“Never Seen Anything Like It”: Networks Prepare For An Election Night Like No Other
Image
One of the closest, most surprising and momentous presidential elections in recent memory has broadcast and cable networks preparing for the unexpected for its finale: election night.

Traditionally one of the highest-rated news nights of the cycle, this year the challenges for news divisions are in determining the wisest use of resources with all seven swing states within the margin of error, no easy task given the cost pressures on linear TV in general. Added to that are concerns over security, safety and misinformation, with recent incidents serving as a reminder of potential more alarming situations on November 5.

“Definitely, I have never seen anything like it. There’s no question about that,” said Mary Hager, CBS News’ executive editor of politics, who has been doing election nights at CBS News since 1992.

“There’s so much information, misinformation,” she said. “There’s so many people involved. Never, certainly that I can remember,...

How To Watch The New Hampshire Primary Results
Image
A small contingent of journalists gathered near the Canadian border earlier this morning to watch as Dixville Notch, Nh, continued its tradition of casting the first ballots on an election day.

Nikki Haley cleaned Donald Trump’s clock in this hamlet — 6 votes to none.

As the day goes on, network correspondents are fanning out across the state at precincts to talk to actual voters, after months in which the first-in-the-nation primary was judged and assessed by polls. Commentary and analysis is focusing on whether

Haley and her top surrogate, New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, blitzed the airwaves on Monday, while Trump held a final rally in Laconia, Nh, where he predicted that Haley would be out of the race after tonight. He was interrupted by climate protesters, who have been a frequent presence at events in recent days.

There is a Democratic race, too. Joe Biden is not on the ballot,...

Image
ABC News has tapped Brooke Brower to serve as executive producer of This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

Brower has been managing editor for CNN Politics and, before that, spent more than a decade at MSNBC. The This Week slot has not had a permanent EP since the sudden death in December of Dax Tejera. Brower will report to ABC News President Kim Godwin.

Kendall Heath, who served as interim executive producer of This Week, will serve as executive producer of politics and will report to executive editor and senior VP Stacia Deshishku, working very closely with political director Rick Klein, Godwin wrote in a memo to staffers.

Brower joined CNN in 2016 and, before that time, served as executive producer of MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown and Mtp Daily. He launched the latter as an extension of the Meet the Press brand. Brower started his career covering politics as a member...

As Democrats Debate, TV News Tunes In Something Other Than Trump
NBC News’ “Meet the Press” and CBS News’ “Face The Nation” regularly compete for Sunday-morning audiences and scoops from politicos. But this past weekend they looked nothing like one another.

On NBC, President Donald Trump dominated the hour by sitting down for a taped interview with host Chuck Todd. Over at CBS, “Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan featured a talk with Senator Bernie Sanders, one of the leading Democratic candidates for president.

“The news cycle has to be split to a greater degree than it was before,” notes Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics. Covering politics in this moment, he says, means trying to help voters get to know more than 20 Democratic candidates, many of whom aren’t well known by the greater public, and then trying to keep an eye on the President. “It’s all just totally unprecedented,” he adds.

Since Donald Trump was...
