‘The Princess’ Review
Image
Stars: Joey King, Ed Stoppard, Alex Reid, Dominic Cooper, Veronica Ngo, Olga Kurylenko, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Fergus O’Donnell, Antoni Davidov | Written by Ben Lustig, Jake Thornton | Directed by Le-Van Kiet

The Princess opens with the title character waking up groggy to find herself locked in a tower with only vague memories of how she got there. Within minutes she has to deal with a pair of soldiers with ill intent, both of whom she quite violently dispatches with moves that include a lethal kick and a hairpin through the eye.

As that probably told you, The Princess tosses all notions of historical accuracy, or any kind of accuracy really right out the window. Director Le-Van Kiet takes Ben Lustig (The Thirst) and Jake Thornton’s script and runs with it. After his last two films, he knew he needed to repeat the success of his last hit, the female-fronted action film Furie.

The Princess Review
In most stories, a princess trapped in tower will need a man to save her. Joey King’s unnamed Princess isn’t like that. Furie director Le-Van Kiet’s actioner attempts to take a female lead and invert The Raid, with her facing off against a seemingly unending phalanx of enemies as she descends the tower where she’s being held captive, prior to her wedding to the evil and ambitious Julius (Dominic Cooper).

Initially, the presence of Joey King and the fact that this film (in the UK) would be launching on Disney+ made me think it would essentially be Enchanted with swords; a stereotypical Disney princess finally fighting back violently. Kiet and writers Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton lean into this a little in the film’s opening, which springs The Princess’ fighting skills on us when guards come to her room. Even here though, there’s an immediate retreat from anything cartoony,...

‘The Princess’ Review: Joey King Tosses Fairy-Tale Values Out the Window
Image
Practically everybody in “The Princess” has a name, except the princess. Played by “The Kissing Booth” cutie Joey King as an anything-but-passive heroine, the movie’s anonymous eponymous protagonist isn’t a proper character so much as a one-dimensional empowerment symbol: “The Princess” represents the antithesis of every fairy-tale damsel who sat around waiting to be whisked away or married off. She begins the movie locked in the top floor of the castle, wearing a wedding dress and iron shackles, and ends it drenched in more blood than Stephen King’s Carrie, some of it hers, but most belonging to all the men who’ve underestimated her.

Over the course of the next hour and a half, “The Princess” hardly stops to catch its breath. Whatever Disney movies may have led you to believe about royals named Ariel (she sings!) and Belle (she reads!), this one learned Krav Maga behind her father’s back,...

Viaplay Lightens Tone With Latest Original Film By Greenlighting Swedish Romcom ‘R.S.V.P.’
Image
Exclusive: Viaplay has lightened the tone of its originals slate with the greenlight of R.S.V.P., a Swedish romcom featuring The Emigrants star Lisa Carlehed as lead.

Airing later this year and based on award-winning Danish feature Long Story Short, the Nent streamer’s latest spans four years and is structured around nine chapters, each of which focuses on a different holiday celebration. At the center of the narrative is Klara (Carlehed), a 37-year-old single nurse whose perpetual search for love is increasingly causing her to question whether it even exists.

Miso Film, who last week revealed it had signed former Dr Head of Drama Christian Rank, is producing, award-winning Jordskott actor Moa Gammel is directing and Ella Lemhagen is writing.

Alongside Carlehed, who was recently nominated for Best Actress at Sweden’s Guldbagge Awards for Erik Poppe’s The Emigrants, the film features Oscar Töringe (Thin Blue Line...

The gritty crime drama, centered on the subject of the death penalty, is the second Roslund & Hellström novel to become a Viaplay Original after the drama Box 21. The series will feature a Nordic cast and will premiere exclusively on Nent Group’s Viaplay streaming service in 2022.

In Cell 8, a man presumed dead is arrested on a ferry between Sweden and Finland, throwing detectives Mariana Hermansson (Mimosa Willamo) and Ewert Grens (Leonard Terfelt) into a mysterious and increasingly dark series of events. Hitman's Bodyguard 3 Is Already Being Teased by the Director
Image
With the release of comedy action sequel Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard now imminent following several delays, both its star Salma Hayek and the man behind the camera, Patrick Hughes, have teased plans for a third movie in the franchise. Though they refuse to reveal who, it sounds like the plan is to add another player into the mix, much like the upcoming follow-up does with Hayek's Sonia Kincaid.

"I hope so. If it happens, I know they're adding one more person," Hayek responded when asked whether a third movie was on the cards. Hughes meanwhile admitted that he already has a pretty good idea of who could join a third outing, but sadly would not reveal who as it would spoil things. "I can't say that because it will reveal the plot," he replied. When pressed on the matter though, Hughes was at least willing to make a joke saying, "John Candy,...

Salma Hayek Ruins Ryan Reynolds' Vacation in Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard Sneak Peek
Image
Ryan Reynolds' summer vacation is rudely interrupted by a gun-wielding Salma Hayek in this new clip from upcoming comedy sequel Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard. Suddenly pulled out of his holiday zen and thrown headfirst into the action, the clip is likely indicative of the kinds of explosive sequences and playful banter that audiences can expect from the rest of the highly anticipated movie.

The clip also demonstrates Salma Hayek's solution to a Ryan Reynolds freak-out, a firm slap to the face, something which the latter has discussed before. "In Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, I'm slapped in the face twice by Salma and once by Samuel L. Jackson," Reynolds said. "For the record, it was Salma who didn't pull the punches. Not even once. I can still feel the sharp sting of her tiny hand working its way into my soft Hollywood cheekbones. May God have mercy on her soul."

Released in 2017, the...

