“Let’s Do This”: Andrew Cuomo Unveils NYC Mayoral Run As An Independent After Primary Drubbing
Image
“Hello, and unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that the Democratic primary did not go the way I had hoped,” said former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who was recently bested in the NYC Democratic mayoral primary by Zohran Mamdani, a political unknown who energized a young and diverse electorate to emerge as the party’s contender in the upcoming Nov. 4 election.

Conceding the loss after the late June primary, Cuomo praised his rival for running “a really smart and good and impactful campaign.”

However, in a video posted on X Monday announcing his run, the former governor, sounding and looking rather subdued, said, “My opponent, Mr. Mamdani, offers slick slogans, but no real solutions.” He spoke standing in front of some green in Central Park interspersed with handshaking around the city and promised New Yorkers they’d soon be seeing a lot more of him.

Mark Ruffalo Gives “Dumb” Joe Rogan Dead Flowers Over Trump & Ice Abductions Awakening
Image
Marvel vet Mark Ruffalo didn’t quite go full Hulk on Joe Rogan for the pugilistic podcaster’s recent realization that Donald Trump and masked Ice agents’ harsh attacks and rounding-up of undocumented and non-criminal Latino immigrants are cruel and out of control, but the multiple Oscar nominee got pretty close.

“Dear @joerogan. It’s a little late now to pretend like project 2025 didn’t exist and wasn’t the play book all along. You are either not that smart or not that dumb. It’s hard to tell at this point,” Avengers alum and political advocate Ruffalo posted on the Mark Zuckerberg-owned Threads on July 6, with reference to the nearly 1,000 page publication that Trump disavowed during last year’s election and embraced with a vengeance once he was back in the White House.

Having offered up swipes at Elon Musk, Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa), Maga pundit Charlie Kirk...

Right-Wingers Are Losing Their Minds Over Zohran’s Win
Image
That great popping sound you may have heard ripple across New York City and beyond Tuesday night around 10:30 p.m. wasn’t champagne. It was the sound of a thousand Republican heads exploding at the news that 67-year-old accused sex pest and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had conceded the Democratic mayoral primary to Zohran Mamdani, the 33-year-old Democratic Socialist who captured New Yorkers’ imagination with his vision for a more affordable city.

During the primary, Mamdani spoke about his plans to make city buses fast and free,...

Right-Wingers Are Struggling to Cope With the Trump-Musk Feud
Image
Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s bromance appears to be over after the president and the world’s richest man went after each other with a vengeance on Thursday. Trump implied Musk’s opposition to his legislative agenda is the result of Trump Derangement Syndrome, called the Tesla billionaire “Crazy,” and threatened to cancel Musk’s federal contracts. Musk called Trump “sad,” alleged the president is on the Epstein list, and even suggested he should be impeached.

It’s one of the wildest political breakups in recent memory, and, yes,...

“The Girls Are Fighting”: Social Media Can’t Get Enough of Donald Trump’s Messy Breakup With Elon Musk
Image
It was like the Twitter of old on Thursday, as users on the site now known as X reveled at the jaw-dropping and very public “big, beautiful breakup” between Donald Trump and Elon Musk.

The entirely predictable split between Trump and Musk finally came to pass as long festering resentment spilled out into all-out social media fighting. The very catty barbs escalated so much that Musk alleged that Trump’s name was in the Epstein Files, and the president fired back that the U.S. government take away the billions in federal subsidies it gives to Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX.

The unbecoming and unedifying spectacle of the world’s most powerful man and the world’s richest man throwing insults and horrific allegations at each other, predictably, was met by concern and embarrassment for both Trump and Musk supporters, confused as they were by a feud between their two Maga heroes.

Elon Musk Wants to Make Peace With Donald Trump After His Epstein File Claims in a Public Fight
Image
Elon Musk has been gaining a lot of limelight for his stint with Donald Trump — previously in good faith, and currently, in the bad blood the two seem to be embroiled in due to conflicting opinions. Turns out, the world’s richest person didn’t quite see eye-to-eye with the U.S. prez’s domestic agenda bill, which is currently making its way through Congress.

