Tim Blake Nelson at an event for Leaves of Grass (2009)
Two years ago, we heard that Tim Blake Nelson and Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring) would be starring in The Leader, a true crime biopic about a story that shocked the world back in 1997, the mass suicide of the members of the Heaven’s Gate cult. That project has finally made it into production, and Deadline reports that Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) has joined the cast. Details on the character he’ll be playing haven’t been revealed – but it’s not difficult to imagine him playing a member of the Heaven’s Gate cult.

Farmiga is playing cult leader Bonnie Nettles, a.k.a. Ti. Nelson’s character is the cult’s infamous frontman, Marshall Applewhite, a.k.a. Do. Also in the cast are Simon Rex (Red Rocket), Grace Caroline Currey (Fall), Matthew Glave (The Wedding Singer), William Mapother (In the Bedroom), Jb Yowell (A Jar Full of Christmas...

Mel Gibson’s 11% Rotten Tomatoes Cyber Thriller Is Making a Shocking Run on Free Streaming Charts
Image
One of Mel Gibson’s more recent movies that flew under the radar has become a surprising hit on streaming. Gibson stars alongside the late Shannen Doherty in Hot Seat, the 2022 cyber thriller following an ex-hacker who is forced to break into a high-level bank and another man who breaks into the bank to save and stop him. Despite an extremely limited theatrical run that saw the film earn less than $100,000 at the global box office, Hot Seat has become one of the more popular movies of the week on Freevee, sitting at #4 at the time of writing. Hot Seat was Mel Gibson’s first movie after Father Stu, the 2022 biopic starring Mark Wahlberg that’s streaming on both Hulu and Max.

Collin Watts and Leon Langford wrote the script for Hot Seat, and James Cullen Bressack directed the film. Hot Seat was Langford’s first major writing gig, and...

Mel Gibson Action Thriller 'Hot Seat' Finds Success on Free Streaming
Image
Oscar-winner and controversial Hollywood star Mel Gibson remains popular with audiences, as the Braveheart and Lethal Weapon actor’s severely panned 2022 action thriller dominates free streaming. Gibson, who remains a polarizing figure following issues with alcohol and a series of controversies, including well-publicized antisemitic tirades, homophobic comments, and a domestic violence-related restraining order, was recently appointed a "Special Ambassador" for Hollywood by President Donald Trump. And, clearly, audiences still find Gibson a magnetic screen presence...especially when it's free.

Directed and produced by James Cullen Bressack, and starring Kevin Dillon, Shannen Doherty, and Michael Welch alongside Gibson, the action thriller Hot Seat is now #1 on free streaming platform Freevee, with audiences loving this tale of an anonymous criminal who plants a bomb under the chair of an ex-hacker, forcing him to break into several high-level banking institutions. You can check out the official synopsis for Hot Seat below.

Mel Gibson's 'Hot Seat' Is Now Streaming on Freevee
Image
Mel Gibson's position in Hollywood is precarious to say the least, but that has not stopped his 2022 action thriller Hot Seat from jumping into the Freevee Top 10 after it was added to the platform earlier this month. Directed by James Cullen Bressack and starring Gibson alongside Kevin Dillon, the film was met with harsh reviews upon release, which makes its new-found success on streaming unexpected…but at the same time completely on trend for free streaming releases.

Hot Seat is a high-stakes hostage thriller, which centers on It expert Orlando Friar (Dillon) who becomes an unwitting pawn in a dangerous cyber-heist. Forced to hack into government servers while trapped in a booby-trapped office chair rigged to explode (of course he is), Friar must race against the clock to outsmart the anonymous mastermind holding his life—and the city—hostage. Gibson appears as Wallace Reed, a bomb squad veteran determined...

Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hard Target (1993)
Darkness of Man (2024) Ending Explained: Does Russell Find Jayden?
Jean-Claude Van Damme in Hard Target (1993)
Jean-Claude Van Damme steps back into familiar territory with Darkness of Man (2024), a standard-issue revenge thriller set against the gritty backdrop of drug cartels and a young runaway. In this outing, Van Damme plays Russell, a weathered special agent burdened by a haunting promise to a dying informant: to protect her son at all costs. Directed by James Cullen Bressack, the film leans heavily on Van Damme’s brooding presence, amplified by a narration-heavy performance that feels like a budget nod to Rorschach from Watchmen.

While the voiceovers aim to add depth, they often come across as overdone, blending with the film’s shadowy visuals to create an atmosphere of well-worn clichés. That said, Darkness of Man isn’t without its merits—occasional twists break up the otherwise predictable plot, offering glimmers of intrigue. Still, it’s a largely forgettable affair, relying more on nostalgia for Van Damme’s action-hero heyday than fresh storytelling.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Action Thriller ‘Darkness of Man’ is Streaming on Netflix December 20 Underrated 2024 Gritty Action Thriller Comes to Streaming This Week
Image
Jean-Claude Van Damme steps into another intense and gritty action role as his new thriller Darkness of Man blasts its way onto Netflix on December 20. The James Cullen Bressack-directed movie provides Van Damme fans with his usual hard-hitting, raw action-driven storyline, but also sees the ever-popular tough guy playing a character with a little more emotional depth than in many of his biggest movies. While now very much in his twilight years as an action hero, Van Damme surprisingly delivers a movie that sits higher than many of his recent offerings.

