Where You've Seen Freakier Friday's Julia Butters Before
Image
The delightful "Freakier Friday" is in theaters this weekend, and it's a wonderful reprise for Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, as the two stars of the beloved "Freaky Friday" remake from 2003 return to the body-swapping formula. But this time they've got company, and it's not just "Weapons" at the box office.

Julia Butters (above left) joins the cast as Harper, the rebellious, surf-loving, teenage daughter of Anna (Lohan), and Sophia Hammons plays Lily, the daughter of Anna's soon-to-be-husband Eric (Manny Jacinto), who just wants to go back to her home in London, so she can study to be a fashion designer. Harper and Lily are completely at odds with one another, and the last thing they want is to become a blended family, because it likely means one of them is going to end up somewhere they don't want to be.

It's that wrinkle that makes the four-way body...

Watch Conner O’Malley Make Tim Robinson Break Character in Hysterical ‘Friendship’ Outtake
Image
Fans of director Andrew DeYoung and Tim Robinson’s “Friendship” will recognize the scene. Craig Waterman (Robinson) is hiding out with his drum kit in the garage, avoiding the welcome home party taking place inside for his feared-dead wife Tami (Kate Mara), when a lost guest played by comedian Conner O’Malley wanders in looking for the bathroom.

The awkward small talk (about everything from the color of Craig’s drums to the ‘70s) between the strangers takes a sharp turn when O’Malley’s character accuses him of having left Tami to die in their town’s underground sewer tunnels: “How does it feel to ditch your wife?”

O’Malley’s subsequent rant in the final cut of “Friendship” is deliciously deranged, but in a 12-minute extended version of the scene debuting on A24’s newly released Blu-ray of the film, it’s evident that DeYoung and editor Sophie Corra had...

Why Ice Cube’s ‘War of the Worlds’ Has a 0% Rotten Tomatoes Score: ‘Hilariously Awful’ and ‘Generationally Bad’
Image
Move over, Steven Spielberg. There’s a new “War of the Worlds” in town.

Actually, you’re probably fine.

A new adaptation of H. G. Wells’ seminal sci-fi classic “The War of the Worlds” released on Amazon Prime in late July, making waves on social media for all the wrong reasons.

The movie takes place entirely on various screens, following Ice Cube’s Will Radford (a surveillance expert for the Department of Homeland Security) as he witnesses the alien invasion from his computer. It currently sits at 0% on Rotten Tomatoes with 14 reviews. The audience score, with more than a thousand reviews, is a mere 14%.

Many have latched onto a text card in the film’s trailer that reads, “It’S Worse Than You Think” as a sign of the movie’s quality (or lack thereof). The trailer itself, which released in mid-July, became a mini online phenomenon for its bizarre tease of the screenlife adaptation.

I Think You Should Leave Gets Season 4 Update Two Years After Last Episodes Released
Image
I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson season 4 finally gets a promising update more than two years after season 3 hit Netflix. Created by Robinson and Zach Kanin, the comedy series puts Robinson front and center, depicting the comedian in a variety of hilarious and outlandish scenarios.

First released in 2019, the sketch show quickly became a success on Netflix, with audiences and critics alike enjoying Robinson's unique comedy style. A 6-episode season 3 landed on the streamer in spring 2023 to critical acclaim, but I Think You Should Leave season 4 has yet to get an official green light.

In a recent interview with Collider, executive producer and director Akiva Schaffer addresses a potential season 4 of I Think You Should Leave, revealing that Robinson and Kanin's busy schedules are to blame for the show not having returned yet. The pair is currently hard at work on an HBO show called The Chair Company.

'I Think You Should Leave' Producer Offers The Most Exciting Update on Season 4 Yet [Exclusive]
Image
It's been two years since Netflix released I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson Season 3 to rapturous praise with a new set of quotable sketches that lived rent-free in viewers' heads. In that time, however, updates have been few and far between for a potential return of the gloriously unhinged comedy series, aside from the occasional affirmation that it's still coming eventually. Ahead of the release of his new The Naked Gun reboot, Akiva Schaffer was finally able to provide some more clarity beyond the fact that the show isn't dead like Corncob TV. Speaking to Collider's Steve Weintraub, he gave some insight as to how much is already written and when Tim Robinson and the team should kick the series back into gear.