The tensions growing between the two had the matter escalating rather quickly as it turned into a public fight, with Musk even making a grave allegation against Trump about the Epstein files. But it feels like the hot-headed billionaire is finally thinking with a straight mind, as he hinted he wanted to make peace with Trump after Bill Ackman’s advice.

Seth Meyers Drags Trump for Boasting About Stock Market Surge: ‘You Set a House on Fire’ Then Called the Fire Department! | Video
Image
The stock market saw an immediate surge in the hours following Donald Trump’s announcement of a partial pause on the massive tariffs he imposed — though, overall, the market has remained in chaos — prompting the president to brag about the momentary turnaround.

And that prompted Seth Meyers to scoff on Thursday night, dragging the president for boasting about fixing a problem he created.

During his “A Closer Look” segment, Meyers admitted he felt like he was “losing my mind” watching Trump allies claim the stock market chaos was all part of a grand plan by the president, while Trump himself touted a record one-day surge to the press.

“Because you tanked it!” Meyers bellowed. “You set a house on fire. Then you called the fire department, and now you want credit for saving the house from the fire you started. ‘The house is still there, you’re welcome. Yes, a...

Trump Supporters Dave Portnoy, Elon Musk, Bill Ackman Speak Out on Tariffs
Image
Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy is one of several Republicans speaking out against the economic impact of President Trump’s tariffs.

On a live stream Monday, Portnoy, who has been a Trump supporter, railed against the crashing stock market, which he said had caused him millions of dollars in personal losses. However, he also pointed to the larger impact the stock market will have on his business, and media companies generally.

Barstool Sports encompasses sports and pop culture blogs, as well as several podcasts and video series.

“Let’s look at Barstool Sports, alright. This economy tanks. Our advertisers who do business overseas and sell products and advertise with us, they sell less products. It gets more expensive. What’s the first thing they cut? Ad budgets. Ad budgets that we get. Suddenly we’re not getting as much money. Suddenly I have to fire Nate and lay people off.

UnitedHealth Is Sick of Everyone Complaining About Its Claim Denials
Image
Two months after the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson sent shockwaves through the much-reviled U.S. health insurance industry, the company’s parent, UnitedHealth Group, is making aggressive moves to protect its image.

Responding to a slew of attacks online, often coupled with the glorification of Luigi Mangione (who was charged with Thompson’s murder outside a midtown Manhattan hotel in December, and allegedly wrote a short manifesto calling health insurers “parasites”), the company has hired a law firm that specializes in defamation cases. Clare Locke, the Virginia-based practice,...

Bill Ackman Pushing Universal Music Group to Move Listing From Europe to U.S.
Image
Investor Bill Ackman wants to bring Universal Music Group back to the United States, and he says he has a contractual right to do so.

In a post on X, Ackman said that he plans to centralize his company Pershing Square Holdings at the London Stock Exchange and eliminate its listing on Amsterdam’s Euronext exchange. He adds in the post that “Pershing Square has a contractual right to cause Umg to be listed in the U.S. We will exercise this right and achieve a U.S. listing for Umg no later than some time next year.”

Pershing owns about 10 percent of Umg, the world’s largest music label. While Umg’s main office is in Santa Monica, it is headquartered in the Netherlands and has been listed on the Euronext exchange ever since going public in 2021 in a deal that included Ackman’s firm.

Billionaires Take Smug Victory Lap After Trump’s Decisive Win

Republicans won big up and down the ballot in the 2024 election, and so did a key group of supporters: billionaire oligarchs who invested their immense wealth and resources in a red wave.

No one, of course, gloated more than Elon Musk, a top surrogate for president-elect Donald Trump and key megadonor to the Maga cause. Confident at the relatively early hour of 10:30 p.m. Et on Tuesday night, he took to X (the platform known as Twitter when he bought it in 2022) to post a succinct update from Trump...

