featuring Star-Lord almost dying in space in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is revealed by a real-life NASA astronaut. In the climactic scenes of James Gunn's Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy capper, Star-Lord launches himself from the High Evolutionary's ship to Knowhere, but gets stuck in space, and is eventually saved by a redeemed Adam Warlock.

Watching Jeff Bezos Go to Space Was More Depressing Than Inspiring
Image
Mere minutes after touching the edge of space, Jeff Bezos and his fellow Blue Origin crewmates stood back on Earth, shaking champagne at the throng of cameras pointed their way with grins wide enough to see from … well, space. No matter which channel you turned to — CBS, NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC — the praise was effusive and breathless. But no matter how many times networks replayed the brief launch or how much Anderson Cooper waxed poetic about Amazon founder once being “this young guy building rockets” from 3D printers, it was near impossible to imagine feeling inspired. In just 11 minutes, the Blue Origin flight encapsulated everything wrong with billionaires buying their way into the final frontier.

Once upon a time, the space race might have represented hope and wonder (plus a healthy dose of rah-rah jingoism). Now, from where so many of us are sitting on this rapidly burning planet, watching...

Richard Branson Shares His 'Extraordinary' Space Flight Experience with Stephen Colbert
Image
Richard Branson became the first person to blast off in his own spaceship, beating fellow billionaire Jeff Bezos (whose own self-funded trip to space is slated for July 20) by nine days. He stopped by The Late Show last night to share his experience with Colbert. The nearly 71-year-old Branson along with five crewmates from his Virgin Galactic space tourism company reached an altitude of about 53 miles (88 kilometers) over the New Mexico desert, enough to experience three to four minutes of weightlessness and see the curvature of the Earth, and then safely glided back home to a runway landing.

Stephen Colbert greeted a shoeless Branson, "Welcome back to the cool green hills of Earth." He later asked, "At any point did you think this was not a good idea...?" as they watched the footage from the flight. Branson admitted that he did have misgivings of whether his body was going to cope,...

Ryan Reynolds Jokes That Deadpool 3 Is Practically Writing Itself
Ryan Reynolds is well known for becoming heavily involved in the creative process of his movies, and that’s not just limited to spending a dozen years trying to steer Deadpool out of development hell before it finally hit the big screen in 2016. Director Shawn Levy recently admitted that the leading man played a huge role in shaping the script for upcoming action comedy Free Guy, and was also directly responsible for a classic Mariah Carey track being positioned at the forefront of the marketing.

Despite regularly polishing and rewriting the dialogue of his star vehicles, though, the 44 year-old’s only official writing credit was on Deadpool 2 alongside Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. We haven’t had any confirmation about whether or not the regular scribes will be back for the third installment, but last year they admitted they were waiting on the go-ahead from Kevin Feige to start working on the script.

Nasa Astronaut Tears Into Gravity, He Thinks It Bad for Little Girls
Chris Hadfield
Chris Hadfield is a retired Nasa astronaut and engineer. Meaning he knows a thing or two about what it takes to go into space in real life. Hadfield uses his expertise to tell audiences which Hollywood space-based films had the most believable setup. Surprisingly, he had some particularly harsh words for 2013 best picture Oscar nominee Gravity.

"[Gravity is] so far from reality that I want to turn my head."

Words that are sure to surprise many fans of the film. After all, unlike the more over-the-top space films like Star Wars or Guardians of the Galaxy, Gravity is considered a gritty and realistic take on what it takes to be an astronaut. The movie tells the story of a group of astronauts who are stuck in space after the mid-orbit destruction of their satellite.

The rest of the team is picked off one by one, leaving lone astronaut Dr. Ryan Stone,...

Nasa Astronaut Looks Back at ‘Gravity’: It’s Harmful for Girls Who Want to Go to Space
Chris Hadfield
Nasa astronaut Chris Hadfield has been to space three times, has participated in two space walks, and has served as the commander of the International Space Station. Hadfield joined Vanity Fair this week to review space films such as Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” James Gray’s “Ad Astra,” and Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey,” but no movie is the object of the astronaut’s scorn as much as Alfonso Cuarón’s “Gravity.” Hadfield admits Cuarón’s 2013 Oscar winner boasts great visual effects and a magnificent depiction of a space walk in its opening scene, but that’s about it when it comes to praise. Much of “Gravity” is “so far from reality that I want to turn my head,” Hadfield says in the video below.

