Sometimes, it's better to just leave the classics alone rather than try to remake them. Hulu has officially announced that Poltergeist, the 2015 remake of the 1982 film of the same name, will begin streaming on the platform on October 30. The remake stars Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kennedi Clements, and Saxon Sharbino, and follows a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces who must band together to rescue their youngest daughter after she's taken by a mysterious captive. Poltergeist (2015) earned $95 million at the worldwide box office on a reported budget of $35 million, with a nearly even $47 and $48 million split coming from domestic and international earnings. In addition to Rockwell, DeWitt, Clements, and Sharbino, Poltergeist also stars Jared Harris, Jane Adams, and Susan Heyward, and currently sits at "rotten" scores of 29% from critics and 22% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

The second that news is released about any beloved horror film getting the remake treatment, there's usually a collective upheaval in the horror community and the film is almost immediately shunned. To be honest, I am not one of those horror fans that totally shuts a remake out; I'm an equal opportunity viewer. When it was announced that everyone's favorite haunted family was going to be given a contemporary spin, I was pissed...and then I wasn't...and then I saw the movie. I am pissed again.
If you're not familiar with the original story of Poltergeist, it follows a family whose home becomes plagued by spirits and when they're terrorized one night by all kinds of supernatural mayhem, these spirits kidnap the youngest daughter, Carol Anne. Now playing in theaters is director Gil Kenan’s (Monster House) contemporary remake of the classic horror film Poltergeist. Produced by Sam Raimi, the redo stars Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt as parents trying to fend off a spiritual invasion and save their eight-year-old daughter (Kennedi Clements) from the evil forces trying to take her. The film also stars Jared Harris, Saxon Sharbino, Kyle Catlett, Susan Heyward and Nicholas Braun. While some might be nervous about the remake, I was actually surprised by how well it’s put together. However, it’s definitely aimed at a younger audience, and it’s important to know that going in. For more on Poltergeist, here’s director Gil Kenan, the trailer, Perri’s review and a clip. At the recent Los Angeles press day, I spoke to Kenan. While I already posted part 1 of our conversation (he talked about his first cut of the film,...

Chicago – Whether it’s the 1982 original or the remake just released in theaters today to the wrath of numerous fans, the lesson of “Poltergeist” remains the same: Don’t do a half-assed job when relocating skeletons for corporate greed, or suffer the supernatural consequences.
Fear not, however, as this is one remake that doesn’t just dress up a nostalgic skeleton for the modern horror crowd, but one that reminisces, and looks forward, with a mostly intelligent, genuine heart.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Produced by Sam Raimi and crediting its story to the one made Steven Spielberg, this remake of the 1982 Tobe Hooper film involves a new family, the Bowens, as they move into a house with its own bad mojo. There’s a weird electric air in their new home, which husband Eric (Sam Rockwell) and wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) have brought young Madison (Kennedi Clements), son Griffin (Kyle Catlett), and older daughter Kendra (Saxon Sharbino) into.

"They’re here." The 1982 horror classic Poltergeist, directed by Toby Hooper of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre fame, and highly influenced by Steven Spielberg, has been an influence for many horror films since its release. It's no surprise, especially for a horror film, that a remake would be inevitable. How does one fill the shoes of the original Poltergeist? You don’t. It’s impossible. Director Gil Kenan, who directed 2006’s animated Monster House, takes on the unenvied task of updating Poltergeist. With a few accomplished scenes and set pieces, this updated product hits all the highlights, but looses all the substance that made the original a portrait of quaint suburban life turned into a nightmare.
The Bowen family move into a suburban community and strange occurrences begin happening in their new home. Eric (Sam Rockwell) is looking for a fresh start after being recently laid off from his job...

Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist was one of my first horror movies and perhaps the first to give me nightmares (thankfully there’s 24-hour programming now because the thought of that late night TV sign-off still gives me the creeps). When you hold a film so near and dear, it’s tough not to walk into a screening of the remake ready to tear it apart for exploiting the original, but the new Poltergeist is actually a nice surprise. Is it as good as the original? No, but it does rock some fantastic performances, a very appealing sense of humor and a whole bunch of fun scares, too. It certainly won’t wind up becoming a classic like the original, but it’s still a good time if you’re looking for an entertaining thrill. Similar to the 1982 original, Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist focuses on a family of five, Eric (Sam Rockwell...

