Speaking with Subhash K Jha, actor Shubham Vardhan talks about the importance and the impact of playing his role in Amazon’s Stolen and more in this fascinating interview.
Would you say Stolen is your first big break?
Yes, it definitely feels like my first big break right now.
How did you land the part of the conscientious Raman Bansal in Stolen?
One day, Abhishek called me and said I should meet Gaurav and Karan in Delhi. I went in thinking it might be about a writing opportunity—I genuinely had no clue they were considering me for the role of Raman. We started chatting—Karan, Gaurav, Swapnil and I—and the conversation just flowed. We spoke about everything… from filmmaking and geopolitics to space science! Then suddenly, Karan asked me to audition for the role. It caught me off guard. I took a few days to process it, and eventually went to his office.

Stolen actor, Abhishek Banerjee speaks To Subhash K Jha about his career so far and what is coming up next.
Abhishek, one after another lauded performances, how do you manage it?
Ha ha. I don’t do it. Someone up there does it. But yes, it has been a time of terrific reviews for a slew of performances. I enjoy acting and I really I don’t have any favourite genre. For me acting is like life. It’s my therapy, it’s my oxygen so every time I get to act no matter whether it’s comedy or drama or action… hero or villain… whatever… I think I’m just very happy every time I’m on set.
Which is your favourite genre of acting?

The fixer, Rana Naidu, returns for a second season—but this time, it’s his own life that needs fixing more than anyone else’s. Netflix has just dropped all eight episodes of Rana Naidu Season 2, and while the show may have strayed from the gritty originality that defined its first season, it still delivers its fair share of drama and high-stakes action. The show truly excels in its unflinching portrayal of dysfunctional and troubled family dynamics, territory that mainstream entertainment often hesitates to explore. Alongside the returning main characters, the new season welcomes some fresh faces—and in the article below, we take a closer look at them.
Rana Daggubati as Rana Naidu
Rana Daggubati returns to play the titular character in the new season, and his usual charm and swag as the no-nonsense ‘fixer’ is going through the roofs. I don’t know about the rest of you,...

Karan Tejpal’s debut feature “Stolen” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. It’s a breathtaking survival thriller that will leave you awestruck and, at times, might even make you grip the edge of your seat. But it doesn’t merely entertain as a fictional drama; it explores the underbelly of our society and highlights complex issues such as illegal surrogacy, etc. And as one of the most political films in recent memory, ‘Stolen’ portrays the confrontation of two Indias.
Today, I had the pleasure of having a conversation with the film’s director, Karan Tejpal, its producer, Gaurav Dhingra, and the one and only Abhishek Banerjee, who played the character of Gautam Bansal. The socially and politically conscious cast and crew touched on multiple complex issues, both within the film industry, the festival circuits, and in society at large. Like “Stolen” itself, their answers were bold and valiant. I hope you enjoy the conversation.

Karan Tejpal’s “Stolen” (2025), backed by Anurag Kashyap, Gaurav Dhingra, Kiran Rao, Nikhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane, is a scintillating look into what Vir Das has popularised as ‘Two Indias’.
As I watched the end credits of “Stolen” roll, I screamed internally, ‘This is one of the most important films made about the current state of our country in the last decade.’ This also shows that in the last decade, how sorry has been the state of Bollywood that you cannot recall any other Bollywood film that exposes the horrors of fake news apart from Sudhir Mishra’s “Afwaah” (2023). The other Bollywood movie that comes in close comparison to “Stolen” is “Nh-10” (2015); coincidentally, released exactly a decade ago.
But “Nh-10” or “Afwaah” were good films trying to fit into the Bollywood template. “Stolen” does not do that. Yet, while watching “Stolen,” I said to myself, This can’t happen. People are not so good.

