Chicago – The Dallas International Film Festival (Diff) highlights new voices and especially Texas voices, and a charming slice-of-life Texas film … with shades of Richard Linklater’s “Slacker” dynamic … is screening at Diff on Monday, April 28th. “Party People” is a comedic slice-of-life about college Freshman Year and that first important party, and writer/co-creator Lindsey Robertson and hubby/director Joey LePage will represent at the screening. For the film’s tickets/info, click Party People.
It’s the first week at a Texas college for several sets of Freshman and their assignment is to get to the first major party of the school year. In that pursuit, a series of misadventures occur, including a different time/place for high school relationships, new roommate interactions and older Freshman-in-name coeds who are approaching the night in a different way. They all come together at the “big school” and have hope/dreams for...

Exclusive: Comedian Kiran Deol has announced that her debut special, JoySuck, is set to premiere via Comedy Dynamics on Tuesday, April 8th.
In the hour filmed at Dynasty Typewriter in Los Angeles, Deol tackles a landscape which can seem grim, when plenty of things seem to suck. Between the pandemic, inflation, and our era’s crazy politics, the comedian offers an alternative: find the Joy, despite the Suck.
Said Deol, “This is a special made exactly for times like these — to find the light and get back to your joy, no matter what dark things may be happening. I hope its message offers a touchstone and way to cope — by taking tough situations and making them funny.”
An actress and a filmmaker, as well as a comedian, Deol was most recently seen leading the zombie flick Didn’t Die, directed by Meera Menon, which premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Meera Menon’s Didn’t Die begins with a premise that feels almost inevitable in the wake of a world still reeling from global crises: in a zombie-infested America, a podcast host clings to an ever-dwindling audience, desperate to stay relevant even as civilization collapses. But beneath its wry humor and monochrome aesthetic, the zombie comedyDidn’t Die is less about the undead and more about the isolation that lingers even when survival is technically possible. How do we communicate when everything we once relied on — community, culture, even basic infrastructure — has crumbled? And when you’re broadcasting into the void, who’s really listening? And does it matter?
The film follows Vinita (Kiran Deol), a sardonic, self-aware podcast host who delivers post-apocalyptic updates with the kind of detached irony that millennials perfected as a coping mechanism. She navigates a world where "biters" roam freely, and human connection is increasingly rare.

"You can keep losing after loss." - Hélène Cixous
Meera Menon's post-apocalyptic dramedy Didn't Die is a sincere indie about podcasting and zombies: a black-and-white love letter to George A. Romero's early works with a modern spin. Walkers aren't unleashed in a 28 Days Later or Dawn of the Dead 2004 way — you're not here for the bloodshed. Menon and co-writer Paul Gleason's delicate touches to undead storytelling parallel The Walking Dead episodes that focus on community over flesh-munching (be warned). Didn't Die fits into more mumblecore horror modes, and while Menon hits on comically mushy survival notes, there can be a dragging sensation beyond zombies' feet.
Kiran Deol stars as Vinita Malhotra, a successful Indian American podcast host. She returns from a cross-country road tour where she interviews other survivors of a subsided zombie outbreak. Said zombies are still alive, but they're only aggressive at night. Vinita...

Some tragedies you never move on from. Some losses are too personal. But everything ends, and everything begins again. That’s just the circle of life, and one of many things that Meera Menon’s “Didn’t Die” explores. It’s of course a post-apocalyptic zombie movie but, the horrors of living in a world infested by the living dead are less of a focus than our need for normalcy – our desperation to just set everything back to the way it was – dismissing the grief that weighs so heavily on us.
Sold as a homage to George A. Romero’s “Night of the Living Dead” with gorgeous black and white cinematography and high-framed green, stylized fonts, “Didn’t Die” follows Vinita (Kiran Deol) who runs the namesake podcast in a world that is now invested by ‘biters’ (a fancy name for zombies). Unlike most movies that feature the creatures, the world that...

