On July 17, 1955, Walt Disney invited guests to "leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow, and fantasy" as he welcomed them to Disneyland for the first time. 70 years later, droves of ecstatic Disney fans are still making their way to the magical theme park in Anaheim, California that has served as a source of joy and inspiration for generations around the globe.
As inspiring as the Disneyland Resort has been for fans, the Imagineers tasked with expanding and evolving the parks find inspiration from the films of The Walt Disney Company and beyond. However, that pipeline has started to move both ways in more recent years as filmmakers have started to create movies based on attractions that previously had no roots to a previously established intellectual property from the silver screen.

Gerard Butler’s Controversial Fantasy Film with a ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Is Now Streaming on Netflix
This August, Netflix is adding another movie to its library that has sparked strong opinions among viewers, Gods of Egypt. The film originally came out in 2016 and is a fantasy action story set in a made-up version of ancient Egypt, filled with gods and epic battles. It features a big cast including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Élodie Yung, Gerard Butler, and Geoffrey Rush. The story follows Horus, an Egyptian god, who teams up with a mortal thief to save the world and rescue his love from the evil god Set.
Gods of Egypt was released worldwide by Lionsgate in February 2016. It was available in regular 2D, 3D, and IMAX theaters. However, the movie didn’t do well with critics or at the box office. Despite making about $150 million globally, it barely covered its $140 million budget and ended up losing an estimated $90 million for Lionsgate. The movie even got...

Gerard Butler’s Divisive Fantasy Movie with a ‘Game of Thrones’ Star Is Finally Streaming on Netflix
This August, Netflix is adding Gods of Egypt to its library, a movie that has divided audiences since its release. Gods of Egypt is a 2016 fantasy action film directed by Alex Proyas. The film features a star-studded cast including Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Élodie Yung, Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush, and others.
When Gods of Egypt hit theaters in February 2016, it was released worldwide by Lionsgate in multiple formats. The movie did not perform well at the box office. Few action stars have built up as impressive a resume as Gerard Butler has over the years, but after starring in 20 years worth of action movies, it’s only natural that there’s going to be some misses. 2016 brought on the release of Gods of Egypt, the fantasy thriller in which Butler stars alongside Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther). The controversial film had been absent from streaming for a few months now, but Netflix has since made it available to watch for all subscribers. Gods of Egypt was poorly received upon its release, earning “Rotten” scores of 15% from critics and 37% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also flopped at the box office, grossing only $150 million at the box office against a $140 million budget.

Many fans of "Reacher" might not have been all that familiar with series star Alan Ritchson prior to the show's debut. If so, it certainly wasn't down to a lack of projects on the actor's résumé. Ritchson really broke through by playing Jack Reacher and, as such, must have seemed to some as if he'd come out of nowhere to play the bulky ex-military policeman. But the man has actually been toiling away since the early 2000s.
In his now two-decade career, Ritchson has appeared on screens both big and small in a variety of projects, including "Above the Shadows" (an overlooked Mma movie that's now streaming on Prime Video), multiple seasons playing Hank Hall/Hawk on DC's "Titans," and two "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" movies (though Ritchson hated filming them). The actor's long career actually stretches all the way back to 2006 when he first played Arthur Curry/Aquaman on...

Following the success of Superman, fans are eager to see who else will enter the Dcu. While many names have already been confirmed, there are plenty of characters in this superhero franchise that are under speculation. One notable team is Teen Titans, which has found success over the years as a children's show program. But as the DC Studios prepares to expand its roster, James Gunn has some unfortunate news if you were hoping to see this group on the big screen anytime soon.
Over on Threads, Gunn responded to a fan who wanted to audition for the role of Beast Boy in the Dcu. The superhero filmmaker gave a direct response, saying that they're not casting anyone for the role. This is the second time Gunn has addressed casting rumors for DC's Teen Titans project, as the filmmaker debunked claims that casting would begin sometime in the fall.

