Another whimsical short from animation filmmaker Elizabeth Hobbs, better known as Lizzy Hobbs (she also made the short film I'm Ok a few years ago). Her latest is titled The Debutante, a 9-minute animated short telling an amusing story of a woman in the 1930s. This short premiered at film festivals back in 2022 and has been tour the fest circuit ever since, finally getting an online debut this week thanks to Vimeo. A spirited young woman persuades a hyena from London Zoo to take her place at a dreaded dinner dance being held in her honour... The Debutante is based on a short story written by the artist Leonora Carrington, who was presented at the court of King George V then became a debutante in 1936. It's animated with ink & paint on paper, with some collage & cut-out, captured under a rostrum camera.

Production is underway on the second series of Funny Woman, the Sky comedy drama based on the 2014 novel by Nick Hornby.

Gemma Arterton stars as a budding comedian inspired by Lucille Ball, who attempts to make a name for herself in the oppressive, male dominated culture of 1960s London. Production is now underway on the second series, which will comprise four hour-long episodes.

The synopsis for the new series reads as follows:

Series 2 finds Sophie on a high. She is the nation’s favourite TV comedy star; she’s got a group of good friends and her romance with Dennis is full of promise. But trouble is just round the corner: Dennis’s divorce will take three years; Sophie’s new sitcom flops and she uncovers a devastating family secret.

“The Long Shadow,” a true crime drama by “Hijack” and “Lupin” creator George Kay, has revealed a stellar cast.

She has been cast in the third season of explosive political drama series Cobra, playing populist Defence Secretary Victoria Dalton in the UK government, opposite Robert Carlyle’s returning Prime Minister Robert Sutherland and his Chief of Staff, Anna Marshall (Victoria Hamilton).

Horrocks, also known for BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous, has most recently been appearing opposite Samson Kayo in Sky paramedics comedy Bloods.

The latest six-part season of Cobra is titled Rebellion and will follow the aftermath of an unforeseen environmental disaster that reveals itself as a crisis of corruption in the arms industry and the rise of shadowy corporate security firms, challenging Sutherland to decide what he is willing to sacrifice to stay in power.

A Discovery of Witches Season 2 (January)

Based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy about the forbidden love between a powerful witch and a centuries-old vampire, A Discovery Of Witches debuted on Sky in autumn 2018 (read our reviews here) and was renewed for series two and three almost straight away.

Gemma Arterton (“Black Narcissus”) will headline “Funny Girl,” a series adaptation of Nick Hornby’s bestselling novel for Sky and Now.

Arterton stars as Barbara Parker, a force of nature who takes London by storm during the cultural explosion of the 1960s. The series follows the character’s journey from Blackpool beauty queen to comedy superstar and nation’s sweetheart. Clare-Hope Ashitey (“Riviera”), Arsher Ali (“Informer”) and Alexa Davies (“White House Farm”) will also star.

The series is written by multi-award-winning writer Morwenna Banks (“Damned”) and directed by BAFTA nominee Oliver Parker, who directed Arterton’s film debut “St. Trinian’s.”

Comcast-owned Sky has revealed multiple commissions, including a Gemma Arterton comedy based on Nick Hornby novel Funny Girl.

The new Gemma Arterton comedy series is about a young woman from Blackpool finding her comic voice in the male dominated world of the 1960s sitcom. Clare-Hope Ashitey (Riviera), Arsher Ali (Informer) and Alexa Davies (White House Farm) will also star with more cast to be confirmed.

Potboiler and Rebel Park Productions are producing, in association with Sky Studios. Executive producers are Nick Hornby, Gemma Arterton, Morwenna Banks, Andrea Calderwood, Gail Egan, Jessica Parker and Jessica Malik. White House Farm is a dramatisation of the Jeremy Bamber story, a horrible case that saw the killing of five members of the same family including two children. The show came to ITV in 2020 in week by week episodes and has now arrived on Netflix in a full boxset. It’s a compelling look at what happened in 1985 at a remote farmhouse and the man who was convicted of the murders, as well as the dogged cop who wouldn’t settle for the obvious answer despite the negative impact it had on his career.

Exclusive: Welsh actress Alexa Davies, who stars in the upcoming UK series Dead Pixels on the CW, and White House Farm on HBO Max, has signed with Atlas Artists for management.

