Continuing their recent trend of acquisitions, IFC Midnight has tossed another found footage alien adventure into the ring with Daniel Simpson’s Hangar 10 – a monotonous effort that somehow makes Alien Abduction seem endearing, exciting, and extraterrestrially invigorating. Yet again a filmmaker experiments with shaky camera angles, choppy footage and off-camera action while supposedly creating the next great invasion thriller, dragging audiences down a disenchanted road without a modicum of entertainment in sight. The Vicious brothers recently schooled science fiction buffs with their own invasion flick, Extraterrestrial, yet Daniel Simpson’s film learns nothing from the more jovial genre ploy by revering back to boredom, sluggishness, and inconsequential storytelling that focuses on anything But non-stop action. The thrills fall flat, the scares die quick, and we’re left with a few treasure hunters sporting some nasty, aggravating attitudes, who spend most of their time mesmerized by flashing lights – like moths to a dimly lit,...

Despite such bland, generic branding, the Vicious Brothers’ Extraterrestrial shies away from repeating the same mistakes of their ambitiously convoluted last film, Grave Encounters 2, by reaching for a fast-paced, fun-filled watch that’s more in line with their original Grave Encounters. Alien invasion movies have been recycled time and time again – a statement also easily said about found-footage – but the Vicious Brothers decide instead to go the route of reinvention. Why not just have a ton of fun playing with other-worldly stereotypes? Unfortunately there’s no reward without risk, as this haunting chase won’t go down in history, but if you’re looking for a confident horror flick about gangly grey men, strap in and hold on. The ride may be bumpy, but enough flashing lights and shadowy figures distract from a passable simplicity – or maybe I was just brainwashed to believe as much?

Stars: Brittany Allen, Freddie Stroma, Melanie Papalia, Jesse Moss, Anja Savcic, Sean Rogerson, Emily Perkins, Mike Kovac, Fred Keating, Gil Bellows, Michael Ironside | Written and Directed by The Vicious Brothers
The Vicious Brothers, writer/directors of the two popular Grave Encounters found-footage flicks, turn their hands to a more traditional narrative movie, mixing traditional filming methods with their penchant for Pov shaky-cam, with Extraterrestrial.
Still reeling from her parents divorce, April (Brittany Allen) is dragged back to the vacation cabin she spent fond summers at as a child accompanied by a group of friends. Her trip down memory lane takes a dramatic and terrifying turn when a fireball descends from the sky and explodes in the nearby woods. Lead by her boyfriend (Freddie Stroma), the group venture out toward the crash site and discover the remnants of a ship from another planet along with footprints that suggest its alien occupants are still alive.

Utterly empty. It’s aware of the tropes of the new mythos of alien abductions, but makes no attempt to find anything even the slightest bit fresh in them. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): so tired of traditional horror movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
It’s literally a Cabin in the Woods scenario in which the hapless 20somethings invoke — among all the many scary options for their own mass slaughter they didn’t realize they had — an alien abduction, and without Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins having made bets on it. When I said that Cabin “render[ed] all past and future examples of the genre superfluous,” this is precisely the sort of movie I was imagining could no longer be made in its wake… and frankly I’m astonished that anyone had the gumption to do so. The Vicious Brothers are no rookies to horror. Cult classic Grave Encounters and its sequel are neatly tucked into their resume and now they are delving into a completely different spectrum of horror with Extraterrestrial. I’m sure you can guess what it’s about.
A group of kids head out into the woods to spend a weekend partying. April (Brittany Allen) and Kyle (Freddie Stroma) are a solid couple who bring along April’s best friend Mel (Melanie Papalia, The Den) and the obligatory loud friend Seth (Jesse Moss) and his newest arm candy Lex (Anja Savcic.) Before long they get on bad terms with Sheriff Murray (Gil Bellows) and wander onto a gigantic pot farm being grown by an old acquaintance of April, the conspiracy theorist Travis (played by the always great Michael Ironside).

The evening kicks off with a special preview of The Vicious Brothers Extraterrestrial, a fine blend of Close Encounters and Communion with “some of the most extraordinary special effects and camerawork you’ll see in 2015″. Next up, The ABC’s of Death 2 needs no introduction. The first was a huge draw at FrightFest Glasgow and now attendees can scream along to 26 more deaths by 26 handpicked filmmakers. This is followed by the world premiere of Anthony Diblasi’s demonic horror Last Shift, which had to be dropped from the August line-up because of altered release and completion dates as did the next film – the highly anticipated sequel The Pact II, which has its UK premiere. Normally when a group of college friends head out into the woods for a weekend trip, they encounter dangerous locals, crazed serial killers or haunted houses. But in Extraterrestial, the latest film from the Grave Encounters filmmaking duo known as The Vicious Brothers, it's aliens who have come to Earth and create some terror in a small town. This looks like your typical horror film, but the presence of aliens makes it a little more interesting, and it looks to be a harmless and fun flick. Here's not only a new trailer for the sci-fi horror romp, but also the previous trailer we missed last month, and a couple cool posters. Here's the latest trailer for The Vicious Brothers' Extraterrestrial from YouTube: And here's the first Us trailer which we somehow missed last month from YouTube: And here's two posters both from the UK and Us release from Empire...

