Leonardo DiCaprio Shouldn’t Have Played ‘Idiot’ in ‘Flower Moon,’ Says Paul Schrader
Image
Paul Schrader would like a word, please. In a new interview with French publication Le Monde, the screenwriter — who has worked with Martin Scorsese on iconic films Raging Bull and Taxi Driver — shared his dissatisfaction with Leonardo DiCaprio playing “the idiot” Ernest Burkhart instead of the FBI agent in Killers of the Flower Moon.

“I would have preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in Killers of the Flower Moon rather than the role of the idiot,” he said. “Spending three-and-a-half hours in the company of an idiot is a long time.

"3.5 Hours In The Company Of An Idiot": Martin Scorsese Collaborator Shares Killers Of The Flower Moon Criticism
Image
Long-time Scorsese collaborator criticizes DiCaprio's role in Killers of the Flower Moon, calling his character an "idiot." Schrader finds DiCaprio's performance excruciating due to the movie's length and the nature of his character. Schrader suggests that DiCaprio would have been better suited for a different role in the film, expressing his reservations about the casting choice.

Martin Scorsese collaborator Paul Schrader shares his controversial opinion about Leonardo DiCaprio's acting in Killers of the Flower Moon. DiCaprio is receiving Oscar buzz for his performance as Ernest Burkhart in Scorsese’s acclaimed epic, an adaptation of David Grann’s book about real-life murders in Osage country in the 1920s. In the film, DiCaprio’s seemingly dull-witted WWI veteran marries an Osage woman named Mollie (Lily Gladstone) as part of his uncle William Hale’s (Robert De Niro) plot to gain the rights to rich oil land owned by the Osage Nation,...

Killers of the Flower Moon: Paul Schrader says DiCaprio should have played the cop and not the idiot
Image
Paul Schrader, the writer behind Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Bringing Out the Dead, has something he’d like to get off his chest about Scorsese’s latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Speaking with France’s Le Monde, Schrader says he would have approached the lengthy epic differently, especially regarding casting. While Schrader thinks Killers of the Flower Moon is a “good movie,” he thinks Leonardo DiCaprio should have played the FBI agent investigating the Osage murders. This part eventually went to Jesse Plemons.

“Marty compares me to a Flemish miniaturist. He would be more the type who paints Renaissance frescoes,” Schrader said. “Give him $200 million, a good film will inevitably come out of it. That said, I would have preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ rather than the role of the idiot. Spending three-and-a-half...

Taxi Driver Writer Reveals His Problem With Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon would have been a completely different film if director Martin Scorsese had enlisted the help of former collaborator Paul Schrader.

Previously, Schrader wrote the screenplays for Scorsese's acclaimed films Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, both of which are considered to be among the greatest movies ever made. In a new interview with the French publication Le Monde (per Variety), the writer addressed his relationship with Scorsese and praised his friend's talents as a director. Getting honest, Schrader also admitted that he had a big problem with Killers of the Flower Moon, as he felt that lead star Leonardo DiCaprio had been cast in the wrong role.

Paul Schrader Says Leonardo DiCaprio Shouldn’t Have Played the ‘Idiot’ in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
Paul Schrader
Paul Schrader is back to sharing his brash opinions on today’s movies, this time taking aim at his “Taxi Driver” collaborator Martin Scorsese’s latest film, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

In a recent interview with Le Monde, The screenwriter and director criticized the casting of Scorsese’s film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro.

Schrader shared that he would have “preferred Leonardo DiCaprio to play the role of the cop in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ rather than the role of the idiot.”

“Spending three-and-a-half hours in the company of an idiot is a long time,” he added.

DiCaprio was, in fact, initially cast to play FBI agent Tom White (ultimately played by Jesse Plemons), though it remained unclear if Schrader was privy to that casting tidbit. Early “Killers of the Flower Moon” scripts centered on his efforts to investigate the string of Osage...

How ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Casting Directors Assembled the Osage Nation Onscreen
Image
Casting director Ellen Lewis and head of Indigenous casting Rene Haynes came to Killers of the Flower Moon from very different backgrounds. The former had worked with Martin Scorsese for many years, beginning with Goodfellas. The latter had been at the forefront of casting Indigenous actors in everything from the Twilight series to the HBO film Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, which earned her an Emmy nom. When Killers came around, says Lewis, “I contacted Rene immediately because I had met her on [the Netflix series] Godless and knew that I was going to want her with me on this journey.”

Haynes was first hired to cast extras for War Party (1988). Production brought her to the Seven Reservations of Montana, where she says she “developed this strong attachment to [the Indigenous] community.” Soon thereafter was Dances With Wolves (1990), which she says “heralded a realization that Native characters should be played by Native actors.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the clip, released by Apple TV, shows DiCaprio's war hero character Ernest Burkhart trying to win the affection of Mollie (Gladstone) while they ride around through the streets of Oklahoma. While Mollie tells Ernest he "talks too much" when asking her about her dating life, Ernest jokes about figuring out who to "beat in this horse race" and how he's a "different kind of horse" as he tries sweet-talking her. The Best Supporting Actor Oscar category could see an unprecedented 5 straight years of double nominees
Image
Lately, the Best Supporting Actor Oscar lineup has been seeing double — as in two nominees from one film. That looks likely to continue this season, and if that happens, it’ll mark an unprecedented five-year streak of double bids in the category.

Oscar nuts know this double-dipping wasn’t so rampant until very recently. There was a 26-year drought between 1991’s “Bugsy” yielding noms for Harvey Keitel and Ben Kingsley and 2017’s “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” ending the dry spell with bids for Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. There were no co-star nominees the next year, but since then, it’s been duo after duo.

2019’s “The Irishman” earned comeback nominations for Al Pacino and Joe Pesci. The subsequent year, Oscar voters threw a curveball by nominating both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield — aka the people who played the title characters of “Judas and the Black Messiah” — in supporting.

The projection comes from a newly established tracking service, Quorum, which typically does six-week-long forecasts. "Great American Tragedy": Why Martin Scorsese's New Movie Is Not A Western
Image
Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone explains why the upcoming Martin Scorsese movie isn't actually a Western. After partnering with Netflix for The Irishman, Scorsese has joined forces with Apple for Killers of the Flower Moon, a historical epic based on a book of the same name by David Grann. In addition to Gladstone, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Jesse Plemons, Brendan Fraser, and John Lithgow, telling the story of a series of brutal murders of members of the Osage Nation in the 1920s after oil is discovered on their land.

Ahead of the Killers of the Flower Moon release date later this year, Gladstone, who is Native American, tells Empire for the magazine's August 2023 issue that the film isn't a traditional Western, as many may assume. The Western genre comes with certain tropes and a lot of baggage, the star explains, but this movie,...

This James Stewart Film & ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Use the Same Story
Image
"It was something we'd seen before," is how Martin Scorsese described the earliest drafts of his new film, Killers of the Flower Moon, in an interview with Deadline just after the Cannes premiere. The film is based on a book of the same name, by David Grann, which tells the true story of a series of horrifying murders in 1920s Oklahoma. Most of the victims were members of the Osage tribe, with deaths orchestrated in order to lay claim to the oil-rich land that the tribe held legal claim to. The book focuses on the investigation into the murders, successfully led by Tom White, who was working for the federal agency that would become the FBI. The problem the filmmakers encountered was that White wasn't dramatically interesting, and centering him turned the story into a "savior" narrative. Scorsese was correct when he said this type of story had been seen before.

Martin Scorsese Is Making Another Movie About Jesus Because The Pope Asked for It
Image
As he prepares for the release of his new movie, Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese is already thinking about his next big film project.

The director has one of the widest and most varied careers in all of Hollywood. Although most identify him with gangster cinema and portraits of the darkness and dirt of New York, the reality is that he has made all kinds of films with different stories, including religious dramas, such as The Last Temptation of Christ.

Now, Scorsese wants to dive into that theme again at the request of none other than the Pope, as he revealed in an interview with La Civiltà Cattolica (via Variety):

"I have responded to the Pope's appeal to artists in the only way I know how: by imagining and writing a screenplay for a film about Jesus. And I'm about to start making it."