Director Gil Kenan's work on "Poltergeist" is, like his work on "City Of Ember" and "Monster House," smart and focused and technically adept. He has done about as good a job as anyone would have done with David Lindsay-Abaire's screenplay based on the 1982 film, and the same is true of the cast. Sam Rockwell, Rosemarie DeWitt, Jared Harris, and Jane Adams are all very good at what they do. The various visual effects houses and tech departments on the film all did what they were hired to do, and taken as a whole, "Poltergeist" is professional and slick and entirely fine. It's also unnecessary in every way. There are a few moments here and there where Kenan pieces together a few images or a few new ideas, and in those moments, we get a glimpse of the potential for doing a new "Poltergeist." For the most part, though,...

What made Tobe Hooper's -- or Steven Spielberg's, depending on whom you ask -- Poltergeist so iconic was how it blended a mix of humor, heart and character with the same atmosphere and tension. It became the rare mainstream Hollywood thriller with just the right technical and creative talent to shine. In turn, Gil Kenan's 2015 remake is disappointing in how it's basically the opposite: cold, generic and entirely ho-hum. It's by no means the worst horror remake of late, but that it has the skills behind-and-in-front of the camera to exceed and only settles on mediocrity makes this re-imagining almost as degrading. Kenan's take follows the Bowen family, which includes the recently unemployed Eric (Sam Rockwell), his wife Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) and their three children -- older daughter Kendra (Saxon Sharbino), son Griffin (Kyle Catlett) and youngest daughter Madison (Kennedi Clements) -- as they've just moved into a new suburban home.

If familiarity breeds contempt then overfamiliarity brings boredom. This lazy, unimaginative remake of horror classic Poltergeist supplies snores instead of shudders and inertia instead of intrigue, failing to muster any significant fresh ideas or sustain any tension.
Moving into a property built on an ancient burial ground is a marginally more doomed accommodation arrangement than a flatshare with Katie Hopkins and Perez Hilton. As per its predecessor's plot, the 2015 version positions a wholesome American family in this precarious scenario and unleashes a procession of progressively supernatural proceedings on them.
Whereas Steven Spielberg and Tobe Hooper's original transfixed viewers with its imaginative sense of dread and foreboding atmosphere, Gil Kenan's remake spectacularly fails to instill a sense of jeopardy despite some smart camerawork and solid performances from all the leads,...

If you have any inclination to see this, just rewatch the original. You will lose nothing, and you’ll have a far better time. I’m “biast” (pro): love Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt
I’m “biast” (con): big fan of the 1982 original
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I don’t understand why this movie exists. There’s no reason for it. I mean, I get the business reason why someone decided it was a good idea to cash in on a nearly 35-year-old movie that many critics (including me) and fans consider one of the greatest horror movies ever made. But no one on the supposed creative side of this “new” Poltergeist could be bothered to even pretend to have something to add, something fresh to say that wasn’t said back in 1982 about the trials of a suburban American family whose house is menaced by nasty spirits.

Well, the big studios have finally gotten around to another summer cinema staple. Let’s see, for 2015 we’ve had a couple of sequels (Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Pitch Perfect 2), a reboot (Mad Max: Fury Road), and a brassy lady-driven comedy (Hot Pursuit). So now, it’s time for that other, often dreaded, “R-word”: the remake (usually called a “re-imagining” by sneaky PR types). Oh, and this is another 1980’s classic like January 2014’s Robocop. But we’ll go back a few years before that shoot-em-up satire of 1987. It’s 1982, the summer of Spielberg, when he had his biggest (at that time) box office smash with E.T. The Extra-terrestrial. Now Mr. S wrote and directed that one, but a few weeks before that opened, he produced and wrote another huge hit. Now, yet another prominent blockbuster director, Sam Raimi, is the producer of this new scare-fest. To paraphrase...

