Japanese anime with a time travel theme are so common that they risk feeling clichéd. “Re: Zero Starting Life in Another World”, directed by Masaharu Watanabe and based on the light novel by Tappei Nagatsuki, initially seems to follow this familiar path. However, the script soon veers into unexpected territory. What begins as a typical time-travel coming-of-age story transforms into a mind-bending narrative, like a chess game revealing hidden dimensions of foreshadowing, looping timelines, and existential weight. Despite its complexity, the 25-episode series maintains internal consistency and avoids plot holes, delivering a profoundly emotional experience. White Fox leads the production, with Studio Nexus contributing to nine subcontracted episodes.

It's no secret that in the expansive realm of Japanese manga and anime, bad things regularly happen to good people, making them victims of their circumstances. Sometimes it's clear-cut, such as in shonen manga, where a good-hearted hero suffers through no fault of their own when they deserved better. Some seinen manga/anime characters are like that too, or perhaps it's more morally ambiguous.
In any case, some seinen manga/anime series are grim yet highly compelling because of the horrible injustice that is inflicted on good people, which often leads to stories of revenge or desperately seeking the meaning of an apparently cruel and meaningless world. Even if some seinen characters aren't entirely innocent, they still deserved better than they got, never deserving the whimsical brutality of the world and fate. In a few cases, it's mostly for comedy, proving that even the rough seinen genre has a sense of humor.