Davies portrays Meg in Dead Pixels, which was acquired by the CW from BBC Studios earlier this year. Based on his 2016 Channel 4 short, Avatards, Dead Pixels was written by BAFTA-winning writer, Jon Brown and produced by Peep Show’s Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong. It centers on friends Meg (Davies), Nicky and Usman, whose world revolves around their obsession with a fantasy computer game.

HBO Max has picked the U.S. rights to British crime drama White House Farm starring The Irishman’s Stephen Graham and Black ’47’s Freddie Fox.

The WarnerMedia-owned streaming service will air the six-part series in the States next year after striking a deal with All3Media International.

It is the latest British title snapped up by the streamer, following deals with BBC Studios for Doctor Who as well as Ricky Gervais’ The Office, Top Gear, Luther, The Honorable Woman, Pure, Trigonometry, Stath Lets Flats, Home and Ghosts.

“Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” the perfectly titled sequel to “Mamma Mia!” (it opens 10 years to the week after the first film), kicks off on a bubbly high. It’s 1979, and Donna, the free-spirited expatriate-on-a-Greek-island innkeeper played by Meryl Streep, is now played, at the end of her Oxford undergraduate days, by Lily James, in honey-gold ringlets, with a smile that could light up several city blocks. She comes onstage to deliver a graduation speech, and instead tugs the gown off her shoulders to do an unexpectedly fiery rendition of “When I Kissed the Teacher.”

Ten years ago, in “Mamma Mia!,” most of the actors approached singing Abba songs as if they’d been given a free pass on karaoke night. Some belted, some crooned, some warbled, and even the great Streep kept declaiming the lyrics as if she thought every line of singing was supposed to be a line of acting.

Half sequel, half prequel, and almost entirely disconnected from the film being sold by its trailers, Ol Parker’s “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” is an amiable, energetic followup to the 2008 smash hit. It’s also missing its biggest star, Meryl Streep as Donna Sheridan, and her absence is keenly felt. Thank goodness then for Lily James, whose performance as a young version of Streep’s irrepressible heroine finally seems like the one to catapult the actress to the next level of her career, while also keeping the dizzy (and dizzying) musical afloat.

Set five years after the events of the first film, “Here We Go Again” returns to the picturesque Greek island of Kalokairi, where Donna’s daughter Sophie (a returning Amanda Seyfried) is attempting to make her mother’s long-running dreams of turning their rustic farmhouse into a glitzy hotel come true, though noticeably without the help...

Universal top brass are preparing for the global launch of Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again this week, exactly 10 years after Mamma Mia! took off en route to a $609.8m final global tally.

The musical sequel, based like the original on Abba songs, ventures into 41 territories this week, day-and-date with Friday’s [July 20] North American bow in approximately 3,200 theatres.

Today saw the advent of the 2018 film education charity Into Film Awards, the 4th annual awards ceremony celebrating young filmmakers from across the UK.

Selected by a panel of industry leaders including Barbara Broccoli, Jamie Bell, Peter Lord from Aardman Animations, casting director Lucy Bevan and director Ben Wheatley (Free Fire) awards across 11 categories were given to a range of youngsters aged 9 to 19 at the red-carpet event hosted by TV & Radio presenter Gemma Cairney.

Stars handing out the Awards included Gemma Arterton, Martin Freeman, Gwendoline Christie, Will Poulter, Craig Roberts, Kevin Guthrie, Rhianna Dhillon, Hermione Corfield, Alexa Davies, Fionn O’Shea, Georgina Campbell, Rosie Day, Susan Wokoma, Katie Leung, Tomiwa Edun, and George Mackay.

Legendary Pictures has released the first trailer for the musical comedy Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, the sequel to the hit 2008 musical. If you enjoyed the first film, which was released ten years ago, then I'm sure you'll like what you see in this trailer for the sequel. Breaking Glass Pictures has acquired North American rights to former Screen International Star Of Tomorrow Alex Taylor’s directorial debut, Spaceship.

The distributor is planning a limited theatrical release in November, followed by DVD and VoD, for the film that had its world premiere at SXSW.

Spaceship centres on teenage cyber-goth Lucidia, whose mother died mysteriously seven years ago in the family swimming pool. Her father, Gabriel, is an archaeologist who can’t move on.

When Lucidia disappears in an apparent alien abduction, Gabriel is forced to confront her strange outsider friends and meets Tegan, a girl obsessed with unicorns and black holes. The story is told from multiple points of view, both teenage and adult.
