TV News Faces Creator Chaos as Anchors Chase Digital Dreams That Bring Big Bucks (or Return Little Reward)
Image
When Don Lemon parted ways with CNN in 2023, he left armed with a few qualities that were bound to serve him in good stead. He was one of the most recognized anchors in the country, and he knew what it took to stand apart from the rest of the TV news pack.

As he dipped his toes into independent, digital media, however, he realized he was just a rookie who had to develop new skills — and fast. Lemon rented studio space “in the heart of Manhattan,” but quickly found viewers wanted to see him in a more authentic venue, like in his living room with the fireplace lit. Early in his tenure, Lemon secured what in the traditional news business would be considered a big “get” — a one on one interview with tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, whose social-media platform, X, had just agreed to distribute a new Lemon program. After...

Oliver Darcy Aims to Expand ‘Status’ Newsletter With ‘Power Lines’ Podcast
Image
Ever since journalist Oliver Darcy launched the media-industry newsletter “Status” in August of last year, he has relied on a take-no-prisoners demeanor and a bevy of intriguing scoops about the business.

Now he’s ready to see if it will translate to podcasting and video.

“Power Lines,” a new podcast and videocast based on the reporting and analysis of Darcy and his colleague Jon Passantino, will launch July 11, with new episodes debuting early each subsequent Friday. The duo will offer “our reporting, our trademark sharp-edged analysis,” says Darcy in a recent interview. “We are not sparing any egos or anything like that.”

In less than a year, “Status” has become a go-to resource for media-industry aficionados, and Darcy has been first to report on eyebrow-raising incidents ranging from accusations about former New York writer Olivia Nuzzi and her relationship with now-hhs Secretary Robert Kennedy after she wrote a profile of him to,...

Ex-msnbc Host Joy Reid Issues Dire Warning About 2026 Election
Image
Joy Reid has spoken out about the future of elections in the United States, saying she thinks the 2026 elections will be rigged and that President Donald Trump intends to remain in office until he dies. The former MSNBC host spoke on Thursday (July 3) with Wajahat Ali on Ali’s substack The Left Hook, where she said she thinks it’s “insane” how people believe future elections will be in any way “fair” or “normal.” “Whenever Democrats say to me… ‘we have to coalesce for 2026,’ I always add to the end of their sentence… ‘Yeah, assuming we actually have free and fair elections,’” Reid said, per Mediaite. “I think it’s insane, honestly, to just assume we’re going to have normal elections next year.” Reid’s warnings come after Republican members of Congress passed Trump’s “big, beautiful” budget bill last week despite many airing concerns in recent weeks. “To me,...

Joy Reid Found Out She’d Been Fired From MSNBC After Reading About It In A Blog Post
Image
Liberal political commentator Joy Reid revealed that she had been fired from MSNBC after reading a news article that was published days before her termination.

On Feb. 23, Reid was fired by MSNBC’s new president, Rebecca Kutler, who was hoping to shake up the lineup after a ratings slide at the time.

Her show, The ReidOut, was also canceled by the network.

On Tuesday, Reid admitted to discovering she had been fired during an appearance on The Breakfast Club radio show.

“Ratings were fine, we were doing fine, and you know the ratings have not gotten better since I left – they’ve gotten [worse] – so it’s not numbers, it wasn’t ratings,” she stated on the show.

“And when I got the call, we, at first, thought it was a rumor. We had seen that there was this [news blog] Puck story that Friday, and we didn’t know what to do with it.

The Mainstream News Battle Hits YouTube: How Fox News, CNN, MSNBC Stack Up
Image
For channels like Fox News and MSNBC, the battle for news-hungry viewers has moved beyond the TV screen. The top cable and network news outlets are increasingly fighting for viewers on YouTube, which has established itself as the go-to hub for all-things television in 2025.

Fox News, just as it does versus traditional linear broadcasters, leads the way when it comes to YouTube. As the midway point of 2025 approaches, the network’s YouTube channel so far this year has racked up 2.3 billion views on the Google-owned platform, more than doubling the number of views it had at the same time last year, according to data from Emplifi, a company that tracks social media metrics.

Its 109% jump in YouTube views year-over-year helped Fox News leapfrog over MSNBC — which had led all news channels on YouTube in 2024 — as the top mainstream outlet on the platform so far this year.