When Robinson last spoke to Collider about the status of the series, he couldn't say much other than that he and co-creator Zach Kanin...

If You Know Where to Look, a Tim Robinson Comedy Has Just as Many Layers as a Period Drama
Image
At the start of “Friendship,” Tim Robinson’s character Craig’s favorite place in the world is a beige armchair. That’s how much the world of the film is meant to be ordinary, contemporary, and painfully unremarkable. But contemporary comedies can do just as much work in creating a sense of character and place as more heightened sci-fi or period settings. When Craig meets new-to-town meteorologist Austin (Paul Rudd) and gets an invite to his home, the space feels like it’s been designed to meet Craig’s wildest fantasies of what is cool — because it has.

Rocío Giménez, the production designer of “Friendship,” told IndieWire that the film’s turn into something manic and self-destructive as Craig becomes more and more obsessed with Austin isn’t telegraphed by the design of the world, but all the production design choices put a kind of invisible pressure on the characters to snap.

‘90s Movie Legend, 63, Reveals How He Landed His Role in Denzel Washington 86% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller
Image
After breaking out as a star thanks to his iconic turn as Ritchie Valens in the biopic La Bamba, Lou Diamond Phillips was everywhere. He joined forces with Edward James Olmos for the acclaimed Stand and Deliver, was part of a stacked ensemble with Brat Pack member Emilio Estevez for Young Guns, and would even go on to earn acclaim on-stage with a Broadway adaptation of The King and I. Among his most memorable performances, though, was his appearance in the 1996 war thriller Courage Under Fire, starring the legendary Denzel Washington as an army officer responsible for a deadly case of friendly fire. However, despite having earned Golden Globe and Tony nominations, he wasn't originally a shoo-in for the role of Staff Sergeant John Monfriez.

Over the weekend, Phillips took part in a panel with his old Young Guns co-star Kiefer Sutherland at FanX's Atlanta Comic Convention, where he shared...

‘Friendship’ Review
Image
Stars: Tim Robinson, Paul Rudd, Kate Mara, Jack Dylan Grazer | Written and Directed by Andrew DeYoung

What happens when a bromance goes wrong? That’s the subject of this A24 cringe-comedy from debut writer-director Andrew DeYoung, who wrote the script specifically for its star, Tim Robinson, star of the cult Netflix sketch show, I Think You Should Leave. That show specialised in super-awkward characters, and in other hands, Friendship could easily have felt like a comedy sketch stretched out to feature length, but DeYoung and Robinson carry it through, with frequently excruciating results.

Robinson plays Craig Waterman, a socially awkward office worker who has a good job and is married to Tami, a florist and recent cancer survivor. They have a teenage son, Stevie together, but Craig’s attempts to bond with his son are as awkward as his attempts to bond with his male co-workers.

Things change when Craig...

7 Ways to Tell If Season Two of ‘Digman!’ Is Right for You
Image
It’s been over two years since Comedy Central premiered Digman! with a promo that aired incessantly on Viacom-owned stations and that, unfortunately, sucked.

This ad was so off-putting that it has taken until, well, basically now to learn that I should have gotten on board with Digman! a long time ago. It’s about a passionate archeologist who’s made recovering historical artifacts his whole life’s purpose, and who’s trying to heal from not-so-secret pain, but is mainly a blowhard idiot. The marketing should have made it much clearer that Digman! would appeal to someone who was basically a one-woman street team for Clone High, all about adolescent duplicates of people like Abraham Lincoln and Cleopatra.

Now that the second season of Digman! is premiering in just a couple of days, I’m here for anyone else who may have made the same mistake I did,...

Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson in Friendship (2024)
Friendship Review
Paul Rudd and Tim Robinson in Friendship (2024)
Friendship, the debut feature from Andrew DeYoung, is a film about male connection, suburban ennui and the kind of social awkwardness that makes you want to claw your own face off. It’s also, somehow, a comedy.