Released in 1988, The Last Temptation of Christ...

Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Martin Scorsese’s highly anticipated Killers of the Flower Moon, which released its first trailer this week, just had its world premiere at Cannes. Easily the most anticipated movie of the festival, all eyes were on the post-screening reactions, and folks were curious to know if the film stands alongside the eighty-year-old auteur’s best movies. Indeed, judging by the rapturous response (which included a nine-minute standing ovation), it’s safe to say that Killers of the Flower Moon is going to rank with some of Marty’s finest work. So far, the Rotten Tomatoes score is 96%, with only one of the 27 reviews being negative.

The film, which is based on David Grann’s non-fiction book of the same name, centers around a series of murders that took place in Oklahoma during the 1920s. The victims were all members of the Osage Native American Tribe, with the plot an attempt...

Former Osage Nation Chief Praises Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon
Image
Jim Gray, former Principal Chief of the Osage Nation, has some high praise for Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" after taking in a private screening of the film ahead of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend.

Scorsese's 3.5-hour true-crime drama, per the official Apple TV+ synopsis, "is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts the serial murder of members of the oil-wealthy Osage Nation, a string of brutal crimes that came to be known as the Reign of Terror." The first teaser trailer for "Killers of the Flower Moon" sees Leonardo DiCaprio's narrator flipping through a book about Osage culture and history, as he explains in voiceover how the "Children of the Middle Waters," as the tribe is known, "took their name from Missouri and Osage Rivers."

Robert De Niro Slams Donald Trump, Talks “The Banality Of Evil” After ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’ Premiere In Cannes
Image
“Taking risk at this age, what else can I do?” Martin Scorsese said Sunday at the Cannes press conference for Killers of the Flower Moon, which had its world premiere last night here.

The director appeared with stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone and the leader of the Osage Nation, Chief Standing Bear, to talk about how they aimed to bring attention to the atrocities that occurred in the oil-rich Osage nation in the early 1920s, which was in the vicinity of the Black Wall Street massacre.

De Niro drew a parallel to what occurred with the Osage nation to the recent George Floyd tragedy, which took place during the Donald Trump presidential administration. The Oscar winner has often blasted Trump.

‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Review: DiCaprio Gives His Best Performance for Scorsese’s Bitterest Crime Epic
Image
Martin Scorsese may like to think of “Killers of the Flower Moon” as the Western that he always wanted to make, but this frequently spectacular American epic about the genocidal conspiracy that was visited upon the Osage Nation during the 1920s is more potent and self-possessed when it sticks a finger in one of the other genres that bubble up to the surface over the course of its three-and-a-half-hour runtime.

The first and most obvious of those is a gangster drama in the grand tradition of the director’s previous work. Just when it seemed like “The Irishman” might’ve been Scorsese’s final word on his signature genre, they’ve pulled him back in for another movie full of brutal killings, bitter voiceovers, and biting conclusions about the corruptive spirit of American capitalism. “Gimme Shelter” may not have made it into the final cut, but the chugging bass groove...

Killers Of The Flower Moon True Story: The Osage Murders Explained
Image
Martin Scorsese's star-studded Western crime epic Killers of the Flower Moon is based on the grisly true story of the Osage murders. The film will star longtime Scorsese collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, as well as Lily Gladstone, Brendan Fraser, John Lithgow, and many more. At almost three and a half hours long, it will provide a thorough examination of the "Reign of Terror" that gripped Osage County, Oklahoma, and the United States as dozens of members of the Osage Indian Nation were brutally murdered between the 1910s and 1930s, necessitating the involvement of the FBI in its first major homicide investigation.

The Osage murders represent one of the most gruesome true-crime stories in American history, as well as one of the most debased conspiracy coverups of all time. Even now, public awareness remains shockingly low for the number of innocent lives claimed by greed and racism,...