While Emplifi did not provide age demographics,...

One of MSNBC’s best-known personalities is getting into the world of podcasts — even if she’s no longer with MSNBC.

Joy Reid was hosting a Monday-through-Friday program in the early evening for the soon-to-be-spun-off -from-NBCUniversal progressive news outlet as recently as February when she was ousted in a revamp of the network ordered by its new chief, Rebecca Kutler. MSNBC Is Working to Build Its Podcast Portfolio. Next Up: A Nicolle Wallace Show
Image
As the line between a conversational podcast and a TV segment blurs rapidly, MSNBC is stocking up on original audio shows — 18 and counting — as the progressive news brand pivots its business beyond its cable news roots.

The latest bet: The Best People, billed as the first podcast from Nicolle Wallace, the network stalwart who has hosted Deadline: White House since joining MSNBC in 2017 from ABC’s The View and who has held roles in the Bush administration and as an advisor to the late John McCain.

The podcast will be an interview format with notable figures — Jason Bateman, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jeff Daniels and NBA coach Doc Rivers are among the first round of guests — cutting across the entertainment, sports and political landscape. The series, which launches June 2, is part of the network’s efforts to bring on-air linear TV talent to other platforms.

Fox News Continued To See Audience Growth In May While MSNBC And CNN Posted Double-Digit Declines Vs. 2024
Image
Fox News continued to show robust ratings growth for the month of May, again dominating its cable news rivals MSNBC and CNN, which have seen year-over-year declines.

The past month saw the debut of MSNBC’s new nighttime lineup, with The Weeknight taking the 7 p.m. Et slot, Rachel Maddow returning to one night a week at 9 p.m. Et and Jen Psaki filling that time period Tuesday to Thursday.

But the new shows are not reversing the trendlines vs. 2024. While MSNBC has recovered some audience since a post-election fall off, the network, like CNN, has seen double-digit drops from a year ago. The caveat is that last year was a presidential election year, when networks typically see an increase in viewership.

In primetime, Fox News averaged 2.46 million viewers, up 23%, while MSNBC posted 877,000, down 24%, and CNN averaged 426,000, down 18%. In the 25-54 demo, Fox News averaged 262,000, up 32%, compared to CNN...

MSNBC Ratings Without Rachel Maddow: How’s the Network Doing?
Image
The cable news ratings are in for last Friday (May 9), including Jen Psaki‘s final rating for her first week in the 9 pm slot with her new show, The Briefing, which replaced The Rachel Maddow Show. According to AdWeek, citing Nielsen numbers, Psaki brought in 1.074 million total viewers for MSNBC at 9 pm on Friday, with 66,000 in the key 25-54 demo. This was down slightly from her Thursday (May 8) numbers, which stood at 1.105 million total viewers and 98,000 in the key demo. Psaki, who previously served as former President Joe Biden’s White House press secretary, took over the Tuesday to Friday 9 pm slot from Rachel Maddow, had been hosting five nights a week for the first 100 days of President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House. Maddow has now scaled back to Monday nights only. Elsewhere on MSNBC, Chris Hayes brought in 932,000 total viewers on Friday at 8 pm, with 87,000 in the key demo.

Chris Hayes Reacts to Trump Giving Top Job to Fox News’ Jeanine Pirro
Image
MSNBC’s All In host Chris Hayes admitted that Fox News anchor Jeanine Pirro makes for “good TV” as he commented on her appointment as interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. On Thursday (May 8), President Donald Trump announced Pirro’s appointment, making her the latest in a long line of former Fox pundits to be given roles within his administration. This came after Trump withdrew the nomination of the controversial Ed Martin. With the appointment, Pirro, who previously served as a judge and later district attorney in Westchester County, New York, will step down as co-host of The Five. “Jeanine Pirro has been a wonderful addition to The Five over the last three years and a longtime beloved host across Fox News Media who contributed greatly to our success throughout her 14-year tenure,” Fox News said in a statement, per Mediaite. “We wish her all the best...

