Tom Ripley

‘Influencers’ Review: Living Too Well Gets the Best Revenge in a Sleek Shudder Sequel
Image
Providing a useful variation on Patricia Highsmith’s globe-trotting sociopath Tom Ripley for the social media era, “Influencer” was a hit for Shudder in 2023. So now director Kurtis David Harder and star Cassandra Naud are back with “Influencers,” a worthy sequel that maintains the original’s upscale gloss and narrative twistiness while adding a sufficient number of new wrinkles.

The indictment of narcissistic online culture is still little more then an excuse for glam intrigue, and our not-infrequently-lethal anti-heroine’s motivations remain just as cloudy as they were last time. But a good time in enviable vacation spots is guaranteed, with ghoulish demises for many principal figures here served up like caviar on sashimi. This tasty if not particularly healthy repast will be served on Shudder later this year.

A prologue finds one young woman slitting her own throat on the patio of a luxe Southeast Asian manse, then crawling...

Gwyneth Paltrow Picks $128M Psychological Thriller As Her Top 5 Movies, Believes Matt Damon Should Have Won An Oscar
Image
Gwyneth Paltrow has named a $128 million 1999 psychological thriller movie among her top 5 favorite movies that she has made, as well as suggesting that her co-star should have won an Oscar for his performance. With a dynamic and varied career in film and TV, Paltrow came to prominence with roles in movies like Seven, Emma, Sliding Doors, and A Perfect Murder, before achieving international acclaim for her Academy Award-winning turn in Shakespeare in Love. Parenthood resulted in a reduction in roles in the mid-2000s before she enjoyed a career revival as Pepper Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Paltrow's best films include quirky comedies like The Royal Tenenbaums, as well as independent dramas like Hard Eight, and blockbusters such as Avengers: Infinity War. One of her best and most underrated movies came with Steve Soderbergh's medical thriller ensemble movie Contagion. Among many other big-name stars, such as Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard,...

John Malkovich Starred in a ‘Talented Mr. Ripley’ Sequel That Roger Ebert Loved — But Few Even Know Exists
Image
There's something about Tom Ripley that we still find irresistible—the original charismatic career criminal paved the way for the likes of Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. Tom Ripley leaped from the pages of Patricia Highsmith's novels to the silver screen a number of times. Many of those versions went on to become world-renowned pieces of cinema, be it the tragically sensual The Talented Mr. Ripley or the eerily creepy The American Friend, spinning Tom into wildly different directions. One version that didn't get much initial love when first released was the little-seen Ripley's Game, which saw John Malkovichplay Ripley in a performance that Roger Ebertclaimed was the most definitive portrayal of the character that we've seen.

David Lynch
Oscars 2025 In Memoriam Omissions Spark Backlash
David Lynch
The 2025 Academy Awards featured its annual In Memoriam segment, honoring industry figures who passed away over the last year. While the tribute recognized film legends such as David Lynch, James Earl Jones, Donald Sutherland, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, and Bob Newhart, many viewers quickly pointed out names missing from the televised montage.

Morgan Freeman introduced a special remembrance for two-time Oscar winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, last Wednesday. Quincy Jones also received his own tribute later in the show. The rest of the segment, set to Mozart’s Requiem in D Minor, displayed a montage of those the Academy selected for recognition.

Social media reaction grew as fans noted the absence of several well-known actors and filmmakers. Tony Todd, known for his lead role in Candyman, was not featured. Todd, who died in November at 69, was a familiar face in horror,...

Oscars: Tony Todd, Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty Left Out of In Memoriam Segment
Image
The In Memoriam portion of the 2025 Oscars telecast on Sunday night paid a moving tribute to several stars and movie industry folk who have died over the last year, but there were some notable omissions that were quickly pointed out on social media.

The In Memoriam segment of the show, that was soundtracked to the “Lacrimosa” portion of Mozart’s “Requiem in D Minor,” featured moving tributes to entertainment industry giants the likes of David Lynch, Maggie Smith, Roger Corman, Shelley Duvall, Bob Newhart, James Earl Jones and Donald Sutherland. Two-time Oscar-winner Gene Hackman, who was found dead inside his Sante Fe home alongside his wife Betsy Arakawa, was given a moving special tribute by his longtime friend Morgan Freeman.