As arguably the most famous superhero to come from DC Comics, Batman has starred in multimedia adaptations of the character for over 80 years. This includes live-action depictions of the character in everything from movie serials to television shows and, of course, feature films. Given the malleability and variety of portrayals of the character, every Batman is somebody's favorite out there, based on their sensibilities and when they were introduced to the hero. Of course, not all Dark Knights are created equal and some live-action appearances just don't quite stack up with more widely celebrated performances of the Caped Crusader.
With the sheer breadth of voiceover actors who have played Batman in animated projects, radio serials, and video games, this list sticks to live-action appearances of the DC character. As much as Kevin Conroy defined the character for multiple generations over 30 years, he is respectfully not included. This also means live-action...

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is currently in uncharted waters, with multiple projects in development but no definitive course set for its future.
Disney and longtime Pirates producer Jerry Bruckheimer are reportedly exploring two main creative directions, but a final decision has yet to be made.
One path is a complete reboot, penned by Jeff Nathanson, which would introduce an entirely new cast and storyline.
The other is a spin-off led by a female protagonist, with Margot Robbie rumored to star and Christina Hodson handling the script.
While both projects remain in active development, the studio has yet to commit to either as the official next chapter. Meanwhile, a third possibility has entered the conversation, one that could reunite original cast members.

Hollywood is buzzing with news about the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently spoke about the project, giving fans some fresh details about the sixth film in the popular franchise.
While no release date is set, the team is focused on perfecting the script.
In a recent interview, Bruckheimer hinted that the movie could bring back some well-known characters. “We’ll have some back,” he said when asked if the film would feature an entirely new cast. He kept fans guessing by adding, “I’m not going to tell you which ones — you’ll have to guess.” This news has sparked excitement that some original stars might return.
The upcoming film will offer a fresh take on the Pirates story, according to Bruckheimer. “It’ll be a new take on it,” he explained, suggesting the movie won’t follow the same path as past entries.

There’s been a lot of talk about what’s going on with Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and now producer Jerry Bruckheimer has finally given fans a bit of an update. Even though the movie still doesn’t have a release date, Bruckheimer told ScreenRant that they’re working on the script and trying to get it just right.
While many people thought the next Pirates movie would have a totally new cast, that might not be the case. In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, Bruckheimer said some familiar faces could return.
“We’re working on a screenplay. Hopefully we’ll get it right — and then we’ll make it. We really want to make it, that’s for sure,” he said.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is still navigating rough seas, but franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer just dropped the clearest hint yet that the series won’t be charting an entirely new course. While promoting F1 — his latest movie, starring Brad Pitt and directed by Joseph Kosinski — Bruckheimer gave ScreenRant a status update on the long-in-development Disney tentpole — and strongly implied that at least some of the franchise’s original cast may return. “We’re working on a screenplay,” Bruckheimer said. “Hopefully we’ll get it right — and then we’ll make it. We really want to make it, that’s for sure.”
Asked whether the next Pirates movie would be a reboot or a continuation, he added: “It’ll be a new take on it.” And when pressed about whether the cast would be brand-new, he smiled: “Well, not all new actors. We’ll have some back.”

Pirates of the Caribbean franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer teases returning cast members in the upcoming sixth installment. The project has been in development since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was in the works, but in light of Amber Heard's abuse allegations, Disney dropped the lead star, Johnny Depp, from the franchise. During Depp's defamation trial against Heard, the Jack Sparrow star expressed that he had no interest in returning.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan for F1, which will be released on June 27, Bruckheimer offers an update on Pirates of the Caribbean 6's cast and the sequel's current status. The franchise producer revealed that they are still working on the script, which will be "a new take," but it won't be a brand-new cast. Bruckheimer confirmed that some members would return. The Life of Chuck is easily Mike Flanagan’s least scary offering, which is interesting to note considering the new adaptation of Stephen King’s novella is set around the pending apocalypse. What it is, however, is Flanagan’s coziest and most gentle offering, which helps explain why the drama won the highly coveted People’s Choice award at last fall’s Toronto International Film Festival – and could ride a wave of strong reviews into this fall’s Oscar race.
Prior to Chuck, of course, Flanagan has worked exclusively in the stuff of nightmares, becoming one of the horror’s world’s most revered writer-directors thanks to genre favorites on screens big and small.
In our latest edition of The Gold Standard, Flanagan looks back at 20-plus years of filmmaking, from his humble beginnings on the shoestring-budgeted debut Absentia to a horrific experience making Haunting of Hill House to his award-wining latest offering Chuck,...

