As a Wu-Tang Clan lifer, it breaks my heart to admit what’s been gnawing at me for years: RZA lost his edge the moment he got serious about music theory. The raw, murky magic of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers); the imperfect loops, off-key samples, dusty soul grit, all of that was born from feel, not formula. Back then, he didn’t need to know music theory because he felt it. But once he started to understand the rules, he began obeying them. That’s when the beats stopped sounding like the streets and started sounding like a film score. Immaculate, sure. But sterile.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc premiered on Netflix last month—and it appears to have earned a fan in none other than Quentin Tarantino.
From the talk backs in the Video Archives podcast, “Q.T.,” who is believed to be Tarantino, said, “Who has seen the Netflix movie Chaos directed the the guy who did The Raid? It’s pretty f***ing bad-ass.” Commenters reminded him that the film is called Havoc, but the sentiment still stands.
Havoc soared to the top of Netflix’s streaming charts upon release, racking up 29.8 million views. That impressive debut outpaced several higher-profile films—including The Electric State, the Russo brothers’ star-studded sci-fi adventure featuring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt.

Tom Hardy is having a great year. After wrapping up the Venom trilogy in 2024, the actor had two projects that headed straight to streaming and both experienced exciting success on different platforms.
The most recent release is Netflix's action thriller Havoc, which follows the successful Paramount+ series MobLand. Gareth Evans of The Raid fame wrote and directed Havoc, which starred Hardy, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker in the main roles. Although the movie opened to mixed reviews from the critics and even worse ratings from the audience,Havoc undeniably became a major hit on Netflix, topping the charts in its first week, per Tudum.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25, and had only two days to make an impact before the streamer stopped the clocks. That makes its viewership even more impressive because, for the week between Apr. 21 and 27, Havoc received 29.8 million views, and 53.1 million hours viewed.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the wait has been well worth it. The hard-hitting action thriller has topped Netflix’s streaming charts with 29.8 million views. This makes the film the most-watched title of the week, but it has also beaten some of Netflix’s more high-profile recent releases, including The Electric State.
The Electric State was a highly anticipated sci-fi adventure movie from the Russo brothers starring Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt. With a budget of $320 million, it was also one of the most expensive movies ever made. However, although the film debuted at Netflix’s #1 spot, it did so with just 25.2 million views. As Havoc was produced for a fraction of the budget of The Electric State, it’s certainly a lot more bang for the buck. Other recent action flicks also performed better in their debuts, including Carry On with 42 million views...

After waiting four, long years, action movie fans had reason to celebrate this weekend as the Tom Hardy-led Netflix thriller, Havoc, was released at last. However, while many have quickly found themselves wonderfully wrapped up in Hardy and The Raid director Gareth Evans’ bullet-ridden tale of a bruised detective forced to battle his way into the criminal underworld, there is one thing that stood out to many viewers. And it’s been met with a mixed response...
Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy has become known for his hardman persona and intensity on-screen. But there’s something else he’s become somewhat infamous for too: accents. Whether it be mumbling through Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant, delivering something highly unexpected vocally with Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, or providing two very different voices as Eddie Brock and Venom in the Marvel franchise, Hardy loves to do a voice. Following the culmination of his Venom trilogy, Tom Hardy entered a very eventful 2025: the release of his gangster series, MobLand, and the recently released Netflix action film, Havoc. The latter has been in development for a long time, with several reshoots, but it still wasn't enough to convince the audience.
Havoc premiered on Netflix on Apr. 25. The action film, with Gareth Evans at the helm, debuted with a disappointing score of 61% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics, which was barely enough for a "fresh" score. However, as more reviews came in,Havoc's critics' score slightly improved to 66%, but as the audience started reviewing it, they were less and less impressed, as Hardy's new film has an unfortunate 49% approval from the audience.
While the critics praised Havoc's action and fight sequences and directorial style, the audience was less impressed. One review highlights that Havoc "tries to be too many things at once,...

Tom Hardy seems to have turned over a new leaf in Havoc. After years of headlines about his rocky dynamic with Charlize Theron on Mad Max: Fury Road, it sounds like Hardy has made some serious changes. His Havoc co-star Jessie Mei Li had nothing but praise for him, calling him “lovely to work with” and highlighting how supportive he was on set.
It’s a refreshing shift for an actor once known for bringing as much intensity behind the scenes as he did in front of the camera. If this is the Tom Hardy we’re getting now, Havoc might just be the start of a new era.

Tom Hardy’s old reputation for being tough to work with? Jessie Mei Li says to forget about it.