Univision Moderator Says Kamala Harris Did Not Use A Teleprompter At Town Hall, Pushing Back On Claims By Right-Wing Figures
Image
The moderator of Thursday night’s Univision town hall with Kamala Harris is pushing back on claims that the Democratic presidential candidate used a Teleprompter at the event.

Figures such as Sean Hannity and Bill Ackman have advanced the claim, even though the Teleprompter text was written in Spanish.

Enrique Acevedo, the moderator, wrote on X on Thursday evening, “The prompter displayed my introduction (in Spanish) and then it switched to a timer. Any claim to the contrary is simply untrue.”

Daniel Coronell, president of Univision News, also posted, “The teleprompter that displays a text written in Spanish was a support element for the town hall moderator.”

Did Zachary Levi Just Commit “Career Suicide”? Or Was Endorsing Trump a Lifeline?
Image
Shazam! Star Commits “Career Suicide” — Or Does He?

When Zachary Levi stood onstage at a Sept. 28 rally in Michigan and endorsed Donald Trump, he declared it an act of “career suicide” that would end his chances of working again in “very, very liberal” Hollywood. The crowd ate it up, applauding the 44-year-old Shazam! star for his sacrifice to the Maga cause. But in L.A., there was more than a little head-scratching. Not because Levi was endorsing a convicted felon and adjudicated sex offender — the anti-vaxxer actor has done weirder things than that, like supporting Robert Kennedy Jr. for president — but because lots of folks here had assumed Levi’s mainstream career already was all but dead. His latest big-screen venture, Harold and the Purple Crayon, was one of the year’s biggest box office duds, and his 2023 superhero movie, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, had one of the worst...

Real ‘Megalopolis’ Architect Is Billionaire Bill Ackman’s Wife
Image
In Megalopolis, Francis Ford Coppola’s polarizing box office flop, a futuristic development is the wild utopic imagining of Adam Driver’s protagonist Cesar Catilina, a controversial urbanist who’s invented a newfangled building material called Megalon. To conjure the film’s striking biomorphic cityscape, the director worked with Neri Oxman, a lauded 48-year-old Israeli-American interdisciplinary designer known for her practice in “material ecology.”

Oxman, whose work has been exhibited at MoMA and the Centre Pompidou and who previously collaborated with Bjork on a 3D-printed mask that externalized the singer’s musculoskeletal system during a performance, says on her website that she drew inspiration for the film’s utopian citycape from Manhattan’s pre-colonial pastoral past: “Hills are the remains of skyscrapers and valleys follow the streets of the city grid.” In Coppola’s movie, the alternative-dimension municipality has been renamed New Rome.

Brazil President Lula Says X Ban Shows World Can Reject Elon Musk’s “Far-Right Anything Goes” Agenda
Image
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has said his clash with Elon Musk over social network X shows that the world is not “obligated to put up with [the tech mogul]’s far-right anything goes [agenda] just because he is rich.”

The comments made during an interview with CNN Brasil come after Brazil’s Supreme Court voted unanimously to uphold a ban on X in the country on Monday. Lula’s government had on Friday ordered the ban after X refused to obey court orders to remove profiles that were considered to be spreading disinformation. Brazil also wanted X to name a local legal representative, which had not happened.

“The Brazilian justice system may have given an important signal that the world is not obliged to put up with Musk’s extreme right-wing anything goes [agenda] just because he is rich,” the Brazilian President said on Monday.

Brazil’s courts have been cracking down...

Here Are the People Who Lost Millions Backing Musk’s Twitter Takeover

Elon Musk took Twitter private in 2022, but he didn’t do it alone: The deal was backed by his wealthy allies in Silicon Valley, embattled hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, and holding companies based in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, according to a court document ordered unsealed by federal judge on Tuesday, first seen by the public late Wednesday night.

The list of shareholders was made public thanks to a motion filed by nonprofit group Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press on behalf of independent tech journalist Jacob Silverman, who...

Sean “Diddy” Combs Revealed to Be Among Investors in Elon Musk’s X Launch
Image
After a federal court forced its hand, Elon Musk’s X Corp. has disclosed a list of shareholders for its parent company.

