Al Sharpton Limited Series In Works At ABC Signature With Anthony Anderson Eyed To Star & EP
Image
Exclusive: ABC Signature has acquired The Redemption of Al Sharpton, the recent Esquire profile of the civil rights activist by Pulitzer Prize winner Mitchell S. Jackson, to develop as a limited series. No talent is attached at this point but the intention is for Anthony Anderson to star as Sharpton and executive produce through his Just a Kid from Compton Productions. The company’s Evi Regev also is executive producing the project, now in very early stages, along with Artists First’s E. Brian Dobbins (black-ish). Jackson is getting a producing credit.

For The Redemption of Al Sharpton, published in February, Jackson followed the politician & TV/radio personality around the country “to find out why he keeps going, what he’s still doing, and where his place in history will be.”

The profile looks to reconcile Sharpton’s image as “a beacon of the civil-rights movement” and as “a loudmouth in a tracksuit,...

Anthony Anderson replaced on We Are Family finale as fans show concern
Image
We Are Family viewers showed concern when the game show’s usual host was missing from the finale, as he was in the emergency room a month ago.

Actor and comedian Anthony Anderson has hosted the game show since its Fox debut.

The multi-time Primetime Emmy nominee typically appears along with his mother, Doris Anderson, and they’ve been well-received as a duo.

Doris was there, but her son was noticeably absent from the big episode on Wednesday evening, as fellow actor, comedian, and host Joel McHale filled in.

The game show’s season finale was “Joel Control” ahead of the Season 2 premiere of his new comedy series, Animal Control, which arrives on Fox on March 6.

It was also another hosting gig for Joel, who previously filled in for Ken Jeong on Fox’s I Can See Your Voice.

McHale filled in as Anderson misses We Are Family

Sarah Palin Gets Negative Fan Reaction For Her Surprise Appearance On Singing Competition ‘We Are Family’
Image
Former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin made a surprise appearance on the latest episode of Fox’s singing competition show, We Are Family.

Hosted by actor and comedian Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, the show has non-famous relatives of celebrities showcase their singing talent and later join their secret famous family member for a duet on stage. The studio audience competes to guess the celebrity and win up to $150,000.

Palin, known for her previous appearance on The Masked Singer as the Bear, emerged in a sparkly silver dress to perform a duet of Garth Brooks‘ country classic Friends in Low Places with her non-famous cousin, Jd. The performance marked Palin’s return to reality singing competitions, after her memorable rendition of Sir Mix-a-Lot‘s “Baby Got Back” on The Masked Singer.

While many viewers expressed their disappointment with Palin’s participation on social media, others were intrigued...

Emmy Awards: What You Didn’t See on TV – Reunions, Selfies and Football
Image
This year’s Emmy Awards were all about TV reunions, while audiences around the country got to see the cast of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Cheers” reunite, there were some unofficial ones that didn’t make the live broadcast.

Take the “Yellowjackets” cast and crew, who got back together before the show started.

The show was nominated for two Emmys including best drama series and lead actress in a drama for Melanie Lynskey. Hours before the show aired, the teen cast including Liv Hewson, Courtney Eaton, Sophie Nélisse, Sammi Hanratty and Kevin Alves had gathered in the lobby, chatting and taking selfies before doors to the main theater were open. They were joined by Warren Kole and later director Karyn Kusama and showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson, as well as Tawny Cypress.

Yes, season 3 is being written and the show is expected to be back in production in late May.

Emmy Producers on Pulling Off Those Reunions, What Was Cut and How ‘Mama Doris’ Helped Make the Show End Early
Image
Mission accomplished: Not only did the Emmys end on time, but several times throughout the telecast, it was actually ahead of schedule. Variety caught up with Emmys telecast producers Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon and Jeannae Rouzan-Clay on Tuesday morning — just hours after wrapping the event — and all three felt gratified and relieved to have pulled off an Emmys befitting the kudocast’s 75th anniversary.

“Our intention was to create a love letter to television and to sprinkle in the reunions and the nostalgia throughout,” said Harmon. “It was received the way that we hoped it would be, so we’re glad it made everybody happy.”

Added Collins: “There was a definitely a little anxiety going into it, because we took some swings. It was ambitious and we were like, ‘Is this actually going to work?’ But we felt good about it in the end.”

The Best Moments From the 75th Emmy Awards
Image
The Emmy Awards honored historic TV shows, recreating old sets and reuniting familiar casts, providing a trip down memory lane. Anthony Anderson's mother hilariously played the role of the "play-off mama," guiding winners offstage with funny signs. Niecy Nash-Betts gave an empowering acceptance speech, thanking herself and advocating for Black and Brown women who have been unheard and overpoliced.