Chris Hayes Blasts ‘Golden Toilet Guy’ Trump for ‘Preaching Minimalism’
Image
MSNBC‘s Chris Hayes didn’t pull any punches on Wednesday’s (April 30) episode of All In as he slammed “Golden Toilet Guy” President Donald Trump for “preaching minimalism” amid ongoing economic turmoil. The response came as Trump’s back-and-forth tariffs and trade war with China have caused the stock market to plummet in recent weeks, and now there are fears of a recession. While Trump blamed the quarterly numbers on former President Joe Biden at the White House on Wednesday, Hayes fired back, pointing out how the economy was actually stable under Biden. “As wages stayed high and unemployment near record lows, they ended up with this kind of Goldilocks, ‘not too hot, not too cool’ economy, a very difficult trick to pull off. It never went into recession, something so many people on TV kept saying was coming right around the corner, over and over and over,” Hayes said,...

Tim Walz Says ‘We Wouldn’t Be in This Mess’ If He and Harris Didn’t Lose: ‘I Own This’
Image
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz didn’t mince words during his latest appearance on MSNBC, telling Chris Hayes that his and Kamala Harris’ loss is to blame for the current state of America.

“Look, I own this. We wouldn’t be in this mess if we won the election, and we didn’t,” Walz told Hayes on Wednesday. “We have to make sure Americans know that it’s not just that Donald Trump is bad, but we’re offering them something better. And I think that’s what we need to work on.”

During his interview, Walz focused on the harm the Trump-led tariff war with Canada has done to his own state. The politician noted that 90% of pot ash used in Minnesota — a common fertilization tool — comes from Canada. He went on to say that these tariffs have made the U.S. an “untrustworthy” trading partner and worried that the...

Is It Because of Donald Trump Hate: Did MSNBC Fire Joy Reid, Why Was Her Show Canceled?
Image
Joy Reid, one of the longtime anchors of MSNBC, is being canceled as the liberal network is going through a reshuffle for its programming structure. Her 7 Pm show called the ReidOut will be replaced by a panel show consisting of Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele who co-host the weekend show. The new president of MSNBC Rebecca Kutler is said to have made the reshuffle while Reid’s final episode is going to take place later this week.

Joy Reid | Credit: MSNBC

Reid has been a strong critique of Donald Trump and other Republic voters. She also criticized the right-wing Latino Republican voters saying that they own everything concerning their position under Trump’s administration, indicating the immigration laws.

Reid’s background regarding being a child of immigrant parents and her position in the world of broadcast media as a Black woman has gained her both fandom and hostility.

MSNBC Holds ‘Tense’ Joy Reid Staff Meeting After Firing Leaks: ‘Pointed Questions, Raw Emotions’
Image
Joy Reid’s firing from MSNBC leaked to the press before her staff was notified, forcing network chief Rebecca Kutler to call an impromptu meeting filled with “pointed questions” and “raw emotions,” media journalist Oliver Darcy reported Sunday.

According to Darcy’s Status newsletter, staffers “expressed frustration and disbelief, outraged that they had learned of their show’s fate from reports in the press rather than from leadership. Others demanded answers about the reasoning behind the cancellation of ‘The ReidOut’ and what it meant for their futures at the network.”

They got their answer: “The meeting, which lasted nearly 30 minutes, featured pointed questions, raw emotions, and a discussion of the changes ahead” — including the revelation that the entire staff would be laid off, Darcy writes. Kutler said she hoped the staff would produce the 7 p.m. rotation until the changes take effect in April.

Status also reported that Kutler held...

Hall, who departed the network in 2017, also commented on Reid’s ousting. “Where there is Joy there is friendship and love,” she wrote on Threads. “@joyannreid is the core of a sisterhood where we see each other and rise together. Next Chapter. Love you Joy Reid @thereidout.”

I owe the television part of my career to Joy Reid, as do so many other Black voices y'all never would have heard of if not for her.

And *that's* why she's gone. They can treat black folks as interchangeable, but...

Joy Reid’s Sudden MSNBC Exit — and How She Let Queer Viewers Down
Image
The Joy Reid era at MSNBC is over. The liberal commentator, who will be leaving her 7 p.m. weeknight show amidst a larger shakeup, was perhaps the network’s toughest critic of Donald Trump, delivering blistering critiques of both the president and his voters. Reid seemed to welcome controversy in a way that made her built for a contentious moment; after last year’s election, for instance, she told Latino Republican voters that they “own everything” that will happen to their families under Trump. The author of three books about politics, Reid’s personal story as the child of immigrants raised in Brooklyn was inspiring, and her status as a relatively rare Black woman in cable news made her a magnet both for fandom and vitriol.