But as ever with the Academy Awards and the In Memoriam segment, much of the discussion online is who was omitted from the televised tribute. One of the more glaring omissions was actor Tony Todd,...

Andrew Scott Passed a Kidney Stone at the 2020 SAG Awards Right as Laura Dern Won, Left the Ceremony in an Ambulance With No One Knowing
Image
Andrew Scott is feeling good at tonight’s SAG Awards. But the same can’t be said for the first time the “Ripley” actor was at the ceremony back in 2020 when he passed a kidney stone on the same night he was nominated for his role in “Fleabag.”

“I was beside Phoebe [Waller-Bridge] and Laura Dern had just won best supporting actress and we were standing up,” Scott told Variety‘s Marc Malkin at the SAG Awards red carpet in Los Angeles. “I don’t know if anyone has ever experienced having a kidney stone before, but it sends you, the pain is so immediate.”

Scott recalled how by the time Dern finished accepting her award for “Marriage Story,” he was already ripping off his tux. “I was in the back [of the room]…writhing around in agony.”

He knew what was going on since he had passed a kidney stone before. Waller-Bridge was...

‘Twinless’ Review: Dylan O’Brien Is Outstanding in James Sweeney’s Funny and Twisted Comedy
Image
Writer-director James Sweeney is no stranger to novel concepts that walk a tonal and thematic tightrope. In his 2019 feature-length directorial debut, Straight Up, he starred as a young gay man so turned off by sex that he seeks a relationship with a woman, turning a silly and potentially retrograde setup into an anti-rom-com exploration of contemporary sexual identity, Ocd, and the modern complexities of finding love. Sweeney brings the same keenly observational millennial eye to his sophomore feature, Twinless, a bizarrely moving and darkly comic story about feeling like you’ve lost something you never had.

Twinless opens at a funeral, with the straight Roman (Dylan O’Brien) and his mother (Lauran Graham) receiving mourners after the death of Roman’s twin brother, Rocky (also O’Brien). Struggling with the loss of his other half, the shy Roman joins a bereavement support group for siblings processing the death of a twin,...

Switzerland: Helen Mirren plays Ripley writer Patricia Highsmith in thriller co-starring Alden Ehrenreich and Olivia Cooke
Image
Patricia Highsmith wrote 22 novels (plus many short stories) and is best known for her psychological thrillers – including the five-book series that followed the character Tom Ripley, who has been brought to the screen several times over the decades, most recently in a Netflix series called Ripley. Now, Variety has revealed that Highsmith and her Ripley stories are at the center of a thriller called Switzerland, which stars Helen Mirren (1923) as the author and is now filming in Rome, Italy.

Mirren is joined in the cast by Alden Ehrenreich (Oppenheimer) and Olivia Cooke (House of the Dragon).

Based on a play by Joanna Murray-Smith, who has also written the screenplay, Switzerland tells a fictional story that sees Mirren playing Highsmith at a time when the aging queen of thrillers is fading away in Switzerland. The hotly anticipated film – which takes its cue from Highsmith’s Tom Ripley novels – marks the first feature in more than nine years from the Dutch photographer-turned-director. Andrew Scott Transforms into an Elusive Antihero in Ripley
Image
Even for an actor as skilled as Andrew Scott, playing a character as infamous as poses a serious creative challenge. Since the release of Patricia Highsmith’s now canonical 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the elusive, murderous grifter has become a fixture in . He’s headlined multiple novels and movie adaptations — meaning that almost everyone is acquainted with at least one incarnation of Tom Ripley.

Even so, in writer-director Steven Zaillian’s eight-episode miniseries Ripley, the Irish actor manages to deliver the definitive portrayal of the literary schemer — a sociopath who is an expert at self-preservation, a man seemingly driven by overwhelming desire, envy, and greed. As Scott developed his approach to the tight-lipped character, he says it was vital to forget about Tom’s formidable reputation and focus instead on how such a man might realistically move through the world.

“I think what’s gripping about the show is...

