Dogwoof Grows Sales and Business Affairs Teams as Doc Specialist Expands In Production (Exclusive)

London-based documentary specialist Dogwoof has restructured its business affairs and sales teams as it continues to expand into production.

Former Western Edge Pictures executive Will Kane will join the company as head of business affairs, working closely with CEO Anna Godas and head of acquisitions and distribution Oli Harbottle to grow Dogwoof’s production and financing arms.

Meanwhile, Cleo Veger has been promoted to head of sales, and former Tvf International sales and acquisitions executive Katie Bench has joined as new senior sales executive.

Veger joined in 2014 and moved to the role of sales executive in 2017, and then sales manager in 2019. She will head an expanded sales team across all sales and pre-sales as well as festivals. Bench, who specialized in sales for Latin America, Iberia and Benelux at Tvf, will oversee TV sales in a number of territories. Both executives will be attending this week’s Sheffield DocFest and taking meetings at MeetMarket.

FilmRise acquires Sundance winner ‘Motherland’
Motherland premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and screened at the 2017 Berlinale.

Brooklyn-based film and TV distributor FilmRise has acquired exclusive North American distribution rights to Ramona S. Diaz’s documentary Motherland from London-based sales and distribution company Dogwoof.

FilmRise plans a theatrical release for this summer via The Film Collaborative, while it will have its television premiere on PBS’s Pov series this autumn.

Motherland takes place in one of the world’s largest and busiest maternity hospitals in the Philippines. Diaz follows three women as they navigate through the severe conditions of giving birth there, from jam-packed delivery rooms to overflowing corridors where babies are misplaced and then found.

The documentary had its world premiere at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, where Diaz won the world cinema documentary special jury award for commanding vision. The film went on to screen at the 2017 Berlinale in the specialty Forum section.

As well as the Us, Mor Loushy’s documentary has also sold to a raft of territories including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Dogwoof has sold Mor Loushy’s Censored Voices to Music Box for the Us. A theatrical release is planned for autumn this year.

The documentary, about a group of kibbutzinks whose recordings of intimate conversations with soldiers returning from the 1967 Six-Day war were censored by the Israeli army, has also sold to Canada (Blue Ice Docs); Australia and New Zealand (Jiff); France (Films Distribution); Poland (Against Gravity); Former Yugoslavia (Restart), Italy (Feltrinelli) and Germany (RealFiction).

Dogwoof will distribute in the UK.

All deals were brokered by Ana Vicente, head of theatrical sales for Dogwoof.

Censored Voices world premiered at Sundance and was selected for Panorama in Berlin. It made its Israeli premiere last weekend at the DocAviv festival.

The fashion house documentary has been snapped up in Russia, Iraly and Benelux among other territories.

UK outfit Dogwoof has revealed a string of international sales deals for Dior and I by Frederic Tcheng, the co-director of Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.

The latest set of deals include Benelux (Imagine); German-speaking Europe (Nfp); Italy (Wanted); Russia (Documentary Centre); Scandinavia and Baltics (NonStop Ent); France (Dissidenz) and a world in-flight deal excluding Us, UK and Australia.

The deals were brokered by Ana Vicente on behalf of Dogwoof and further sales deals are expected to be finalised at the European Film Market (Efm) in Berlin. Vincente said there were “only a few markets left to be sold”.

Previous deals have been agreed in Australia & Nz (Madman), Japan (Open Sesame/Alcine), Taiwan (Sky Dig), Hong Kong (Edko), France and Spain (Canal+) where the film has been scheduled to release along with UK (Dogwoof) in March 2015.

Distributor will hold further talks about the doc with buyers in Toronto.

UK-based sales agent Dogwoof has secured sales of Dior and I by Frédéric Tcheng, co-director of Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel.

All rights deals were closed in Japan (Open Sesame, Alcine, Bunkamura); Australia and New Zealand (Madman); Hong Kong (Edko); and Taiwan (Sky Dig Entertainment).

Dogwoof have closed a multi-territory sales deal with NBCUniversal for BAFTA nominated documentary Blackfish by Gabriela Cowperthwaite.

The territories include Asia, Italy, Portugal, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, Scandinavia, Latin America and the agreement was brokered by Ana Vicente, head of theatrical for Dogwoof.

Blackfish was acquired by Dogwoof in 2013 following its world premiere at Sundance. Other territories sold by Dogwoof include German and French-speaking Europe, Spain, The Netherlands, and a multi-territory deal with Netflix.

“This deal is the culmination of an amazing year for Blackfish. It so rewarding to see how passionate Universal feels about Blackfish, which is what we at Dogwoof look for in the partners for the films we represent,” said Vincente.

Documentaries about the effects of the internet on children and a personal account of one of the last remaining dictator states in the world are currently screening at Idfa.

Dogwoof Global has made theatrical sale deals for InRealLife by Beeban Kidron to Canada (Kinosmith) and Australia (Vendetta) and has also sold Dangerous Acts by Madeleine Sackler to Canada (Kinosmith).

Both films are currently in selection at Idfa (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam).

Dogwoof has closed a string of deals for Gabriela Cowperthwaite’s killer whale documentary Blackfish.

Theatrical deals have closed for Germany, Austria, Switzerland (Nfp), Benelux (Remain in Light), Spain (Karma), Iceland (Green Light), and France (Zylo Films).

Arte France has picked up TV rights for France and Germany, Rts the Swiss French rights, Vmma the Flemish, and HBO Europe is to broadcast the film in Central Europe and the Balkans.

Netflix picked up Blackfish for UK, Scandinavia and Latin America, while Jaguar Distribution is to handle airline rights.

Becker is a guitarist who has been living with Lou Gehrig's Disease for the last two decades, since being diagnosed at age 20 while playing with David Lee Roth’s band, but he has continued to record and release music despite his illness.