The MSNBC reorganization will also affect anchor Alex Wagner, downshifting to contributor. And it suggests a desire, on the part of the venerable left-leaning...

Major Shake Up Coming to MSNBC Lineup as Channel Preps Programming Reset
Image
MSNBC is set to shake up its programming lineup across all dayparts in a dramatic reworking of the left-leaning cable news channel’s slate, multiple sources familiar with the changes confirm to The Hollywood Reporter.

Shows in primetime, dayside and the weekends will be impacted, with some notable cancelations, elevations, and new additions expected, one of the sources says. The moves will be an opening salvo from Rebecca Kutler, who was named MSNBC’s president earlier this month.

Among the expected changes are the cancelation of Joy Reid’s 7 p.m. show, which is likely to be replaced by a panel show featuring the co-hosts of MSNBC’s The Weekend morning program: Symone Sanders, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez.

And in primetime, Jen Psaki is expected to secure additional hours during the week. The former White House press secretary currently hosts Inside with Jen Psaki on Mondays at 8 p.m.

MSNBC To Drop Joy Reid From Primetime Lineup; ‘The Weekend’ Anchors And Jen Psaki Eyed For Nighttime Slots
Image
Joy Reid’s show will be dropped from MSNBC’s lineup as part of a series of changes expected to be announced this week.

The network is making plans to launch a show featuring The Weekend anchors Symone Sanders Townsend, Michael Steele and Alicia Menendez into the 7 p.m. Et slot, according to a source familiar with the matter. The show would run for two hours on Mondays and for one hour from Tuesday to Friday.

Reid has anchored The ReidOut since 2020, having been put in that time period following the departure of Chris Matthews. Her last show is expected to be this week.

Also expected are other changes, including plans for who will fill the rest of the 9 p.m. Et slot once Rachel Maddow returns to a once-a-week schedule this spring. She was brought back to a five-night-a-week schedule after Donald Trump’s inauguration, as the network looked...

Joy Reid and Alex Wagner Axed From MSNBC Lineup in Major Network Shakeup
Image
MSNBC’s evening line-up may soon look quite different from what die-hard viewers have come to expect.

The NBCUniversal-backed cable network is expected to move the trio of Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele to its 7 p.m. weekday slot Tuesday through Friday, according to two people familiar with the matter. The group on Mondays will lead two hours, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The move will have direct implications for Joy Reid, the anchor who currently fills 7 p.m. She is expected to host her last show on MSNBC this week.

What’s more, Alex Wagner, who has hosted weeknights at 9 p.m. save for a Monday night led by Rachel Maddow, is expected to be named a contributor, according to three people with knowledge of current talks. Wagner, who has been working as a correspondent across the U.S. during the first 100 days of the new...

MSNBC’s Rebecca Kutler Takes Over as President
Image
As it prepares for its next chapter apart from Comcast, MSNBC has formally found its new leader.

Rebecca Kutler, who held the title of interim president at the cable news channel, was officially promoted on Wednesday, top executive Mark Lazarus told employees. Kutler will succeed Rashida Jones, who served as MSNBC’s chief from 2021-2024 during the Biden presidency.

“Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of learning how all of you do what you do so well, and you’ve been doing it for 28 years, and you’ve built something truly incredible. MSNBC is now one of the most engaged brands in all of television,” Kutler told staff. “We ended 2024 as number one in cable news on both YouTube and TikTok. That is a credit to everyone on this call and everyone who has built this brand into what it has become over the last 28 years.

Bill Maher Criticizes NFL’s Streaming Push, Citing User Experience Concerns
Bill Maher
Comedian Bill Maher has publicly criticized the National Football League’s move toward streaming platforms, highlighting significant challenges in the digital sports viewing experience. During the latest episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” Maher outlined specific issues that he believes are making football harder to watch.

The comedian focused on technical difficulties that plague modern sports streaming. “I used to be able to switch between two games in just a second,” Maher said during his “New Rules” segment. He described the complicated process of navigating streaming services like YouTube TV, which requires multiple clicks to switch between games.

This critique comes at a critical time for the NFL, which has been aggressively expanding its digital presence. The league has recently secured major streaming deals, including a three-year agreement with Netflix for Christmas Day games and Amazon Prime Video’s exclusive Thursday Night Football coverage.

