Contrary to popular (internet joke) belief, “Dimension 20” Brennan Lee Mulligan is not abandoning his career to make custom American Girl doll shoes. No, not only has Mulligan struck a new three-year development deal at his longtime home media company Dropout (formerly CollegeHumor) but he’ll be visiting the team at Critical Role as their Game Master for the next core campaign of the tabletop role-playing game, actual-play series’.
Premiering Thursday, Oct. 2, the currently untitled Campaign 4 will be “ushering in a new era with new legends to be forged in a brand new world,” per Critical Role. San Diego Comic-Con is rolling out its schedule for the 2025 convention this week, which runs from July 24–27. It will likely be a quieter convention this year, since neither Marvel Studios nor DC Studios are planning a major panel covering their upcoming projects. After 50 years creeping from the margins of popular culture into the mainstream, Dungeons & Dragons is now bigger than ever. Evolving beyond its roots as a pen-and-paper tabletop RPG (Ttrpg), D&d has inspired countless imitators, novels, movies, video games, and — most importantly — generations of storytellers and creators, who learned to broaden the scope of their imagination by playing the game.
It’s those storytellers now whose impact in the era of YouTube, Twitch livestreaming, and podcasting have reinvented Dungeons & Dragons for a new generation, capitalizing on the rise...

The Legend of Vox Machina is an animated series with three finished seasons available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, with a fourth on the way. The show is based on a series of Dungeons & Dragons sessions put on by the members of Critical Role, a group of voice actors who have spun their hang-out sessions into a media empire.
Because seasons 1, 2, and 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina each covered roughly 30 live Critical Role gameplay sessions, I expect season 4 to take us through episodes 73-100 or so. The Vox Machina campaign runs for 121 episodes in total. That means the creators and voice actors of Critical Role may be planning a fifth season to round out the story, or they could pack all the remaining episodes in season 4. We know they're working on a new animated adaptation of The Mighty Nein, the campaign they played after Vox Machina was finished.

As epic and funny as The Legend of Vox Machina can be, there are also the moments where it reminds viewers that it is based upon a Dungeons & Dragons campaign that did not hold its punches when it came to its sadder moments. From grappling with death to deeply hurtful betrayals and even personal conflicts between party members, the last three seasons have given its fans almost as many tearjerkers as it has moments to cheer the party on or just burst into uncontrollable laughter.
That being said, it's hard to know for certain which moments were actually the saddest. Death isn't necessarily a permanent thing in this world, but it is extremely difficult to undo and often exacts a heavy toll in exchange for cheating the natural order of things. Likewise, the moments where the party faced personal issues among its members also had raised stakes of their own.

Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina saw multiple villains vanquished in the last few episodes, but the most fitting end for the show's longest-running villain was a missed opportunity. By The Legend of Vax Machina season 3's ending, three different villains were vanquished, and another either dead or banished. The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 dropped its final episodes of the season, delivering an emotional ending that set up season 4's new villain. The core cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina” is pretty unique among voice actors, or actors of any stripe, really. It’s rare that an actor originates the concept for a character, lives with them for nearly a decade, improvises nearly 400 hours of material, and participates closely in the character design, scripting, and storyboarding of an animated series — all before they step into the booth to record their lines.
The Prime Video series (about a group of fantasy fuck-ups who might just be the heroes the magical land of Exandra needs) balances that wealth of experience that the “Critical Role” cast — Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Matthew Mercer, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, and Travis Willingham — all have with an adventuring party full of guest voices. Rachel House, Stephanie Beatriz, Gina Torres, and the late, great Lance Reddick, among others, all sub in for characters originally voiced...

The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 premieres October 3 on Prime Video, and Screen Rant had a fantastic time chatting with the creative minds behind the show. Fans are about to be plunged into a darker version of Exandria than they have previously experienced. While based on Matthew Mercer's Critical Role actual play campaign, the animated show continues to spread its wings and take liberties with its source material, though the presence of the original writers and cast ensures it always maintains its DnD-heavy spirit.

This doesn't stop his beloved Keyleth (Marisha Ray) from feeling the loss, however, or Vex (Laura Bailey) from feeling the guilt. But whatever inner demons and external rifts they undergo,...