Hadfield’s first major criticism is how extremely “Gravity” violates the laws of physics. Take the scene where a satellite crashes into the International Space Station.

Watch Kraftwerk Perform ‘Spacelab’ Live With In-Orbit Astronaut
Pioneering electronic music group Kraftwerk blazed another trail during their concert Friday when an in-orbit astronaut joined the band live via video chat to perform “Spacelab.”

The unique collaboration occurred during Kraftwerk’s concert in Stuttgart, Germany, the Associated Press reports, with German astronaut Alexander Gerst “dropping in” from the International Space Station.

Gerst used a tablet configured with a virtual synthesizer to play Kraftwerk’s The Man-Machine cut “Spacelab,” a fitting choice, with the band’s co-founder Ralf Hütter. The duet lasted five minutes, after which Gerst signed off...

ne Strange Rock is an ambitious, sprawling tale about life on planet Earth, examining the animals and plants that inhabit it, along with the human race, from cultural traditions to exploration of this planet and space. Indeed, the series uses stories from a handful of astronauts, all of whom have spent time in space, to reflect on the miracle of life on Earth from their unique perspectives. Emily S. Whitten: Awesome Con Round Up
Sweet Christmas, everyone – this year’s Awesome Con was busy as all get-out and chock-full of cool things to see and do, and con season is rushing by so fast that I’m just now getting to my recap! (We can also blame the con crud for this, alas. It’s been following me around for a solid month.) As always, there were way more activities than one mere mortal could get to. And on top of that, this was the first year where I really saw multiple events surrounding the con that were either not directly affiliated with the con but inspired by it, or connected to it but not part of the main con experience.

So let’s start there. First off, I was part of a pre-con round-table interview Awesome Con set up with the inestimable Stan Lee. Stan answered many great questions. He talked about what...

Exploring David Bowie's Sci-Fi Fascination
Tony Sokol Jan 8, 2020

Nobody would blame you if you thought David Bowie was really an alien.

When David Bowie slipped away in 2016, he went out in a flurry of artistic output and a regret that he had more to say. His final album, Blackstar, held out the universal promise of the endless possibilities that can be found in vast emptiness of space. Bowie was an out of this world artist steeped in all forms of science fiction, and was even inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in June 2013.

Bowie first cemented his public image as a stellar performer, we can’t really blame anyone for mistaking the man and the Starman. The rock and rolling space invader had been telling us not to be “afraid of the man in the moon because it's only me" since he promised to "Love You Till Tuesday" in 1967.

Bowie blasted...

While we will remember David Bowie for his songs and the eye-catching way he chose to perform them, his legacy isn't limited to his own art. In addition to being a creator and a performer, Bowie, who died this week at age 69, was also someone who inspired many people, both famous and not. Today, we're celebrating Bowie’s legacy by looking at some of the artists who've covered his songs. 1. 'Space Oddity' Astronaut Chris Hadfield Honors David Bowie: 'Goodbye Starman'
Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield shot to fame a few years ago thanks to a clever cover of David Bowie's classic tune "Space Oddity," which Hadfield recorded aboard the International Space Station. In the wake of Bowie's sudden death this weekend at age 69, Hadfield shared another tribute to the legendary artist.

The astronaut mourned the musician on Twitter, where he posted a message praising Bowie for his pioneering place in pop culture history. "Ashes to ashes, dust to stardust," Hadfield wrote. "Your brilliance inspired us all. Goodbye Starman."

— Chris Hadfield (@Cmdr_Hadfield) January 11, 2016 Though Hadfield himself didn't re-post his "Space Oddity" video, many other media outlets did, and it's not hard to see why: The commander's poignant take on the iconic song was reportedly one of Bowie's favorite cover versions of the tune.

12 Awesome Things To Do In Zero Gravity
Nasa/Wikipedia

The astronauts we regularly fling out into the great unknown are diligently pushing the boundaries of human knowledge every single day and, in short, space exploration is very exciting and very important.

Plus, they get to whizz around in micro-gravity and make space burritos, which is arguably just as cool.

This collection of micro-gravity japes features some of the best examples of astronauts arsing around performing valuable experiments for our entertainment and delight (no, we will not be including that time Kate Upton did a zero-g photo shoot in nothing but a gold bikini. Compelling as that was).