The True Story Behind Martin Scorsese's Killers Of The Flower Moon
Image
Director Martin Scorsese has made some truly brilliant art out of the dark corners of human history, from "Gangs of New York" to "Silence," but "Killers of the Flower Moon" looks like it might be his historical magnum opus. The film, which debuts at Cannes this week and will hit theaters nationwide in October, is based on the non-fiction book "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI" by David Grann, and it tells the story of the murders of dozens of indigenous people in Osage County, Oklahoma in the 1910s, '20s, and '30s.

The actual number of murders is still unconfirmed, because there was a cover-up and some murders might have been reported as "accidental" deaths, but "Killers of the Flower Moon" focuses on the murders of the family members of Mollie Burkhart (played by Lily Gladstone). When Mollie and her...

Killers Of The Flower Moon Trailer: Martin Scorsese Returns With A Shocking True Story
Image
The long-awaited trailer for the latest Martin Scorsese project, "Killers of the Flower Moon," is finally here. The Apple film about a very dark part of America's history is based on the 2017 book by David Grann: "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI." Time magazine picked the title as one of the top 10 non-fiction books of 2017.

It's the story of the Osage Nation, which was resettled in Oklahoma in the 1800s after its people were forced off their own land. There was oil discovered on the new land, however, and it made the Osage Nation very rich. One of the wealthiest members of the Osage Nation was Mollie Burkhart, who married a white man named Ernest Burkhart (played by Leonardo DiCaprio). “I wish I could take a break for eight weeks and make a film at the same time,” Scorsese, 80, said while discussing his narrative process for his upcoming movie Killers of the Flower Moon. “The whole world has opened up to me, but it’s too late. It’s too late.”

Part of this reflection was sparked by ruminating on the moment filmmaker Akira Kurosawa received his honorary Oscar from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg in 1990.

“I’m old. I read stuff. I see things. I want to tell stories, and there’s no more time,” Scorsese explained. “[Kurosawa] said, ‘I’m only now beginning to see the possibility of what cinema could be, and it’s too late.’ He was 83. At the time,...

Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio & Robert De Niro On How They Found The Emotional Handle For Their Cannes Epic ‘Killers Of The Flower Moon’
Image
Exclusive: In 2016, the hottest book in Hollywood hadn’t even been published yet. Circulating in galley proofs, it was the latest non-fiction work from author David Grann, whose 2009 book The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon had recently been filmed by James Gray and produced by Plan B. His new book was another mouthful — Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI — and it proved just as tasty.

Seven-figure bids materialized, with talent attachments that included Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and J.J. Abrams. The deal ended with a statement buy by Imperative Entertainment’s Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas, who went well beyond the bids and took it off the table for $5 million. With Martin Scorsese directing, they would set it up at Paramount, casting DiCaprio alongside Robert De Niro in the most iconic pairing since...

CinemaCon Surprise: Leonardo DiCaprio Shows Up for Martin Scorsese Honor
Image
None other than Leonardo DiCaprio showed up for Martin Scorsese during a special luncheon conversation at CinemaCon honoring the famed filmmaker. Both received standing ovations.

Scorsese is in Vegas to promote Killers of the Flower Moon, from Apple Original Studios and starring DiCaprio opposite Lily Gladstone and Robert DeNiro. Both DiCaprio and De Niro are Scorsese’s go-to actors and each starred in many of his films.

Apple Studios, which made Killers of the Flower Moon, is partnering with Paramount in order to give the film an exclusive theatrical release in theaters around the globe in October following its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival next month. Scorsese’s most recent film, The Irishman (also starring De Niro) was famously released on Netflix after a relatively small theatrical run.

“I’m really thrilled to have a wide theatrical release before it becomes available at home, which is Ok,” said Scorsese,...

Killers of the Flower Moon ‘trailer’ has film fans in hysterics
Image
A new “trailer” for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has gone viral.

The director’s next film, an adaptation of David Grann’s best-selling book of the same name, was first announced in 2018.

Shortly after filming began in 2021, a still was released by Apple TV Plus depicting Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone as Ernest Burkhart and his wife Mollie, respectively.

To date, this image is the only one to have been released despite the fact the film will premiere at Cannes in May. A theatrical and streaming release will follow in October and November.

