Good Newzz
Starring Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh, Kiaran Advani
Directed by Raj Mehta
Good Newzz could have been our very own Only You, the British drama directed by Harry Wootliff about a young couple desperately trying to have a baby. Instead this Karan Johar production reeks of shallowness and a screenplay that clearly wants us to believe it has more to say that it actually does.
Good Newzz is basically a one-line joke stretched into two hours of quips and kicks, the latter happening in the wombs of the two female protagonists after they both get pregnant with the wrong man’s sperm. That’s the joke on which hinges the tedious torrent of tongue-wagging, most of it devoted to showcasing Akshay Kumar’s comic timing, which is no doubt admirable. But then there is a time and place for everything including comic timing.
So tell us,...

There is something sinisterly dishonourable about honorable killing. Films on the theme, notably Nagraj Manjule’s Sairat (which does appear overrated in hindsight and which serves as the current film’s main source of inspiration) and its poor remake Dhadak have attempted to capture the sheer barbarism of the act of killing love by butchering lovers.
I think this oddly entitled film succeeds in putting across the theme with a shudder of disgust and dismay. There is a sense of dread running through the narrative as the privileged upperclass girl Janhvi (newcomer Jyoti Kapoor) elopes with the underprivileged sugarcane juice vendor Sonu (debutant Bhavesh Kumar).
The lovers are callow, clumsy and shortsighted. There is a fantastic sequence post-interval where a sexually experienced woman (played with gusto by Neha Joshi) wonders why the young...

Badhaai Ho
Starring Gajaraj Rao, Neena Gupta, Ayushmaan Khurrana, Sanya Malhotra, Surekha Sikri
Directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma
Stop right now and do yourself a favour. Go see Badhaai Ho. You will come out smling but also deeply moved by the artless charm of that great big universe known as the Indian Muddle Class, and I do mean ‘muddle’ where so many contradictory cultural, religious and political forces co-exist uneasily and yet without friction.
Some such controlled chaos defines the world that the Kaushik family inhabits with such fluent ownership. We’ve seen an abundance of commendable comedies on the Delhi’s confounded middleclass such as Dibakar Bannerjee’s Khosla Ka Ghosla and Habib Faisal’s Do Dooni Chaar. But none so delectably oblivious of its responsibilities of pinning down the characters to their cultural canvas.
We meet the family….rather we run into them as though their existence does not depend on our attention.

It is settled, sealed and dusted now for filmmaker Kunal Kohli and writer Jyoti Kapoor. When Kunal's acting debut for Phir Se seemed under threat, courtesy Jyoti alleging plagiarism charges against him for similarities with another story written by her, it seemed that the film had met a deadlock. Even though the promo of the film had been unveiled quite some back, everything came to a standstill when the matter reached court. Well, not anymore as Kunal is free to release the film now. In return, Jyoti would be paid an amount of Rs. 25 lakhs as settlement. This is as per the decision that has been taken at the Supreme Court. "I am happy as now we all can move on," says Kunal who took the Court's suggestion of 'mutual settlement' in his stride and agreed to the logistics, "The Court did make it clear that the film's release could...

Few weeks ago, Kunal Kohli found himself in the eye of a storm when writer Jyoti Kapoor filed a suit against the Kohli for copyright infringement stating that the story of Kunal's film Phir Se was inspired by one of her scripts. Post the filing, the court had levied an interim stay on the release of the film Phir Se featuring Kunal Kohli and Jennifer Winget. However now we hear that the Bombay High Court has vacated the interim stay on the release of the film.
In a judgment passed by the appeal bench presided over by justices V M Kanade and B P Colabawalla, the court vacated the interim stay granted by a single bench of the high court few months ago on the film's release after it found prima facie similarities between this film's script and another movie R.S.V.P. However, the court has also directed...

Earlier this year, filmmaker Kunal Kohli found himself embroiled in a legal battle with writer Jyoti Kapoor, after the latter claimed that that Kunal's forthcoming film Phir Se had been plagiarized from her work. In the ensuing battle the verdict kept tilting, but never settling the issue. Now we hear that the court has ruled to delay the release of the film till a final verdict is reached. Tweeting about the same Kunal Kohli posted, "What I have learnt from this experience is that the free exchange of ideas is no longer permissible and I would go a step further to say it expressly prohibited. The debate on copyright and plagiarism is settled, it is neither. The industry has to move towards a more closed and protective environment with regards to work in progress. What is left to be decided is merely one principal aspect, what is the value of...

Bollywood churns out on average 120 plus films a year, with 2014 reaching 142. So to think all of them will go down in history as being successful is rather naive. But what about the ones we thought would work wonders but came up short? The ones that left us thinking, “Why was this allowed past the editing board”? Even ones that somehow managed to cha-ching the money registers sky high. 2014 had its fair share of films that fit all these categories. BollySpice brings you the biggest disappointments of 2014.

A.R.Murugadoss blew everyone’s mind when he told a tale of an anterograde amnesia patient desperately seeking revenge for the murder of his girlfriend in Ghajini. Yet when it came to a follow up film, one could say Holiday fell short of all the trimmings to recreate the magic. The writer in Murugadoss failed to see the shortcomings of his story,...

Jyoti Kapoor, co-writer of Daawat-e-Ishq, was miffed when she saw the First Look of the film called Phir Se and accused Kunal Kohli of plagiarism. In fact, Jyoti even filed a complaint with the Fwa (Film Writer's Association) alleging that Kunal had copied the story she had written a year ago. And now, it seems that the Dispute Settlement Committee of the association has passed the judgment in favour of Jyoti. Jyoti Kapoor, who is thrilled about it not only expressed her happiness but even claimed that justice has prevailed. From what we hear, it seems, that some aspects of Kunal's script bear a resemblance to Jyoti's, and considering that the two met a year ago, and Kunal had access to the latter's script, the committee decided that filmmaker Kohli's work was influenced by Jyoti's script. Apparently, Jyoti had registered the script with Fwa and had presented it to Kohli...

Filmmaker Kunal Kohli recently expressed his new found love for acting and the director is all set for his debut film Phir Se. However, even before the release of the teaser of the film, Phir Se has become a victim of the controversy. Recently, Jyoti Kapoor, co-writer of Daawat-e-Ishq claimed that the story of Phir Se was written by her and accused Kunal Kohli of plagiarism. She further added that she had approached the Film Writers Association (Fwa) with the script and also filed a complaint against the filmmaker turned actor. She has stated that she had narrated the story of the film to Kunal, when the two met last year. The makers of Phir Se are miffed with her and have decided to take action against it. A source close to Kunal says, "While the writer has approached the Film Writers Association claiming that she narrated the script to Kohli over a year ago,...