Investors named in the document, unsealed on Wednesday evening, include entities linked to Sean “Diddy” Combs, Bill Ackman, Larry Ellison and Marc Andreessen.

The disclosure stems from a lawsuit filed by former Twitter employees accusing Musk of violating their arbitration agreements by failing to pay them certain fees after he bought the site. It lists nearly 100 groups with a stake in the company, such as Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal al Saud, as well as his investment vehicle Kingdom Holding Company, and Twitter founder Jack Dorsey.

The filing gives a peek into the investors who funded Musk’s $44 billion purchase of the social media platform, widely considered among the most prominent global town squares due to its international reach.

X challenged having to publicly share the names of its stakeholders in the case.

Melinda French Gates Says Elon Musk, Peter Thiel and Other Billionaires Are Not Philanthropists
Image
Melinda French Gates says there is a new generation of billionaire activists who aren’t really philanthropists.

Speaking to The New York Times, the ex-wife of Bill Gates — who recently rocked the philanthropic world when she announced she was leaving the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which has given away nearly $80 billion since it was founded in 2000 by the former spouses — was asked her opinion on a new generation of billionaires that includes Tesla Motors CEO and X Corp. owner Elon Musk, Twitter founder and Square CEO Jack Dorsey, American hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, and PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel.

“[T]he people you just named have not been very philanthropic yet,” she responded during the interview, which was published online Sunday. “They use their voice and they use their megaphones, but I would not call those men philanthropists.”

The Nyt interviewer put French Gates and her ex-husband,...

Housing Crisis Profiteers Are Underwriting the Trump Campaign

In his big debut at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday night, vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance pitched the convention crowd on the faux-populist schtick he’s been honing since leaving his venture capital job in Silicon Valley to run for Senate in the Rust Belt.

“Wall Street barons crashed the economy and American builders went out of business,” Vance said. “As tradesmen scrambled for jobs, houses stopped being built.” He went on: “We’re done, ladies and gentlemen, catering to Wall Street. We’ll commit to the working man.

It was barely half an hour after shots rang out at a Donald Trump rally in Pennsylvania, with the candidate apparently among the wounded, that Elon Musk took to X, formerly Twitter, and formally backed him for president. “I fully endorse President Trump and hope for his rapid recovery,” Musk wrote, sharing video of the chaotic scene. Elon Musk Backs Nelson Peltz In Disney Proxy Fight After Polls Close
Image
Elon Musk is backing Nelson Peltz in the proxy battle for the future of Disney.

Onlookers are waiting with baited breath after the bitter voting to select Disney’s board of directors closed last night, with CEO Bob Iger’s nominees appearing likely to win out. However, that didn’t stop X/Twitter and Tesla owner Musk taking to social media this morning to provide his two cents.

He wrote: “Nelson Peltz should definitely be on the Disney board! He would help reform the company, improve the quality of product and generally serve in the best interests of shareholders, as he has done at many other companies. This would significantly improve Disney’s share price.”

John Ridley Guest Column: Ridley Scott Epic Conjures Fresh Napoleon Complex Cases; Elon Musk, Aaron Rodgers, Bill Ackman Exhibit Signs Of Short-Man Syndrome, Height Be Damned
Image
Editors note: John Ridley is the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave writer, writer-director of Five Days at Memorial, and the Eisner-nominated writer of the DC graphic novel series Gcpd: The Blue Wall. He also hosts with Matt Carey the Deadline podcast Doc Talk, and occasionally contributes guest columns, last of which focused on the dismantling of studio diversity leaders that became popular after George Floyd’s murder.

It’s called a Napoleon complex for a reason.

With the first round of Oscar voting closing out, I spent the long MLK weekend catching up on narrative films I’ve yet to see. Yes. I know. I’m a little late to the party, but my day job of watching other people’s amazing docs has bled into my evenings of watching other people’s amazing narrative features.