Mike Flanagan is a modern-day horror master and the man behind some of the scariest contemporary horror movies and series like Hush, The Haunting of Hill House, and Doctor Sleep. The filmmaker serves as showrunner, director, and editor of many of his works, and has been a leading voice in the genre.
Flanagan was already one movie old when he made his breakthrough film Oculus. It starred Karen Gillan, Brenton Thwaites, and Katee Sackhoff in lead roles. Flanagan’s wife and frequent collaborator Kate Siegel also contributed in a supporting role. Sackhoff revealed that though she loved the part, she had a panic attack while on the set of Oculus.

Orlando Bloom says he’s still open to returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean series, but right now, nothing’s confirmed. Bloom, who played Will Turner in four of the films from 2003 to 2017, last showed up in Dead Men Tell No Tales with Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley.
That movie had a post-credits scene that teased a possible comeback for the original trio, Will, Elizabeth, and Captain Jack Sparrow, against Davy Jones, played by Bill Nighy. But since then, things have gone quiet.
Talking on the UK show This Morning, Bloom said there’s been some movement behind the scenes, but no real updates yet. “There’s been all kinds of things,” he said. “Who knows? There’s been talk [of a sixth movie]. I can’t say anything at the moment, because I really don’t know.” He also said, “I think they’re trying to work out what it would all look like.

It's hard to imagine a time when Alan Ritchson wasn't portraying the hulk of a man known as Jack Reacher in Prime Video's record breaking series "Reacher." The 6-foot 3-inch 235-pound Ritchson seems to have been born to play the giant former military policeman, and since debuting in the role in 2022, he's given fans of Lee Child's novel series, on which the show is based, a book-accurate Jack Reacher that lives up to all expectations.
But it took Ritchson a little while to find the role that has come to define his career thus far. During filming on "Reacher," the show's cast pranked him with an embarrassing part of his past by showing his "American Idol" audition from way back in 2004, proving that even bulky badasses were once just awkward kids. As Ava makes her way south, across the ravaged landscape, she soon learns that some of the victims of the disaster are coming back to life.
The film most recently screened on closing night of the Atlanta Film Festival, and previously screened to great critical acclaim at SXSW 2025 and the Adelaide Film Festival.

The upcoming Cannes market is seeing a whole slew of films picked up by distributors, including the 70s serial killer thriller, Golden State Killer, starring James Franco and Vincent Gallo. Deadline is now reporting that Daisy Ridley’s post-apocalyptic zombie film, We Bury the Dead, has also been sold. We Bury the Dead has been acquired by Vertical Entertainment.
Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey made a statement about the acquisition that said, “With a great cast led by Daisy Ridley and Brenton Thwaites, Zak has re-energized the zombie genre with We Bury the Dead. Next year, North American audiences will be on the edge of their seats watching this post-apocalyptic thriller.” Scripted by Hilditch, We Bury the Dead is said to be “a story about grief, loss, and the undead.” Ridley takes on the role of Ava, a desperate woman whose husband is missing in the aftermath of a catastrophic military experiment.

Some subgenres of horror are so well-worn that it’s hard to find genuinely original new films in that style. We Bury the Dead offers an unconventional approach to the zombie genre, emphasizing emotion over straightforward scares, resulting in a film that is much more affecting and dread-inducing than the typical flick about the undead.
We Bury the Dead Review
The film is set in Tasmania after the accidental detonation of a weapon that kills everyone on the island, as a woman volunteers to retrieve the bodies of the dead, hoping to find her missing husband, soon discovering that many of the dead are exhibiting signs of life. Although Zak Hilditch’s script hits many familiar beats and tropes, it explores them with an uncommon emotion and vulnerability that elevates it beyond this familiarity.