From the outside, Friendship feels like it could be filed next to Office Space in the great American catalogue of sad salarymen woes. Like Office Space, it centres around a man whose job seems to involve going through the motions whilst slowly decaying inside. But where Mike Judge’s cult classic skewered workplace bureaucracy with deadpan precision, Friendship veers sideways into a surrealist marsh where male loneliness, arrested development and toad-licking form make up the crux of the story.

Tim Robinson plays Craig, a man who seems like he got left behind when adulthood started requiring emotional nuance. His wife Tami (Kate Mara), recently in remission from cancer and even more recently emotionally checked out of their marriage,...

Will This Summer Finally Mark the Return of the Comedy Blockbuster?
Image
Growing up, there was no shortage of raunchy, goofy comedies I could watch while my mother was too occupied with other things to monitor my content consumption. Euro Trip, Step Brothers and Knocked Up — as soon as their box office run ended, I was watching them on Starz or renting them at Redbox. By the time I was finally old enough to go see all the movies I’d been watching as contraband at home in theaters, there were slimmer pickings. Original comedy releases dropped off and were more often relegated to streaming services.

It’s not that they didn’t exist, it’s just there were fewer options and fewer chances to see them in theaters. There were different Hollywood priorities, namely superheroes and recycled IP. But in the last few years, American audiences have finally started to tire of the superhero shuffle, giving room for some genres to...

Friendship review – male inadequacy barbecued in Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd’s comedy bromance
Robinson is magnificently cringeworthy as a man in thrall to his cool neighbour Rudd in Andrew DeYoung’s film, as divisive as a Vimto-Marmite cocktail

Here is a goofy-surreal comedy from first-time feature-maker Andrew DeYoung, starring sketch comic Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd; it is potentially as divisive as a Vimto-Marmite cocktail. This is a shaggy dog tale of ineffable silliness, operating ostensibly on the realist lines of indie US cinema but sauntering sideways from its initial premise, getting further and further from what had appeared to be a real issue: how difficult it is for grown men to make new friends.

In this case, a beta-male chump attempts to be mates with his supercool new neighbour and you might even suspect that the film’s progressive excursion into stoner unseriousness itself enacts men’s avoidant nature, their inability to find an emotionally intelligent connection with each other. The result...

Casey Bloys on HBO’s Emmys Haul, ‘The Pitt’ Breakthrough and the Future of ‘White Lotus’ and ‘The Last of Us’
Image
It’s a good day for Casey Bloys, whose programming across HBO and HBO Max tallied up a whopping 142 Emmy nominations across 20 original programs on Tuesday morning, setting a record for the newly re-named platform.

But for the HBO boss, it’s the spread of recognition across both prestige series like “The White Lotus,” “The Last of Us” and “The Penguin” — with “The White Lotus” and “The Penguin” bringing in 24 nods a piece while “The Last of Us” scored 17 nominations — as well as the platform’s other offerings — including “Hacks,” which scored 15 nods for its fourth season, and newcomer “The Pitt,” which joined the pack with 13 nominations — that is the most rewarding.

“It’s always a nice recognition of all the creative people that we get to work with and the teams internally, but what was really nice is the nominations were spread across so many shows and so many genres — the dramas,...

Friendship
Image
Friendship is the kind of film that will likely cause a physical reaction when watching: uncomfortably curled up into a ball, head in your hands, peering between your fingers when you feel brave enough. This is cringe comedy through and through, destined to have audiences squirming in their seats as if everyone arrived at the cinema in trousers a size too small — but Andrew DeYoung’s film is hilarious precisely because it is so gleefully deranged, taking full advantage of the well-established comedic powers of Tim Robinson.

DeYoung wrote the leading part of lonely dad Craig specifically for Robinson, and it’s impossible to imagine any other actor embodying this character, considering how well the film taps into his singular brand of awkward humour. Fans of Robinson’s cult Netflix sketch-comedy series I Think You Should Leave will know what his type is: strange men who explode when confronted with...