The Penguin Showrunner Reacts to Fan Theory About 1 Character's True Identity
Image
HBO's The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc has reacted to a popular fan theory about one of the show's characters. Many have speculated that Theo Rossi's Dr. Julian Rush is actually a version of DC Comics' Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow, one of Batman's most enduring villains.

In The Penguin, Rossi's character, an Arkham psychiatrist, is an ally of Christina Millioti's Sophia Falcone, a former patient of his. In Episode 4, a strange scarecrow-like mask and a needle-finger glove can be seen in Julian's office, with many fans believing they hinted at the character's true identity and source material origin. LeFranc was recently on the Golden Globes carpet where she addressed if Dr. Julian Rush was indeed the ReevesVerse's version of Scarecrow. "Well, I can say he's not the Scarecrow," she said, dousing hopes fans will get to see Rossi don the mask and unleash his fear toxin on Gotham City.

Daniel Fienberg’s Top 10

With the entire entertainment industry in a worrisome lull in the aftermath of years interrupted by Covid and the dual guild strikes, much of the conversation about television in 2024 focused on brands and IP, familiar titles presented to viewers with all of the strategy of an inebriated gnu playing darts.

Did we need TV shows ostensibly based on Dune and The Batman but really emulating Game of Thrones and The Sopranos? Maybe!

Did we need a college-set version of Cruel Intentions comparing fraternity and sorority life to fascism? Nah.

Did we need a new version of Matlock built around the twist that it wasn’t really a new version of Matlock at all? Huh. We did!

It turned out, though, that 2024 might be better remembered as the year that put the “intellectual” back in “intellectual property,” as creators went back to the most venerable source material of all: books!

'Playing Him Was Indulgent': Jude Law Names the Role He Wants to Revisit Most
Image
Jude Law reflected on an impressive career of acclaimed films and performances. This is highlighted early on by The Talented Mr. Ripley, where he played the eccentric multimillionaire Dickie Greenleaf.

The Talented Mr. Ripley was a milestone in Jude Law's career, then already established by 1997's Gattaca and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. He appeared in a handful of other films at that point, but he saw his craft as a privilege while playing Richard "Dickie" Greenleaf. Law's performance earned him an Oscar nod for Best Supporting Actor; this confirmed he had lead actor potential, which led to a Best Actor nomination for Cold Mountain in 2003. In an interview with Collider, Law looked back at an impressive run, asserting The Talented Mr. Ripley is the one film he would love to revisit.

The shocking ending of Saltburn reveals the true intentions behind Oliver Quick's obsession with Felix Catton and the luxurious Saltburn estate. Ollie (Barry Keoghan) is introduced as a lonely outcast at the prestigious Oxford University who becomes unlikely friends with the larger-than-life Felix (Jacob Elordi) and his socially elite friends. Transfixed by Felix's carefree lifestyle and effortless ability to get everything he wants, Ollie devises a master plan of winning Felix over, which is fully revealed in the final moments of Emerald Fennell's provocative dark thriller.

Saltburn is the sophomore directorial effort by Fennell, who rose to prominence as a director with her Oscar-winning 2020 film Promising Young Woman which stars Carey Mulligan. The film has apparent similarities to the plot of Anthony Minghella's 1999 classic The Talented Mr. Ripley, in which Matt Damon's con artist protagonist Tom Ripley becomes enamored...

In 2014, the current movie franchise kicked off, with Ben Whishaw voicing the eponymous bear. Although the Paddington movies are obviously centered on the adorable British bear, another major aspect of the films are the villains. Dakota Fanning's new whodunnit limited series The Perfect Couple is a great reminder to watch her other great Netflix series from earlier this year. Released on Netflix on September 5, 2024, The Perfect Couple has a great cast led by stars Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Jack Reynor, and Dakota Fanning. Image
Steve Zaillian garnered an Emmy Award on Sunday for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Netflix’s Ripley.

In his speech, Zaillian said he was enamored by the beautiful landscapes that Italy provided, alongside being grateful for his cast and crew. “Making Ripley in Italy was its own reward. It was like a dream. I didn’t need anything after that,” the director said. “The work is its own reward and I still really appreciate this honor though, and I share it with literally hundreds of people who worked on Ripley, the actors, Andrew [Scott], Dakota [Fanning], Elliot [Sumner], Johnny [Flynn], Maurizio [Lombardi], and all the other wonderful Italian actors, the producers, the incredible department heads and crew—all of ’em artists in their own right. I thank them. The Academy, Netflix and my family.”

