Guwahati, April 29 — Rohit Basore, an emerging actor who recently appeared in the third season of Amazon Prime Video’s acclaimed series The Family Man, was found dead on Sunday afternoon near the Garbhanga Waterfalls on the outskirts of Guwahati, Assam, police confirmed. He was 27.

According to Rani Police Outpost officials, Basore was on a picnic with nine colleagues when he reportedly fell into the waterfall at around 2 p.m. local time. Jewel Thief: The Heist Begins has two directors. Neither seem to be around when they are needed the most. The plot seems to be floating on auto-pilot. With a script that seems to be written on a piece of toilet paper, this is possibly Netflix’s worst original motion picture of all times. We can’t tell what’s around the corner, though. There is a promise for a sequel at the end of this film, a promise I hope would be nipped in the bud.

As we can see, heist makes waste. Jewel Thief proves it. It is shocking to believe that something so shoddily written could have gotten past Netflix’s checkpost. What were the approvers thinking? What were the actors thinking? What were Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat thinking when they decided to be part of this bilge binge?

There are bad films, and then there’s something like this, which throws you into existential angst. Has Hindi cinema sunk this low that such capable actors have to do such films — joyless and overtly manufactured and deathly silly-to continue their careers. This film is one of those that everyone involved would likely distance themselves from just a few years down the line. Other than a great offer of money, no other reason justifies anyone choosing to star in this film, especially Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Bollywood used to make fun crime movies. This is the country of “Don,” of “Bunty Aur Babli” of not one but three “Dhoom” movies. Heck, Netflix’s recent “Dhoom Dhaam” (unrelated to the aforementioned franchise) threw its hat in the ring to respectable results. And while those other examples may be from a bygone era of joyful abandon, the current moment leaves a lot to be desired.

In its defense, Kookie Gulati and Robbie Grewal’s “Jewel Thief” does not purport to be any kind of caper, but the self-serious wannabe action drama in its place leaves much to be desired. One can’t fault producer Siddharth Anand for committing to more of the same after the success of projects like “Pathaan,” “War,” and “Tiger” — but those were theatrical releases, unlike this one, and did not star Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat.

What’s Good: Jaideep Ahlawat’s performance, the picturesque locations, and the cinematography.

What’s Bad: The movie is filled with illogical subplots, absurdities, and idiosyncrasies. The dialogues are extremely stereotypical, and except for Jaideep Ahlawat, none of the cast members manage to make an impact. Some of the sub-plots and twists are laughable and cannot even be watched as a guilty pleasure.

Loo Break: You can actually take one during the songs or otherwise, too, because this one does not require you to rake your brain.

Watch or Not?: If you cannot find any worthwhile content on Ott this week, this one can be a last resort.

Netflix unveiled three Indian productions at its Apac showcase in Tokyo, with Rajkummar Rao and R. Madhavan leading the slate of upcoming titles set for 2025 release.

The presentation, led by Netflix India original films head Ruchikaa Kapoor Sheikh, highlighted the streaming platform’s growing commitment to diverse Indian storytelling across languages and genres.

“This year is going to be our most diverse year yet,” Sheikh told attendees. “After the wildly loved ‘Pushpa 2,’ ‘Dragon,’ and ‘Chhaava,’ we have an exciting lineup of some of the biggest theatrical films coming to Netflix in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.”

Currently streaming is “Test,” Netflix’s first Tamil-language original film, a sports drama featuring R. Madhavan, Nayanthara, and Siddharth. Sheikh also talked up the imminent release of “Jewel Thief,” described as a “high octane heist-action film” starring Saif Ali Khan and Jaideep Ahlawat, scheduled to debut within days of the showcase.

The spotlight then turned to three upcoming productions.

In what is a double-first for the versatile Saif Ali Khan, he will be playing a blind man in the prolific Priyadarshan’s next.

Saif has never played a blind man, nor has he worked with Priyadarshan, although both have been in the Indian entertainment industry for about 25 years.

Confirming this development, Saif says, “Yes, I am doing a film with Priyadarshan next. I play a blind guy. It’s very exciting.”

For a long time, Priyadarshan has wanted to work with Saif. They have finally zeroed in on a script that they both like—and it is Not a comedy but a thriller.

Says Priyadarshan, “I’ve always liked Saif’s screen presence. I was waiting for something suitable to do with him.”

Saif will be seen next in Netflix’s Jewel Thief, a heist drama where he co-stars with Jaideep Ahlawat.