The players have changed but the story remains the same with a few slight alterations. And I do mean slight rendering this remake ultimately pointless. The Bowen family is down on their luck. Eric (Sam Rockwell) has recently been laid off from his longterm gig with John Deere and Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt) is a struggling writer and stayathome mom. Their three children Kendra (Saxon Sharbino) Griffin (Kyle Catlett) and Maddy (Kennedi Clements) arent too jazzed to make this move to a lesser neighborhood a lesser house and a lesser life. But they are a unit and so they stick together.

Though the calendar dawn of summer is still a month away, the 2015 summer movie season is already in full swing. So far, it’s off to a pretty strong start: whether you’re looking for a new tentpole release from Marvel, the thunderous return of a long-dormant franchise, or some brainy sci-fi, the multiplex has got you covered. All the same, it’ll take a number of other surprises and successes before 2015’s blockbuster season earns the same hallowed reputation as 1982’s “Summer of Spielberg.” E.T., Star Trek II, and Rocky III all landed within a two-week span of one another, making for a summer slate so crowded that even the year’s 8th highest-grossing film, Poltergeist, could seem like an afterthought.

“Clear your minds. They know what scares you.”
British director Gil Kenan proved his atmospheric take on the horror and fantasy genres with his movies Monster House and City of Ember. Now, with legendary filmmaker and producer Sam Raimi (Spiderman, Evil Dead, The Grudge), Kenan directs the remake of the classic 1982 horror movie Poltergeist.
Poltergeist contemporizes the scary tale about a family – starring Sam Rockwell (Moon, The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy) and Rosemarie DeWitt (Cinderella Man, Rachel Getting Married) – whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces.
When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter (Kennedi Clements) captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.
The movie also features Nicholas Braun, Kyle Catlett, Saxon Sharbino, Jane Adams and Jared Harris.

Tobe Hooper's Poltergeist is a classic. It's not going to be easy for the 20th Century Fox marketing team to convince longtime fans that Gil Kenan's film might actually be a worthy remake, and they're definitely not going to do so by releasing clips like this. Collider had the honor of premiering the very first Poltergeist clip a couple of weeks ago. I can't say there was anything particularly mind-blowing about it, but it did successfully recreate an iconic scene from the original within a more modern setting. This one, however, doesn't achieve much at all. In fact, it just states the obvious in a rather dull manner. No, you don't want to spoil your big scares promoting the film, but showing off something with a little more life to it than this would have been nice. Watch Jane Adams' character explain what a poltergeist is capable...

For the soundtrack, available May 19 via Sony Classical, Kenan chose German film score composer Marc Streitenfeld, known for his collaborations with director Ridley Scott.
Acknowledged for his ambitious and intelligent score for Prometheus, as well as the multi-faceted soundtrack, The Grey, Streitenfeld...

Remember when we unveiled that Poltergeist clip and told you about our Periscope event? Well, the time has come! Tonight at 5pm Pst, check out the Collider Periscope account to open a portal to “the other side,” the grim half-way point where the Poltergeist takes its victims. The portal will open for about 5 to 10 minutes at a time and give you the chance to have a personal interaction with an evil entity from the other side. In case you haven't created a Periscope account yet, it's a new app from Twitter that lets you host a live broadcast that your followers can watch in real-time. I can't say I'm hooked just yet, but I have been playing around with it quite a bit over the week and it could be a game-changer for immersive marketing. So don’t forget - tonight, starting at 5pm Pst on Periscope. You can also...

Dr. Claire Adams (Jane Adams) explains the differences between relatively-harmless ghosts and malevolent entities known as poltergeists in a new clip from MGM's Poltergeist remake. This scene shows Claire consulting with the Bowen family, Eric (Sam Rockwell), Amy (Rosemarie DeWitt), Kendra (Saxon Sharbino) and Griffin (Kyle Catlett), explaining that ghosts are normally "harmless apparitions" but poltergeists are violent. The end of this clip shows Amy asking if its possible that this poltergeist could have taken their youngest daughter, Madi (Kennedi Clements).
The remake was produced by legendary filmmaker Sam Raimi (Spider-Man, The Evil Dead, The Grudge) and directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House). This new version is a contemporary take the classic tale about a family whose suburban home is haunted by evil forces. When the terrifying apparitions escalate their attacks and hold the youngest daughter captive, the family must come together to rescue her before she disappears forever.

