Leading South Korean TV production studio Monster Union has commissioned a local adaptation of British comedy series “Uncle.” The Korean series will be the first localization of the scripted format, which is represented by BBC Studios.

The darkly comic series follows the misadventures of a dissolute, out-of-work musician who forges an unlikely alliance with his 12-year-old nephew after being morally blackmailed into looking after him by his chaotic sister, on the day that the man was planning to kill himself. He is not a natural with either kids or responsibility, and tries to keep his new charge out of trouble but often ends up creating more problems for himself.

Here’s a movie that tells us that the days of summer, like the boys of summer in Don Henley’s song, are going to get outlived by the love they inspire. It’s what happens in this thoroughly sweet-natured, charming and unassuming British film, adapted by screenwriter Lisa Owens from the 2012 graphic novel by Joff Winterhart, with a creamy soundtrack by Belle and Sebastian. Simon Bird (best known for playing Will in TV’s The Inbetweeners) makes his directorial debut.

The first thing to get out of the way is that “Days of the Bagnold Summer” has nothing whatsoever to do with Enid Bagnold, author of “National Velvet” and “The Chalk Garden.” More’s the pity, as Simon Bird’s debut behind the camera, adapted from Joff Winterhart’s graphic novel, could use some of the depth and wit the earlier writer brought to her characters and their situations. Not that the movie is aiming for the same sophisticated vibe – “Bagnold Summer” is about a teenage metalhead forced to spend the summer with his painfully square mother, and its influences come from small, genial American indies with a touch of minor — very minor — Mike Leigh. But : rather too sugared, and immediately forgotten.

After originally being commissioned as a pilot by Channel 4 in 2012, Uncle could have slipped into the ether never to be seen again.

Thankfully, the show was picked up for a full series by BBC Three in 2013 - and immediately became a hit.

Two years on and the show is back for a second series, again starring Nick Helm as Uncle Andy and Elliot Speller-Gillott as his nephew Errol.

Digital Spy spoke to Nick about its return - and why there's a lot of s**t on telly...

What reaction to Uncle were you expecting after the first series aired?

"I worked really hard, I really enjoyed making the first series and I was really proud of it. But you just don't know. It takes just as much work to make something that's awful as it does to make something that's good.

Nick Helm's BBC Three comedy series Uncle has been given a second series.

The show's return was confirmed by the BBC following the conclusion of series one this evening (February 17).

"I am gobsmacked that I have finally been involved in something that people like enough to warrant the need for more of it," said Helm.

"I am looking forward to working with all the cast and crew again, as making the first series was genuinely one of the most fun experiences I've ever had whilst still legitimately being able to call it work."

Henry Normal, from Baby Cow Productions, said: "You have to give respect to the BBC for taking a leap of faith on this show. It's a brave and different commission for BBC Three comedy. Together we have an exceptional team in front and behind camera.

"I love this show. It's a comedy with heart and bite and truth.