If you had asked me a couple of years back which import of American network television I imagined being used as a template for multiple adaptations and remakes, the Ann Bidermann-created seven-season Showtime drama “Ray Donovan” wouldn’t have been anywhere near the vicinity of that imagination. That could be accounted for by the show’s general mediocrity of quality, which coasted primarily on the performances of the central cast and a killer premise that can generate storylines for multiple seasons, but not necessarily compelling ones.
If examined further, the central issue of the source, which is also being extended to its official remake, “Rana Naidu,” is in its evocation of “The Sopranos” ethos—the professional world against the personal dilemma. “Ray Donovan,” and to that end Rana Naidu’s first season’s misstep, is in its expectation that its personal subplots are similar or more compelling than the central plot thread,...

How Aamir Khan Stands Out In The Digital Age With His Unconventional Decisions
In a career spanning nearly three decades, Aamir Khan may have catapulted to become one of Bollywood’s biggest superstars, but he has always prioritized content above everything. He is known for selecting meaningful stories that can deliver powerful narratives to the masses instead of solely focusing on commercial appeal.
The Taare Zameen Par star has always taken the unconventional route, creating trends instead of following them. With every new project, Khan has proved that glory doesn’t come from glitz or gimmicks but great storytelling instead.
In another such unconventional move, the actor has reportedly turned down a staggering ₹125 crore Ott offer in favor of a big-screen release. With a firm belief in the collective power of theatrical experiences, Aamir Khan has challenged the trend of lucrative deals with streaming platforms by preferring shared audience reaction over solo streaming clicks.

Director Karan Tejpal speaks in depth with Subhash K Jha about the making of his stunning debut drama Stolen.
Where did you get the idea for Stolen?
The idea for Stolen began with a video I saw of the 2018 Karbi Anglong lynching in Assam. It left a knot of fear in my stomach—a visceral, physical reaction I couldn’t shake. I felt stuck, disturbed, and the only way I knew to process that feeling was to write. The story of the Bansal brothers grew from that moment, where two young men were brutally killed by a mob that mistakenly believed they were child kidnappers—driven by panic, misinformation, and manipulated videos circulating rapidly on WhatsApp. That tragedy became the seed for the film’s narrative and emotional terrain.
How much back-research did you do on mob lynchings?
As I began researching what came to be known as the “WhatsApp lynchings,...

Is Stolen Based On Real Events(Photo Credit –Prime Video)
Abhishek Banerjee’s film Stolen garnered widespread attention after its debut on Amazon Prime Video. The film also sparked discussion over its powerful narrative, skilled cast, and meaningful social commentary. People who have seen the film or its preview are searching for confirmation about its connection to actual events. The movie Stolen accurately portrays an actual horrific event that took place in Assam in 2018.
The 2018 Karbi Anglong Lynching Case
The film Stolen draws its inspiration from the actual Karbi Anglong lynching event, which occurred in 2018. Nilotpal Das and Abhijit Nath were moving through the Karbi Anglong district in Assam. A false message spread through WhatsApp, which claimed that child abductors were operating in the region. This created ultimate panic and fear in the villagers.
Believing the false information, the villagers attacked Neelotpal and Abhijit. Although both pleaded for their lives and explained their innocence,...

One of the more interesting revelations of the 2023 edition of the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival so far has been the way in which Indian filmmakers are employing genre templates in their storytelling but then subverting the audience’s expectations regarding what to expect from that genre. Devashish Makhija’s ‘Joram’ subverts the expected beats of the survival thriller genre to ask probing questions about tribal displacement and who bears the moral responsibility of the disenfranchisement that is caused by unchecked post-capitalist forces.
Varun Grover’s debut feature, ‘All India Rank,’ explores the dangers of nostalgia through a coming-of-age narrative, looking back with a critical and introspective lens at some of the fault lines within the social fabric of our society that have only increased with time. Director Karan Tejpal’s debut feature ‘Stolen’ is another film of this ilk, using the overarching structure of a conventional genre film – a...

