Cowboy hat-wearing RuPaul opens DragCon LA 2024 with ceremonial pink ribbon cutting [Video]
Image
RuPaul’s DragCon LA 2024 has officially begun! Earlier today, the cowboy hat-wearing RuPaul Charles opened the festivities at the Los Angeles Convention Center with the ceremonial cutting of the pink ribbon. “Fabulous! Have a good time. I love you,” the Queen of Drag told his adoring crowd while still holding the enormous pink scissors. RuPaul’s co-producer and co-judge Michelle Visage stood beside him, and they were flanked by dozens of drag queens from the American version of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” plus many other worldwide installments. Watch the ribbon cutting video below:

Once again, the convention’s festivities are presented by World of Wonder Productions and its co-founders, Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. This year’s theme is the “hottest ever” … and we’re assuming that refers to the sizzling talent that’ll be on-hand rather than the California weather.

‘Whatcha Packin’ for ‘Drag Race 16’ episode 4: Mirage talks renaissance of Vegas drag with Michelle Visage
Image
Each week on “Whatcha Packin’,” Michelle Visage interviews the recently eliminated queen and shows us some of the runway looks they didn’t get the chance to use on the show. Following her episode 4 elimination, Mirage shares her thoughts on the value of “getting back up” after falling in pleasers and failing on the show. Watch the full episode above via the official RuPaul’s Drag Race channel on YouTube.

In her interview with Michelle, Mirage explained the emotion she displayed when she was eliminated, calling it “a release” of everything that was built up to get on the show. Michelle showered Mirage with praise as a performer, especially as a contrast to how she presents out of drag and because of the “vogue femme” aspects of her dancing and heel clacking skills. Mirage shared that she is the sister of Anetra and has also worked with a lot of Ru...

RuPaul's Drag Race: Mothers & Daughters Who've Competed For Crown
Image
Drag is a family affair with older, experienced queens mentoring younger ones in a drag family known as a "Haus". Drag daughters often adopt their mother's last name and exhibit similar characteristics and talents. Many mother/daughter duos have competed on RuPaul's Drag Race, showcasing the strong mentorship and community in the drag world.

Since its premiere in 2009, RuPaul’s Drag Race fans have watched over two hundred queens compete for the crown, but what viewers may not know is that drag is a family affair. Often, an older and more experienced queen will mentor an emerging drag artist, teaching them everything, from makeup and padding tips to how to get booked for a gig. Drag mothers can have multiple daughters who then go on to have daughters, creating a drag family, otherwise known as a “Haus.”

Some family resemblances are uncanny, mainly when the daughter adopts their mother’s last name,...

‘Drag Race’ Standouts Share How Their Latino Heritage Inspires Looks (Exclusive)
Shawn Morales in RuPaul's Drag Race (2009)
The start of October marks the beginning of LGBTQ History Month and the midway point of National Hispanic Heritage Month — two cultures with rich histories and contributions to the arts.

To celebrate, TheWrap recently caught up with five LatinX standouts from “RuPaul’s Drag Race”: Alexis Mateo, April Carrion, Bianca Del Rio, Vanessa Vanjie Mateo and Crystal Methyd. The queens shared their personal herstories and how their Latino heritage inspire their drag.

Check out the interview below and behind-the-scenes of the queens’ LatinX Heritage Month shoot above.

How did Latin culture inspire your drag?

Alexis Mateo: My mom was a fanatic of Miss Universe, and it’s a huge event in my house in Puerto Rico. When she was younger, she used to train people for pageants. I competed in pageants since I was a little boy. And of course, when I became a drag queen, Miss Universe was an inspiration.

10 Memes That Perfectly Sum Up Miss Vanjie
Image
One of the most legendary contestants to come out of RuPaul's Drag Race is the Puerto Rican drag queen and entertainer Vanessa Vanjie Mateo. Being the drag daughter of season 3 icon Alexis Mateo, there was a lot of expectation for Vanjie to go far in the competition. Sadly, she was eliminated during the first episode of the eleventh season.

