Image
A prolific genre trailblazing the most imaginative visions of the future, science fiction is a beloved staple of speculative fiction that deals with all sorts of compelling concepts of advancement — from technological wonders to time travel to extraterrestrial life. Anime and sci-fi go way back, the genre being one of the medium's most bountiful in terms of producing cult classics.

Some of anime's most influential titles — Akira, Serial Experiments Lain, Mobile Suit Gundam — speculate about cutting-edge science and futuristic worlds. However, sci-fi in anime is not simply defined by its glorious past; just as enterprising as the ideas it proposes, science fiction continues to blossom in modern anime, with some of the genre's best works being released over the last decade. Taking the viewers on exhilarating adventures through fiction's most imaginative worlds, these modern sci-fi anime are a testament to the genre's timeless appeal.

10 Underrated Anime Series That Seriously Deserve a Second Chance From Fans
Image
There's almost too much anime out there. It's a great problem to have for an anime-lover, as there's no shortage of series in any genre for fans to watch. If there is a downside to the incredible amount of animation out there, it's that some shows fly under the radar for way too long. While series like Dragon Ball, One Piece, and Attack on Titan get an incredible amount of views thanks to their quality and popularity, there are a ton of underrated anime series that deserve a lot more attention than they get.

While most series don't stack up to the three mentioned above, they're still excellent in what they try to achieve. It doesn't matter if they're a romance series, shōnen, or something a little edgier - some series just didn't get the views that they probably could have.

Eric Vale, Trina Nishimura, Justin Briner, Felecia Angelle, Bryn Apprill, and Kristi Rothrock in Classroom of the Elite (2017)
Anime Review: Classroom of the Elite Season 1 (2017) by Seiji Kishi and Hiroyuki Hashimoto
Eric Vale, Trina Nishimura, Justin Briner, Felecia Angelle, Bryn Apprill, and Kristi Rothrock in Classroom of the Elite (2017)
We have all wondered at least once whether human beings are equal. And we all talk about this topic in various contexts: in political debates, at school with teachers and classmates, among friends, in the family, etc. The writer Shogo Kinugasa‘s answer is no: being human means being unequal, and despite the fact that society strives against inequalities, equality doesn’t exist. But that’s not all: according to Kinugasa, the educational system creates imbalance and social differences, and so he dedicates the light novel “Classroom of the Elite”, illustrated by Tomose Shunsaku, to explaining whether and how it is possible to be part of a society that doesn’t accept inequality and fights against discrimination. This is the origin of the anime adaptation “Classroom of the Elite.” The unprecedented couple Seiji Kishi and Hiroyuki Hashimoto successfully co-directed the first series, and this year the production of the fourth...

10 Best Isekai Anime Like KonoSuba
Image
KonoSuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! is the funniest isekai series of all time. It features one of the most frustratingly lovable cast of characters, a world filled with mystery, and some of the best writing in anime, all genres included. When Satou Kazuma is transported to his new world, he's allowed to bring any one thing with him. When the Goddess Aqua laughs at him during this process, he decides to take her instead, creating a hilarious dynamic within the first episode.

To be a great show like KonoSuba, an isekai series needs to have some element of humor. It also needs to have good animation, and at least decent writing. While no show can truly compare with KonoSuba's outrageous humor, some can get close. Still, there are plenty of isekai series out there that are great for anyone who loves watching Kazuma, Darkness, Aqua, and Megumin bumble their way to success.

10 Best Isekai Anime Like Overlord
Image
Overlord is a popular isekai series that marries brutality and humor to create a hilarious show that's not afraid of exploring darker themes. The star at the center of the series is Ainz Ooal Gown. He's left alone in the video game Yggdrasil, but before he was trapped, he was one of the strongest characters in the game. Now he's alone with only his NPCs to keep him company. After discovering his new situation, he set out to dominate the entire world in the hopes that he could find another person like him.

To be a good Overlord isekai comparison, a show doesn't need to be as dark and funny as Overlord, but it certainly doesn't hurt. The best shows like Overlord will have smart companions to guide the main character, an interesting world filled with the promise of adventure, and a broken protagonist with powers so absurd, they stand...

10 Best Anime Like Mushoku Tensei
Image
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation is one of the best isekai series of all time. It features one of the biggest and richest worlds in isekai, great, well-rounded characters, and an incredibly divisive main character in Rudeus Greyrat. The story of Mushoku Tensei spans Rudy's entire life, starting with his reincarnation into the new world as a baby and leaving no stone unturned. Rudeus begins the story as a baby, eventually goes to magic college, and even begins a family of his own. While not many other animes are like it, there are a few that could be considered worthy comparisons.

To be a good Mushoku Tensei comparison, a show doesn't need to be an isekai, but it doesn't hurt. The biggest qualities a series in common with Mushoku Tensei would have would be its thorough worldbuilding, a great cast of side characters, and a deep, meaningful story that doesn't leave...

'Broken in a Good Way': Creators Behind Summer 2024's Weirdest Anime Break Down the Series' Comedy
Image
The creators of the popular manga series My Deer Friend Nokotan break down the series' absurdist comedy in a new interview following the anime's debut -- one of the most highly anticipated series of the Summer 2024 season.

My Deer Friend Nokotan manga creator Oshioshio and editor Igarashi broke down the series' wackiness, aspirations and more in an interview with Comic Natalie. Igarashi said the decision to make the now-viral anime adaptation came soon after the first volume was released, with Oshioshio finding out after the second volume. The pair frequently joked throughout the interview; Oshioshio had told Wit Studio, which animates the series, "I don't want it to be mild. If you're going to do that anyway, make it terrible." Furthermore, the idea for the popular anime opening, "Shikanoko Nokonoko Koshitantan," was apparently conceived in "about three seconds" by the PR team. Readers can check out the full opening below.

Classroom of the Elite Season 3: Plot, Cast, Release Date, and Everything Else We Know
Image
Classroom of the Elite is a one-of-a-kind anime that provides a realistic approach to the high school survival genre, which many shows have tackled previously but haven't been successful enough. For instance, while anime shows like Danganronpa, School-Live!, and Highschool of the Dead take place in a high school, they lack the unique element that the Classroom of the Elite possesses.

Having said that, even though Classroom of the Elite was adapted with the intention of selling its light novels, it was well-received by fans, becoming one of the best survival anime shows. While everyone assumed there wouldn't be a sequel after a phenomenal first season, it returned in 2022, announcing yet another season to keep fans entertained. With that in mind, here's everything we know about Classroom of the Elite season 3.