After months of delay due to last year’s strikes, the Emmy Awards finally aired on Fox on Monday night. Hosted by Anthony Anderson at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, the event’s 75th ceremony used the star-studded occasion to honor historic television shows of the past, such as The Sopranos, Cheers, The Twilight Zone, and Ally McBeal, to name a few. Old sets were recreated onstage, and familiar casts were reunited in some of the most delightful and memorable moments of the night. In a show that managed...

Anthony Anderson’s Mom Doris Succeeds in Keeping Emmys at 3-Hour Runtime
Image
Host Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, had quite the time at the 2023 Emmys on Monday.

Anderson announced last week that his mother would be attending television’s biggest night with him and that he and the producers were looking for “smart ways to incorporate her” in the evening’s festivities.

What they found was that, instead of the awards show’s notorious play-off music, Bowman would be the one letting people know when their acceptance speeches were going over the allotted time, and she did her job so well that the broadcast ended exactly when it was supposed to.

Jennifer Coolidge, who received the Emmy Award for best supporting actress in a drama series for The White Lotus, was the first person Bowman had to warn that time was up. Anderson’s mother put up a cardboard sign with a drawing of a clock on it and a red “X,...

Emmys: The Ovations, Flubs and Everything Else the Cameras Missed
Image
On Monday evening, the biggest names in television — and Anthony Anderson’s mom, Doris — congregated at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater for the 2023 Emmy Awards. But with so many A-listers on hand, the cameras could only catch so much for viewers at home. Here’s what they missed:

— It appears that that capital T talent has been velvet curtained from the countless plebes (cough, cough, writers and executives) desperately trying to get a drink in the Peacock lobby. There are several exceptions. White Lotus nominee F. Murray Abraham — not canceled for everybody — stops for multiple selfies before making his way into the theater.

— And, since last we Emmy’d in this building (Rip Microsoft theater!), they’ve installed those no-check out snack stations where they just Know what you take, like the airport bodegas or those apocalyptic Amazon Fresh supermarkets. Succession director (and, later, Emmy winner) Mark Mylod, terminally polite, takes...

5 Emmy Moments Not on TV (Including What Pedro Pascal Said in Bleeped Speech!)
Image
The 2023 Primetime Emmys actually took place in 2024 — namely, today, January 15, 2024 — after a delay courtesy of the since-ended strikes.

TV’s best gathered for the long-long-awaited awards ceremony at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, as hosted by “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson. Those who watched at home missed out on expletives bleeped and moments cut from the telecast, but IndieWire’s Marcus Jones was live in the room to round up what you didn’t see.

(See the night’s full list of winners here.)

1. Host Anthony Anderson’s mom set the ground rules for the evening — keep your speech under 45 seconds, or else…

Emmys host Anthony Anderson’s mother Doris Bowman made an appearance during the first-time host’s cold open bit, but prior to the show beginning, she stepped onstage to set some ground rules for the evening ahead: “Mama Doris is here, and I have a few announcements for you.

Katherine Heigl Reunites With ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Castmates at Emmys
Image
The 75th Emmys on Monday, January 15, included an eagerly-awaited reunion of beloved Grey’s Anatomy cast members Ellen Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, James Pickens Jr., and Chandra Wilson. The host of the show, Anthony Anderson, began the sequence by recounting his mother, Mama Doris, and her love for medical dramas, especially Grey’s Anatomy. Then, the cast walked into the mock medical room in full red carpet regalia. “When the first episode of Grey’s Anatomy aired in March of 2005, I’m not sure if Shonda Rhimes knew that she had created a show that would have a lasting imprint on television and create lifelong friendships,” Pompeo said to the audience. They all spoke on the impact of the series, with Heigl cheekily mentioning how much things have changed since the show’s inception, a nod to her shifting away from the series. “And yes, there have been changes over the years,...

It filled me up. It gave me a passion and set a fire in me to match the beautiful work done by [showrunners] Christopher Storer and Joanna Calo.”

Dead to Me star (and best actress in a comedy series nominee) Christina Applegate received an early standing ovation when presenting the supporting actress in a comedy series category. “Oh my God, you’re...

The opening was set in his “living room” after a title card for “Mister Anderson’s Neighborhood.” The songs included themes from Good Times, The Facts of Life and Miami Vice.

