Relay (2024) Movie Review: A Slick, Entertaining Conspiracy Thriller That Goes Off The Rails
Image
“Relay” is an accomplished conspiracy thriller that echoes “New Hollywood” classics like “Three Days of the Condor” or “The Parallax View,” as it’s an examination of a whistleblower’s attempts to survive an all-powerful system. The difference between the 1970s and 21st century is that now corporations and businesses are just as influential as governments; in fact, the secrecy involved in an employer-lead manhunt is more terrifying than legal persecution, as a private company does not have to abide by the rules of the judiciary. While “Relay” makes a fatal mistake in its final act that invalidates much of the worldbuilding that it had already established, it’s still a worthwhile watch that serves as a compelling revamp of a quintessential subgenre.

Riz Ahmed stars as Ash, a “fixer” for a powerful corporation who helps form secret arrangements on its behalf. After being assigned to extract pertinent information from...

The 7 Best Hidden Gems on Netflix in August
Image
Netflix has so finely tuned its production pipeline over the years that the streamer has gotten into the routine of adding new TV and film originals to its platform every week. It has, consequently, become increasingly common for certain movies and shows to fall through the cracks of Netflix’s content library. Some of the hidden gems streaming on Netflix right now include Adam Sandler‘s most underrated ’90s comedy, a disappointingly unloved British romance and an Indonesian action movie that cuts like a recently sharpened samurai sword.

Here are the seven best hidden gems streaming on Netflix in August.

“Big Daddy” (Sony Pictures Releasing) “Big Daddy” (1999)

“Big Daddy” is the film that taught an entire generation that McDonald’s transitions from breakfast to lunch at 10:30 a.m. — and not a minute later than that. It is also the most underrated of star Adam Sandler’s beloved 1990s comedies. He...

How Pamela Anderson Feels About Hulu's Pam & Tommy Miniseries
Image
There was a time in the 1990s when Pamela Anderson was one of the most famous people on the face of the planet. Thanks to her breakout role on "Baywatch" and her brief but memorable time on the hit sitcom "Home Improvement," Anderson shot to fame like a rocket, even reaching true global superstardom levels when she married rock drummer Tommy Lee of Motley Crue fame. That whole saga, and the infamous leaked sex tape that followed, was previously documented in the 2022 Hulu miniseries "Pam & Tommy," which was met with a great deal of acclaim. So, what does Anderson think of the show?

In a recent "Andy Cohen Live" interview to promote her role in the "Naked Gun" reboot, Anderson touched on the series. Put simply, she wasn't a fan. "I didn't have any involvement. No one called me." Anderson explained, adding that it was "hurtful." When Cohen asked...

Shoshana Review — No Spark, No Fire, and a Romance Without Heat Derails Michael Winterbottom’s Period Drama
Image
Shoshana is a gripping, though somewhat limited, film about the British Mandate in Palestine. Directed by Michael Winterbottom, it admirably attempts to parse the complexities of both sides by presenting the conflict through the eyes of the British rulers. However, that perspective risks reducing a weighty historical subject into a genre exercise that lacks nuance.

The film is based on a true story, drawn from the real-life events surrounding a key figure in the Hebrew underground. So why does the titular character of Shoshana take a backseat? The story would have resonated more deeply if it had been told through Shoshana’s perspective, rather than filtered through a British lens.

Remake Of Sylvester Stallone's $255M Action Classic Reflected On By Og Director: "It's Not An Easy Task"
Image
At San Diego Comic-Con, the original Cliffhangerdirector comments on the remake being made. Released in 1993, the original film was a mountain adventure movie starring Sylvester Stallone as Gabe Walker, a former mountain rescuer who has to take on another mission to rescue a group of plane crash survivors in the Rocky Mountains.

Now, a new version of Cliffhanger is being made by Jaume Collet-Serra. The film follows the same general plot, but substitutes Stallone for Lily James. Also starring in the movie are Pierce Brosnan, Nell Tiger Free, and Bruno Gouery. The movie is set for release on April 3, 2026.

In an interview with ScreenRant at Sdcc, original Cliffhanger director Renny Harlin comments on the remake. He clearly wished the reboot's team the best, saying that he "wish[es] them luck" and hopes "that they're going to do great." However, he did say that it was "not an easy task," in a...

Finally Dawn Review — Lily James and Willem Dafoe Star in a Sprawling, Absorbing Drama
Image
Finally Dawn (Finalmente l’alba) is a soulful Italian period drama written and directed by Saverio Costanzo. While far from perfect, the film is genuinely immersive in its ability to transport viewers to another time and place. Set during the 1950s and 1960s—an era when Hollywood productions flocked to Rome.