The most prolific and fascinating micro-gravity maverick is the inimitable (and weirdly sexy) Commander Chris Hadfield, who spent 166 days in space. Of course, a lot of very important work went on in those 166 days, but even the commander of the Iss gets some downtime and, during that downtime, Commander Hadfield...

Benedict Cumberbatch at an event for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Benedict Cumberbatch is related to Alan Turing, say genealogists
Benedict Cumberbatch at an event for The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (2014)
Benedict Cumberbatch is related to Alan Turing, according to genealogy website Ancestry.

It's thought that Cumberbatch is in fact 17th cousins with codebreaker Turing, who he plays in The Imitation Game.

Genealogists claim the lineage can be traced back to the 14th century, and that the pair are both related to the first Earl of Somerset John Beaufort, born in 1373.

UK content manager for Ancestry Miriam Silverman said."It would seem that there is a flair for espionage and bravery that has descended down multiple generations of Benedict Cumberbatch's family tree.

"It's amazing to think that when stepping into the role of Alan Turing, he would not only be portraying a world-class code breaker but a real life relation."

Other apparent relations to Cumberbatch include Noel Carlisle Rees, a third cousin twice removed who was a member of the British Military Intelligence who helped in the escape of thousands...

William Shatner Tweeted At Nasa And Got Exactly The Response You Hoped For
William Shatner
On Saturday night, William Shatner took to social media with a question. It was simple in nature but when the Captain of the USS Enterprise wants a status update, you better hope someone is manning the comm station for a full briefing. How is @Nasa doing today? — William Shatner (@WilliamShatner) August 2, 2014 Luckily for Nasa — forerunner to the august body known as Starfleet — they were on standby. Everyone will be glad to know Iss is running at peak condition. However, they could have been a bit more prompt in their report. Hopefully Commander Swanson reprimands his crew for such a lapse in response time. An hour and a half of radio silence is unacceptable! @WilliamShatner Good day, Captain. #Iss is in standard orbit and Commander Swanson has the conn. Hope you’re having a great weekend! — Nasa (@Nasa) August 2, 2014 But Shatner was unfazed. Perhaps he was merely glad all is well...

Chris Hadfield, Epic Meal Time Celebrate Canada Day On YouTube
July 1st is Canada Day, and a few of our friends from north of the border have taken to YouTube to show pride for their native land. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has released a folk song about Canadian culture, while the Canucks over at Epic Meal Time have contributed a huge, poutine-filled monstrosity dedicated to their home country. Hadfield, who is best known for his space-borne cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" (which has since been removed from YouTube as part of a legal agreement), has kept himself plugged into the Internet even after returning to Earth. Hadfield is now retired, which gives him plenty of time to team up with his brother Dave and record a song about Hockey Night In Canada, camping, strongly-pronounced R's, and everything else that makes Canada Canada. For Epic Meal Time, a Canada Day celebration has become a yearly tradition, and 2014 is no different.

Astronauts Are Now Making Vine Videos In Space
Astronaut Reid Wiseman has given his followers a six-second science lesson through Vine. Wiseman, who is currently on board the International Space Station, has sent out the first Vine from space. Wiseman's Vine is a time-lapse video that shows the sun dipping near the "terminator line" (which divides the light side of Earth from the dark side) before rising back up above the planet. The short video does a good job of illustrating the Iss' parallel trajectory to the terminator line. Like the world's great empires, the sun never sets on the International Space Station. Astronauts have previously used YouTube to educate viewers and provide awe-inspiring footage from space. Nasa has offered plenty of official videos from the Iss, and astronaut Chris Hadfield's space-borne cover of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" was one of the biggest hits of 2013 before it was removed due to an expired contract with Bowie's label.

Nasa’s ‘Space To Ground’ Provides The Latest Updates From Space
Now that Chris Hadfield has returned to Earth for good, the YouTube community needs a new web series about life in space. A new option from Nasa will help fill the void. The administration's Reel channel is the home of Space to Ground, a series that chronicles the weekly goings-on aboard the International Space Station. Space to Ground is presented as a short news program, with segments about current astronomical events, brainy zero-gravity experiments, and potential sightings of the Station as it orbits Earth. The presentation is as dry as space ice cream, but cut Nasa a break. After all, they're scientists, not presenters, and I'm guessing Bill Nye and Neil Degrasse Tyson were busy. The point is, the presentation itself is of little importance. Space to Ground is a series about the cosmos, and the cosmos are cool enough that they don't need an excitable inflection to make them more interesting.