In Darkness of Man, Van Damme plays Russell Hatch, a former Interpol agent whose life takes a tragic turn when his partner is killed during a dangerous operation in Los Angeles. Taking on the task of protecting her son, Jayden (who is played by Van Damme’s real-life son), Hatch is pulled into a violent world of crime syndicates and shadowy gangs.

Darkness of Man Review
Image
Plot: Russell Hatch an Interpol operative who takes on the role of father figure to Jayden, the son of an informant killed in a routine raid gone wrong.

Review: It’s nothing new for an action star of the past to show up in these lower-budget films. Geezer Teasers have often been a great way for action stars to cash a quick paycheck. But they tend to amount to nothing more than a bit part, while some younger actor does the majority of the action. So I was pleasantly surprised to see Jean-Claude Van Damme not only take center stage but appear in nearly every frame of Darkness of Man. Unlike some of his contemporaries, he’s not taking the easy way out and I respect him for it.

Darkness of Man is structured like a film noir, complete with intense narration from Van Damme. We’re mostly following his character Russell Hatch,...

‘Darkness of Man’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chika Kanamoto, Emerson Min, Sticky Fingaz, Ji Yong Lee, Andrey Ivchenko, Kristanna Loken, Shannen Doherty, Cynthia Rothrock, Weston Cage, Kris Van Damme | Written by James Cullen Bressack, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Alethea Hnatko-Cho | Directed by James Cullen Bressack

Jean-Claude Van Damme has kept a fairly low profile compared to many other 80s action heroes. And that includes such non-genre appearances as voice acting in kids films like Kung Fu Panda 2 and 3, Minions: The Rise of Gru as well as a cameo in the French comedy Haters. However, Darkness of Man sees him return to the Dtv action spotlight

As the film opens, Russel Hatch lies in a puddle of his own blood, bleeding out from several bullet wounds. He tells us in voice-over that, like every story, this began with a woman. And we go back to Miami two years prior when Hatch was an Interpol agent.

Van Damme believes that if a fight with Seagal happened, he would run faster and tire Seagal out before coming back to fight. Image
Nearly two years have gone by since we heard anything about Death Rider in the House of Vampires, the second feature directorial effort from musician Glenn Danzig (following the infamous 2019 horror anthology Verotika – watch it Here). At that time, the film was receiving a 200+ screen theatrical release in the United States… but after that theatrical run, the movie disappears. Now Screen Daily reports that Vmi Worldwide is presenting Death Rider in the House of Vampires to potential distributors at the Cannes Film Market – so if deals are secured there, more of us will have a chance to see the movie soon.

Scripted by Danzig, who also composed the score, Death Rider in the House of Vampires is a Spaghetti Western where every single character is a vampire. Directed by James Cullen Bressack, the L.A.-set feature — news of which was first unveiled by The Hollywood Reporter at the American Film Market in 2022 — sees the Jean-Claude Van Damme, the Muscles from Brussels, play an out-of-shape (well, for him) Interpol agent alongside a cast that includes Kristanna Loken, Emerson Min, Sticky Fingaz, Spencer Breslin, Andrey Ivchenko, Peter Jae and Nick Diaz.

Production has now wrapped on the film, which was written by Alethea Cho and Bressack from an original story devised by Bressack and Van Damme.

In Darkness of Man Van Damme portrays Russell Hatch, an Interpol operative who witnesses the death of his last informant in a routine raid gone wrong. Years later Hatch takes on a father figure role to the son of the informant, Jayden (Min). Set against the backdrop of Los Angeles,...

‘Stranger Things’ Villain Andrey Ivchenko to Star Alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in ‘Darkness of Man’ (Exclusive)
Image
Andrey Ivchenko, the Ukrainian actor probably best recognized for his role as Russian hit man Grigori in the third season of Stranger Things, is set to star alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in the neo-noir action film Darkness of Man.

The L.A.-set film — first announced at the American Film Market in November, where it was introduced to buyers by Vmi Worldwide — comes from director James Cullen Bressack, who co-wrote the script with Alethea Cho from an original story he devised alongside Van Damme. Bressack also produces alongside Jarrett Furst.

Darkness of Man sees Van Damme play Hatch, an Interpol operative who must protect the son of a murdered informant from a group of merciless gangs. The Hollywood Reporter understands that Ivchenko, also known for xXx: Return of Xander Cage, is set to star as the head of the Russian mob and a ruthless, smart and calculated businessman who has been crossed by Hatch,...

James Cullen Bressack’s ‘Murder, Anyone?’ Acquired by Uncork’d Entertainment (Exclusive)
James Cullen Bressack
Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired director James Cullen Bressack’s well-received horror-comedy, “Murder, Anyone?” based on the play of the same name by Bressack’s father, Emmy-award winner Gordon Bressack.