There have been trailers for the upcoming Poltergeist remake and I know in them Kennedi Clements, who plays little Madison Bowen, says the iconic, "They're here" line, so I can't tell if this new clip is that moment or if this is simply earlier in the film, before "they" actually arrive, which is why she only says, "They're coming." However, this does present a spin on the hand reaching through the television moment that happens in the original. It has been so long since I saw Poltergeist I can't remember if there is both a "They're coming" and a "They're here" scene, but there definitely is a "They're coming" scene in the remake which arrives on May 22 and didn't happen to get a mention in Jordan's list of "must see" movies for the month. “They’re coming.” It may not have the same ring, but there’s certainly something unsettling about Kennedi Clements being utterly dwarfed by the massive flat screen in this new Poltergeist clip, a reworking of one of the original’s most iconic moments. It does make you wonder why the film won’t just use “They’re here,” though. Is…

In this first clip eight-year-old daughter (Kennedi Clements) is speaking to her HD television set, which is displaying all static. As a diehard fan of the 1982 original, I am beyond thrilled to unveil the very first clip from Gil Kenan’s Poltergeist remake. Just like in Tobe Hooper’s film, Kenan’s will feature a family that moves into a new home and comes to learn that their development was built on a cemetery, but not before some nasty evil forces make contact with their eight-year-old daughter (Kennedi Clements) and bring her into their realm. There’s been a good deal of talk about how Kenan is putting a contemporary spin on the classic tale and you can really feel it in this clip. The setting and tech are modern, but the conversation between little Madison and the TV static is clearly right in line with the same scene from the original film. Sticking with the theme of adapting to modern times and trying something completely new, we’re also...

Creepy clown dolls are never a good investment, as proven by the new trailer for the upcoming "Poltergeist" reboot.
That terrifying object is just one of many that will make you jump in this clip, which centers around the paranormal investigator (Jared Harris) who comes into the Bowen home to help them get back their daughter, Maddie (Kennedi Clements), who's been kidnapped by the titular tormentor.
"This isn't just a few pissed off spirits," Harris not-so-helpfully explains. "It's a poltergeist."
The spirit causes hallucinations, odd electrical surges, and objects to move freely about the house, preying up the Bowens' predisposed fears to make their lives a living hell. Harris urges the family to clear their minds (not unlike in "Ghostbusters," before Dan Aykroyd unwittingly summons the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man), though it seems the Bowens are still in for a world of trouble.
"Poltergeist" also stars Rosemarie DeWitt and Sam Rockwell.

The first trailer for the new take on Poltergeist arrived back in February, offering the first proper look at the new family being bothered by some pesky supernatural troublemakers. Moving into a suburban home, they discover it needs a bit more than just a coat of paint and some new furniture: it’s also linked to the spirit world through a variety of portals. With director Gil Kenan wrangling the haunting action, this new film also features Evil Dead duo Sam Raimi as the producers, looking to ramp up the madness. 20th Century Fox and MGM have released a new Poltergeist trailer and poster for director Gil Kenan’s (Monster House) contemporary remake of the classic horror film. Produced by Sam Raimi, the redo stars Sam Rockwell and Rosemarie DeWitt as parents trying to fend off a spiritual invasion and save their eight-year-old daughter (Kennedi Clements) from the evil forces trying to take her. This new trailer is certainly unsettling, and while it's unlikely the remake will match the effect of the original film, it at least looks like Kenan is making solid use of today's visual effects technology without using it as a crutch. Overall, though, the film doesn't look like it deviates from the plot of the original too heavily, and I'm most curious to see what significant changes (if any) are made in the update. Watch the new Poltergeist trailer below, followed by the terrifying new poster, and...