Image
“Baby Reindeer” has been on an upward trajectory since its quiet premiere in April, and that is reflected in this 2024 Emmy lineup for Best Limited/Movie Writing. Not only is Richard Gadd expected to win here, but he’s also nominated for producing and starring in the Netflix limited series. It’s one of two full showings nominated in this category and is the only autobiographical series represented. The other nominees stem from “Ripley,” “Black Mirror,” “Fargo,” “Fellow Travelers” and “True Detective: Night Country.” With Gadd’s odds looking steady for both Best Limited Series and Best Limited/Movie Actor, will he also pull off a victory in the writing category?

Here are Gold Derby’s current Best Limited/Movie Writing Emmy 2024 racetrack odds:

1. “Baby Reindeer” (Richard Gadd) — 10/3 odds

2. “Ripley” (Steven Zaillian) — 9/2 odds

5 Matt Damon Movies That Do Not Get the Love They Deserve
Image
When it comes to Hollywood’s top names, Matt Damon definitely fits the bill. He’s been in the game for a long time, having kicked off his career at a young age. By the 1990s, he was already considered one of the rising stars, right up there with Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo DiCaprio. As the years went by, he gained even more recognition, starring in films that are still iconic today.

Damon dives into a range of genres, though he’s best known for his action films. Over his career, he’s been nominated for numerous awards and even won an Oscar and a Golden Globe. Despite this, there are still a few of his films that haven’t gotten the attention they deserve and could definitely use more spotlight and reviews.

Sorry Matt Damon and Andrew Scott, but This Is Still the Best Tom Ripley Ever
Image
The author Patricia Highsmith's most well-known character is Tom Ripley, a character who is both rather likable and a steely, psychopathic, cold-blooded killer. Ripley has appeared in countless film adaptations, television series, and radio broadcasts that have featured some of the greatest actors working in the industry. Most famously, Matt Damon starred as the character in Anthony Minghella's luscious The Talented Mr. Ripley from 1999. Dennis Hopper filled the character's shoes in 1977 in the neo-noir The American Friend by German auteur Wim Wenders. John Malkovich came to encounter Ripley when he starred as the character in 2002's Ripley's Game directed by Liliana Cavani, and character actor Barry Pepper took on the character in 2005's Ripley Under Ground from director Roger Spottiswoode. This year, Andrew Scott even starred as the cold-blooded killer in the Netflix series Ripley.

How Steve Zaillian’s Caravaggio Passion Became Tom Ripley’s Obsession
Image
As far as TV and movie adaptations go, Steven Zaillian’s limited series “Ripley” is fairly faithful to Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley novels. In particular, the writer/director was keen to capture the sinister and dark tone of Highsmith’s portrayal of Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), a conman who proves capable of two murders, and lies with the skill of a sociopath. To further explore this aspect of the character, Zaillian did introduce one particularly bold stroke of his own: The 16th-century Italian painter Caravaggio.

“The Caravaggio references are not in the book,” said Zaillian, while on IndieWire’s Toolkit podcast. “That’s based on when I first went to Italy [in the early ‘80s]. That’s when I discovered Caravaggio and I was fascinated with his paintings. And then did the same thing [as Tom in “Ripley”], I started reading about his life.”

As Zaillian sat down to write the “Ripley” scripts, it felt natural to...

Inside the Black-and-White Look of ‘Ripley’: Luxury, Danger and a Whole Lot of Stairs
Image
Almost 35 years ago, production designer David Gropman worked on a Merchant Ivory World War II-era drama called “Mr. & Mrs. Bridge,” in which the opening sequence was in black and white. He still remembers watching dailies to that sequence and hearing director James Ivory exclaim, “What have I been waiting for all these years? It works so much better in black and white!”

“He was right,” Gropman said, laughing. “And I have longed to do a black-and-white film since then.” He finally got his wish with “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s Netflix limited series based on the Patricia Highsmith novel “The Talented Mr. Ripley” — although Gropman estimates that the eight-episode, seven-hour series was really “about five films” in scale and complexity.