Emmys Host Anthony Anderson Opens Night With Classic TV Themes, Travis Barker & His Mom
Image
Good or bad, the opening of an awards show is going to have people talking. And in the case of the 2023 Emmys for host Anthony Anderson, he didn’t play, delivering an entertaining monologue that set the stage for a fun night (and showing he didn’t have to include scathing remarks about the shows or talent being honored). Anderson was joined by Blink 182’s Travis Barker and his mother, Doris Bowman, to kick off the night. “We’re going to commemorate the greatest shows of today while paying tribute to some of the iconic series that much mean so much to us,” he explained. “Simply put, television has shaped the world, and more importantly, it’s shaped me. Now, I have learned a great deal about life from my mother. She taught me everything I know. But I also learned a lot from the television shows that I watched growing up.

Anthony Anderson Pays Tribute To Classic TV In Emmy’s Opening Musical Number
Image
Anthony Anderson paid tribute to classic TV shows Good Times, Facts of Life, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Miami Vice in the opening musical number on tonight’s Emmys, with the Black-ish star belting out some earworm theme songs from behind his piano.

“No Good Times, no Black-ish,” Anderson said introducing the former’s memorable “ain’t we lucky we got ’em” theme song, the show’s famous “Black Jesus” portrait hanging in the background.

For Miami Vice‘s “In The Air Tonight,” Anderson was joined by blink-182’s Travis Barker on drums.

Anderson made his entrance spoofing Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood (re-titled Mr. Anderson’s Neighborhood), changing out of a fur (seemingly) coat for a tux jacket.

Following the brief opening musical number — just snippets from the three theme songs — Anderson, an 11-time Emmy nominee for the ABC sitcom making his Emmy hosting debut, laid down some ground rules (his mother...

Emmy Host Anthony Anderson Wows in Etro, One of Up to Six Looks Planned for the Night
Image
Anthony Anderson’s passion for style is known in Hollywood and fashion circles alike, and that idea should further reveal itself as the actor hosts Monday’s 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards. Star stylist Courtney Mays said Anderson may wear up to six formalwear looks — plus a few surprises — at the event, taking place at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter on Saturday afternoon — with the dress rehearsal still hours away — Mays was optimistic the fashion changes wouldn’t be complicated, enabling Anderson to showcase his well-documented peacock aesthetic. “It’s all a matter of timing; we’ll have a stopwatch during dress rehearsal,” Mays noted two days before the show. “In a couple of cases it’s mainly just about changing a jacket, and we’ll also have a terrific team around us. So you might see all six looks, which...

THR’s Guide to the Emmys: Everything You Need to Know Before Tonight’s Show
Image
Welcome to the time warp.

Technically, the awards being doled out live from the Peacock Theater at 5 p.m. Pst are the 2023 Emmy awards. The telecast had been scheduled to air back in September, but, like so much else in Hollywood, the Emmys were sidelined by the strikes. Now, four months later, the show will go on — on Fox, with Anthony Anderson as the evening’s emcee.

So, what does it all mean for the show? Let’s break it down.

1. Voting members of the TV Academy cast their votes as planned last summer for programming and performances that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023. The complete list of nominees was announced July 12, two days before the SAG strike began, which feels like an eternity ago in Hollywood years. Had the Emmys remained on schedule, none of it would seem so odd. But now, all these months later, it means The Daily Show with Trevor Noah,...

Emmys 2024: Performers & Presenters Revealed, Including Exciting Reunions
Image
The Television Academy has announced the full list of performers and presenters who will appear at the upcoming 75th Emmy Awards.

The show, which was originally supposed to air in 2023, will now take place on Monday night (January 15) at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles.

The ceremony is going to air on Fox and will be broadcast live coast-to-coast. It will be available on Hulu the next day.

The executive producers of the show have teased that there will be “show-stopping cast reunions and tributes to hit television series spanning seven-plus decades.”

Host Anthony Anderson also revealed his unconventional plan for keeping things moving on Emmy night. Instead of the traditional play-off music to wrap up long speeches, for the first time in Emmy history, his mother, Doris Bowman aka Mama Doris, will act as the “enforcer” to ensure a swift pace of the telecast.

As Hollywood returns to production following this year’s historic WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Fox has announced winter and spring premiere dates for its returning scripted series including “Alert: Missing Persons Unit,” “The Cleaning Lady,” and its latest comedy “Animal Control.”

Also, as part of its midseason rollout, Fox is breaking up its “Animation Domination” stalwarts, moving “Family Guy” to Wednesday — marking the first time it hasn’t aired on Sundays in two decades.

Élodie Yung starrer “The Cleaning Lady” (now in Season 3) and the sophomore season of police procedural “Alert: Missing Persons Unit” officially return on Tuesday, March 5.