Tom Hardy stars in “Havoc,” a highly anticipated, hyper-violent thriller from Netflix. The film bears the unmistakable mark of Gareth Evans, a filmmaker known for his visceral style and violent storytelling. “Havoc” certainly delivers on this front, offering an almost over-the-top choreography of violence in a story that moves relentlessly from one violent sequence to an even more violent one.
“Havoc” is all about atmosphere, pacing, noir aesthetics, and street violence. Its setting and style evoke memories of Sin City (2005), featuring characters seemingly driven by the film’s own aesthetic. Written and directed by Gareth Evans, the movie fully embraces his signature style: violence, atmosphere, and characters who exist primarily to fulfill their roles within the narrative.
That said, if you enjoy violent thrillers, it’s quite a spectacle.

Gareth Evans’s Havoc has a setup as elementally simple as the filmmaker’s 2011 breakout The Raid: Redemption and its 2014 sequel: A grizzled detective, Walker (Tom Hardy), fights his way through a gang war in a city plagued by urban rot, along the way uncovering that the highest echelons of society have ties to the drug-peddling underworld. Along the way, he puts down one gangster after another in violent fashion.
It’s established immediately that Walker is a capable but crooked detective whose history of taking dirty money puts him at the mercy of higher-ups. One such figure, Lawrence Beaumont (Forest Whitaker), comes to Walker when word gets out that the politician’s son, Charlie (Justin Cornwell), is the chief suspect in a drug robbery gone bad and on the run from both police and cartel soldiers. “Don’t forget,” Beaumont growls, “I know what you did,” threatening to expose...

Tom Hardy is having a moment with back-to-back releases, while fans are loving him in British crime drama MobLand, theactor is now prepping for the release of the highly anticipated Havoc that marks his long-awaited collaboration with Gareth Evans. While plot details are tightly under wraps, the trailer and other marketing material hint that the director and actor have left no stone unturned in giving fans a thrilling experience. In a new interview with ScreenRant, Hardy likened Evans’ storytelling to that of Christopher Nolan and George Miller.
Hardy is well-versed in both big studio films and indies, and he’s no novice to complex storytelling, having collaborated with Nolan on Inception, Dunkirk, and more. He shared his experience of working with Evans, "I think Gareth has, whether he's aware of it or not, or he can take the compliment or not, he does have an absolute laser for a very specific thing,...

After waiting patiently for four years, Tom Hardy is all set to wreak Havoc on Netflix this Friday. While we await the arrival of the highly anticipated action thriller, which sees Hardy join forces with The Raid director Gareth Evans, the first reactions to Havoc have now emerged. And, mercifully, it sounds like the wait will have been well worth it.
We begin with critic Zachary Lee, who heaps praise on the combined efforts of Hardy and Evans, declaring Havoc “muscular filmmaking at its finest” and highlighting one action scene in particular.
#Havoc: Gareth Evans & Tom Hardy show that we’ve only nicked the surface when it comes to depicting on-screen death. Muscular filmmaking at its finest, it’s relentlessly bleak but there’s a twisted catharsis in seeing how it crescendos in brutality. Best night club fight in ages.

The film stars Tom Hardy, Jessie Mei Li, Justin Cornwell, Quelin Sepulveda, Luis Guzmán, Michelle Waterson, Sunny Pang, Jim Caesar, Xelia Mendes-Jones with Yeo Yann Yann, Timothy Olyphant, and Forest Whitaker. If your movie’s called Havoc, you need to cause some havoc. And who better to bust skulls, blow brains, and hit hard than the combination of director Gareth Evans, and star Tom Hardy? Evans has serious form in wince-worthy action as the filmmaker behind The Raid and The Raid 2, this time swapping martial artistry for the burly physicality of Hardy – as a cop on a mission who’s about to have a seriously bad couple of days.
Evans’ long-awaited return to action cinema is just weeks away – and with the new trailer bringing fresh “oof!”s aplenty, Empire hopped on the blower with him to get a taste of the mayhem. Sorry, the havoc.

Have you ever wondered if Gareth Evans dreams of puppies and rainbows? If so, the official trailer for the filmmaker’s latest, Havoc, is here to put that question to rest. The film stars Tom Hardy as an, of course, bruised detective fighting his way through an underworld of shady types. Sound familiar? Well, given that Evan’s awesome breakout film The Raid: Redemption is considered to have significantly influenced the John Wick series, it’s difficult not to glean from Havoc’s trailer that the film is some kind of reverse pat on the back.
According to Netflix’s official synopsis accompanying the trailer, the film finds Hardy’s Walker, following a drug deal gone wrong, “with a number of factions on his tail; a vengeful crime syndicate, a crooked politician, as well as his fellow cops. After waiting several years for its arrival, the action movie majesty of Havoc, which sees The Raid director Gareth Evans join forces with Oscar-nominee Tom Hardy for this Netflix thriller, is almost upon us. And it certainly sounds like it could boast not just one of Hardy’s best performances, but Havoc has the potential to be one of the best action movies of all time, with Evans promising that the actor is in “f*cking beast mode.”
Speaking with Empire, who have also revealed a new image from Havoc which you can check out below, Evans teased how Havoc will differ from his previous action masterpieces The Raid and The Raid 2. Havoc will involve far more gunplay, and a little less martial arts, than Evans’ previous works, with Hardy at the center as an unstoppable, granite-built action hero.

