Japan’s leading indie film festival, Tokyo Filmex (November 23-December 1) has unveiled the line-up for its competition, opening and closing films, and other sections.

After two weeks of new cinema, the Berlin Film Festival comes to a close this Sunday, February 25, with its annual awards ceremony. This year’s event marks one of change, as festival artistic director Carlo Chatrian, at his post since 2018, steps down to make way for Tricia Tuttle, who will take over for next year’s outing.

Or so is the somewhat gloomy sentiment of Qiu Yang’s debut Some Rain Must Fall, which finds Cai, 45-year-old housewife being raked over the coals when a perfect storm of past and present events coincide over a hellish few days. While a dramatic, unintentionally violent moment triggers a cascade of deepening miseries, the actual dramatic catalyst has been long coming, longer actually than the current discord with her husband. Each of them having a somewhat fractured relationship with their teenage daughter, and contending with both their elderly parents, the film is a condensed laundry list of intergenerational domestic strife, but led quite exceptionally by Yu Aier, whose troubled countenance gives way to cathartic fury and eventual reclamation of her dogged durability.…...

Giancarlo Nasi’s Quijote Films, one of the lead producers of Chile’s current Oscar entry “White on White,” has closed a co-production deal with France’s Les Valseurs at the American Film Market for “The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,” the first feature from Diego Cespedes, the Cannes Festival’s 2018 Cinefondation first prize winner.
Mexico’s Varios Lobos, led by Pablo Zimbron, is also a co-producer.
In addition, the pact includes the financing and co-production of a short film by Cespedes, with a budget that exceeds $116,000, making it one the most expensive short films to be ever made in Chile’s cinematic history. Titled “The Most Wretched Man in the Desert,” it is slated to shoot by January next year. According to Nasi, who has been in Los Angeles for the AFM and other meetings, the short will feature a good number of special effects, which drive up the budget.

Kirill Mikhanovsky’s “Give Me Liberty” and Gu Xiaogang’s “Dwelling in the Fuchun Mountains won the best picture prizes in the international and Chinese cinema sections on Tuesday at the International Film Festival and Awards Macau (Iffam).
“This film shouldn’t have existed because there were so many obstacles. Everything was a miracle. Us being here is an utter miracle,” said Mikhanovsky, who took the stage with his producer Alice Austen to describe the frenzy of trying to shoot their film for a quarter of their original budget.
“If someone had asked us a year ago if we’d like to show our film in Macau, we’d have said man, you’re out of your mind,” he laughed, before thanking the festival. “This is such a gathering of minds and intellects and true lovers of cinema, which is very rare. You’ve truly crafted a one-of-a-kind global event.

International guests in town for the festival include Peter Chan Ho-sun, head of the international competition jury, and fellow jury members Ellen Eliasoph, Tom Cullen, Dian Sastrowardoyo and Midi Z, as well as New Chinese Cinema competition jury head Cristian Mungiu and his fellow jury members Qiu Yang, Kirsten Tan, Tricia Tuttle and Noah Cowan.

The New Chinese Cinema section returns for the second year.
The 4th International Film Festival & Awards Macao has unveiled its 2019 programme, including the return of the New Chinese Cinema section with a jury headed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu.
Mungiu will oversee a five-person jury watching six films from Chinese-speaking territories. His jury consists of BFI London Film Festival artistic director Tricia Tuttle; former Sffilm (San Francisco Film) executive director Noah Cowan; and filmmakers Kirsten Tan from Singapore and Qiu Yang from China.

Berlinale Talents, the annual programme held at the Berlin International Film Festival (Feb 15-25, 2018), has revealed the 250 participants who will take part in this year’s edition.

The full line-up is divided into 128 women and 122 men. Of the pool, 99 are directors, 52 are producers, 13 are actors, ten are screenwriters, 17 are cinematographers, 14 are editors, 11 are production designers, ten are in sales and distribution, ten are composers, and six are sound designers.
Notable among the 250 are Chinese director Yang Qiu, whose short film A Gentle Night was awarded a Palme d’Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, Turkish actress Elit İşcan who starred in the critically acclaimed Mustang, and Angela Guerrero, Mexican distributor of the documentary I Am Not Your Negro (Berlin Panorama, 2017).

With the Official Selection of features for the 68th Cannes Film Festival set to be revealed tomorrow (April 16), the line-up of Short Films has been unveiled in advance.
This year the Selection Committee received 4,550 short films – 1,000 more than in 2014 – from more than 100 countries.
Nine films (including one animation) will compete for the Short Film Palme d’or, to be awarded by Timbuktu director Abderrahmane Sissako, president of the Cinéfondation and Short Films jury, at the festival’s awards ceremony on May 24.
