His daughter Olivia has been staying with her grandfather as Jay can barely manage to get out of bed most of the time. Dances With Films 2024: ‘Itch!’ Review
Image
Stars: Bari Kang, Olivia Kang, Douglas Stirling, Patrick Michael Valley, Ximena Uribe, Mia Ventura Lucas | Written and Directed by Bari Kang

Known for his crime thrillers Lucky and The Scrapper, writer/director Bari Kang makes the transition to horror with his latest film, Itch!, which had its World Premiere at Dances With Films. It’s the second film from the festival I’ve reviewed, and like Bleeding, it looks at a supernatural creature, in this case zombies, from a different perspective and with an emphasis on the psychological as well as the physical risks of dealing with them.

Jay (Bari Kang) recently lost his wife, something their young daughter Olivia (Olivia Kang) can’t seem to accept, refusing to speak and writing notes asking to visit her mother. That, and a growing pile of past due medical bills, have him preoccupied to the point he’s not paying attention to...

Review: ‘Lucky’ Takes a Steep Descent into NYC’s Criminal Underworld
It’s taken five years for Lucky (Bari Kang) to save the money and find the footing — no matter how much illegal activity both pursuits warranted — necessary to acquire a bride believable enough to fool Ins and earn his green card. He has a legit job as a mechanic with his “brother” Ricky’s (Daniel Jordano) garage during the day, helps “lose” customers’ taxis at night to earn extra cash from a fence while they receive insurance checks, and even procured himself a license from the shady jack-of-all-trades Sunny (Obaid Kadwani) to look the part of a legitimate immigrant before the law renders it official. Finally the time has arrived to take that next step forward just as fate enters to show this kind-hearted soul the irony of his name.

Kang as writer/director foreshadows this quickly spiraling destruction of his character’s dream by starting his debut feature Lucky...

‘Lucky’ Trailer: There’s No Such Thing as Easy Money In NYC-Made Indie — Watch
Bari Kang in Lucky (2016)
There’s no such thing as easy money. Now repeat it: there’s no such thing as easy money. Now tell that to Lucky.

In Bari Kang’s “Lucky,” the newbie filmmaker pulls quadruple duty — he wrote the film, directed it, produced it, and stars in it as its eponymous character — in a story about a striving young immigrant who gets mixed up in some very bad stuff (with some very bad people) when he becomes convinced that he can make cash quickly.