Joel McHale sitcom “Animal Control” returns on March 6, landing between new season premieres for “The Masked Singer” and the relocated “Family Guy.”

Fox’s revised Sunday animation lineup kicks off Jan. 7, immediately following the Fox NFL doubleheader with a special preview of the new series “Grimsburg,” starring and executive-produced by Jon Hamm.

Fox Midseason Premiere Dates: ‘The Cleaning Lady’, ‘Alert’ & ‘Animal Control’ Set March Return As ‘Family Guy’ Moves To Midweek Slot
Image
Fox is looking to March for the return of its scripted slate.

The network has unveiled its midseason schedule including the return of The Cleaning Lady, Alert: Missing Persons Unit and Animal Control. The trio of scripted shows are premiering at the beginning of March following the writers and actors strike.

Elsewhere, Family Guy is moving to a midweek slot on Wednesdays after Animal Control, building out another comedy hour. It is thought to be the first time since the third season that Peter Griffin and family have aired midweek on Fox.

It comes after it pushed 9-1-1: Lone Star to the 2023/24 fall schedule alongside new series Doc and Rescue Hi-Surf, which had previously been eyed for a 2022/23 launch. No sign of the second season of Accused, however.

Fox’s returning scripted series come as it has set new dates for a swathe of reality series returning in midseason including The Masked Singer,...

Image
Black-ish alum Anthony Anderson and his mom Doris Bowman (aka “Mama Doris”) are teaming up to host Fox’s new midseason music-centric guessing game show We Are Family. The mother and son duo are replacing previously announced Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne, who are unable to host the show due to a scheduling conflict for Foxx, not a big surprise following all the strike-related production changes and delays. He is still set to executive produce the series, which will premiere Wednesday, January 3.

Showcasing non-famous relatives of celebrities performing duets with their hidden famous family member, We Are Family will feature a studio audience entirely comprised of 100 contestants playing through multiple rounds of clues and gameplay to win up to $100,000 each by correctly guessing which celebrity the performer is related to before they are revealed.

“We’re so excited to have Anthony and Doris headline We Are Family,” said Allison Wallach,...

Anthony Anderson Takes Over For Jamie Foxx As Host of Fox’s New Music Game Show ‘We Are Family’
Image
“Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson and his mother, Doris Bowman, are once again teaming up to host another game show together. The son-and-mother duo have been announced as the new hosts of Fox’s upcoming music gamer “We Are Family,” which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 3.

Anderson and Bowman replace Jamie Foxx and his daughter Corinne Foxx, who had previously been announced for “We Are Family.” Jamie Foxx continues as an executive producer on “We Are Family,” as he presumably recovers from a medical condition that he was hospitalized for earlier this year. Jamie Foxx also hosts another music game show, “Beat Shazam,” for Fox (with Corinne Foxx as the show’s DJ), but Nick Cannon filled in as host, and Kelly Osbourne guested as DJ, for episodes that aired this summer.

Anderson and Bowman — also known as “Mama Doris” — have worked together on several projects, including the gamer “To Tell the Truth,...

Anthony Anderson Opens Up About Scene-Stealer Mom Doris After Their 6-Week Roadtrip
Image
Anthony Anderson and ‘Mama Doris’ Hancox Bowman have been stamping their respective passports across Europe on the series Trippin’ with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris. The star and his (scene-stealer) mom spent six weeks venturing through some of the most beautiful destinations across England, France, and Italy. Their memorable vacation started in London with a sightseeing tour and walking the catwalk during African Fashion Week. From there they checked off bucket list experiences across cities like Paris and Venice. And throughout the two enjoyed luxurious accommodations, wining and dining, shopping, and immersing themselves in the culture. Not a bad gig. Ahead of the finale, we caught up with Anderson about how he celebrated Mama Doris and where the final stop in Rome will lead. He also gives his thoughts and insight about the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. [Note: Since Trippin’ with Anthony Anderson and Mama Doris is a reality show, it does not fall under the SAG-AFTRA strike.] What kind of ...

Anthony Anderson On ‘Black-ish’ Emmy Snub: “Can You Believe That S***?”
Image
Anthony Anderson had some choice words about yesterday’s Emmy snub of his comedy Black-ish, joking about the show’s dearth of major nominations while guest hosting last night on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“You know who did not get nominated for a Primetime Emmy this morning?,” Anderson said near the start of his opening monologue. “America’s sweetheart – me. That’s right, me. Anthony Anderson. And neither did my show Black-ish or my co-star Tracee Ellis Ross.”

Addressing his mother Doris Bowman, who was in the Kimmel audience, Anderson asked, “Can you believe that sh*t, mama?”

