Soubin Shahir and Basil Joseph in Pravinkoodu Shappu (2025)
Pravinkoodu Shappu (2025) Movie Review: A Stylishly Rustic Agatha Christie-esque Whodunit
Soubin Shahir and Basil Joseph in Pravinkoodu Shappu (2025)
Malayalam dark comedy thriller “Pravinkoodu Shappu” marks an eye-catching debut for writer-director Sreeraj Sreenivasan. Set in the pastoral landscape of rural Kerala, this whodunit niftily works with Agatha Christie-esque twists with a fair amount of absurd humor. Starting right from the opening scene, the film revels in its ambitiously eccentric setup and crafts a fairly engrossing, if not entirely original, mystery. And it does that with style, with some fantastic action pieces that show the potential of the debuting filmmaker.

The script, written by Sreenivasan, replaces the British Cottagecore mood of Christie’s stories with the crass and brash vibe of a village toddy (local palm wine) shop. Sreenivasan takes a passionately meticulous care in setting up the murder in the preposterously hilarious liquor shop setup, where drunken machismo is just a shove away. He is so fascinated by the absurdity of the murder premise that he finds excuses...

Pravinkoodu Shappu Ott Release Date: When & Where To Watch Basil Joseph’s Dark Comedy Thriller Online?
Image
When & Where To Stream Basil Joseph’s Pravinkoodu Shappu? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Pravinkoodu Shappu had a vast amount of pre-release hype. In 2024, almost all the films Basil Joseph was part of were financially successful. The only movie that didn’t live up to the mark was Cup, though even that had an 8.5 IMDb rating. So, in 2025, with his first film of the year, everyone expected another super hit.

However, it unfortunately didn’t live up to the hype. While it wasn’t a complete disaster, the film received generally negative reviews from critics. The audience, however, was a bit more positive towards it. Now that it is coming to Ott, it will reach a wider audience.

Pravinkoodu Shappu: Plot

Pravinkoodu Shappu is a black comedy, locked-room murder mystery crime thriller. Eleven people were drinking and playing cards in a toddy shop (toddy being an alcoholic beverage). The following day,...

Pravinkoodu Shappu: Everything You Need To Know About The Locked-Room Murder Mystery Starring Soubin Shahir, Basil Joseph, & Chemban Vinod Jose
Image
Locked-Room Murder Mystery (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Basil Joseph, widely celebrated for his directorial prowess and acting skills, has been focusing more on his acting career in recent years, temporarily stepping away from the director’s chair. With an impressive box-office record, six out of his seven films last year were hits, including three in which he played the lead role.

In an interview with OTTplay, Basil expressed his desire to break free from typecast roles often designed for family audiences. While he is keen on experimenting with diverse characters, he also emphasized his commitment to delivering a “minimum guarantee” experience for his audience.

Speaking about his latest film, Pravinkoodu Shappu, Basil shared how the project pushed him to grow as an actor. Portraying a police officer with a distinct Thrissur accent, he spent extensive hours in the dubbing studio to make his performance as authentic as possible. He also highlighted...

‘Manjummel Boys’ Review: A Beautifully Made Engrossing Emotional Drama
Image
Malayalam filmmaker Chidambaram‘s sophomore film, Manjummel Boys, is based on a true story. Even though true stories provide an essential template to weave the story around, they also restrict the filmmaker from broadening his creativity. In Manjummel Boys, however, Chidambaram found a poignant plot and marvellously blends it with the cinematic sensibilities of the audience.

From its ordinary cookie-cutter introduction scenes, this film quickly transforms into a gripping emotional drama in no time. The film revolves around the members of a local club in Manjummel in Kochi. Located in the shadow of Ernakulam’s industrial belt, Manjummel is a quaint town. Its skyline is dotted with the smokestacks billowing black smoke. Manjummel Boys – ten ordinary, easy-going boys – are in their early twenties. They all work in and around Manjummel’s burgeoning small factories. They drink without care, dance at uninvited local weddings, and believe, like every other boy gang in the history of civilization,...

‘Theatre and films satisfy me in very different ways’: Darshana Rajendran to Tnm
Image
InterviewMalayalam actor Darshana Rajendran, who has been proving herself afresh film after film, talks to Tnm about her transition from playing the protagonist’s ‘friend’ to doing lead roles, her theatre background, and more.CrisPhoto credit - Aishwarya AshokInteresting thing about Darshana Rajendran, an actor who keeps proving herself afresh film after film, is that she comes off as exactly the kind of person she has just played. In the beginning, when she made shorter appearances in Malayalam movies, you would take her for a supportive friend who hears you out, keeps you company in dark moments, and lets you lie down on her lap and sings to you. When she appeared in grander roles, you saw her as a tragic character that dies of a virus, a young woman trapped in sex trafficking, a lover ending up deserted in a haunted house or the depths of a forest. Film Review: Joji (2021) by Dileesh Pothan
Image
Right when I was getting fed up with modern Malayalam cinema, I took the advice of many who urged me to watch this, based-on-”Macbeth” film and the result definitely justified the suggestion.

