Tom Cruise is one of the most popular movie stars in the world, and many of his films have become successful blockbusters or cult classics. However, the actor is also a big movie fan and never fails to show his appreciation for other films.

Godzilla Minus One became a huge hit outside its native Japan, when it was released in 2023. Now, Toho Studios are officially moving forward with a sequel.
Per Bloomberg Japan, Toho Studios has dedicated $1.2 billion to a new globalization effort set to take place across the next three years. This move comes in response to what Toho sees as a growing demand for Japanese films and series across numerous international markets. Among the confirmed projects slated to be a part of this effort is a direct follow-up to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One.
Toho will also be launching their own subscription service, Toho-one, in the coming years, which will give members exclusive access to various films, plays, digital games, and other merchandise and tie-in materials. Toho reportedly aims to increase its overseas sales ratio from 10% to 30% by 2032, which will mark the company's 100th anniversary.

Nearly 70 years since Godzilla first appeared on-screen, the king of the monsters has headlined almost 40 feature films along with a few TV shows. Initially conceived as a metaphor for nuclear weapons, the atomic dinosaur has since battled numerous monsters on-screen, something that has driven Warner Bros’ recent adaptations while they build a Monsterverse. A different approach has been taken by writer/director Takashi Yamazaki, taking the icon back to its post-war roots for an outstanding work that is among the franchise’s best.

Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki is responsible for one of the most successful modern iterations of the iconic kaiju. Recently, he revealed that he met Marvel head honcho Keving Feige, who had nothing but good things to say about the film and future Godzilla projects.
Per VirtualGorilla, the director made an appearance on a panel at the Tokyo International Film Festival to celebrate Godzillas 70th anniversary. Yamazaki was discussing the reception of Godzilla Minus One overseas, when he mentioned an interaction with the president of Marvel, presumably Kevin Feige. "The president of Marvel told me, 'Wadatsumi!'" Wadatsumi, of course, was the codename for the operation to take out Godzilla. Yamazaki continued, "He told me, 'We're all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.' I think it's just lip service."

Godzilla is stomping its way back to the big screen.
A new “Godzilla” movie, from the director of last year’s Oscar-winning Japanese film “Godzilla Minus One,” has been officially greenlit. Toho, the Japanese entertainment company and creator of Godzilla, made the announcement on Friday.
Takashi Yamazaki, who wrote and directed the surprise hit “Godzilla Minus One,” will return for the new film. He’s once again handling the VFX, after winning the Academy Award for best visual effects in 2023.
“Godzilla Minus One” was Toho 33rd “Godzilla” movie and the 37th to include the famous monster. The Japanese film is unrelated to Hollywood’s recent portrayals of Godzilla in Warner Bros. and Legendary’s Monsterverse, which includes King Kong. Set in Japan after World War II, “Godzilla Minus One” starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, a former kamikaze pilot who survives an almost fatal encounter with Godzilla and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Godzilla Minus One is one of the best modern iterations of the beloved franchise, and wowed audiences upon its release in 2023. Now, in the midst of the franchises 70th anniversary celebration, it is being re-released with never-before-seen bonus content.
Per AMC, Takashi Yamazakis Academy Award-winning film is making its way back to AMC theaters starting on Nov. 1, 2024, with 13 extra minutes of content. The films return to the big screen is part of the Godzilla franchises 70th anniversary celebrations. In the fall of 1954, Ishir Hondas original film premiered, creating a cultural phenomenon that has lasted throughout generations. The franchise has been reinvented multiple times, and it has transcended cultural boundaries. When Shaun of the Dead star Simon Pegg first showed up on our screens back in the day, he earned a lot of fans through the fact that he was a celebrity-on-the-rise who had “geeky” interests and embraced “geek culture.” There’s a quote from him bouncing around where he said, “Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” He even titled his memoir Nerd Do Well… But last year, he distanced himself from his past self, writing off nostalgia as a neurological disorder and telling The Guardian, “I’ve aged out of a lot of what people assume I’m about.

The hit movie Godzilla Minus One dropped unexpectedly on Netflix on June 1, and it wasn't long before subscribers were streaming the film en masse. It's already ranking high on the Netflix charts, though this may not be the surprise of the century, given how well the movie did in theaters.
On Sunday, the day after the film's Netflix arrival, Godzilla Minus One was sitting at No. 4 on the streamer's Top 10 list for movies in the United States. Because the film was released without a previous announcement, and as it's still new to the streamer, it's possible that Godzilla Minus One will climb even higher on that list in the days to come. It's the latest of many notable accomplishments achieved by the film, which broke several notable records while playing in theaters.

Godzilla Minus One's success stems from its micro-budgeted visual effects and touching human characters, garnering global attention and an impressive box office run. The film's post-war Japan setting and exploration of survivor guilt have resonated with audiences, leading to critical acclaim and financial success. Currently only available on Prime Video overseas, Godzilla Minus One has become a hot commodity on torrent sites due to high demand.
One of the many reasons Godzilla is having a true moment in the entertainment industry right now is because of the phenomenal release of Godzilla Minus One. When the Japanese release debuted in North America in December of last year, the film gained notable attention for being well-received by critics and for its magnificent visual effects that were made for the very reasonable price of less than $15 million. The release all culminated with Godzilla taking home his first Academy Award following a very successful global box office run.