This period saw major American stars, including Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck, and Audrey Hepburn, headline films such as Ben-Hur (1959), Roman Holiday (1953), Cleopatra (1963), and Quo Vadis (1951). The result was a cinematic fusion of classic Roman backdrops and American glamour that remains iconic to this day.

Finally Dawn uses this rich setting as a backdrop to tell an absorbing story that unfolds like a sprawling novel, full of twists, turns, and layered subplots. While it can feel convoluted at times, the narrative ultimately finds its way and proves cinematically satisfying.

Sylvester Stallone’s First Remake Replaces Him With Female Lead After Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Running Man
Image
Sylvester Stallone, who starred in action movies back in the 1980s, ’90s, and the present as well, is a Hollywood icon. Known for his rivalry with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Stallone’s movies (much like Arnold Schwarzenegger) are finally getting a remake.

The twist in the tale is that although Cliffhanger starred Stallone in the lead role in 1993, the remake will replace him with a female star. According to Screenrant, the upcoming remake will be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra with Lily James and Pierce Brosnan in leading roles.

As Hollywood runs dry on original movies and the new generation takes an interest in the older movies, remakes are inevitable. Hollywood has already started this trend with Arnold Schwarzenegger as The Running Man, and recently got a remake starring Glen Powell in the lead role.

However, Cliffhanger is officially the first remake of a Sylvester Stallone action film, and it probably won’t be the last.

Jennifer Lopez Is Developing a Cinderella Musical Series With a Magical Twist for Disney+

Over the years, Cinderella has had many adaptations. The folk story of a young girl living in unfortunate circumstances and blessed with a life-changing decision after marrying has been around for centuries, although it's mostly famous thanks to the Disney adaptation.

Cinderella was adapted into opera, theater, musicals, films, and TV. Walt Disney entered the conversation in 1950, giving the character, who is now considered one of the Disney Princesses, her first adaptation. Jennifer Lopez has been interested in a new version of the story for years, and she is now partnering with Disney+ for a new version, Deadline reports.

Lopez has been attached to the limited series based on Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella since May 2022. The singer and actress' production company, Nuyorican Productions, was working with Skydance Television and Concord Originals. Finally Dawn Movie Ending Explained And Full Story: Is Mimosa Dead Or Alive?
Image
Saverio Costanzo’s stunning-looking period drama, Finally Dawn, may look like a straightforward film on the surface, but quite a lot is going under the hood. The bizarre ending scene, in particular, is bound to leave some of you baffled. Although the lion – which may or may not be real, we’re gonna get to that, in a while – didn’t just abruptly appear outside of the plaza hotel, if you think about it. While that I thought to be audacious and praiseworthy, where the film falters is when it comes to having a proper narrative focus. It is also a bit too long for its own good, which implies the editing has not been up to the mark. Anyway, the point of this article is mainly to explain the ending. But before that, let us talk a bit about the setup and the story.

Finally Dawn Review: A Fever Dream in the Heart of Rome
Image
In the Rome of the 1950s, a city rebuilding its soul with celluloid and light, the Cinecittà studio stands as a modern pantheon. It is a factory for gods, a place where reality is a raw material to be sculpted into grand, flickering illusions. Saverio Costanzo’s Finally Dawn plunges us into this dream-machine, but it offers no simple tale of stardom.

Instead, it follows Mimosa (Rebecca Antonaci), a young woman so plain she is almost translucent, a ghost haunting the edges of her own life. Chaperoning her sister to an audition, she is the one who is inexplicably chosen, pulled from the mundane world into the orbit of a colossal sword-and-sandals epic. Her passage is not an ascent.

It is a fall through the looking glass into a surreal, night-long odyssey, a disorienting trip into an underworld where every face is a mask and the self is a fragile concept,...

Sylvester Stallone was a truly iconic action star in his heyday, contributing his talents to everything from Rocky to Rambo. While he has some critical hits, he is not always known for making the best-quality movies. But he nearly always makes films that give audiences a good time.

In the 21st century, Stallone's career has been defined by series like The Expendables movies. On the more consistently well-received side, he also acts in the show Tulsa King. In the past couple of years, development has started on a reboot of one of Stallone's more iconic works. He is so distinctive that it will be hard for any actor to follow him, but the film's lead actor speaks to what attempt it will make to live up to the original.

This actor played the role of Sirius Black, the titular prisoner, and Harry Potter’s godfather. Yes, you got that right – we’re talking about none other than Gary Oldman.

