There may not be any guests on this week's Pilot TV Podcast, but there's still stars in abundance across the shows James Dyer, Boyd Hilton, and Kay Ribeiro are casting their critical eye over here. But when Jen (Selin Hizli) arrives in town her life is lit up with laughter and through this kindred soul her dark secret starts to bubble up.”

ITV’s Big London TV Screenings

ITV Studios has announced a series of international sales for the hit detective comedy “Ludwig,” which will air in 85 markets worldwide. Produced by Big Talk Studios and co-produced with That Mitchell and Webb Company, the series was the BBC’s biggest new scripted show of 2024, attracting over 9.5 million viewers. The show has been acquired by major broadcasters, including Zdf in Germany, Svt in Sweden, and BBC First in Africa. In the Asia Pacific region, “Ludwig” will premiere in Australia, New Zealand and Japan, among other territories. Season one will debut in the U.S. and Canada on BritBox on March 20.

ITV Studios and Zhejiang Media Group have partnered to co-develop unscripted content for local and global markets. With Zhejiang’s expertise in high-end non-scripted shows and ITV’s global reach through hits like “The Voice” and “Hell’s Kitchen,” the collaboration aims to create fresh formats.

Exclusive: UTA has signed BAFTA-award-winning actress and writer Daisy May Cooper for representation in all areas.

Cooper first gained widespread recognition as the co-creator, writer, and star of the critically acclaimed BBC Three comedy series This Country. She received BAFTA Awards for Best Scripted Comedy and Best Female Comedy Performance for her portrayal of ‘Kerry Mucklowe.’

Am I Being Unreasonable? Season 2 Premiere...

A praiseworthy score of 88% on Rotten Tomatoes is reason enough to bring back a second season of the British black comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? Written by and starring Daisy Cooper and Selin Hizli, the show is a beautifully dark concoction of betrayal, female friendship, family and unfiltered honesty. Cooper and Hizli met at drama school, although their friendship didn't get off to the best start. Hizli told The Independent that Cooper compared her to Lily Allen for her arrogance. Evidently, the two got over their differences, and TV is all the better for it.

It's hard to think of much that could've been added (or taken away) from their series to make it any better. The laughs were in the right place, the twists took everyone by surprise and the darker moments left viewers a little creeped-out. Season 2 is due to come out next year with, hopefully, the same...

Chelsea Peretti is among a bevvy of guest stars set to appear on the second season of Daisy May Cooper’s BBC hit comedy “Am I Being Unreasonable?”

Sadly, new comedy on television is becoming rarer and rarer, as budgets tighten and production companies become ever more risk averse. Currently, Mrs Brown’s Boys and Not Going Out stand as the only two studio audience sitcoms still on the air, and even then, Not Going Out has not yet officially been recommissioned.

BBC Three has long been a champion of new comedy, from Sean Lock’s wonderful 15 Storeys High to Gavin And Stacey, Him & Her and Back To Life.

David Mitchell is returning to the BBC for genre-bending detective comedy Ludwig, which features on a five-strong comedy slate alongside Hulu co-production Dinosaur and a show from The Duchess star Michelle de Swarte.

Unveiling his first major comedy slate at this afternoon’s BBC Comedy Festival in Cardiff, the corporation’s Comedy Director Jon Petrie said the shows reflect “the depth and range of our offerings which champion British creativity.”

The slate is led by Ludwig, Peep Show star Mitchell’s first BBC project since Upstart Crow, which follows the eponymous protagonist as he takes on the identity of his brother, Dci James Taylor, who has disappeared off the face of the earth. Mitchell’s Ludwig lives in quiet solitude, designing puzzles for a living under his nom-de-plume, and he struggles to adapt to being a twin who happens to be a successful Dci leading Cambridge’s busy inner-city major crimes team.

Daisy May Cooper has fiercely condemned one of London’s most famous theatre schools, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada).

The creator and star ofThis Country and Am I Being Unreasonable? trained at the institution in the mid-2000s.

“I’ve not known bullying like what I experienced in that school, in any f***ing workplace,” she told the Evening Standard in a new interview.

Exclusive: Hulu has acquired Daisy May Cooper’s hit BBC comedy-thriller Am I Being Unreasonable?

The streamer has taken U.S. rights to all six episodes of the genre-bending comedy, which was written by the This Country creator and Selin Hizli (Mum), and exec produced by Jack Thorne. Show will debut as a Hulu original on April 11. BBC Studios struck the deal, having shopped the show at Mipcom Cannes.