The King of Monsters finally has his share of Oscars glory.
In an ironic triumph of small over large, Japanese monster movie sensation Godzilla Minus One — which was made for only about $15 million — beat out four big-budget Hollywood tentpoles to win the best visual effects category. It’s the first time in decades that a non-u.S. studio film has won the category. Despite its deep influence on the history of visual effects in cinema, this year was the first time in the Godzilla franchise’s seven-decade history that it was nominated for an Oscar.
Godzilla Minus One was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also headed up the film’s VFX team, which included Kiyoko Shibuya, Masaki Takahashi and Tatsuji Nojima. The team is now Japan’s first-ever winner of the best visual effects Oscar. In another rarity, a director winning the category has only occurred once before...

The team behind Godzilla Minus One brought their beloved character with them to the 2024 Oscars. The group walked the red carpet in shoes adorned with Godzilla sculptures gripping the heels, and holding figurines of the fictional monster inside the theater.
The Oscars red carpet isn’t the first place the figurines have traveled this awards season. They were first seen in a video of the group learning they earned a nomination, and later again at the Oscar nominees luncheon last month.

Toho released a new Godzilla film, titled Godzilla Minus One (read our review Here), in Japan on November 3rd, which happens to be Godzilla Day – the anniversary of the 1954 release of the original Godzilla movie. Toho’s Godzilla Minus One just made its way back into U.S. theaters over the weekend with a brand new black & white version of the Oscar-nominated movie, and along with that new release comes a major bit of news. The film has now crossed over $55 Million in total U.S. box office, making it the #3 Highest Grossing Foreign Language Film in U.S. history!!
Godzilla Minus One passed Hero ($53.7 million) and Parasite ($53.3) to claim that honor. The critically acclaimed film’s worldwide total currently stands at a massive $102.6 million.
The only international films ahead of Godzilla Minus One at the U.S. box office are:
#1 – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon – $128.5 million (U.S.) #2 – Life Is Beautiful – $57.5 million (U.S.)
Godzilla Minus One is currently just $2.5 million shy of Life Is Beautiful‘s U.S. box office total, which would put it in the #2 spot for international films at the U.

Blue Giant is the animated story of a teenage boy, Dai Miyamoto (Yûki Yamada) who wants to be a rising star of Japanese jazz. The plot is thin and lacks tension. Boy meets Jazz, boy meets sax, boy meets band, boy practices sax, on the eve of the band's breakthrough gig tragedy strikes and one of the band members can't make it but band plays anyway, etc. The narrative is pretty much devoid of subplot and the ending is given away at several points in the film.
The film lacks dimensions beyond plot. The three main characters are dull, slightly drawn and don't interact meaningfully outside of their own little bubble. There is nothing in the way of discernible subtext. The animation is conservative and doesn't fit the subject matter. When the unimaginatively named band Jass walk on stage they come with all the anime tropes of thugs going to a.

The taxonomy of Godzilla movies has been carefully considered and deliberately arranged for many years, cordoning off various "eras" of Godzilla movies — eras named after Japanese emperors — into their own, neatly distinguishable chronologies. 1954's "Gojira" through 1975's "Terror of Mechagodzilla" constitute the Showa era, encompassing 15 films. The series was rebooted in 1984 with "Return of Godzilla," and the second era, the Heisei era, ran through "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah" in 1995. Roland Emmerich's 1998 English-language "Godzilla" is an oddity in that it exists outside of an era or a continuity. 1999 through 2004 — that is: "Godzilla 2000" through "Godzilla: Final Wars" — constitutes the Millennium era, although the continuity of one of the films in that era is questionable.
2016's "Shin Godzilla," like Emmerich's film, also exists in its own continuity. A trilogy of animated Godzilla films, also in its own universe, was released in 2017 and 2018. And, of course, the American Monsterverse series has been humming...

"Godzilla Minus One" is one of the best Godzilla movies of all time. At times a riff on "Jaws," it's also an homage to the 1954 original movie and technically a sequel to "Oppenheimer." Yes, the 33rd film in the franchise feels radically different and yet comfortably familiar. It uses a post-war setting to tell another story of humanity's first meeting with the King of Monsters, bringing back the original film's nuclear imagery by giving an update to Godzilla's atomic breath. This helps turn the titular kaiju into a terrifying force of nature bringing about divine punishment.
Perhaps the biggest achievement of "Godzilla Minus One" is how it does the unthinkable and makes you care about the puny humans being crushed by the giant monster. Again, the post-war setting gives the film a historical background to mine meaningful drama, with the protagonist being a failed kamikaze pilot with survivor's guilt...

The King of the Monsters continues its reign at the box office, managing to break yet another record.
Per Forbes, Godzilla Minus One has reached $42 million in domestic ticket sales with another $35 million earned overseas leading into the New Year's Eve weekend. It's not expected to slide past $80 million over the weekend to officially set the new record as the highest-grossing Godzilla movie from Japan that's ever been released. It's all profit at this point, as the acclaimed movie was made with a budget of around $15 million.
