Peacock ‘Lockerbie’ Drama Sparks Criticism From Real-Life Victims’ Families
Image
The Peacock and Sky original series Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, starring Colin Firth, has sparked mounting criticism from real-life victims’ families over the dramatic retelling of the aftermath of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, a spokesperson for the Victims of Pan Am Flight 103 group and who lost her father, Frank Ciulla, in the December 1988 terrorist attack, tells The Hollywood Reporter that Lockerbie: A Search for Truth needlessly sensationalized the deadly airplane bombing.

That includes in the first episode choosing to portray the Pan Am Boeing 747 being destroyed by a bomb that killed 270 passengers and crew, including 190 Americans, even if that meant triggering painful memories held by the victims’ families.

“By making the choice to show it (the bombing), making the choice to fill these gaps of what happened on the plane before it blew up, hearing passengers sing Christmas carols, showing the horrific,...

‘Lockerbie’: What’s True and What’s Fiction in Peacock’s True Crime Drama
Image
On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 exploded in mid-air over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing everyone on board and 11 people in the town below. That disaster is where Peacock’s new limited series gets its name, but the show focuses on Dr. Jim Swire (Colin Firth) and his decades long mission to answer major puzzling questions about what happened.

As with all on-screen dramatization, facts must serve the story from writer David Harrower, along with imagined scenes and dialogue, and very true details that feel stranger than fiction. But what are the key details in this case still largely shrouded in mystery? Read on for some key points about Lockerbie, almost 40 years after the attack.

The Trial (and Appeals)

Things get a little in the weeds during the trial episodes of “Lockerbie,” but key plot points recreate what actually happened. Tony Gauci (Frank Crudele) did claim that Abubaset al-Megrahi (Ardalan Esmaili) was in...

The bombing of Flight 103 killed all 243 passengers and 16 members of the crew, and the ensuing crash claimed the lives of 11 residents in Lockerbie. The attack would leave 270 dead in its wake and leave the world shocked as they sought answers to what remains the largest terrorist attack to take place in the United Kingdom.

‘Lockerbie: A Search for Truth’ Review: Peacock Series Is Overwhelmed by Britain’s Conspiracy-Heavy Tragedy
Image
The story of Pan Am Flight 103 is one that continues to haunt much of Britain. In 1988, a transatlantic flight to America exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing all 243 passengers and 16 crew members. Parts of the aircraft fell onto the town and killed another 11 people.

A bomb aboard the plane was responsible for the carnage. The search for answers continues to this day, as American authorities are set to hold a federal trial for the latest suspect in the bombing that created the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the UK. The hunt for justice has left deep divisions between the victims’ families, and one advocate in particular, at the center of this Peacock miniseries, came to represent the knotty and obsessive hunt for the truth.

“How can you, of all people, prepare to be in the same room as him,” a particularly forward prison guard asks Dr.

Lockerbie: A Search For Truth Review — Colin Firth Stars in a Series That is Riveting and Undeniably Powerful
Image
Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is riveting and undeniably powerful. It’s based on the actual events of the terrorist attack that brought down Pan Am Flight 103 on a chilly 1988 December night. The flight set fire to the sky from a bomb over the small Scottish town of Lockerbie, claiming the lives of all 259 people on board, along with 11 others on the ground, from falling debris that unmercifully fell from the heavens, looking like pieces of hell.

While Lockerbie: A Search for Truth occasionally falls into the pitfalls of dramatic clichés often found in true story adaptations, it features two phenomenal performances that stand out. Colin Firth and Catherine McCormack brilliantly portray the rotting core of a family grappling with tragic loss while also conveying the personal toll of grief when it prevents us from moving on and letting go.

Everyone was talking about those shows before the new seasons came out. Even A Man on the Inside, the new Netflix original series from Michael Schur and starring Ted Danson, was more hyped up than the shows we picked for this list.

Let's get the list started with a sneaky good series that needs to return for a new season soon, The Cage!

‘The Helicopter Heist’ Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Based on the Västberga heist, a real-life smash-and-grab incident that is so thrilling that it seems to be taken straight from some blockbuster action flick, Netflix’s Swedish thriller series The Helicopter Heist focuses mostly on the characters involved and the transformation in their lives following the heist. At the same time, the series is an adaptation of Jonas Bonnier’s novel sharing the same title, and like the novel, it follows the real-life scenario pretty closely, especially the operation itself, while adding drama and tension by taking certain creative freedoms. While the characterization is nothing to write home about, it still manages to capture different shades of the lives of the people on both sides of the law, allowing viewers to form a perspective of their own. The ensemble cast, which consists of mostly Swedish actors, performed well according to the demands of the character-driven narrative.

Lockerbie | Trailer released for drama series starring Colin Firth
Colin Firth
Colin Firth will headline Lockerbie, a Sky drama series about the real-life airline tragedy that occurred in 1988. Here’s the trailer.