If police drama remains the bedrock of British TV commissions, with 2022 having welcomed crime series Karen Pirie, Marlow, Magpie Murders, The Responder, Sherwood and many more, broadcasters also gave us a glittering seam of new fantasy and horror. Last year saw a host of new British supernatural and sci-fi series, from Joe Barton’s sci-fi action-thriller The Lazarus Project and the criminally since-cancelled YA Netflix fantasy The Bastard Son & the Devil Himself, BBC Three teen horror Red Rose, Sky dark comedy The Baby, as well as a new telling of John Wyndham’s spooky children classic The Midwich Cuckoos.

Then there were shows that combined both threads, such as Amazon Prime’s mind-twisting The Devil’s Hour starring Peter Capaldi and Jessica Raine, and Pete Jackson’s excellent debut Somewhere Boy. And some new British TV shows didn’t even feature a single murder, like Netflix’s adored Heartstopper graphic novel adaptation.

Putting a wash on. Attending a school reunion. Making a lasagne. Just some of the things you might have been doing instead of watching TV in 2022. Whatever kept you away from the box, it was a mistake. What you should have been doing is catching up on the below – a selection of British sci-fi, supernatural drama, crime thrillers, and comedy. Because what’s better than the comfortable joy of watching fictional characters live their complicated lives, taking all the risks and making all the mistakes? Almost nothing. Unless you’re the sort of person who puts double cream and three types of cheese in your lasagne, in which case, carry on, you’re doing the Lord’s work.

As 2022 nears its conclusion, here are the new British TV shows that if you missed them on release, deserve your time and attention.

Daisy May Cooper has said that people told her she “wasn’t funny any more” after losing weight.

The This Country star and co-creator is currently appearing in BBC series Am I Being Unreasonable?, which she also wrote.

In a new interview, Cooper said that she’d lost weight because she was “unhappy” with her health, but found herself receiving unexpected messages afterwards.

“I’m so for body positivity but when I was at my biggest I was at my most miserable and I had a massive food addiction,” she said. “I wasn’t healthy. I couldn’t breathe when I was walking up the stairs. I was so unhappy.

“I’ve had some messages like, ‘Well, now you’ve lost the weight you’re not funny any more.’ What the f***? Why do women have to be f***ing fat to be funny? That makes me so angry.”

When I first heard about Am I Being Unreasonable?, I assumed it was some satire on the parenting website Mumsnet. The people on it spend an inordinate amount of their supposedly busy days discussing difficult tradespeople or the unsavoury sexual habits of their “Dh” (Dear Husband). They were studying at London’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (Rada) at the time. Hizli had got into the prestigious school at just 17, and Cooper, a few years older, found her classmate “precocious, arrogant and gobby”, like “bloody Lily Allen”, as Cooper recently told The Times. “I’ll own that completely,” Hizli tells me now, hooting with laughter. “I love Lily Allen. BBC Studios has unveiled the line-up for its annual Showcase and it includes creatives such as “Happy Valley” creator Sally Wainwright and the hosts of “Top Gear.”

The three-day event, which will again be virtual for 2022, will be fronted by talent including “Strictly Come Dancing” co-host Claudia Winkleman, Clara Amfo and Anita Rani, as well as BBC Studios execs.

BBC Studios is the commercial arm of broadcaster the BBC and among those appearing at the Showcase will be the BBC’s director-general Tim Davie, BBC Studios CEO Tom Fussell and BBC chief content officer Charlotte Moore. They will discuss content trends as well as the BBC’s creative direction.

Exclusive: Gentleman Jack producer Lookout Point’s investment in Shane Allen and Kate Daughton’s Boffola Pictures technically valued the new comedy indie at £4M ($5.4M), Deadline can reveal, while Lookout posted a £3.2M ($4.3M) loss for the Covid-impacted 2020/21 financial year.

Lookout’s full year accounts, which were released last month on Companies House, revealed the company invested £1M ($1.4M) to acquire 25% of Boffola Pictures’ share capital on May 4 2021, thereby technically valuing the company at £4M. The acquisition was made two months after the financial year covered in the accounts.

Little was known about the deal prior to the accounts being released, with Lookout only saying it had taken a minority stake when Boffola was officially launched over the summer.

Former BBC comedy bosses Shane Allen and Kate Daughton’s Boffola Pictures has landed its debut commission, a BBC comedy-thriller from This Country creator Daisy May Cooper and Deadwater Fell’s Selin Hizli, exec produced by Jack Thorne.

Cooper and Hizli will play the leads and are starring in the untitled six-part show, portraying two friends who love fun, laughter and booze until everything unravels.

His Dark Materials writer Thorne is on board to exec the project, which was ordered several weeks ago by then-acting Director of BBC Comedy Kate Phillips, who took the post temporarily before Jon Petrie joined to oversee the genre permanently. BBC Studios, which owns Lookout Point, is distributing internationally and Allen, Cooper, Hizli and Daughton are all exec producing alongside director Jonny Campbell.

Thorne said the show “balances joy and truth, funny and real,” adding that it has “been a brilliant education for me as a writer.