Plot: After a military experiment gone wrong, much of the population of Australia has been killed by a chemical weapons discharge. Yet, among the dead, some of the victims have come back “online” where they’re not exactly living, and not exactly dead. An American woman (Daisy Ridley) searching for her husband volunteers to be part of a body retrieval unit but soon goes off the grid.
Review: It’s tough to make an original zombie flick (although hopefully that will soon change). Ever since 28 Days Later reinvigorated the genre back in 2003, we’ve been inundated with movie after movie, not to mention hundreds of episodes of The Walking Dead (and its spin-offs) and others. Into the fray comes the Australian We Bury the Dead, which is an attempt to make an elevated, realistic exploration of the genre. In this one, the undead are never referred to as “zombies...

Writer/Director Zak Hilditch enters the familiar realm of zombies to explore the pursuit of closure and the emotional fallout that entails in meditative zombie drama We Bury the Dead. Daisy Ridley stars in this moody piece that manages to find new ground when it comes to the well-trodden zombie horror, delivering a few bursts of genuine scares in the process and an awe-inducing sense of scale. But Hilditch’s hesitance to abandon familiar territory, thematic and otherwise, and a tacked-on provocative ending counteracts the strengths of this otherwise stunningly crafted feature.

Zak Hilditch’s Australian disaster feature “We Bury the Dead” wrestles with how much it wants to be a zombie movie. It’s at its most interesting and exciting when it approaches the well-worn subgenre with brand-new spins, resulting in haunting scenes that open a cinematic window into the darkest, most mysterious parts of the human condition. Unfortunately, it keeps swerving back toward traditional horror territory at breakneck speed, resulting in a lopsided structure and half-baked philosophical musings clashing against riveting dramatic moments.
Making use of its minimal budget, “We Bury the Dead” creates an immediate sense of scale and spectacle, starting with its central premise, in which the United States accidentally deploys an experimental weapon of mass destruction off Australia’s southern coast. The large-scale Emp has caused up to half a million people to drop dead by shutting down their brains — only for reasons unknown, some of them come“back online,...

The last time zombies dominated the horror genre, George W. Bush was in the White House. Since then, the braindead hordes have retreated — never disappearing completely, of course, but showing up in reduced numbers compared to their heyday of “Shaun of the Dead” and the “28 Days Later” series. Now, with climate change accelerating and fascism on the rise, the mood has turned post-apocalyptic once again.
Multiple films at this year’s SXSW engage with this ambient feeling of existential paranoia. The Australian entry “We Bury the Dead” takes the straightforward zombie-apocalypse route, with a little bit of “elevated” thematics mixed in. And given how many variations on both themes already exist, it’s impressive that writer/director Zak Hilditch has located some fresh angles on the concept.

Before she returns to the Star Wars franchise, Daisy Ridley took a detour into the horror genre with her newest movie, We Bury the Dead. The zombie movie had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW) and has been garnering some praise from those in attendance.
Daisy Ridley's new zombie movie debuted at SXSW and viewers are sharing their reactions. While there has been no shortage of zombie films made since George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead, We Bury the Dead has drawn high marks for doing something different with the genre. The film's cinematography along with Ridley's performance in her lead role have also been touted.
As DiscussingFilm's Joe Aranda on X stated, "We Bury The Dead is zombie movie you haven’t seen before and it does its best to take the genre to new heights with its stunning cinematography.

There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”
While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.

There are a lot of things that Marvel fans are excited about when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Multiverse Saga is about to reach its peak, setting the stage for a lengthy, compelling conclusion to that particular narrative. The Avengers are set to reunite for two major upcoming movies. And Robert Downey Jr. is back in the MCU franchise in the new role of the villainous Doctor Doom. Yes, there is a lot going on in the MCU right now. And yet, at the top of that list of things that fans are most excited for sits the X-Men.
Ever since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox (and allowed the rights of the X-Men to transfer back to Marvel), audiences have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of Marvel's Mightiest Mutants in the MCU. After a number of years, the stage is set for their arrival in the upcoming...