Filmmaking, once upon a time, had two very balanced genres – the Masala films and the films that had a purpose. The ones that could evoke empathy and push you to ponder. But it has been a long time since there has been a good social commentary that might make us stop, take time, and think! Directed by Karan Tejpal, Stolen falls into the second category. There is a visceral anguish at the core of this….this…thriller? Is director Karan Tejpal’s directorial debut a thriller? As much as Devashish Makhija’s Joram in which Manoj Bajpayee was a man on the run with a baby, wrongly accused of murdering his wife.
In Stolen, there is a baby and two men on the run with a woman who may or may not be the baby Champa’s mother. Who knows what lies underneath what we tend to think of as the civilized surface?
Tejpal’s bewildering, beguiling, but tragically identifiable world of deception and disempowerment is crusted by a powerful sense of purpose and crested by a highly contagious sense of urgency .
This is a world where babies are snatched at railway platforms. When one such incident happens one night on a deserted railway platform, well-to-do brothers Gautam and Raman Bansal(played with compelling credibility...

Rana Naidu S2 Trailer Review: Rana Daggubati, Venkatesh & Arjun Rampal Peak The Curiosity! (Photo Credit –Facebook)
Indian Ray Donavan Rana Daggubati is back with his stylized family action drama Rana Naidu S2! For those who do not know, the series is about a family where the son, Rana Daggubati, and his father, Venkatesh, are at loggerheads while tackling dysfunctional family dynamics. Ideally, the entire Naidu Ckan needs some serious therapy lessons, but they are back doing what they do best – create ruckus in Mumbai!
The only thing that is more consistent than Rakhi Sawant‘s search for a husband in Mumbai is the Naidu family’s inability to resolve anything without resorting to extreme measures and questionable life choices. The trailer for season 2 is unapologetically intense, with high-octane stunt scenes and building drama!

Stolen Trailer Review: Anurag Kashyap Is The Og! (Photo Credit – Youtube)
What do you expect from a film by Anurag Kashyap? It would be gripping, raw, and intense at different points and all at one point! The trailer of Stolen falls into the latter category. The film is produced by Anurag Kashyap, Kiran Rao, Nikkhil Advani, and Vikramaditya Motwane, and the trailer clearly showcases the stamp of such great names!
Directed by Karan Tejpal, the film is a thriller. The trailer establishes the narrative very quickly. The story follows Gautam in the early hours of the morning at a railway station, where he comes to pick up his brother Raman for a lavish wedding. But their plans unravel when they meet Jhumpa, a frantic mother searching for her kidnapped baby.
What follows next is Raman insisting on helping the lady while Gautam categorically does not want to be part of it.

Manoj plays a cop who accidentally kills a criminal who comes back to haunt him as a ghost. The idea is, where does the cop hide when he is pursued by a criminal? Let’s see if the audience finds it funny. This is a new genre for Manoj and me. We start shooting in June. Besides Manoj, I can only confirm Abhishek Banerjee at the moment. The Stree franchise has created a lot of buzz among audiences and has emerged as the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024. While the movie continues to entertain audiences on digital platforms, a new controversy has stirred up a storm among the fans of Shraddha Kapoor.
A recent comment by a producer didn’t sit well with fandoms. In an alleged remark referring to Shraddha as a ‘Chudail ki tarah’ (like a witch), social media has gone into frenzy, calling out the tone and perceived disrespect toward the lead actress of the franchise.
During a conversation with Komal Nahta, director Amar Kaushik recalled how producer Dinesh Vijan once jokingly commented that Shraddha “laughs like a chudail,” which, in turn, influenced her casting in Stree.

Abhishek Banerjee reveals to Subhash K Jha what secret project he was shooting fr the Kumbh Mela, his upcoming projects plus so much more
Abhishek, what is this secret project you are shooting at Kumbh Mela?
Hi Sir, it is Bharat Bala’s film. A R Rahman is doing the music. I, Shahana Goswami, and Neeraj Kabi are the actors in it.
How has your life changed with success?
Nothing. Just message boxes are fuller than ever! And I don’t have social media managers like the stars do. What has changed is the recognition and love on the streets. It’s overwhelming sometimes, especially the kids. I feel very lucky that now I am known across ages and classes in India and abroad. And this without any paid PR.
More diamonds for the wife and more milk for your cat?
Wife is not into diamonds and Kiwi hates milk.