The action begins in New York in the early 1960s and then moves to Italy’s Amalfi Coast, where a petty criminal named Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) has been tasked...

Alain Delon Dies Aged 88
Image
It is with great sadness that we report legendary French actor Alain Delon has died at the age of 88. Widely hailed as the most beautiful movie star of all time thanks to his ocean blue eyes and statuesque, sculpted cheekbones, Delon — star of Le Samourai, Plein Soleil, Rocco And His Brothers and much, much more — brought an insouciant cool to cinema on- and off-screen, and an ineffable capacity to convey the depths of a brooding soul in the level of those self-same eyes. Delon passed away at his home in Douchy, surrounded by his three children and family, on 18 August.

Born on 8 November 1935 to cinema projectionist (and later La Régina cinema director) father François Fabien Delon and pharmacist and cinema usher mother Édith Marie Suzanne Arnold, you could say that the movies ran in Alain Fabien Maurice Marcel Delon's blood. After a turbulent series of school expulsions, spells in prison,...

Steve Zaillian Career Retrospective: The Creator of Ripley on His Greatest Hits
Image
Over the course of his nearly 40-year career, Steven Zaillian has reinvented himself almost as many times as Tom Ripley, the indelible lead character of his latest project, Ripley. He’s written films about erudite cannibals, baseball statisticians, American gangsters, serial killers, and chess prodigies. “Each time I go out, I feel like I’m doing it for the first time and that it requires different material, requires a different approach,” Zaillian tells Tudum.

Zaillian is freshly nominated for both writing and directing Emmys for his work on Ripley — accolades that join a healthy group of previous awards (including an Oscar for writing Schindler’s List and a Directors Guild of America award for his direction of The Night Of). He joined Tudum for a wide-ranging conversation about his entire career, from his work on Awakenings to his directorial debut with Searching for Bobby Fischer, and finally to the lavish con...

There Are Only Two Perfect Alain Delon Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The legendary, and legendarily handsome, international movie star Alain Delon passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2024. He was 88.

Delon was best known for playing heavies and tough guys, but he had incredible range, portraying all kinds of roles in his 60-plus-year career. Most American film students have experienced the bolt of electricity seeing Delon for the first time in an acclaimed international hit like René Clément's Tom Ripley adaptation "Purple Noon," or Luchino Visconti's "Rocco and his Brothers" (1960) or the same director's massive historical epic "The Leopard" (1963). Delon made several films with Clément, and was often paired with most of the best European directors of his generation, including Michelangelo Antonioni (he was in "L'Eclisse"), Louis Malle ("Spirits of the Dead"), Joseph Losey ("The Assassination of Trotsky"), Agnès Varda ("One Hundred and One Nights"), and even Jean-Luc Godard ("New Wave"). Anyone with a subscription to the Criterion Channel has likely...

Alain Delon Was More Than Just the Single Most Beautiful Movie Star Ever
Image
Of course he was gorgeous — it was always the first thing you noticed about Alain Delon whenever he appeared onscreen, that otherworldly handsomeness that took your breath away no matter where you fell on the Kinsey scale. The French movie star knew that he was one of the most beautiful people to ever grace the movies, from any country and in any era, with those near-geometric cheekbones and those icy blue eyes; Delon knew his looks opened professional doors for him and opened the arms of women whose company he was happy to keep.

‘Ripley’ Showrunner on Adapting Patricia Highsmith’s 1955 Novel to the Small Screen Over the Course of 170 Shooting Days
Image
In Ripley, Netflix’s dazzling eight-part adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s landmark 1955 crime novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, the approach to the material is more emotionally cold and deliberately paced than in the 1999 movie adaptation. Anchored by a bravura performance by Andrew Scott, the series — nominated for 13 Emmys — was written and directed by veteran screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Oscar winner for Schindler’s List). Zaillian joins THR for a conversation about this ambitious project’s journey to the small screen.

What inspired you to remake something that had already been tackled to great success by Hollywood?

Twenty years had gone by since the 1999 movie. I felt that there was a way of doing this in a longer format that would hopefully capture the feeling that I had when I first read the book.

Was there an essence to the book that you felt had not been captured in the film?

It was...