Over the years, Gary Oldman has delivered spellbinding performances in films and series like The Contender, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Mank, and Slow Horses, to name a few. But the only role (so far) that earned him the Best Actor Oscar is his portrayal of former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the critically acclaimed WWII drama Darkest Hour.

It was so hard. I did five hours of climbing a day for many weeks."I was on mountains nonstop. I fell completely in love with it. It’s the most mind-body-soul activity. "And I’m a [mountain-climbing] addict now. I did all my own climbing [in the film], and I got real strong. I was just pounding press-ups between every take."The film is due for release next year and Lily can't wait to share it with audiences. She added:...

Lily James Previews Her Upcoming Film Slate of ‘Finally Dawn,’ ‘Relay’ and ‘Cliffhanger’
Image
Lily James’ upcoming slate of films are throwbacks in uniquely different ways.

Beginning with Saverio Costanzo’s 1950s-set Italian drama Finally Dawn, James plays Josephine Esperanto, an Elizabeth Taylor-type movie star who ropes a rejected background artist (Rebecca Antonaci’s Mimosa) into a pivotal scene of her sword-and-sandals epic. From there, Josephine, her co-star Sean Lockwood (Joe Keery) and her jack-of-all trades, Rufo Priori (Willem Dafoe), pressure Mimosa into exploring Rome’s nightlife with them.

While en route to one of their two destinations, Sean Lockwood’s acting insecurities get the better of him, and Josephine makes a half-hearted attempt to compliment their scene work that day. According to James, it’s a highly relatable scene for most actors.

“At their worst, actors are an insecure bunch of self-obsessed, needy humans. Actors and artists are often called upon to be very vulnerable…so it can trigger some serious insecurity and a need for validation,...

Carrie Coon Talks Emmy Nomination, Future Of ‘The Gilded Age’ & Whether She’d Return For ‘The White Lotus’ Season 4
Image
How’s Carrie Coon celebrating her third Emmy nomination — this time for her turn in Season 3 of Mike White’s The White Lotus — you ask?

“I’m working, which, again, is the best way to celebrate,” she told Deadline in an interview this morning. “I’m in Vancouver doing an independent film. I’m here with my whole family, so it’s very chaotic. The days are long, and it’s the kind of good, hard, fulfilling work I’ve been lucky to do. I’m very fortunate to be working right now.”

The actress — who previously scored noms for FX’s Fargo and HBO Max’s The Gilded Age, which is currently halfway through airing its third season — is in production for Harmonia, Guy Nattiv’s thriller that also stars Odessa Young, Lily James and Bella Ramsey, an HBO compatriot of Coon’s who scored a historic second Emmy...

Image
After a successful festival run, Finally Dawn is finally coming to theaters and digital this week. For an early taste, Collider has a new, exclusive clip of the Italy-set period drama, starring Lily James as an American actress adrift in 1950s Rome. The film follows a number of characters over the course of a long night and was partially inspired by a notorious decades-old mystery. Finally Dawn will be available in select theaters and on video-on-demand on July 18, 2025.

She's at dinner with her younger co-star, Nan Roth, who's playing her daughter in the Egyptian epic they're filming in Italy. Finally Dawn (2025) Movie Review: Fellinie-esque excess and coming-of-age meet the hollowness of Hollywood
Image
You’ve seen this before. A young, unassuming person suddenly gets thrust into the Hollywood limelight as they realize the vanity and hollowness of all the glitter. Saverio Costanzo, who you may know from HBO’s beloved Italian drama “My Brilliant Friend,” is no stranger to the 1950s. “Finalmente l’alba (Finally Dawn)”, which is set in the same period and features an ensemble Hollywood cast, evokes a singular time in Italian movie history when Cinecitta (one of the prominent studios of the time) was known for hosting lavish, sword-and-sandals epics like Ben-Hur.

The young person in question here is Mimosa (Rebecca Antonaci), a doe-eyed movie lover whose love for the medium is quickly established as she, her mother, and a more conventionally attractive older sister Iris (Sofia Panizzi) come out of the latest War movie playing in their local theatre in Rome. As they exit the theatre, discussing the obsession...

Lily James Teases Her "Feral" and "Raw" Remake of Sylvester Stallone's Classic 68% Rotten Tomatoes Action Flick
Image
Since its 1993 release, multiple efforts have been made to either reboot or continue Sylvester Stallone’s high-altitude action film, Cliffhanger. One of the more recent iterations had Stallone attached in a supporting role that would have seen him pass the torch to a new generation of mountain climbers, much like his approach in Creed. However, that version fell apart following a major creative overhaul, which brought on a new set of cast and characters as well as a new director. The project was subsequently reimagined as a gender-swapped remake, with Lily James taking on the lead role. Now, James has provided an encouraging update, confirming that the film has made significant progress and is on track to hit screens soon.