‘Superman’ Takes Top Spot at Sluggish U.K., Ireland Box Office
Image
Warner Bros.’ “Superman” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £6.9 million ($9.4 million), according to Comscore.

The James Gunn-directed reboot, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan, was below the $15 million opening enjoyed by predecessor “Man of Steel.” The ongoing heatwave conditions in the region appear to be keeping audiences outdoors, choosing sun over cinema, as evidenced by the drop in blockbuster collections, which experienced a decline of 35% week-on-week. The massive popularity of Wimbledon, which concluded Sunday evening, could also be a contributing factor.

Universal’s “Jurassic World Rebirth” dropped to second place with $4.4 million in its second frame, pushing its cumulative total to $26 million. Warner Bros.’ F1” remained in the top three, adding $1.5 million in its third outing for a running total of $21.4 million.

Rounding out the top five were Universal’s “How To Train Your Dragon,” which banked $782,759 in its fifth week for a total of $25.9 million,...

Seth Rogen’s Raucous Adult Animated Comedy Serves Up a Piping Hot Season 2 Trailer
Image
Nearly a decade ago, when the adult-animated comedy flick Sausage Party jumped off the shelves and into cinemas, it’s unclear whether the minds behind it had any idea of just how popular it would become. While Seth Rogen was gunning for a feature-length sequel for years, he eventually got the next best thing — an episodic series. Now, heading into its sophomore installment, today marks the debut of the long-awaited trailer for Sausage Party: Foodtopia Season 2. With favorites like Rogen, Michael Cera, Edward Norton, and Will Forte returning to voice their characters Frank, Barry, Sammy Bagel Jr., and Jack, respectively, the next fresh batch of piping-hot episodes will also feature plenty of new celebrity voices as the boys strike out on their latest adventure.

Things aren’t looking so great for Frank at the beginning of today’s trailer. He’s still (understandably) grieving the tragic loss of his beloved...

'South Park' and 'Digman!' Season Premieres Pushed to Late July
Image
South Park is one of Comedy Central's longest-running programs, with 300-plus episodes full of wild and controversial plots. From animating, and making fun of, pop culture's most trending moments to clips turning into highly-used gifs, the animated show has been consistent with its popularity. It's now approaching its 27th season, but because of a streaming rights battle between creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Comedy Central's parent company, Paramount Global, fans will have to wait a bit longer to watch the season premiere. South Park isn't the only animation on the channel to get its premiere delayed; Andy Samberg's Digman!has also been moved to a later date.

The animation that follows its version of celebrities, who are archaeologists, is heading into its sophomore season. Digman!'s premiere will now air on Wednesday, July 23, at 10:30 Pm, following South Park, which will air in Comedy Central's 10:...

Season 2 of Andy Samberg’s 57% Rotten Tomatoes Animated Comedy Gets an Unfortunate Update
Image
Right on the heels of South Park’s new season getting rescheduled, another animated comedy is being dealt the same treatment. Deadline reports that Comedy Central has shifted the original premiere date of Andy Samberg’s Digman!Season 2. Image
If you’re craving more adventures with Andy Samberg‘s Rip Digman, you’ll need to wait a little longer for the antics to begin. The release date shift for Digman! It’s hard to remember now, but movies used to be funny. And not just funny as a means to an end, but funny as an end unto itself. Like, people would pay money to go see something explicitly because it promised to make them laugh, which is wild to imagine now that jokes are basically just something that Hollywood uses to hide the fact that it’s given up on making comedies. What used to be a proud and reliable genre has since been reduced to an omnipresent tone — a tone so...

Andy Samberg’s ‘Digman!’ Season 2 Premiere Pushed to Follow Delayed ‘South Park’ Season 27
Image
Where South Park goes, Digman! follows — literally.

The season two premiere of Andy Samberg’s Digman! is being pushed out two weeks to Wednesday, July 23, just like the season 27 premiere of South Park. Digman! airs in Comedy Central’s 10:30 p.m. time slot, immediately after South Park at 10.