Grave Encounters directors The Vicious Brothers debut their new trailer for Extraterrestrial, which comes with the bold words “the definitive close encounter”. 2011’s Grave Encounters was some very cheesy fun, but Extraterrestrial looks like it is attempting to take itself a little more serious, or at that’s what the trailer seems to be selling. It has Scanners and Total Recall star Michael Ironside, which is a big plus. It does look like a combo of Fire in the Sky and last year’s Dark Skies, but Extraterrestrial might end up being a decent little film. The film hits theaters in limited release on November 21st.

I wasnt crazy about either Grave Encounters film which is what essentially put The Vicious Brothers (Colin Minihan and Stuart Ortiz) on the map. Im not opposed to a filmmaker changing my mind either. The latest from this duo Extraterrestrial is an extremely dark alien flick that could be just the swing in career momentum to see a whole lot of new fans added to the already existing supporters of The Vicious Brothers. Ill certainly been tuning in for this one.

The Vicious Brothers, the team behind the chilling found footage flick, Grave Encounters, are back to scare again. Their last film saw a group of ghosthunters/total nutters venturing into an abandoned psychiatric hospital, with the hopes of taping genuine ghost footage. It managed to sidestep the pitfalls of the format and provide enough scares to make you wish you still had a nightlight. Their newest flick, Extraterrestrial, looks set to make you terrified of E.T.

Philadelphia's Awesome Fest sounds… well… awesome. To be clear, though, it appears this is an evolution of the already-existent event, which is now being called The Bruce Campbell Horror Film Festival. As you would expect with a name like that, Bruce Campbell will indeed be there as part of the four-day event in Rosemont, Il, where they'll also be screening a slate of horror titles curated by Scott Weinberg, horror maven and the resident critic at the just-killed FEARnet. They'll also have panels, and they've got some great ones planned. Overall, it looks like a really cool chance to see a fistful of the best of what indie horror has going on right now with bonuses that simply make the weekend better. From August 21 to August 24, you'll be able to check out some great films. How? Well, here's how they put it: Tickets for All screenings are free to attend...

I never really thought I'd get excited for an alien abduction movie, especially one that looks somewhere between War of the Worlds and Fire in the Sky but good god Extraterrestrial looks amazing.
I'm not even exaggerating. The first trailer for The Vicious Brothers (previously of Grave Encounters (review)) penned and directed alien horror is spectacular to behold, even if the trailer uses that annoying as hell horn sound. It's bloody, terrifying and at times completely disorienting.

"Extraterrestrial" follows a group of friends on a weekend trip to a cabin in the woods who find themselves terrorized by alien visitors. At Tribeca, an Indiewire critic gave "Extraterrestrial" gave the film credit for its technical chops: "The camera and lens work look significantly better than the budget suggests, the CGI is impressive, and white light spills from flashlights and windows like thick white gauze." However, he also said, "These are the kind of horny, alcohol-fueled young people who think it’s a good idea to split up and search the endless dark corridors of insane asylums, and who can’t figure out how to get around a log in the road." The film stars Brittany Allen, Freddie Stroma, Jesse Moss, and Melanie Papalia,...

The Vicious Brothers wrote the initial draft of the screenplay for "Extraterrestrial" while they were in college — and it shows: the film displays all the nuance and cleverness of a freshmen’s first short story. They substitute overt rip-offs for allusions, vague stand-ins for characters, painful manipulation for emotional resonance. This is the sibling directors' second feature, and while it’s admittedly a vast technical improvement over their first film, the inexplicable cult-favorite "Grave Encounters" (another of the myriad found-footage films proliferating on streaming services), it shares the same inane tendencies. The people inhabiting the Vicious universe (Viciousverse?) are stupid, and the universe they inhabit follows suit. These are the kind of horny, alcohol-fueled young people who think it’s a good idea to split up and search the endless dark corridors of insane asylums, and who can’t figure out how to get around a log in the road.

Extraterrestrial
Written and Directed by the Vicious Brothers
USA, 2014
One reasonable response to the credits of the horror film Extraterrestrial might be, “‘A film by The Vicious Brothers’? Are these guys for real?” Naturally, the answer is no: writer/director Colin Minihan and writer Stu Ortiz (the Canadian team behind 2011’s Grave Encounter) are not related. They just wanted a unique and memorable name under which to make movies. There’s nothing wrong with choosing a badass nom de plume (as Samuel Clemens might have said), but there’s a lot wrong with Extraterrestrial. It’s a movie stuck in limbo, neither as scary nor as funny as it ought to be.
The plot is as spare and straightforward as possible: April (Daytime Emmy award winner Brittany Allen) is going up to her father’s cabin in the woods, and taking her boyfriend and a group of compadres with her.