James will next be seen in the movie, Finally Dawn, due out next weekend on July 18, 2025. While promoting the film recently, the actress spoke to ScreenRant, in an interview where...

The movies star major names like Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Dominic Cooper, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski, who were joined by Lily James, Cher, and Andy Garcia in 2018's Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. These musical movies are undeniably cheerful. Who can forget Firth, Skarsgård, Brosnan, and their younger counterparts dancing around in '70s-style Abba-inspired outfits?

‘It's feral, it's raw’: Lily James teases ‘real re-imagining’ of Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger
Lily James has teased the Cliffhanger reboot is a “real re-imagining” of the original movie. The 36-year-old actress will star in the new take of Sylvester Stallone’s 1993 action flick as Naomi Cooper, and James has now revealed Cliffhanger is “definitely different” to the first flick.Speaking with Screen Rant, she said: “I don't want to say too much to give it away right now. What I will say is I had one of the most thrilling experiences of my life. We shot in the Dolomites. We were there for six weeks on the mountains. “I was really hanging off mountains. We had to shut down multiple times because of freak snowstorms. “The story is very much through Naomi and her sister Sydney. I would hope that we are maintaining what people love about the original cliffhanger, but it's definitely different. “It's feral, it's raw. It's a real re-imagining, and I am producing it too.

Reboot Of Sylvester Stallone's $255M Action Movie Teased By New Star, 36: "It's Feral, It's Raw"
Image
Lily James teases that her upcoming movie Cliffhangeris very different from Sylvester Stallone's original movie she's remaking. News of the Cliffhanger reboot movie came last year as James was revealed to be the franchise's new star, with Jaume Collet-Serra directing and Pierce Brosnan acting as a co-star.

The upcoming film is a remake of Sylvester Stallone's 1993 action film directed by Renny Harlin. He starred as a mountain climber who is thrust into a position to stop a plane robbery after failing to save his girlfriend. Cliffhanger was a huge hit, grossing $255 million worldwide, making the TriStar Pictures release the seventh biggest film of 1993.

There have not been many updates on the reboot since it was announced, but star Lily James provided some new Cliffhanger details during a recent interview with Screen Rant's Joe Deckelmeier to promote her new film, Finally Dawn, which hits theaters on July 18, 2025. James teased her practical stunts,...

Netflix Seals Multi-Year Pact With Carry-On Director Jaume Collet-Serra
David Fincher
Netflix confirmed on 9 July that Collet-Serra has signed a wide-ranging production agreement covering feature development, directing and producing duties for its global service, a step the company says will “keep our momentum going” after their recent collaboration. The pact places the 51-year-old filmmaker in an elite circle that includes David Fincher and Noah Baumbach, two of the few other directors with comparable arrangements at the platform.

The move follows the outsize success of Carry-On, an airport-set thriller that has drawn 185 million views since December and now ranks behind only Red Notice among Netflix originals. Collet-Serra’s experience on that project, he said, demonstrated that the streamer “knows how to deliver big, high-stakes stories that audiences love,” a sentiment echoed by Netflix film vice-president Doug Belgrad.

First on the new slate is An Innocent Girl, a Washington-set psychological thriller produced with Berlanti/Schechter Films; the story follows an ambitious woman...

Carry-On Director Jaume Collet-Serra Signs Overall Film Deal With Netflix, Includes Cliffhanger Remake
Image
Carry-Ondirector Jaume Collet-Serra signs an overall film deal with Netflix, and one of his top projects is a new Cliffhanger.

Per Deadline, Collet-Serra has officially signed a multi-year overall film deal with the streaming giant, and has no less than three features in the works that will presumably be released through Netflix. Among these are psychological thriller An Innocent Girl, survival thriller Play Dead, and a re-imagining of 1993's Cliffhanger already set to star Lily James and Pierce Brosnan.

An Innocent Girl is described as a tight psychological thriller in which an ambitious young woman is drawn into the private lives of a high-power D.C. couple, which soon spirals into a story of sex, murder, and the lust for power. Play Dead was noted as being akin to Don't Breathe crossed with 1917, implying plenty of tense moments amidst some massive set pieces. Neither film currently has a planned release date,...