While we were eager to tell you last year about Sundance premieres starring Kristen Stewart and Pedro Pascal, the unlikely “Thelma” became the true indie success story of 2024. Unexpected buyer Magnolia Pictures turned the June Squibb film into a hit, opening the doors for other buyers to take their own risks this year.
Heading into 2025, uniqueness is the name of the game, as is picking out the discovery that you won’t see coming, and not necessarily the movie with the big cast, commercial pedigree, or crowdpleaser premise. The Sundance Film Festival is once again upon us! Set to happen from January 23rd to February 2nd in Park City, Utah (with an online component from January 30th to Feb 2nd), the official schedule was unveiled today, and once again it’s an eclectic mix of indie fare, award hopefuls, and horror flicks. Once again, I’ll be there for JoBlo, filing a ton of reviews. To note, in recent years, Sundance has become especially well known for genre fare, with Hereditary, Talk to Me, and I Saw the TV Glow all premiering in the midnight section of the fest. This year’s Midnight selection includes some very buzzy titles:
Dead Lover / Canada –– A lonely gravedigger who stinks of corpses finally meets her dream man, but their whirlwind affair is cut short when he tragically drowns at sea. Grief-stricken, she goes to morbid lengths to resurrect him through madcap scientific experiments,...

Shaun of the Dead famously launched with the tagline “Zom, Rom, Com”, as in “zombies”, “romance” and “comedy”. It is fair to say, that is a tough combination to get right, and Shaun of the Dead naturally nailed it.
Werewolves Within takes these themes, adding a dash of small-town Americana charm and running with them. There is a healthy chunk of “Slither” (criminally overlooked) and a little bit of The Thing style paranoia, as a scientist gets drunk as a natural reaction to what her “science stuff” has told her about the recent, grizzly deaths. Our film kicks off, with our instantly lovable Finn (Sam Richardson) heading to a small town, “Beaverfield”, shortly before a blizzard hits, to start his new job as the park ranger.

IFC Film’s Werewolves Within saw the biggest debut in a weekend without many new limited releases.
Directed by Josh Ruben and written by Mishna Wolff, the comedy-horror flick stars Sam Richardson (Veep) and Milana Vayntrub. In the Ubisoft game-based film, a proposed pipeline creates divisions within the small town of Beaverfield and a snowstorm traps its wacky residents together inside the local inn. The newly arrived forest ranger Finn (Richardson) and postal worker Cecily (Vayntrub) must try to keep the peace and uncover the truth behind a mysterious creature that has begun terrorizing the community. George Basil, Sarah Burns, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtain, Wayne Duvall, Harvey Guillén, Rebecca Henderson, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins and Glenn Fleshler round out the cast.
Werewolves did well with critics and audience alike, garnering a 82% score on RottenTomatoes.com. Premiering at 270 locations, the feature grossed $223,000 and averaged $826 per screen, a decent feat in this...

The small town of Beaverfield is much like many others across the nation in 2021. There is political polarization, longtime residents suspicious of newcomers, a stark wealth gap, infidelity, gossip, and at least one guy who is either a scary loner or just wants to be left the hell alone. But in the new film Werewolves Within what really sets Beaverfield apart is their lycanthrope problem.

In my book, director Josh Ruben is two-for-two after his efforts on last year’s Scare Me and now with his follow-up film, the horror comedy/whodunnit Werewolves Within. Written by Mishna Wolff and based on the Ubisoft game, Werewolves Within is easily one of the most confidently crafted genre mash-ups to come along in years that delivers a ton of laughs, a compelling mystery, and an incredibly talented ensemble who all deliver an array of memorable and scene-stealing performances. I’m no psychic, but I do suspect that by the end of this year, many horror fans will be touting Werewolves Within amongst their favorite genre films of 2021.

