Nearly 49 years later, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws remains one of the most iconic classic thriller movies in cinematic history. As for the movie characters, it’s hard to imagine Jaws without Richard Dreyfuss’ portrayal of Matt Hooper. The sharp-witted marine biologist became one of the movie’s most memorable characters.

But according to Steven Spielberg, Dreyfuss was far from his first choice for the role. In fact, the movie almost had a very different Hooper as Spielberg initially eyed for other big actors. However, a little persuasion from Star Wars mastermind George Lucas and a lot of persistence.

George R.R. Martin’s fantasy novel series spawned HBO’s global phenomenon Game of Thrones, changing TV filmmaking and storytelling for a long time. Despite its dicey final season (and series finale), the show was extremely popular and was a pop cultural event during its run, commanding high budgets and movie-level filmmaking.

However, the show was not always this expensive. While its pilot budget was more than traditional shows (since it was a period fantasy), there were many compromises made to factor in the budget, resulting in some truly extravagant sequences in the novels being reduced. Martin spoke of one such instance, which resulted in his least favorite scene.

Game of Thrones has birthed many spin-offs since the series went off the air in 2019. Although most of them are still under development, barring House of the Dragon, which is on its way to return for Season 3, it seems like the number of these shows just keeps increasing.

As such, fans wishing to see more of them is understandable. Especially since Toby Osmond, who played the role of the Dornish prince, felt the same. But a Game of Thrones spin-off not only based in Dorne but also helmed by Steven Spielberg?...

I have been podcasting and reviewing for some time now. I love the whole process. It was surprising and humbling when actors, directors, producers, distributors and all manner of creatives within the industry started speaking to us. As someone who reviews a Lot of movies, who grew up in the era of the video shop, its fun to see people clearly raised on the same types of films I enjoyed as a teenager now stepping behind the camera and making films of their own. Films that, as the filmmakers peers, I can recognise as having been influenced by the very same films I know, and in a lot of cases, love. Case in point, Tom Paton.

Paton’s last film, Black Site, clearly wore its inspirations on its sleeve, the John Carpenter-esque action-horror hybrid was just that.

In our exclusive, Nsfw clip, a military team witnesses evidence that they wish they had never seen. Written and directed by Tom Paton, Black Ops follows that small military team, who have arrived on a field to carry out a secret mission. Soon, however, they "find themselves trapped in a terrifying, never-ending stairwell," in the words of the official synopsis. "Forced to climb or die, the group soon come face to face with their past sins in a desperate fight for survival." The description "suffocating intensity" certainly applies to the film. As part of our support for the launch of Tom Paton’s new film The Ascent on VOD, here’s an interview with actor and regular Tom Paton collaborator Toby Osmond, who appears in the film as Jack Ford.

The Ascent follows a group of mercenaries, who are sent to Eastern Europe in the middle of a civil war to retrieve intel. Shortly after the mission, the unit find themselves trapped on a never-ending stairwell; forced to climb or die. To survive, they must revisit their past sins if they ever want to get off.

The Ascent reminded me of Michael Mann’s The Keep, which was sort of his lost film…

To: I’ve heard people say that The Ascent reminds them of a cross between Ringu and Time…something, I get the Ringu reference because of the monster in our film, but I’ve not seen The Keep.

U.K producer Mosley Studios and producer-financier Goldfinch are turning to virtual reality for the launch of their latest feature, action thriller “The Ascent.”

Thought to be the first film premiere inside virtual reality, “The Ascent” will bow June 12 at 7 p.m. (BST) via AltspaceVR, and will be available to those with an Oculus headset, or similar. The event will be called “The Vr Film Festival.”

For those without AltspaceVR or access to a visor, the film will also premiere on Goldfinch’s recently launched VOD service Birdbox.Film at the same time.

The AltspaceVR premiere will also include a Q&a with director Tom Paton and cinematographer George Burt.

Burt said: “The Vr Film Festival was launched to give feature films a virtual platform to premiere in a copyright-safe environment. Due to Covid-19 we’ve been looking into tech and found AltspaceVR which can host the event with up to 100 people attending.

A new trailer for Black Ops has been released. This is the latest from the folks at Samuel Goldwyn Films and comes from writer/director Tom Paton. On the surface at least, this seems like a somewhat standard modern military operation flick. A rag-tag group of heroes on a mission. That old bit. However, the movie made its debut at FrightFest last year, a genre film festival. What on Earth was a move like this doing at a festival geared toward horror, one might wonder? This trailer provides a pretty interesting answer to that very question.

One of this year’s Frightfest World Premieres, Black Site had people excited with only its description promising John Carpenter-esque action… Which is all I needed to hear to give it a watch. In truth, despite despite this playing at Frighfest, it’s not really a horror movie. The sci-fi elements more than make it worthy of being shown at one of the World’s leading genre festivals though.

The sci-fi here feels very Lovecraftian, involving elder gods that are living on Earth being captured and held at the Artemis Black Site until they are not needed any more and are sent back from where they originally came. It all feels very much...

Corrie Greenop and Lee Apsey’s cack-handed British horror heads straight for the rocks

This amateurish British horror film would be more forgivable, maybe even endearing in an “ah bless, at least they tried” way, if it were made by actual amateurs. However, director Corrie Greenop and his co-writer Lee Apsey already have a few titles in their filmographies, so no free passes will be issued.

This cack-handed effort features April Pearson as Amy, a woman whose sole job is to keep her white, side-boob-exposing dress immaculate throughout, even after she’s spent two days scrambling over rocks at the beach. Amy has arrived at a remote lighthouse to see her former lover Beth (Lynne Anne Rodgers) and Beth’s mute daughter Maya (pre-teen Kendra Mei, giving the film’s best performance) after the sudden death by drowning of Beth’s husband Christian (Toby Osmond).