Gareth Evans’ Havoc has been a long time coming, but the gritty action flick is finally set to be released next month on Netflix. As a massive fan of The Raid and The Raid 2, I’m hugely excited to see what Evans has up his sleeve this time. The director told Empire that Havoc marks a shift from martial arts action to gritty gunplay and that Tom Hardy was more than up for the challenge.
“It was never going to be a martial-arts film,” Evans explained. “I wanted this to feel like the gunplay stuff that I love watching… Tom came to us in f***ing beast mode. I tapped him on the shoulder and it was just like granite. He came fully physically prepared.“

The director behind the acclaimed action movie saga The Raid and The Raid 2, Gareth Evans, has now said exactly what fans want to hear about his upcoming collaboration with Tom Hardy. Havoc, which, after years of waiting, is now set to hit Netflix later this year, has now been described as a “love letter to the heroic bloodshed genre” by the filmmaker. Does he really need to say anything else?
Discussing the long-awaited action thriller at the recent Next on Netflix showcase (via What’s on Netflix), Evans offered some insight into Hardy’s character (“a corrupt American detective on a relentless mission to rescue a mayoral candidate’s son from the criminal underworld in Chinatown”), and revealed that, much like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, and Carry-On before it, Havoc is a Christmas action movie.

Great action movies come to those who wait, and our patience has finally paid off as, after four years, Tom Hardy and The Raid director Gareth Evans’ Netflix thriller Havoc is all set to land on the streamer later this year. Recent rumors claimed that the action outing would be a lengthy 2 hours and 30 minutes long. However, during yesterday’s “Next on Netflix” event, Evans revealed the real runtime. And while it's considerably shorter, this may, in fact, be a good thing.
Responding to the rumors, the filmmaker revealed that, rather than a sprawling action epic, Havoc will instead be a much tighter, fast-paced fist to the face, and clocks in at “a tight as a drum” 1 hour and 45 minutes. Which, rather than spending time on a lot of chatter, should mean that Hardy and Evans will hit the ground running when Havoc lands on Netflix in the spring. Check...

But this latest update certainly suggests that it will have been worth the wait. While we have known the plot and the cast for some time, action fans have had to wait patiently for any other information or updates, with this new insight potentially revealing the long-awaited thriller’s epic runtime.
According to World of Reel, various outlets, including IMDb Pro, now have Havoc listed with a runtime of 2 hours 30 minutes, matching Evans’ 2014 martial arts epic The Raid 2. If this is accurate, it should give Hardy and Evans plenty of time to deliver what promises to be a modern classic of the genre as the Oscar-nominee and Venom star takes to the streets as a “bruised detective” who finds himself entering...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the movies mentioned in this articleThere aren't many names you can associate with the world of horror more than the great Stephen King. The Portland, Maine-born author's work has been adapted into various TV shows and movies, and his writing isn't showing many signs of slowing down either. King’s ability to surprise, amaze, and bring us both terror, and solace, remains unsurpassed.
Since Carrie hit cinemas in 1976, Stephen King adaptations have been a regular occurrence for movie-goers. Longlegs director Osgood Perkins' new movie, The Monkey, is based on one of his short stories, and it promises to have Itchy & Scratchy-level violence. However, his influence is so great that many films have been made that are blatant rip-offs of King's work.
Fright Night (1985) It May Not Be A Copy Of King's Work, But You Can Definitely See His Influence

You may not even be aware that Oscar nominee and Venom star Tom Hardy has already filmed an action thriller for Netflix directed by the filmmaker behind the martial arts masterpiece The Raid. If you were not aware, allow me to say that again: Tom Hardy is leading an action thriller from the director of The Raid. Titled Havoc, Hardy reportedly finished filming more than three years ago, but we still do not know when it will debut on the streaming platform.
Thankfully, we may at least now have some idea. Director Gareth Evans, who has also helmed Merantau, The Raid 2, and Apostle, took to Instagram a few months ago to reveal that Havoc will (hopefully) hit Netflix in the first quarter of 2025. See what Evans had to say about the production of the action movie below.
Only the most glamorous of locations. But working with the best of friends.
