AFI, NYU Take Top Prizes at Student Academy Awards

AFI and NYU won gold medals at the 2023 Student Academy Awards, which took place on Tuesday evening at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in the Academy’s headquarters in Beverly Hills.

The other two gold medals went to international schools, the École des Nouvelles Images in France and Filmakademie Wien in Austria.

Awards were given out in four categories, with up to three winners in each category being revealed ahead of time but the medal placement kept secret until the ceremony. Presenters included “Super Mario Bros. Movie” directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, Student Academy Awards committee chair Peggy Rajski and past Student Oscar winners Brad Bailey, Sujin Kim, Ken Kwapis, Freddy Macdonald, Olivia Peace and Kevin Wilson Jr.

In the Alternative/Experimental category, the gold medal went to AFI student Leo Behrens’ “Skin,” with no silver or bronze medals handed out.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Friday the winners of its 50th annual Student Academy Awards.

The 14 winners were chosen from a total of 2,443 entries from 720 colleges and universities around the world. Those who take home trophies at the student awards are eligible to compete at the following Oscars in the animated short film, life action short film or documentary short film categories.

Past Student Academy Award winners have gone on to receive 67 Oscar nominations and have won 12 awards, with previous winners including Spike Lee, Pete Docter, Patricia Cardoso, Robert Zemeckis and Patricia Riggen.

2023 Student Academy Award Winners Hail From NYU, Columbia and European Schools

Fourteen students join the ranks of decorated stalwarts such as Robert Zemeckis, Spike Lee, Pete Docter, Patricia Cardoso and Patricia Riggen to become student Academy Award winners, the Film Academy announced on Friday.

A total of 2,443 entries from 720 colleges and universities from around the world were entered for the prestigious honor, with recognition in animation, narrative, documentary and experimental disciplines.

All of the winning filmmakers are also eligible to compete in their respective short-film categories. Past entrants have accumulated 12 Oscars over the various ceremonies, with 67 nominations overall.

There will be an in-person ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 24th at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The gold, silver and bronze winners will be announced for their respective categories on that date.