Among the films, I watched Mr. Ridley Scott’s Napoleon with our older son.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the notion of Palestinian statehood in a news conference on Thursday, claiming it “would endanger the state of Israel.” But he also invoked geographical language that has become a point of bitter contention as Israel’s continued military bombardment of Gaza continues in response to the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, saying that “in the future, the state of Israel has to control the entire area from the river to the sea,” according to an English translation of the speech from Israeli news channel i24News.

‘A Scary Future for Them’: Elon and Pals Turned Dei into Far Right’s New Boogeyman
Image
Not even two weeks into the new year, and it looks as though far-right agitators have honed in on the scapegoat of the season: Dei, shorthand for “diversity, equity and inclusion” initiatives and policies that can be implemented in workplaces and educational institutions.

Although long included in the litany of vilified concepts that conservatives like to complain about — from “wokeness” to gender fluidity to Critical Race Theory — Dei has taken a new place of prominence after being scapegoated for two incidents that made headlines in early 2024. One was the ouster...

Bill Ackman Is the First (and Worst) Wife Guy of 2024

Bill Ackman, billionaire founder and CEO of hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management, has become a new and formidable actor in the American culture wars thanks to his connections to Harvard University. But by stepping into the fray, he inadvertently took up the mantle of a social media archetype that is awkward and difficult to shed: He’s 2024’s first “wife guy.”

Ike’s Revenge? Ousted Marvel Mogul Looms As Disney Proxy Fight Heats Up
Image
The last time Nelson Peltz and his firm Trian Partners waged a proxy battle against Disney, less than a year ago, they laid out their concerns in a PowerPoint presentation. Disney needed to cut costs, Trian said. It needed to bring back its dividend and get its free cash flow back on track. Disney was “over-earning” at its theme parks, gouging guests and not investing enough.

Bob Iger’s return as CEO in November 2022 and the stock surge that followed ultimately called Peltz off. “This was a great win for all the shareholders. Management at Disney now plans to do everything that we wanted them to do,” Peltz told CNBC in February, announcing that he was dropping his proxy fight.

Indeed, Disney did tackle essentially all of Peltz’s concerns. The company has cut $7.5 billion in costs and laid off thousands of employees. It is bringing back its dividend, and...

Netflix Stock Jumps As Billionaire Hedge Fund Manager Bill Ackman Reveals Stake In Streamer
Image
Netflix rose handily in after-hours trading Wednesday following news that Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital has acquired more than 3.1 million shares to become a top-20 stockholder.

He bought on a big dip. The streamer’s stock has been killed since its fourth-quarter earnings report last week, and amid a series of broad market selloffs tied to interest rate jitters. Investors reacted negatively to Q4 subscriber growth and management guidance. In Pershing Square’s letter to shareholders today, Ackman called that an “opportunity to acquire Netflix at an attractive valuation.” The shares closed down 1.8% but reversed course after hours, up nearly 5%.

“We have greatly admired Netflix both as consumers and as investors, but have never previously owned a stake in the company,” he said, calling the platform founded by Reed Hastings “a primary beneficiary of the growth in streaming and the decline in linear TV driven by its superior customer experience,...

Vivendi to Acquire Amber Capital’s Stake in Lagardere, Sets Takeover Bid in February 2022
Image
Vivendi, the parent company of Canal Plus Group, is set to acquire a 17.5% stake in Lagardere, the French media, publishing and travel retail conglomerate, from Amber Capital in the next few days.

Vivendi will own 45.1% of the Lagardère capital following the acquisition of 24,685,108 shares at a price of €24.10 ($27.27) per share. The company said the transaction will not imply any cash transfers from either party since Amber Capital will keep the funds received as cash collateral from Vivendi.

If approved by regulatory authorities, the transaction will place Vivendi above the 30% share capital and voting right threshold in Lagardere. As such, Vivendi said it will make a takeover bid at the same price, €24.10 per share, for the remaining stake in Lagardère on Feb. 2022. Other shareholders in Lagardere include Arnaud Lagardere, as well as Qatar Holding and Financière Agache, the holding of Lvmh president Bernard Arnault.