The film will be released in early 2023.

“Murder, Anyone?” explores the concept of manifestation, and stars Kristos Andrews (“The Bay”), Galadriel Stineman (“The Middle”), Maurice Lamarche (“Pinky and the Brain”), Spencer Breslin, and Oscar nominee Sally Kirkland.

The story follows playwrights George and Charlie, tasked with the challenge of creating the next “avant-garde, surrealistic, mind-bending neo-noire thriller.” Unfortunately, as they write, the story comes to life in real time — but their own emotions and arguments also begin to manifest on film, creating sharp twists and turns and filling their life with hilarity — and chaos.

AFM: Jean-Claude Van Damme on His New Passion Project and Why He Won’t Be Retiring Anytime Soon (Exclusive)
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Of all the action heroes merrily kicking the asses of bad guys in the late ’80s and early ’90s, in terms of actual fighting prowess, few came close to Jean-Claude Van Damme, a karate and kickboxing champion who turned his phenomenal martial arts skills — including a particularly impressive spin-kick — into, for a while, back-to-back box office gold.

First propelled into the action arena thanks to Cannon Films’ 1988 low-budget smash Bloodsport, Van Damme quickly cemented his iconic status as the Muscles From Brussels thanks to 1989’s iconic Kickboxer, then starred as warring twins in 1991’s Double Impact, began a long-running onscreen feud with Dolph Lundgren in Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi 1992 hit Universal Soldier, led John Woo’s U.S. debut Hard Target in 1993 and donned Guile’s beret in 1994’s Street Fighter video game adaptation. Like many ultra-ripped stars of the time, however, the...

‘Frost’ Review
Image
Stars: Vernon Wells, Devanny Pinn | Written by Robert Thompson | Directed by Brandon Slagle

Frost begins with a reunion between Grant and Abbey the daughter he hasn’t spoken to in five years. She’s about to become a mother and wants her child to be able to have a relationship with its grandfather. After a rather guarded start, they find common ground over memories of her late mother and start bonding.

The next day they decide to further revisit the old days with a father-daughter fishing trip. This is where the film shifts from a domestic drama to a survival thriller as their car skids off the road. Grant is able to get free but Abbey is trapped in her seat. With a severe snowstorm on the way, Grant has no choice but to leave her and try to find help.

Working from a story by James Cullen Bressack, writer...

‘Of the Devil’ Review
Image
Stars: Lucas Sequeira, Jonathan Stoddard, Daniela Palavecino, Eileen Dietz, Robert Lasardo, Roslyn Gentle, Vernon Wells, Devanny Pinn, Vicki Gunvalson | Written and Directed by Kelton Jones

Of the Devil sees actor Kelton Jones return to the directors’ chair five years after helming his disturbing first feature, Dry Blood. This time around he’s working from a script he wrote based on an idea by James Cullen Bressack.

The film opens in the basement of a nightclub. A group of devil worshippers slice open a young woman and remove something that looks like a shark’s tooth-shaped cocoon from her body. In the next scene, the item is hidden in the corner of a fence. A bright blue butterfly of the species “CGIus Obvious” flutters around it and a young boy named Alex (Lucas Sequeira; In the Death Room) is playing on the other side of the fence.

The butterfly lands on the boy’s finger,...

Mel Gibson at an event for Edge of Darkness (2010)
Hot Seat review – call centre guy is pinned down in office chair in schlocky thriller
Mel Gibson at an event for Edge of Darkness (2010)
Office equipment turns deadly after a bomb-maker targets a reformed hacker at work. Can Mel Gibson and a D-list cast save him from server-room peril?

Kevin Dillon heads a mostly D-, E- and F-list cast in this schlocky but not entirely unwatchable thriller; he plays Orlando Friar, a one-time hacker who’s gone straight and works for a computer helpline. One sunny day in southern California, Orlando makes excuses as to why he can’t stay at home and attend the birthday party of his teenage daughter Zoey (Anna Harr), citing work demands. His wife Kim (Lydia Hull) is so fed up with his perpetual absence, she hands him divorce papers. But off to work he goes nevertheless, where he is soon punished for his lack of paternal commitment when he discovers that an unseen bomb-maker, at first just a voice on the phone, has set a trap for him at work.

‘Hot Seat’ Review
Image
Stars: Kevin Dillon, Anna Harr, Lydia Hull, Mel Gibson, Eddie Steeples, Shannen Doherty, Sam Asghari | Written by Collin Watts, Leon Langford | Directed by James Cullen Bressack

Hot Seat, is the new thriller from director James Cullen Bressack, working from a script by Collin Watts and Leon Langford. And, at least on the surface, it seems to have taken its cue from his other recent thriller, Fortress, one of whose plot threads involved a former hacker forced to break into a financial company’s systems.

Here, that goes from subplot to the main storyline as reformed hacker Orlando Friar’s day goes from bad to worse. After he’s called in on his day off, which also happens to be his daughter Zoey’s birthday his wife Kim serves him with divorce papers. But the worst is yet to come. Almost as soon as he gets to work his computer is...