Twitter user @KevinGeeksOut shared a fake trailer featuring an extended look at the still as the dramatic score of 2001 film The American Astronaut plays.

“I knew what was going to happen but still I laughed,” one person said of the fake trailer, with another agreeing: “I knew it was coming, but I still laughed.

Leonardo DiCaprio's Latest Martin Scorsese Movie Is *Really* Long
Image
Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon" finally has a release date. The long-awaited true-crime film is heading to theaters this October before it eventually starts streaming on Apple TV+, and we already know how long it'll be.

"Killers of the Flower Moon" - which boasts a sprawling cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, newly minted Oscar-winner Brendan Fraser, Robert De Niro, Lily Gladstone, and Jesse Plemons - is based on the bestselling nonfiction book of the same name written by David Grann. It tells a story set in 1920s Oklahoma when members of the Osage Nation were targeted and murdered by a serial killer, seemingly because of the Nation's ties to oil. The string of crimes became known as the Reign of Terror. Grann's book tells the story of how the modern FBI came out of the investigation into those murders.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Clocks in at Three Hours and 26 Minutes
Image
Get ready for quite a ride.

The official running time of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is three hours and 26 minutes, insiders confirm. From Apple Original Films, the Western crime drama, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone, is one of the longest Hollywood movies in modern times, according to data from Comscore.

Scorsese’s last film The Irishman was actually three minutes longer (three hours and 29 minutes), but the 2019 Netflix movie didn’t get a full-blown theatrical release since it was primarily made for the streaming service.

Killers of the Flower Moon is a different proposition. Apple is partnering with Paramount in order to give Scorsese’s high-profile film a traditional run in cinemas across the globe before making it available at a yet-to-be-announced date on Apple TV+. (Hollywood has been buzzing about Killer‘s length after reports that it ran closer to four hours.)

It’s the great director’s first film since “The Irishman,” and Apple gave him a reported $200 million budget to execute his vision. According to one of its stars, it’s a “masterpiece.”

Speaking to Deadline, the film’s costume designer, Jacqueline West, said that while she hasn’t seen the film yet, Leonardo DiCaprio – who produces the film and stars alongside Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons – has, and he told her about it at lunch the other day.

Killers of the Flower Moon Writer Calls Martin Scorsese's Western 'One for the Ages'
Image
Few actor-director pairings are more celebrated than the collaborations between Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese. The duo is next set to team up with Scorsese's other muse, Robert De Niro, to make the Western drama Killers of the Flower Moon, based on the novel of the same name by American journalist David Grann. The film's screenwriter Eric Roth told Collider that the ambitious, $200 million budget movie is going to be one of a kind.

"I know Marty's trying to make a movie that's probably the last Western that would be made like this, and yet, with this incredible social document underneath it, and the violence and the environment. I think it'll be like nothing we've ever seen, in a way. And so this one is, to me, one for the ages."

Apple, Paramount Teaming Up for Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
Martin Scorsese at an event for The 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards (2010)
Apple is coming on board to help finance Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon,” which Paramount will distribute theatrically, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap. However, another individual told TheWrap that there is no deal in place yet.

Apple will stream the film on its platform following its theatrical release. Paramount acquired the project from Imperative Entertainment last June, but was faced with budget concerns when the price tag jumped to $180 million to $200 million after tax credits. According to Deadline, Scorsese shopped it around to studios like Universal and MGM, and streamers like Apple and Netflix.

This follows another big move for Apple after it recently acquired Tom Hanks’ WWII film “Greyhound.”

As Martin Scorsese toils away in the editing room on The Irishman–his long-gestating crime epic starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel, and Bobby Cannavale–ahead of a hopeful release next year, the director shows little signs of slowing down.

His adaptation of Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI, led by Leonardo DiCaprio, is finally confirmed to begin production in the summer with backing from Imperative Entertainment. Based on the book from David Grann, the author behind The Lost City of Z, Eric Roth (Forrest Gump, The Good Shepherd) has penned the script that follows the real-life conspiracy surrounding the murders of people in Oklahoma’s Osage Indian tribe after oil was found on their land.