“Now I’m not saying the voters were stupid for not nominating me or Black-ish or Tracee,” Anderson continued. “I’m just saying they’re racist.”

From there, Anderson launched into a comic diatribe about some of this year’s nominees: “And you know what did get nominated for Best Comedy?...

Anthony Anderson rips Emmys for ‘Black-ish’ snub while guest hosting “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Image
Whenever awards announcements are made, people are sure to point out what they feel are snubs. But rarely are those critics the performers themselves, and rarer still do they do it on national television.

But that’s what Anthony Anderson did as he guest-hosted “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Tuesday night. His series “Black-ish,” which just wrapped up a successful eighth and final season, only got two craft nominations (for contemporary costumes and contemporary hairstyling), and the 51-year-old actor and comedian was blunt: “Can you believe that shit, mama?”

The camera then cut to Anderson’s mother, Doris Bowman, sitting in the front row who echoed back, “hell no!”

The tongue-in-cheek-but-not-entirely-tongue-in-cheek moment began with Anderson goofing on the nominations coming so early in the morning, then congratulating HBO’s “Succession” on its whopping 25 nominations.

He paused for a moment of sincerity to applaud “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on its nomination, but with a...

Anthony Anderson Reacts to Emmy Snubs for Final ‘Black-ish’ Season: “Can You Believe That S***?”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

Anthony Anderson was experiencing mixed emotions while guest-hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live! on the day that the 2022 Emmy Awards nominations were announced.

Anderson, who filled in for host Jimmy Kimmel on Tuesday, opened his monologue by congratulating the late-night show’s team on its nomination for variety talk series. However, Anderson went on to point out that it wasn’t quite a joyous moment for his own ABC comedy series Black-ish, which signed off in April after eight seasons and earned just two craft nominations for its final season: contemporary costumes and contemporary hairstyling.

“Look, I don’t want to bring the mood down, but I do have a bone to pick with the Academy,” Anderson said. “You know who did not get nominated for a Primetime Emmy this morning? America’s sweetheart, me! That’s right, me — Anthony Anderson — and neither did my show,...

Where Can You Watch “To Tell The Truth?”
With a resurgence of game shows on primetime television, “To Tell the Truth” made a fantastic comeback with ABC in 2016. Its latest reimagination, hosted by the beloved “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson alongside Mama Doris, has captivated audiences.

If you’re looking for an entertaining game show to tune in to with your family or friends, you can enjoy the revival of this classic on ABC on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. Alternatively, if you prefer streaming online, you can find the latest seasons and episodes on ABC and Hulu. Finally, if you’re interested in watching some of the initial seasons, you can buy them on Amazon Prime Video.

The show features a panel of four celebrities and three contestants. Of the three contestants, one plays the real character while the other two play impostors. Before the game begins, the host reads aloud something unusual about the real character that makes them identifiable.

Anthony Anderson Won’t Return for ‘Law & Order’ Season 22
Anthony Anderson at an event for Shrek Forever After (2010)
Anthony Anderson will not be returning for Season 22 of NBC’s “Law and Order,” TheWrap has learned.

Anderson had only signed up to play Det. Kevin Bernard, a role he originated on the network from 2008-2010, for one season. After fulfilling his commitment, he’s set to move on.

In his character’s final appearance in the Season 21 finale, Bernard recruited the help of “Svu” character Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) in the investigation of a police officer’s murder, turning the collaboration into a crossover. The events of the episode did not indicate that Bernard’s time was coming to an end.

Anderson’s relationship with NBCU continues, though. Earlier this month it was announced that Anderson and his mom, Doris Bowman, will jet off to Europe on a six-week vacation for the new reality series “Anthony Anderson and Mom: European Vacation.” The show is coming to E!

E! to Debut Original Rom-Com Films in 2023, Sets New Unscripted Shows From Anthony Anderson, Joel McHale
Image
E! is getting into the original TV movie business.

The NBCUniversal cabler has announced plans to begin programming original romantic comedy films beginning in 2023. The network has commissioned six films to start, though further details about the films were not readily available.

The move into made-for-tv movies at the network comes amid shifting tides in the world of cable and linear television channels. NBCUniversal and other legacy media companies are shifting considerable resources to their streaming efforts, leaving observers wondering what the future of traditional networks like E! will be. Hallmark and Lifetime have both found considerable success with their own slates of original films over the years. Paramount Network was also set to become the home of weekly original films, though Paramount eventually abandoned those plans.

E! is continuing to build out its unscripted offerings as well with the addition of several new shows. Those include “Celebrity Beef” hosted...