Riz Ahmed and Lily James Run for Their Lives in the First Trailer for New Thriller From Director of Taylor Sheridan's Most Underrated Movie
Image
David Mackenzie, the director behind Hell or High Water—arguably Taylor Sheridan’s most underrated and critically acclaimed film—returns this summer with Relay, a sleek new thriller starring Riz Ahmed and Lily James, and based on the atmosphere in the trailer, paranoia is back on the menu. The new movie, which had its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival to strong reviews, will officially hit theaters on August 22, courtesy of Bleecker Street. Critics have already called Relay “a twisty, confident homage to classic paranoid thrillers” and “a great ride, firing on all cylinders”—with a strong Rotten Tomatoes score of 81% to back it up.

In Relay, Ahmed plays a hyper-disciplined fixer who operates in total secrecy, brokering dangerous deals between whistleblowers and the shady corporations who want them silenced. There's no personal involvement, everything is off the record, none of this ever happened. That is, until James...

New Thriller From Director Of Taylor Sheridan's 97% Rt Western Gets Gripping First Trailer
Image
A new thriller, from the director of Taylor Sheridan's Western with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, gets a gripping first trailer. Sheridan is best known as the co-creator behind the popular neo-Western series Yellowstone and its various prequels, including 1883 and 1923. He has since created several streaming series for Paramount+, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, Lioness, and Landman.

In addition to these television series, Sheridan has also written several films, including the screenplay for Sicario, directed by Denis Villeneuve, and its sequel Sicario: Day of the Soldado, directed by Stefano Sollima. Sheridan scored an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for writing the neo-Western Hell or High Water, directed by David Mackenzie.

Riz Ahmed and Lily James in Relay (2024)
Bleecker Street Sets Aug. 22 Bow for Riz Ahmed Thriller Relay
Riz Ahmed and Lily James in Relay (2024)
Bleecker Street has unveiled the first full trailer for “Relay,” director David Mackenzie’s thriller starring Riz Ahmed and Lily James, and set an August 22, 2025 U.S. theatrical date. The film bowed at TIFF last September and will have its U.S. festival launch at Tribeca on June 7 before expanding nationwide.

The two-minute preview positions Ahmed’s character Tom—an enigmatic “fixer” who brokers hush-money deals between corporations and would-be whistle-blowers—as he agrees to protect biotech scientist Sarah, played by James, whose leak threatens a powerful chemical firm. The tense clip, rolled out across studio channels and sites such as JoBlo and The Playlist, leans on sparse dialogue and quick-cut action to highlight Mackenzie’s return to the crime genre after Hell or High Water.

Entertainment Weekly’s first-look feature notes that Ahmed remains silent for the film’s opening half-hour, underscoring Tom’s reliance on anonymity and rigid...

Relay: Riz Ahmed tries to “fix” Lily James’ whistleblowing scandal in thrilling full trailer
Blanka Kot and Agnieszka Zulewska in High Water (2022)
Having premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, it’s been a while since we heard any news on Hell or High Water director David Mackenzie’s latest movie, Relay. But now we have the full trailer ahead of its release next month.

In the trailer for Relay, we see Lily James’s Sarah in desperate need of help when she comes into possession of potentially dangerous documents, being redirected to a man who we hear say, “I help people who see things they shouldn’t have. Maybe they should have looked the other way but they can’t.” What follows is a web of paranoia and intrigue that seems to call back to a genre of thriller that seems almost non-existent now.

Here is the official plot synopsis, as per Bleecker Street: “In Relay, Riz Ahmed plays a world class “fixer” who specializes in brokering lucrative payoffs between corrupt...

Riz Ahmed & Lily James in 'Relay' Corporate Corruption Thriller Trailer
Image
"Has it ever gone wrong?" "Sometimes we have to walk away..." Bleecker Street has unveiled the trailer for a movie called Relay, a clever thriller from filmmaker David Mackenzie. This first premiered at last year's Toronto Film Festival to mixed reviews, and it just played at this year's Tribeca Film Festival as well. A world-class "fixer" is enlisted by an alluring, unpredictable whistleblower in a "twisty, confident homage to classic paranoid thrillers". A broker of lucrative payoffs between corrupt corporations and the individuals who threaten them breaks his own rules when a new client seeks his protection to stay alive. TIFF says the film is "riddled with ingenious feats of misdirection, novel set pieces, and jaw-dropping twists that would have made Hitchcock proud." Starring Riz Ahmed & Lily James, along with Sam Worthington, Willa Fitzgerald, Matthew Maher, Mike Holt, and Eisa Davis. The film currently has 81% on Rt, and looks intriguing enough to watch.