Magnolia Pictures Boards Documentary ‘Citizen Ashe’ for Oscar-Qualifying Theatrical Run (Exclusive)
Image
Magnolia Pictures has come aboard the documentary “Citizen Ashe” from Emmy winner Rex Miller and Academy Award nominee Sam Pollard. The nonfiction awards hopeful will be heading to theaters on Dec. 3 in New York and Dec. 10 in Los Angeles, hoping for Oscar recognition at the height of awards season.

Accompanying an Academy campaign, and produced by Dogwoof for CNN Films and HBO Max, the film explores the legacy of three-time tennis legend and humanitarian Arthur Ashe, who broke barriers in the sport and won three Grand Slams. Despite being a top athlete, Ashe struggled with health problems, suffering a heart attack at 36. He contracted HIV due to a blood transfusion that occurred when he had heart surgery, dying of AIDS-related pneumonia in 1993 at the age of 49.

Universal Music Group IPO In Amsterdam Boosts Company’s Value To $53B After Shares Leap 39%

Universal Music Group shares jumped 39% in their first trading day on the Euronext Amsterdam exchange.

The company, which controls artists like Taylor Swift and Drake as well as a vast publishing catalog including the Beatles and Bob Dylan, ended the day with a valuation of nearly $53 billion.

The spinoff of 60% of the music entity had been teased for a long time by parent Vivendi. Heading into today’s public debut, Umg’s share price was set at €18.50 per share, resulting in a market capitalization of €33.5 billion on the day of listing. By the end of day, the market value was €45 billion euros, or about $52.8 billion.

William Ackman’s Pershing Square Capital bought a 10% stake in the company over the summer. China’s Tencent has also accumulated 20% of Umg after two major investments in recent years.

Pershing Square Tontine Holdings, the Spac founded by hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, has pulled out of a deal to acquire 10% of Universal Music Group from French media giant Vivendi.

In a statement on Monday, Pershing Square Tontine Holdings said it had walked away from the agreement, which valued Universal Music at €35 billion ($41B), after the Securities and Exchange Commission raised concerns about the legitimacy of the deal that remain unresolved.

Instead, Ackman’s Pershing Square hedge fund will acquire the holding, Vivendi said. “Pershing Square Tontine Holdings Ltd. (Psth) has informed Vivendi that it intends to assign its rights and obligations to acquire 10% of the share capital of Universal Music Group (Umg) under the agreements announced on June 20, 2021 to investment funds with significant economic interests or management positions held by Mr. William Ackman. Vivendi has decided to approve such request,” said a Vivendi statement.

'Betting on Zero': Film Review
Ted Braun at an event for Darfur Now (2007)
It’s a safe bet that there’ll be a Hollywood dramatization of Ted Braun’s documentary about the machinations of financial titans revolving around Herbalife, the nutrition supplement company that’s been widely condemned as a massive pyramid scheme. Filled with colorful characters easily rivaling those in The Big Short or Showtime’s Billions, Betting on Zero is a well-done if not stylistically distinctive nonfiction effort that nonetheless proves fascinating due to its subject matter.

The film’s ostensible if unlikely hero is Bill Ackman, the CEO of the hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management. In 2012 he took a $1 billion dollar short on...

Billionaire Battle Over Herbalife Captured in New Doc 'Betting on Zero'
William Ackman
For the past four years, hedge-fund billionaires Bill Ackman and Carl Icahn have engaged in an epic battle over the fate of controversial company Herbalife. On one side is Ackman, who took a $1 billion short position on the publicly traded company in 2012, calling it a Ponzi scheme. On the opposite side is Icahn, who stunned Ackman and Wall Street weeks later by investing heavily in the nutritional-supplement company, sparking a Wall Street war for the ages.

The high-stakes drama, which has played out on the business pages, boasts plenty of colorful side characters, including Herbalife CEO Michael Johnson,...

And if you're into box office and how movies might do, come play some of the box office games at EZ1 Productions including their new Pick 5 game!