Joji, an engineering dropout, along with elder brothers Jomon and Jaison lead a life of fear under their dominating father Kuttappan, the owner of a rather large estate, who, despite his 74 years of age, is intensely well-built and quite brutal, particularly towards Joji, whom he considers a failure. Jomon, an alcoholic divorcee, aids Kuttappan in agricultural affairs, while Jaison manages their businesses in town. Jaison’s wife Bincy concludes the “council” while Jomon’s teenage son also lives in the estate, with these two also sharing a strong relationship with Joji, essentially the only ones who take him seriously. However, when Kuttappan suffers a stroke, matters of inheritance come to the fore, while the...

Film Review: Kumbalangi Nights (2019) by Madhu C. Narayanan
Image
“There’s a Shammi in every one of us.” This was said by Shyam Pushkaran, the writer of “Kumbalangi Nights” about the villain of the film. Anyone from Kerala or the whole India itself who watches the film will agree on that. “Kumbalangi Nights” shows a villain who has been portrayed as the image of masculinity among the common man, who thrives on his patriarchal power for decades in cinema. But that is just the tip of the iceberg; the film has a lot to say through a simple story that leaves you with a smile at the end.

Kumbalangi Nights is about the lives of four brothers Saji (Soubin Shahir), Bobby (Shane Nigam), Bonny (Sreenath Bhasi) and Franky (Mathew Thomas) from the fishing hamlet of Kumbalangi and how their lives change with the entry of some characters into their lives. The four brothers live in a...

‘5 Sundarikal’ to ‘Mamangam’: A list of Malayalam films that have identical titles
Image
MollywoodThe films could be remakes of older films or bear absolutely no connection to its predecessor.Tnm StaffPoster of Mamankam (1979)/ Courtesy - m3db.com and Mamangam (2019)Just as the recent Malayalam film Nayattu was about to release, a Google search of the title threw up another 1980 film by the same name. Starring Jayan, it had released 11 days after the actor’s death as a result of a daredevil stunt in another film. Both the Nayattus tell police stories but have no other similarities. It’s not the first time that the title of an earlier film was reused years later for a film with absolutely no connection to its predecessor. Critic B Vijayakumar writes on Malayalam Music and Movie Encyclopaedia that Sthree (1970) was perhaps the first such film to have a repeated title. Another film called Sthree had released 20 years earlier (in 1950), as an adaptation of a play by the same name.

Watch: What went into composing the soundtrack of Fahadh Faasil’s ‘Joji’

‘Nayattu’ review: Joju, Kunchacko, Nimisha are excellent in a tightly packed film

ReviewThe film talks about the difficult situation that the police are placed in within the system, but also has a few problematic stances.CrisOn their way to a house in Piravom, a senior policeman explains to his subordinate that they are going on a “quotation” work – a euphemism for beating up people on assignment. “Even goons have the freedom to say yes or no to a quotation work, but we don’t,” says he, smiling pitifully. A young man had visited the house the night before to give a gift to a young woman living there. The woman happened to be related to a minister. The minister wanted action against the man. So, the policemen have to go to the house and create evidence that the man tried to burn it, and accuse him in a case. It is a short sequence in Nayattu (Hunt), quietly setting the premise of...

'Joji' review: Fahadh and Dileesh Pothan deliver a brilliant adaptation of 'Macbeth'
Image
Review'Macbeth' is known as 'the cursed play' in theatre circles and Dileesh Pothan's film comes at a cursed time, making perfect use of the setting.Sowmya RajendranIn theatre circles, Shakespeare's Macbeth is known as 'the cursed play'. It is tradition not to call the play by its original name and refer to it instead with names like 'The Scottish Play'. Legend has it that the incantations of the witches that trigger Macbeth's ambition, were so powerful that the first ever performance of Macbeth was full of accidents, including the death of the actor who played Lady Macbeth. Superstition or not, it is still a tradition that is practised by many theatre groups. Dileesh Pothan's Joji, inspired by Macbeth and written by Syam Pushkaran, is set in what we can call a cursed time. A pandemic that has forced people to wear masks, stay inside the house, with the threat of death looming over us.