One Final 'Lullaby' Trailer for 'The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' Sequel
Anne Archer, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Garrett Hedlund, Jennifer Hudson, and Jessica Brown Findlay in Lullaby (2014)
"Let's go do what we do and blow some things up!" Lionsgate + Millennium have released one final kooky "Lullaby" trailer for The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (otherwise known as Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard without the "the"), another action movie sequel arriving this summer. We've posted two other fun trailers before this one. This crazy trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman villain played by Antonio Banderas. Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson return, with a huge cast including Salma Hayek, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front, Gabriella Wright, Alice McMillan, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Tom Hopper, Blake Ritson, and featuring Richard E. Grant. This is the kind of amusing, ridiculous marketing that's actually going to get people back into theaters to watch this - hell yes, Lionsgate. Here's the final "Lullaby" trailer for...

New Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard Trailer Goes Wild with One Killer Threesome
Image
A new trailer for upcoming action-comedy sequel Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard throws us back into a world of explosive shoot-outs and adrenaline-fueled car chases as mismatched duo Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson trade barbs and fight to survive. As the title and new poster suggest, the sequel sees Salma Hayek's Sonia Kincaid given a much bigger role than the previous installment, joining the action-packed fray and turning the bantering duo into a trio.

Picking up four years after the events of the original movie, bodyguard Michael Bryce (Ryan Reynolds) is on a company mandated sabbatical when Sonia Kincaid, the wife of hitman Darius Kincaid whom Bryce shares an uneasy friendship with, rescues him from an assassination attempt to rescue Darius. Still unlicensed and under scrutiny, as well as now being on sabbatical, Bryce is not allowed to use firearms or lethal weapons of any kind and must use...

Action Comedy Sequel 'The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard' Full Trailer
Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Salma Hayek, Samuel L. Jackson, and Ryan Reynolds in Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (2021)
"Now let's go do what we do - and blow some things up!" Lionsgate + Millennium Media have debuted the full-length official trailer for the summer's The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard (also known as Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard without the "the"), a sequel to that action movie a few years ago. The wacky odd couple is still completing missions, but this time they get entangled with Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek. The trio get in over their heads in a global plot and soon find that they are all that stand between Europe and a vengeful and powerful madman villain played by Antonio Banderas. Ryan Reynolds & Samuel L. Jackson return, with a kick ass cast including Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front, Gabriella Wright, Alice McMillan, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Tom Hopper, Blake Ritson, and featuring Richard E. Grant. This looks like fun, but only because it's formulaic action movie fun; even the jokes are obvious.

‘Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Trailer: Ryan Reynolds, Samuel L. Jackson & Salma Hayek Make A Killer Threesome

Plus, there’s the supporting cast, Antonio Banderas, Morgan Freeman, Frank Grillo, Caroline Goodall, Rebecca Front, Gabriella Wright, Alice McMillan, Kristofer Kamiyasu, Tom Hopper, Blake Ritson, with Richard E.

Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ Trailer: Ryan Reynolds Goes on a ‘Sabbatical’ From Killing (Video)
Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Ryan Reynolds is trying really hard not to kill anyone in the first trailer for “The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard.” In fact, he’s on a doctor-mandated psychological “sabbatical” from doing any work as a gun for hire.

That, of course, doesn’t stop him from getting into obscene fire fights and running for his life, this time while trying to protect not just Samuel L. Jackson’s hitman Darius Kincaid, but also Kincaid’s wife: the infamous, international con artist Sonia Kincaid, played by Salma Hayek.

“I promised my therapist no bodyguard. So that means no guns, no killing and no blood,” Reynolds says in the trailer as he attempts to subdue a bad guy.

“Are you using pepper spray?” Jackson responds before erupting into a laughing fit.

Patrick Hughes is returning to direct the sequel to 2017’s “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” as is screenwriter Tom O’Connor, who wrote the story...

Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard Trailer Arrives, Get Ready for the Reunion of the Summer
Image
The first trailer for Lionsgate's action-comedy sequel Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard is now online, and reintroduces audiences to Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson's delightful odd couple. Teasing all the chases sequences, shoot-outs and Reynolds zingers you could want, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard looks to be a fan-pleasing continuation of the 2017 hit.

The first Hitman's Bodyguard follows Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds as the world's top protection agent, Michael Bryce, whose career has taken a steep decline following a bungled mission. Reynolds' relentless bodyguard and Jackson's manipulative assassin, Darius Kincaid, have been on the opposite end of the bullet for years and butt heads as they are thrown together for a wildly outrageous 24 hours.

Set four years after the events of the original, Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard puts the spotlight back onto the world's most lethal odd couple - bodyguard Michael Bryce and hitman Darius Kincaid, played once again by Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L.

‘Knocking’ Review: Stylish Swedish Gaslighting Thriller Keeps Its Protagonist on Edge, But Not the Audience
Image
The word “gaslighting” is so broadly used these days — its definition, in some quarters, having evolved into a synonym for “lying” — it’s almost reassuring to see a psychological thriller that cleaves to its original sense. No one else gets much reassurance, however, in “Knocking”: a Swedish creeper that, as in “Gaslight” nearly 80 years ago, sees a frail female protagonist’s mental health history weaponized against her, making her question her grip on a possibly sinister reality.

Painted in sweat and lit low in dusty browns and rich, fermented yellows, Frida Kempff’s stylish debut feature initially imbues its old-school premise with enough needling atmosphere to suggest something unnerving and unexpected afoot. The surprise, then, is its lack thereof. “Knocking” may tweak its familiar premise for a #MeToo-era critique of society’s inclination to disbelieve women, but never quite pulls the rug out from under us: Crisply made and gutsily performed as it is,...