This Past Weekend:

As expected, Legendary Pictures’ Kong: Skull Island won the weekend, and honestly, the Weekend Warrior’s original prediction of $61.6 million was pretty darn close to the movie’s opening weekend which ended up at $61 million. (Unfortunately, I chickened out on Thursday because my prediction was so much higher than all others and lowered it to $58 million, which was Still closer to than every other prediction last weekend.) Also, as expected (at least by me), Hugh Jackman’s Logan took a 2nd weekend tumble as has been the case with most X-Men movies,...

Betting on Zero (2016)
‘Betting on Zero’ Review: Herbalife Opponents Doc Details A Total No-Win Situation
Betting on Zero (2016)
“Betting on Zero” is not here to make you a believer. In fact, if there’s anything that Ted Braun’s examination of the meteoric, global rise of Herbalife shows, it’s that belief in other individuals is a dangerous task, whether that person is promising financial windfall, long-term stability or thorough justice. It may not be entirely inspiring, but “Betting on Zero” captures the everyone-for-themselves desperation that would make any wronged individual furious, be they jilted employee or frustrated stockholder.

Ever since the prevalence of Amway, multi-level marketing (Mlm) firms have long been the subject of alternating popularity and concern. Companies that base their economic model on recruitment, rather than the maintenance and consumption of inventory, leave in their wake a bevy of unsatisfied former employees, some of whom are highlighted in the “Betting on Zero” clips used in a popular segment last fall on “Last Week Tonight.”

Don Cheadle in Darfur Now (2007)
From “Darfur Now” writer/director Ted Braun comes docu-thriller “Betting on Zero” following hedge fund titan Bill Ackman as he puts $1 billion on the line in his crusade to expose Herbalife as the largest pyramid scheme in history. ‘Betting On Zero’ Trailer: Controversial Docu-Thriller Exposes Herbalife As Pyramid Scheme — Watch
Betting on Zero (2016)
“Betting On Zero,” the documentary that has D.C. lobbyists buying tickets to keep people from seeing it just released its thrilling new trailer.

Writer/director Ted Braun (“Darfur Now”) tells the story of controversial hedge fund titan Bill Ackman, an activist investor on a crusade to expose global nutritional giant Herbalife as the largest pyramid scheme in history. Meanwhile, Herbalife executives claim Ackman is a market manipulator out to bankrupt them and make a killing off his billion dollar short.

The trailer plays like a bona fide corporate takedown thriller, pitting Ackman against Herbalife CEO Michael O. Johnson and investor Carl Icahn. It also features interviews with countless people who have lost their life savings. “They took my dreams, my hope to be successful,” says one man interviewed in the film. One woman wipes tears from her eyes before the trailer cuts to Johnson telling a large, smiling crowd: “You,...

The Plot: Set in a medieval village that is haunted by a werewolf, a young girl (Seyfried) falls for an orphaned woodcutter, much to her family’s displeasure.

The Buzz: Amanda Seyfried has grown on me, more and more as she’s aged. I loved her in Chloe. She’s stunning in Red Riding Hood‘s trailer, heck, everything looks fantastic here. From what I’ve seen so far, I’m entirely sold on the art direction, the cinematography, the high saturation color-push, the entire visual approach. When I first heard this...

Review: Inside Job
Inside Job ****

Stars: Matt Damon (narrator), Christine Lagarde, Glenn Hubbard, Lee Hsien Loong, William Ackman | Written and Directed by Charles Ferguson

The financial crisis has affected everyone, from middle class home owners to outsourced factory workers in some of the world’s poorest communities. Inside Job lifts the lid on exactly how the catastrophic collapse of the world’s economy was not only perpetrated but in some cases actually pre-meditated.

Narrated by Matt Damon, it traces the root of the problem back to the Reagan administration and its policy of deregulation and shows how through the corruption and greed of banks we came to be in the situation we are today.

It uses clearly laid out and well explained graphics to not only explain technical terms like CDOs (Collateralised Debt Obligations), derivatives, and MBSs (Mortgage Backed Securities) but to show exactly how this large scale fraud was accomplished - a...
