The CW’s ‘The Republic of Sarah’ Indulges a Mild Separatist Fantasy: TV Review
Image
“The Republic of Sarah” starts straightforwardly enough. Opening in the idyllic New Hampshire town of Greylock, the show introduces us to history teacher Sarah Cooper (Stella Baker), her friends, and to her own surprise, her estranged brother Danny (Luke Mitchell). Though he abruptly left Greylock, their abusive alcoholic mother (Megan Follows) and his fiancé Corinne (Hope Lauren) years ago, he’s now back as a representative of an overbearing oil company that’s ready to use every legal loophole available in order to bulldoze the entire town and dredge up the riches lurking right underneath. Almost despite herself, Sarah finds herself stepping in front of the first bulldozer, readying for an all-out fight to save the town she loves.

So far, so classic. But what “The Republic of Sarah” does next is what sets it apart, for better and for worse.

Rather than just try to protest the corporate invaders,...

The Chances of Looking For Alaska Season 2 Are Pretty Slim, but Never Say Never
Looking For Alaska hit Hulu this weekend, but fans are already buzzing about a potential season two. Seeing that it took nearly 15 years to bring John Green's 2005 novel to the screen, it makes sense that fans would want even more episodes. Though the TV adaptation is currently being billed as a miniseries, the cast and crew have already started thinking about a potential second season.

During an interview with Popsugar, Landry Bender (who plays Chip's girlfriend Sara) admitted that a second season is something she and her costars "have talked about it a lot." "I think this season definitely tells a really specific story," she explained. "There are a lot of other angles and avenues to explore. I would leave that up to our producers and writers. I think it explores a group of really deep, layered kids. So there's a lot of ways you could go with that if they wanted to.

John Green is known for writing complex and sad stories about teenagers, and Looking For Alaska is no different. After years of waiting, the 2005 novel is finally being adapted for the small screen with Hulu's new miniseries, which premiered on Oct. 18. Though the show includes quite a few nods to the book, it also expands more on minor characters, including Chip's girlfriend Sara, played by Landry Bender.

We recently had a chance to talk with the 19-year-old actress and she dished on everything from her "crazy" audition process (She actually auditioned for two other characters originally!) to how the series shows a whole new side to her once "one-dimensional" character.

Hulu's Looking for Alaska: Grade It!
Hulu took viewers back to 2005 and the land of sweet, sweet O.C. tunes with Friday’s premiere of Looking for Alaska.

Adapted by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The O.C., Gossip Girl) from John Green’s Ya novel, the 2005-set limited series follows Miles (Boardwalk Empire‘s Charlie Plummer), a book-ish teen from Orlando with a fascination for famous last words. He leaves home to attend a woodsy Alabama boarding school in an effort to find the meaning behind his favorite “last words” quote: “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.”

‘Looking for Alaska’ Review: High-School Melodrama Done Right
Charlie Plummer
Miles “Pudge” Halter (Charlie Plummer), the teen hero of Hulu’s Looking for Alaska, is obsessed with famous last words, like poet François Rabelais’ declaration, “I go to seek a Great Perhaps.” But as he confesses to his new friends at an elite Alabama boarding school, he’s never actually read the works of the writers he quotes, just their biographies. It’s a shallow perspective on the artists’ lives, and Looking for Alaska — based on John Green’s debut Ya novel — could risk being a similarly superficial take on...

Josh Schwartz Says Hulu’s ‘Looking for Alaska’ Won’t Explain What Happened to Alaska
John Green in Bystander Revolution (2014)
(Warning: This post contains spoilers for John Green’s novel “Looking for Alaska” and, therefore, some for Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of “Looking for Alaska”)

Fans of John Green’s “Looking for Alaska” who don’t want the upcoming Hulu adaptation of the beloved 2005 Ya novel to clear up the ambiguity at the center of the story can breathe a sigh of relief, because the limited series’ creator, Josh Schwartz, says they won’t explain anything.

“We will never know what happened that night,” the “Gossip Girl” and “O.C.” mastermind told reporters during the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour Friday. “And if you’ve seen the first episode, that is as much as you will see of the event. And it is a mystery what happened and that is part of what the characters will have to grapple with, and the audience.”