Since Summertime is the movie season for both horror flicks and rowdy comedies, how about a new addition to the growing genre subsection that’s best known as (duh) the horror-comedy? Of course, it’s changed quite a bit since Hollywood’s Golden Age in which a popular comic actor, or team, would scurry away (usually in “undercranked” fast motion) from a billowing sheet or, often, a crook in a rubber “fright mask”. As monster flicks have become more gruesome and graphic, the “comic takes” have followed suit with the comic heroes frequently covered in gore and viscera by the final fade-out. This week’s new release harkens back to the older days as it involves a “new take’ on one of the classic monsters. But, it’s also based on a fairly recent video game, one that tosses in another element: mystery. In the tradition of Ten Little Indians,...

Arriving in theaters this weekend courtesy of IFC Films is Werewolves Within, the feature film adaptation of the Ubisoft game, which was written by Mishna Wolff (the most perfect last name for this project ever) and directed by Josh Ruben. A horror comedy whodunnit centered around a werewolf that’s terrorizing the picturesque mountain town of Beaverfield, Werewolves Within stars Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Harvey Guillén, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, Michael Chernus, Catherine Curtin, George Basil, Sarah Burns, Wayne Duvall, Rebecca Henderson, and Glenn Fleshler.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Wolff about her involvement with Werewolves Within, which first began when she joined Ubisoft’s fellowship program a few years back, and how that led to this project becoming a reality with Ruben at the helm. If not for a Ubisoft logo revealing the game company as a producer of Werewolves Within, I would be wondering what the point of buying licensing rights was since this adaptation isn’t even set in medieval times. I’m not sure there’s more that sets it apart from other variations on Mafia (the deduction party game created in 1986 by Dimitry Davidoff before getting a fresh spin as Werewolf by Andrew Plotkin in 1997 and more recently appropriated into the online sensation Among Us) since I’ve never played the VR title, but it appears anyone could just write a murder mystery populated by over-the-top paranoids without worrying about already existing IP. I guess if you already own that IP anyway, though, why not utilize it for cross-media synergy?

“Trespass and die,” reads an unneighborly sign glimpsed early in Josh Ruben’s agile, niftily directed whodunit “Werewolves Within.” While the placard specifically refers to some local’s private property, one could safely apply the warning to the whole snow-clad Vermont village that surrounds it. Welcome to Beaverfield, a sleepy town chock-full of secrets, lies and ideological disparities you should only enter at your own peril. But know that it’s a risk well worth taking, especially if Rian Johnson’s delectable caper “Knives Out” has recently scratched your itch for cozily inviting, steadily funny murder mysteries where the identity of the killer is anyone’s guess until the end.
Along with his crafty screenwriter Mishna Wolff, Ruben constructs a similarly snug and entertaining world, one filled with wood-heavy interiors illuminated by crackling fireplaces and golden lanterns, where a group of terrified, booze-chugging Beaverfield dwellers has to wait out a snowstorm,...

"Based on the popular video game... you've never heard of." IFC dropped a third trailer for Werewolves Within as a "Sneak Peek" preview during E3 this year. We've already featured two other trailers before this one, but this might be the best trailer yet. Described as a "Whodunnit with Teeth", it's an adaptation of the video game (a multiplayer VR game from 2016 that you've probably never played) where werewolves attack a small town. When a killer terrorizes the snowed-in residents of the town Beaverfield, it falls to the new forest ranger to find out who - or what - lurks among them. Ruben explains that "nothing scares me more than people..." And this is "an homage to my love for Hot Fuzz, the Coen Brothers, and Arachnophobia, it's also about the monster in all of us." Starring Sam Richardson, Milana Vayntrub, Cheyenne Jackson, Michaela Watkins, Harvey Guillen, Michael Chernus, Sarah Burns,...

Playing off the game, the movie revolves around the shenanigans that ensue when a massive blizzard isolates a small Vermont town, causing simmering resentments to boil over as the oddball townspeople are one by one picked off by a mysterious creature.