Rightly or wrongly, the British television industry often uses true life tragedies as the basis for drama. As proven with Gwyneth Hughes’ brilliant Mr Bates And The Post Office, such dramas, when done right, can provoke discussion on a national scale.

The latest true-life disaster to make its way to the screen is Lockerbie: The Search For Truth, which chronicles the aftermath of the horrific events of the 21st December 1988, when a bomb caused Pan Am Flight 103 to crash over the Scottish town, killing 270 people.

The synopsis for the five-part series, from Sky itself, reads as follows:

Dr Jim Swire (Colin Firth) and his wife Pam, who tragically lost their daughter in the Lockerbie bombing, have doggedly pursued justice ever since. The series will see Swire nominated spokesperson for...

The story doesn’t shy away from being brave and showing the hard truths that exist in society, and a few wonderful performances only add a cherry on top.

Ardalan Esmaili as Farid

Easily the main guy in the show, Ardalan Esmaili plays the righteous cop, Farid. Last seen in “A Beautiful Life,” Esmaili shines in his second Netflix appearance. A cop dealing with young kids going off the rails and the backlash of an entire town, Farid stays firm in the moments of madness. Donning a Chicago Bulls...

SkyShowtime Art Crime Drama ‘Codename: Annika’ Hitting International Market Through Mediawan Rights
Image
Exclusive: SkyShowtime’s drama original Codename: Annika is taking its art crime sensibilities around the world.

In one of the few international distribution stories you’ll read this week not directly related to the London TV Screenings, Mediawan Rights has snapped up sales rights to the Swedish-Finnish series.

Mediawan will sell it outside of European streamer SkyShowtime’s footprint, which covers parts of mainland and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, and second window rights within the operating territories.

Codename: Annika stars Sannah Nedergård as Emma Haka, a Finnish art crime investigator who infiltrates an auction in Stockholm during an undercover mission that proves to be more dangerous than expected. She is forced to assume a wild and fiery alias, Annika Stormare, and the lines between the two personalities begin to blur.

“We are proud to add this SkyShowtime Original Series to our distribution line-up, enriching Mediawan Rights’ catalogue and strengthening our international development strategy,...

‘Opponent’ (‘Motstandaren’) Review: Payman Maadi Brings Searing Intensity to Character Study of an Iranian Refugee in Sweden
Image
Milad Alami’s Opponent begins with an Audre Lorde quote: “My silences had not protected me. Your silence will not protect you.” The Black lesbian poet wrote eloquently about the violence of silence, arguing that breaking through silence and speaking out is a radical act, as essential to self-knowledge as it is to communication. The protagonist of this tightly knotted drama — played in a knockout performance by Payman Maadi, churning with rage, desire and pained vulnerability — is imprisoned by his silence, literally wrestling with himself, to use the metaphor that gives the film its bristling vitality.

Maadi plays Iman, who fled Tehran with his family and is seeking asylum in the far north of Sweden. The reasons for that abrupt flight are revealed only later, but there are clues in a prologue that starts effectively with a blank screen and the sounds of body slams and grunts of wrestlers training hard in a gym.

‘Sea Fever’ VOD Review
Connie Nielsen
Stars: Connie Nielsen, Hermione Corfield, Dougray Scott, Olwen Fouéré, Jack Hickey, Ardalan Esmaili, Dag Malmberg, Elie Bouakaze | Written and Directed by Neasa Hardiman

There’s not actually a whole lot of horror movies based on a boat at sea for nearly its entire length. Obviously you have things like Jaws or this years Underwater but they are slightly different beasts. As are things like Ghost Ship or even films like Mary or Triangle, which while based on boat have a threat that is also on the boat. In Sea Fever the threat is coming from a parasite in the sea which keeps the crew of the boat stuck on it for the foreseeable future.

Sea Fever has plenty of things going for it other than how unique it feels. The rusty old boat is a great setting and I very much enjoyed how authentic everything felt. The boat did look old and rusty,...

Interview: Writer/Director Neasa Hardiman on the Prescient Nature of Sea Fever and More
Neasa Hardiman
Writer/director Neasa Hardiman’s Sea Fever had enjoyed a successful festival run throughout 2019, but she had no idea just how topical her tale of aquatic horror would become this year back when she was originally making the film. Sea Fever centers around a marine biology student named Siobhán (played by Hermione Corfield), who is tasked with traveling on a fishing trawler, but quickly finds herself out of place alongside the rest of the ship’s crew. As they travel into unchartered waters, a biological entity takes hold of the vessel, infecting the unsuspecting passengers, and it’s up to Siobhán to figure out just what exactly they’re dealing with before it’s too late for everyone aboard.

Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with Hardiman about her approach to the story of Sea Fever, and during our interview, she discussed exploring the themes of taking responsibility for our communities,...