Maher’s complaints extend beyond game navigation.

Real Time with Bill Maher is new tonight with one of Trump's biggest supporters
Image
Is Real Time with Bill Maher new tonight, February 7? The answer is yes, and the HBO late-night TV is opening its doors to one of President Donald Trump's biggest supporters.

Real Time with Bill Maher has a habit of ruffling feathers on both sides of the aisle. But there's no denying that it has the most diverse group of guests in late-night TV when it comes to political and social views.

That characteristic will absolutely be on display tonight, February 7. A brand-new episode of Real Time with Bill Maher will air featuring one of President Trump's most loyal supporters in Washington, D.C.

That honor goes to Representative Byron Donalds. The Florida Republican joins Real Time with Bill Maher tonight as a member of the panel.

While Donalds will be eager to keep the attention on Trump's second term and the wave of changes the president has already made,...

“Bluesky Has the Juice”: Celebrities Flee “Toxic” X for Rival Social Media Site
Image
Call it a blue wave. A host of actors, directors, musicians, journalists and other prominent people are dumping X (formerly Twitter) and flocking to social media platform Bluesky.

In the past week, an increasing number of bold-faced names have announced that they plan to post less on X, or leave the platform altogether, citing myriad issues with the social media company, including far right content, hate speech, transphobia, racism, harassment, pornography, crypto scams, bots and the political views of owner Elon Musk, the billionaire oligarch who is a vocal supporter and financial backer of Donald Trump.

Musk’s ownership of X and his updates to content moderation on the platform have been pushing brands and media groups closer and closer to the exit. This week, The Guardian media group announced that it will stop posting on X, describing the site as a “toxic media platform.” On Nov. 4, the Berlin Film...

Election 2024: All the Major News Networks’ Plans for Tuesday Night — and Beyond
Image
Election Day is here, and the major news networks are prepared for a long night — and potentially a long week.

With over 50 million people early voting in the 2024 Presidential Election, Tuesday night will offer plenty of results to thumb through even if an ultimate winner isn’t called until later in the week, and most of the news networks will kick off their election night coverage at 6 p.m. Et, with CNN even starting at 12 a.m. Et while NBC News begins at 5 p.m. Et.

MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki will return to the Big Board — and will even be livestreamed on Peacock and other social platforms — while Fox News will see Bill Hemmer steering the “Bill”-board.

Most networks have scheduled eight hours of election night programming from 6 p.m. Et to 2 a.m. Et, with a result for the presidential showdown between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump not expected immediately.

MSNBC’s Primetime ‘Avengers’: Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace and Joy Reid Assemble to Battle Cable News’ Old Rules
Image
Joy Reid got the call while she was waiting in a restaurant at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to get on a plane to Paris. Nicolle Wallace received a summons, she remembers, when “I was in the middle of nowhere with my son and had no makeup.” To respond to similar requests, says Rachel Maddow, “I have made illegal U-turns on the state highway.”

When “The Avengers” are needed, no one can ignore the alert.

Reid, Wallace and Maddow look nothing like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor or any of the other super-powered characters who populate the well-watched Marvel films from Disney. And yet, on MSNBC, where each anchors her own program, they are part of an assemblage that is being convened with greater frequency.

“When there’s a moment,” says Rashida Jones, MSNBC’s president, the network likes to “bring the team together and elevate the seriousness of the news.

“Make Them Riot”: Newly Unsealed Filing Gives New Details Of Federal Election Conspiracy Case Against Donald Trump
Image
A newly unsealed filing reveals additional evidence in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s election conspiracy case against Donald Trump, as the prosecutor argued that the former president “resorted to crimes to try and stay in office.”

The filing, made public Wednesday, details the extent to which a bevy of advisers, including Vice President Mike Pence, sought to convince Trump that his challenge to the 2020 presidential election would not succeed and that it lacked evidence, but the then-president went ahead with his election-rigging claims anyway.

“The evidence demonstrates that the defendant knew his fraud claims were false because he continued to make those claims even after his close advisers — acting not in an official capacity but in a private or campaign-related capacity — told him they were not true,” Smith wrote in the brief.

Throughout the filing are instances where state lawmakers and officials told Trump and his allies that their rigged election claims were not credible.
