Two years ago, we heard that Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) would be starring in The Leader, a true crime biopic about a story that shocked the world back in 1997, the mass suicide of the members of the Heaven’s Gate cult. That project has finally made it into production, and Deadline reports that Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) has joined the cast. Details on the character he’ll be playing haven’t been revealed – but it’s not difficult to imagine him playing a member of the Heaven’s Gate cult.

Exclusive: Cleopatra Entertainment, the film division of Cleopatra Records, founded by Brian Perera, has joined forces with Sandaled Kid Productions, led by director James Cullen Bressack, to finance, produce, and distribute a slate of 12 micro-budget feature-length genre films.

Cleopatra Entertainment will provide full financing for the twelve features, while Sandaled Kid Productions will curate the slate and oversee production. The first film in the slate is said to be in pre-production and will be announced soon.

Sandaled Kid Productions was founded in 2020 by James Cullen Bressack, whose credits include Darkness Of Man, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Hot Seat (pictured), featuring Mel Gibson and Kevin Dillon, and Fortress, starring Bruce Willis.

Review: It’s nothing new for an action star of the past to show up in these lower-budget films. Geezer Teasers have often been a great way for action stars to cash a quick paycheck. Now Screen Daily reports that Vmi Worldwide is presenting Death Rider in the House of Vampires to potential distributors at the Cannes Film Market – so if deals are secured there, more of us will have a chance to see the movie soon.

Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired the prison break action film “Breakout,” which features the late Tom Sizemore in one his final roles. The film is set to release in April. Watch the trailer above.

The thriller is about a criminal mastermind and former LAPD explosives expert that has taken over a a maximum-security California prison with other prisoners joining his side. They go head-to-head with rogue hostage negotiator and a retired Black Ops agent who happens to have been visiting his incarcerated son.

In the trailer, which you can see above, Sizemore plays a detective, standing next to other law enforcement officers with the guns drawn. Meanwhile, we see there’s a subplot about a son seeking some kind of redemption amid the chaos. Drama!

Action films of all types and budgets are coming out left and right. With all the streaming services, direct-to-vod, and smaller theater runs, films that may not even have gotten greenlit at all years ago are making it to our eyeballs fairly easily. Darkness of Man (2023)

The new Jean-Claude Van Damme flick just wrapped and should be coming out later this year. It’s being labelled as a neo-noir action thriller. Spencer Breslin, Stacey Dash and Taryn Manning are set to star in “Four,” a feature adaptation of Ashley Berry’s memoir “Waiting for Rainbows.”

Meghan Carrasquillo (“What Lies Behind the Walls”) will star in the film as Berry, a woman struggling with infertility who eventually turns to adoption.

Breslin (“The Santa Clause 3”) will play Berry’s husband Cal while Dash (“Clueless”) will play social worker Beth. Manning (“Orange is the New Black”) stars as Dr. Brice.

“A small-town couple with big dreams of making their family complete must persevere through infertility and tragedy,” reads the longline. “Hope and fear may come and go, but with love as their rock, they vow to withstand the storm… together.”

The film adaptation has been retitled “Four.”

Andrey Ivchenko, the Ukrainian actor probably best recognized for his role as Russian hit man Grigori in the third season of Stranger Things, is set to star alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in the neo-noir action film Darkness of Man.

The L.A.-set film — first announced at the American Film Market in November, where it was introduced to buyers by Vmi Worldwide — comes from director James Cullen Bressack, who co-wrote the script with Alethea Cho from an original story he devised alongside Van Damme. Bressack also produces alongside Jarrett Furst.

Darkness of Man sees Van Damme play Hatch, an Interpol operative who must protect the son of a murdered informant from a group of merciless gangs. Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired director James Cullen Bressack’s well-received horror-comedy, “Murder, Anyone?” based on the play of the same name by Bressack’s father, Emmy-award winner Gordon Bressack.

The film will be released in early 2023.

“Murder, Anyone?” explores the concept of manifestation, and stars Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”), Galadriel Stineman (“The Middle”), Maurice Lamarche (“Pinky and the Brain”), Spencer Breslin, and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.

The story follows playwrights George and Charlie, tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.” Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time — but their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is set to flex his more dramatic muscles in upcoming neo-noir action film Darkness of Man.

The feature — being introduced to buyers at the American Film Market by Vmi Worldwide — comes from director James Cullen Bressack and has been likened to the grittier titles in Van Damme’s impressive library, such as Jcvd and The Bouncer.

No stranger to action stars, having worked with Bruce Willis (Fortress), Mel Gibson (Hot Seat), and Steven Seagal (Beyond the Law), Bressack co-wrote the script with Alethea Cho from an original story he devised alongside Van Damme. Bressack also produces alongside Jarrett Furst.