Despite that, she made a mark with her memorable exit line where she repeated "Miss Vanjie" thrice before departing the stage. Her unexpected line has left a mark on the show, especially since RuPaul and the other contestants constantly quoted her throughout the season, even if she wasn't competing anymore. Her popularity has allowed her to compete again on the show — and has prompted fans to make funny memes.

She's Hard To Ignore And Forget My life is Miss Vanjie memes and I’m here for every single one of them pic.

RuPaul's Drag Race Recap: Patriot Games
Sutan Amrull
On Monday night’s edition of RuPaul’s Drag Race, the six remaining queens shot patriotic PSAs for the troops — though I’m not sure which military base has a drag-friendly policy! — but most of the gals faltered in at least one of the three crucial areas: Fashion, comedy, and/or heart. I suppose Alexis Mateo’s campy polyester pantsuit and “Bam! Bam!” dancing shtick was moderately entertaining, but I couldn’t get what had Ru and Ms. Visage doubled over with laughter. With no clear winner, and with front-runners Raja and Shangela both flirting with the bottom two, Ru...

'RuPaul's Drag Race': Alexis Mateo makes a patriotic splash!
Shawn Morales in RuPaul's Drag Race (2009)
Week ago, I was obsessed with Raja. Then I fell for Stacy Layne. Last week, I was reals into Shangela! And now, after last night’s delightful, patriotic-themed episode, I found myself falling for the charming Alexis Mateo, who I previously hadn’t been that into so far this season. After loving on all these different gals over the past few weeks, I feel like a Drag Race slut.

Because, of course, you know whose fault this constant love-shifting is? The Drag Race producers! They’re playing games with my heart, making me love a different queen each week, by...

'RuPaul's Drag Race': Preview tonight's patriotic PSAs from the queens -- Exclusive Video
RuPaul
On tonight’s episode of reality delight RuPaul’s Drag Race, the queens will be supporting the troops during the main challenge by each filming a PSA. EW has obtained an exclusive video previewing the PSAs, which as you might guess are rather hilarious. “This is the only land,” screeches Alexis Mateo, “where you can grow up and become whatever you want to be!” Raja adds: “America: Where the son of immigrants can wear her freedom…proudly.” And the always-nutty Yara Sofia weighs in at one point with a twist on RuPaul’s classic episode-ending line: “If you don’t love America,...

Drag Ya Later with Jon & John: "So a Drag Queen Walks Into a Bar..."
Why did the drag queen cross the road?

These and other comedy mysteries are deciphered in this week’s Drag Ya Later as we examine last night’s stand-up comedy themed RuPaul's Drag Race episode!!!

Along the way we heard a bit of “reading” (which was cute, but we needed some Laotian spoken up in here!), and we learned that fat suits can pay off, poop jokes are perennial, and birds of a feather sometimes just can’t fly. Oh, and Rita Rudner showed up! Where the hell has she been lately???

And yes, Alexis Mateo sported some serious knockers. But best of all was that in Untucked, we saw a more human side to one of this season’s toughest queens, and we learned once and for all (well, almost) how a queen uses duct tape to its greatest advantage.

Just watch our mad, messy recap to make sense of it all…...

'RuPaul's Drag Race': The queens confuse couture with shoulder flair
RuPaul
The most hilarious things transpire on fashion-centric reality shows when the word “couture” enters the competitive mix. The main challenge on night’s edition of RuPaul’s Drag Race is the perfect example of the craziness the word inspires: The queens were solicited to create a couture, one-of-a-kind runway look based on one of eight different cakes, including pineapple upside down cake, chocolate lava cake, princess cake, and so on. Truly, it’s a genius test, seeing as how ridiculously over-the-top pastries should provide the ample inspiration for just as over-the-top — and thus couture — fashions on the runway.

Alas, the...

'RuPaul's Drag Race': It's all about the big girls this season
RuPaul
Things are getting real heavy on RuPaul’s Drag Race this season. And that’s mostly because, so far, the show has mostly focused on its three delightful big-girl contestants: Mimi Imfurst, Delta Work, and Stacy Layne Matthews. Not that I’m complaining—at all. That’s certainly been a very good thing.