South Park’s season 27 premiere was delayed on Wednesday. The news came amid a streaming-rights battle between the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and the channel’s parent company, Paramount Global.

Parker and Stone are not happy about the delay, and they made that known.

“In response to the press release from Comedy Central about the change in premiere date for South Park Trey Parker & Matt Stone said — ‘This merger is a shitshow and it’s fucking up South Park. We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow,’” a...

‘Digman’ Season 2 Release Date Pushed Back at Comedy Central Alongside ‘South Park’
Image
The Comedy Central animated series “Digman!” is the latest show to shift its premiere at the basic cabler.

The second season of “Digman!” was slated to debut on July 9, but it will now premiere two weeks later on July 23 at 10:30 p.m. Et/Pt. The move keeps the series in line with the launch of Season 27 of “South Park,” which also recently shifted its premiere date to July 23.

No sign yet that the “Digman!” creators are planning to release a statement to address the move, but “South Park’s” Trey Parker and Matt Stone had plenty to say, particularly regarding the Paramount-Skydance merger. In a statement posted online shortly after the premiere date move was announced, Parker and Stone said, “This merger is a shit show and it’s fucking up ‘South Park.’ We are at the studio working on new episodes and we hope the fans get to see them somehow.

Following South Park Season 27 premiere date move from July 9 to July 23, Comedy Central is doing the same with the second season of fellow animated comedy series Digman!. The series from Lonely Island’s Andy Samberg and Neil Campbell was set to run behind the new season of South Park Wednesdays at 10:30 Pm, and the Season 2 premiere date shift to July 23 reflects that.

Digman! is set in a world where archaeologists are massive celebrities and the coolest people on the planet, with Samberg providing the voice of the protagonist, Rip Digman.

Season 1 of Digman! marked the first to be written and produced by Samberg and Campbell. Rejoining Samberg in the cast for season 2 are Mitra Jouhari as Saltine, Tim Robinson as Swooper, Dale Soules as Agatha, Guz Khan as Zane, Melissa Fumero as Bella, and Tim Meadows as Quail Eegan.

New to Streaming: Friendship, Final Destination Bloodlines, An Unfinished Film, and More

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.

The Annihilation of Fish (Charles Burnett)

Essentially a lost film, legendary director Charles Burnett’s 1999 feature The Annihilation of Fish mostly lived on the festival circuit (and in bootlegs) for a quarter-century until a recent miraculous restoration by the UCLA Film & Television Archive and The Film Foundation. Despite featuring recognizable leads in James Earl Jones and Lynn Redgrave, one bad review from an influential critic (who seemed strangely wary of the film’s tonal risk-taking) was enough to sink its commercial prospects for potential distributors. A mental-illness romantic comedy of sorts, the film has a strangeness that may be potentially alienating to some, but it seems inexplicable, years later, that a work which so movingly wears its heart on its sleeve...

Netflix unexpectedly renews Tom Segura's middling dark comedy series for season 2
Image
In perhaps surprising renewal news, Variety reports that Netflix has picked up Bad Thoughts for a second season. The dark comedy is created by and stars comedian Tom Segura. If you haven’t heard about it, that’s okay. The unusual comedy has flown under the radar for most and hasn’t exactly been met with glowing reviews.

Bad Thoughts has been described as a “dark and twisted” exploration of unthinkable fantasies and blends cinematic storytelling with Segura’s warped sense of humor. The show sees Segura take viewers through a series of dreamlike vignettes where the story inevitably unfolds in a hilarious yet disturbing way. The show covers numerous themes and tones with the connection being the dark side of humanity.

A24 Comedy 'Friendship' With Tim Robinson & Paul Rudd Lands on Digital
Image
Forming meaningful platonic relationships can become complicated as we age, and Andrew DeYoung's directorial debut explored this to cringeworthy yet hilarious effect. With the signature humor of Tim Robinson and the always reliable assistance of Paul Rudd, their new A24 film became one of the best-reviewed comedies on Rotten Tomatoes this year and now, if you missed the opportunity to catch the film in theaters, you have the opportunity to experience the second-hand embarrassment from the comfort of your own home.
