Elizabeth Hurley in The Piper (2023)
Dancing to his tune by Jennie Kermode
Elizabeth Hurley in The Piper (2023)
The Piper

A young adult horror film based around the story of the Pied Piper but also exploring the difficult relationship between a mother and daughter, with a ghost story and a dash of romance thrown in, Piper had its première at last year’s Frightfest. It’s now about to get a digital release in the UK. In between, I spoke with Anthony Waller, who not only directs but appears in the film – something he’s pleased to have done, he said, because it means that he can now brag to people that he was married to Elizabeth Hurley, even if it was only onscreen. She plays the troubled mother of the film’s main character, Amy (Mia Jenkins), who struggles to deal with her growing up and getting involved with young traveller Luca (Jack Stewart) after they relocate to the town of Hamelin.

“I was offered it from some Australian producers.

The Piper Review: Folklore’s Haunting Reimagining
Image
Anthony Waller’s newest scary story, the Pied Piper of Hamelin, is based on a story from hundreds of years ago and turns into a terrifying modern nightmare. This movie brings an old German myth about treason, supernatural revenge, and the effects that last for generations to modern Hamelin, giving it new life.

At its heart, the story is about Liz Haines (Elizabeth Hurley), a history teacher who moves to Hamelin with her teenage daughter Amy (Mia Jenkins) and falls into a dark magical trap without realizing it. The town’s famous story about a mysterious musician luring away children as punishment for people breaking their vows is more than just a footnote in history.

The movie combines the original folktale with modern horror elements, making the Pied Piper into an angry ghost that still walks the streets of the Middle Ages. In contrast to other retellings, this one delves deeper into the mind,...

Piper review – Elizabeth Hurley dances a merry tune in cheesy rat-based folk horror
Hurley in Alone for Christmas (2013)
Hurley arrives in Pied Piper territory with her daughter to take a teaching job at a creepy private school. Soon enough the town’s infamous rodent problem starts being an issue

The premise for this horror exercise is a potent notion, one that might have yielded a chilling work of Mitteleuropean folk horror: the Pied Piper of Hamelin is a supernatural being still kicking around the German town, luring children to their deaths as punishment for parents’ sins. Unfortunately, the film-makers fluff the brief, with too much showing and telling and not enough simmering mystery. That said, the end result is so comically tawdry and silly you can’t but wonder if its all a bit of a tongue-in-cheek goof, a gag that Elizabeth Hurley at least seems to be in on, judging by her ripe, almost-winking performance. Let’s hope she had fun shooting it and got to keep...

Piper: Elizabeth Hurley, Anthony Waller horror film gets a November release date
Image
Two years have gone by since we learned that Elizabeth Hurley (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) had signed on to star in Piper, a new horror film from director Anthony Waller. More than a year has passed since the film had its world premiere at FrightFest… but now it’s ready for a wider release. Digital Media, the digital film distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has picked up Piper distribution rights and will be making it available to rent/own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, as of November 12th.

Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle...

‘Geek Girl’ Review: Emily Carey Shines in Netflix’s Wholesome YA Fashion Comedy
Image
One of the trickiest aspects of HBO’s House of the Dragon was the way viewers spent roughly half of the drama’s first season with “younger” versions of our two heroines — Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower — before a time jump brought longer-term stars Emma D’Arcy and Olivia Cooke to the screen.

That put a lot of pressure on Milly Alcock and Emily Carey to anchor those initial episodes, which they did extremely well. Alcock had the greater visibility, quickly becoming a red carpet favorite and setting herself up for the opportunity to play Supergirl. Carey’s first major House of the Dragon follow-up, Netflix’s adaptation of Holly Smale’s coming-of-age Geek Girl series, isn’t as high profile as joining DC’s House of Zor-El, but it’s a solid showcase for its 21-year-old star.

Geek Girl is a likably wholesome, generally low-stakes YA fairy tale — references to...

Shin Ha-kyun and Yoo Joon-sang in Pied Piper (2016)
Piper - Jennie Kermode - 18573
Shin Ha-kyun and Yoo Joon-sang in Pied Piper (2016)
Most of you will no doubt be familiar with the story of the Pied Piper: how in 1248 the people of Hamelin secured the services of a travelling musician who promised to rid them of their rodent infestation, and how, when he was true to his word and they reneged on theirs, he took their children in lieu of the promised payment. It’s a story which you can’t fail to be confronted with in Hamelin itself, which has built an entire tourist industry around it. This is just another cringe factor for teenager Amy (Mia Jenkins), who is already unhappy about having her life derailed so that her mother Liz (Elizabeth Hurley) can take up a teaching job at the international school (fictionally) located there. She tries to be a good sport about it, but after a disturbing incident at the school, she can’t shake the feeling that something is.

Back in 1995, director Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle – the 2000 Bill Pullman thriller The Guilty, the 2009 sci-fi horror film 9 Miles Down – and here’s hoping that Piper will earn him some positive attention again.

Liz Hurley comes up against an evil, child-stealing folklore legend in supernatural thriller Piper, which THR shares a first look from.

The film is a darker and contemporary twist on the Pied Piper of Hamelin story, whose vindictive restless spirit seeks out those who have gotten away with a crime, and punishes them by taking away their children, explains the site.

‘Mood’ Review: Sharp BBC America Series Tackles Music, Social Media and Sex Work
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The musical drama Mood arrives on BBC America having followed a one-woman-show-to-tv-series pipeline similar to the one that previously yielded Chewing Gum and Fleabag.

Does that mean Mood creator/star Nicôle Lecky is the next Michaela Coel or Phoebe Waller-Bridge? That’s a high and fairly unreasonable bar to expect any relative newcomer to reach, but based on this series, it’s obvious that Lecky is a charismatic and versatile performer with a distinctive writing voice and some provocative, if maybe not revelatory, things on her mind.

At only six episodes of 45-ish minutes apiece, Mood is worth watching as Lecky’s breakout, regardless of whether or not she follows in the sprawling footsteps of those recent generational talents.

Lecky plays Sasha, a largely directionless 20-something living with her mom (Jessica Hynes), stepdad (Paul Kaye) and bratty teenage half-sister (Mia Jenkins) in East London.

The Piper: Elizabeth Hurley takes on supernatural evil in Anthony Waller film

Back in 1995, director Anthony Waller made an impressive breakthrough with the thriller Mute Witness… then quickly squandered the good will he had earned with that movie by following it up with An American Werewolf in Paris. Waller has made a couple movies since the Paris debacle – the 2000 Bill Pullman thriller The Guilty, the 2009 sci-fi horror film 9 Miles Down – and now he’s back with another excursion into the horror genre. You can check it out at the bottom of this article.

Scripted by Waller from a story by Duncan Kennedy, this supernatural thriller is said to put Hurley against “an evil, child-stealing folklore legend” in “a darker and contemporary twist on the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin,...
