‘Ahsoka,’ ‘Lucifer,’ ‘The 100,’ and ‘The Magicians’ Stars Discuss Latino Representation in Sci-Fi TV
Hollywood’s continued issues with diversity, equity, and inclusion have long been a pain point, especially considering how the resistance to it has proven to leave money on the table. But with respect to the Latino community in particular, which itself is an umbrella for various racial identities, there has been a noticeable uptick in the science fiction and fantasy genres.
Currently airing blockbuster series like “The Last of Us” and “Andor” have multiple Latino leads front and center, with shows like “Wednesday” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” also bringing representation forward in spaces where Latinos were once excluded.
Above, IndieWire hosts an exclusive panel organized by the National Hispanic Media Coalition (Nhmc), and its President & CEO Brenda Victoria Castillo, discussing what more representation in the science fiction and fantasy genres has meant for the Latino community, featuring actors Aimee Garcia, Eman Esfandi, Lindsey Morgan,...

When Walker debuted on The CW, it was an instant hit. Loosely based on the 1990s CBS series with Chuck Norris, Jared Padalecki played Cordell Walker, a top member of the Texas Rangers. As the show opened, Walker was partnered with the feisty Micki Ramirez, played by Lindsey Morgan.
Micki was a great highlight of the show, handling the action scenes and a romance with Trey (Jeff Pierre). She also had to handle personal issues, such as the discovery her “mother” was really her aunt who was raising her when Micki’s real drug-addict mother abandoned her.
So it was a shock to fans when, mid-way through season 2, Morgan suddenly left the series. The episode had Micki learning her ex-fiancé was murdered, bringing up her feelings for Trey and she needed time for herself. She thus quit the Rangers, bidding a sad farewell to Walker before heading off.

Into the Badlands is “a high-octane sci-fi martial arts series” created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. The AMC series is set in a dystopian future with humanity in ruins because of wars, and it follows the story of Sunny, a fierce warrior who rescues a teenager with a bounty on his head. They both journey through a dangerous territory known as the Badlands to survive. Into the Badlands stars Daniel Wu in the lead role, with Orla Brady, Sarah Bolger, Aramis Knight, Emily Beecham, Oliver Stark, Madeleine Mantock, Ally Ioannides, Marton Csokas, and Nick Frost starring in supporting roles. Into the Badlands is a unique series with a unique setting, and that’s why it is hard to find a series with a similar setting and story elements, but we have tried very hard to find shows with similar story elements and many high-octane action sequences.

Many prominent The 100 actors left the show before it ended, though the "why" behind these departures varies greatly. The post-apocalyptic science fiction drama, which is an adaptation of Kass Morgan's young-adult novels of the same name, aired on The CW from 2014 to 2020. Across 100 episodes, the popular show received flack for the harmful ways it killed off fan-favorite characters, putting the TV series' creator Jason Rothenberg at the center of several high-profile conflicts. “Walker", the action crime series reboot of the 1990's western drama "Walker, Texas Ranger", starting Jared Padalecki, Lindsey Morgan, Molly Hagan and Mason Thames, has been canceled after 4 seasons at The CW:
"...'Texas Ranger Cordell Walker', (Padalecki) has his hands tied – literally. Taken and held captive by an anarchist group who is determined to break him, Walker must face a painful memory from his past he’s never shared with anyone and be forced to team up with unexpected ally, 'Julia' (Anna Enge), if he wants to get out alive.
"Back in Austin, the 'Davidsons' are officially gone, and the Walkers are free to move back into their family ranch — but the homecoming has been anything but jovial. Walker’s absence has caused a tornado that has shifted everyone off course, forcing them to abandon their new paths and step back into the familiar shoes of waiting for him to come home.

Lindsey Morgan's departure from Walker in Season 2 was emotionally impactful for fans and the show's storyline. Morgan left due to personal reasons, prioritizing her mental health and well-being over her acting career. Fans may still see Morgan return as Micki in a future episode, as the CW is known for bringing back old characters.

Lindsey Morgan left Walker in season 2 to focus on her mental health, citing personal reasons for her departure. The on-set reunion for Lindsey Morgan's departure scene showcased the full support of the Walker cast and crew. Showrunner Anna Fricke expressed openness to welcoming back Lindsey Morgan as Micki Ramirez if she decides to return.
Despite the success of the Walker reboot, many viewers are understandably confused as to why Micki Ramirez actor Lindsey Morgan quit Walker in season 2. Lindsey Morgan announced her departure from the show in October 2022. At the time, it was unclear what that would have entailed for her character. The 100 knew how to do a redemption arc. Throughout its seven-season run on The CW, post-apocalyptic sci-fi drama repeatedly doubled down on one of its many thought-provoking mantras: there are no good guys. The “good guys” often did terrible things in the name of survival, and the “bad guys” were rarely through-and-through evil (although they could be “cockroaches”). Timed to the recent 10-year anniversary of the series premiere, we chatted with Richard Harmon, Lindsey Morgan, and Henry Ian Cusick about how they came to join the show, the extent to which Harmon and Cusick saw their characters as villains during the first season, and why they think The 100 has stuck around in the sci-fi genre. Murphy wasn’t originally Murphy: he was “John #1,” and he wasn’t meant to live past the show’s second episode. Harmon recalled the process of first auditioning for the show: “I originally auditioned for the role of Bellamy,...

TV plot twists that aren't planned ahead of time can feel cheap and leave dedicated viewers feeling unsatisfied. Unexpected plot twists can come out of left field and lack a solid foundation, like the ones in Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars. Some TV shows introduce plot twists that were not properly hinted at or developed, leaving viewers questioning if they were planned in advance.
Plot twists can make or break TV shows, and the well-executed ones often elevate their series and make them more memorable overall — but there are some massive TV turns that clearly weren't planned ahead of time. When TV shows include plot twists for the sake of shock value, it can feel cheap to dedicated viewers. Leah McKendrick proves herself as a triple threat: writer, director, and actor, crafting hilarious comedies that capture the everywoman experience. The script of Scrambled is filled with sharp dialogue, rapid-fire jokes, and morsels of insight, delivering a perfect balance of sentiment and uproarious humor. Scrambled is an inventive and laugh-out-loud indie comedy that pokes fun at stereotypes, making it relatable and enjoyable for everyone and a must-see hit.
It’s rare to come across a new and exceptional storyteller who manages to capture the human experience so brilliantly. Remember how you felt when Lena Dunam unearthed Tiny Furniture, then Girls? Leah McKendrick follows similar suit with the release of Scrambled. The writer, director, and star of the engaging, irreverent R-rated comedy is a delightful triple threat—she’s smart, shrewd, and funny. A rare comedic force, she fills her new single female-positive comedy with great bon mots and moments of refreshing hilarity.