How does every Gerard Butler Action Movie rank beside each other, with Den of Thieves hitting theaters in 2025? Butler trained initially to become a lawyer before a change of heart saw him pursue acting inside. Oddly, his breakthrough role came as the titular bloodsucker in Dracula 2000, a movie that didn't win over audiences or critics. He always seemed on the cusp of stardom without entirely tipping over. That changed significantly thanks to Zack Snyder's 300 in 2007, where his mega turn as King Leonidas instantly propelled him to the A-list.
Over the years, Butler has made everything from tender dramas like Dear Frankie to rom-coms with P.S. I Love You or animation with the Watchmen horror spinoff Tales of the Black Freighter. However, action has become Butler's stock-in-trade, whether fantasy blockbusters or gritty cop thrillers. The star has cornered the market in terms of fronting modestly budget, R-rated action...

The box office can be a cruel wake-up call for many filmmakers and studios, whether it's by misreading what the audience wants, like a remake of The Crow, or facing the harsh reality that the movie is objectively horrible, like Borderlands. Cinephiles don't usually want to see a project fall flat, except for maybe the upcoming Skibidi Toilet movie. However, a box office bomb is always an interesting talking point, a study of big studios not knowing what to do. Many of the biggest flops of all time are still discussed to this day; online pundits will always bring up productions like The Lone Ranger or The Marvels as a means to put down another film even before it hits the theaters.
Gods of Egypt lands more in the long and forgotten category of box office flops, and would've remained that way if it hadn't made some news in late...

Fear Is the Rider: Ben Mendelsohn, Toby Wallace, & more join Abbey Lee in Australian Outback slasher
Nearly three years have passed since it was first announced that Abbey Lee (Old) and Christopher Abbott (Possessor) had signed on to star in the Australian Outback thriller Fear Is the Rider, which is coming to us from John Michael McDonagh, the BAFTA-nominated writer/director of the 2011 film The Guard… and while the project has lost Abbott in that time, it’s still alive, and Abbey Lee is still attached to star in it. Deadline reports that Lee has now been joined in the cast by Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One), Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders), and Eliza Scanlen (Babyteeth). Film Constellation and CAA Media Finance will be seeking distribution deals at this week’s American Film Market.

Fear is the Rider, described as an ode to “gore-drenched Ozploitation slashers of the 1970s,” sees a woman pursued in the Australian Outback by a pack of ruthless serial killers. While that already has our attention, Deadline reports the nod to gory slashers has lined up an impressive cast so far.

Alan Ritchson broke out big time thanks to his role as Jack Reacher in the hit Prime Video series Reacher, but several years before playing the big guy, he starred in a supernatural horror film opposite some major names. Ritchson stars alongside Theo Rossi and Kyle Gallner in Ghosts of War, the 2020 horror film that follows five American soldiers assigned to hold a French Chteau at the end of World War II. What they think will be a run-of-the-mill assignment turns out to be far more dangerous than anything they've ever encountered thanks to a supernatural enemy. The film also stars Brenton Thwaites and Billy Zane, and currently sits at a "rotten" 40% score from critics but a 65% rating from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Well, no one can accuse DC films of making boring choices anymore. James Gunn, co-president of DC Studios with Peter Safran and director of the upcoming David Corenswet-led "Superman" film, shared news of the latest DC project on X (it's still Twitter to us). What is this project? "Dynamic Duo," but it's not a Batman picture. No, this will star the first two Robins. Per James Gunn, "Over the moon excited to announce the newest DC Studios/Warner Bros Pictures Animation greenlit film for theaters, 'Dynamic Duo,' the story of Robin ... or should I say, Robins, as in Dick Grayson and Jason Todd." DC is partnering with New Orleans-based puppetry/animation studio Swaybox as part of the company's first feature. Check out Swaybox's medium-blending reel below:

Landlubbers, ye be warned, there be spoilers for the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies ahead.
Although the original "Pirates of the Caribbean" film, "The Curse of the Black Pearl," released in 2003, is still widely beloved and properly appreciated, the rest of the franchise gets a bad rap. The consensus is that director Gore Verbinski made one good movie, but everything after that was a bad case of diminishing returns.
It's a shame, because some of those sequels are pretty great. In fact, one of them is even better than the original, if you can believe it. Making the first three "Pirates" films age even better is their absurdly strong CGI, which is impressive even by today's standards, and their willingness to get weird and creative in a way that so many modern franchises refuse to do. It's fun to watch a big blockbuster film that takes itself seriously and isn't...
