Vacation movie review: stay home
All homophobic, xenophobic, scatological grossout, with some rape and pedophilia “jokes” for flavor. How did this happen? I’m “biast” (pro): have hazy good memories of the 1980s films…

I’m “biast” (con): …but really tired of reboot fever

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

For those playing along at home, we’ve gone from — in the 1983 movie Vacation — the comedic stylings of Harold Ramis (director), John Hughes (screenwriter), and Chevy Chase (star) to — in this new sequel/reboot — the desperate flailings of John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein (writer-directors) and Ed Helms (star). Vacation is yet another example of screenwriters with no experience directing features being given the keys to a studio film, which is one of those great Hollywood tricks that defies all sense. And never mind the directing job! Daley and Goldstein are counterindicated just to write the script alone: they...

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
'Mission: Impossible 5' Takes Top Box Office Spot with $56M
Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible (1996)
Paramount's Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation took the box office by storm this weekend, taking in an estimated $56 million for an easy win over New Line's comedy remake Vacation. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation took in an impressive $14,156 per-screen average from 3,956 theaters this weekend, propelling it to victory over Vacation, which took in just $14.8 million in its first weekend in theaters. The opening weekend tally is the second highest for the action-packed franchise, behind Mission: Impossible 2's $57.8 million opening weekend back in 2000.

The opening weekend take is also the third-highest opening weekend for star Tom Cruise, behind War of the Worlds ($64.9 million) and Mission: Impossible 2. Over 85% of the audience were over the age of 25, setting up an interesting showdown next weekend with 20th Century Fox's superhero movie, Fantastic Four, which is tracking very well with males under the age of 25. Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation was released in 369 IMAX theaters this weekend,...

Vacation Review
Vacation – another discombobulated assortment of immaturity, nostalgic pandering and weightless storytelling. The slow death of mainstream comedy, if you will. Every stupid graffitied phallus and perverse lake of shit is calculated with the cheapest of intentions, because juvenile potty humor seems to have become an underwhelming norm across comedy’s repetitive landscape. John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein promise early on that their unwarranted reboot will stand completely on its own (through yet Another meta-laced conversation), but their efforts are less convincing than Randy Quaid’s fake sex tape. Why? Because No Vacation movie has treated its audience with this little respect. And Vegas Vacation is nothing to brag about, I might add.

In this year’s vacation-from-hell comedy, Rusty Griswold has transformed from a tall, lanky nutcase (played most recently by Ethan Embry) to his All-American-Joe fate as an economy airline pilot (played now by Ed Helms...

Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Vacation Review Roundup: A "Depressing Remake" or "Raucous Delight"?
Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Judging from most of these reviews, you might need to take a trip of your own after seeing Vacation. In the National Lampoon's Vacation remake, the Griswold clan—now headed by Ed Helms and Christina Applegate—take a page out of Chevy Chase's playbook and embark on a cross-country adventure with their two sons, played by Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins, to family fun amusement park Wally World. But just as any Griswold family voyage goes, the trip is far from smooth sailing. Enter ridiculous antics: including (but not limited to) Chris Hemsworth's particularly long schlong, a fiery car wreck and a hot-tubbing experience in raw sewage. Vacation is rated R...

Vacation (2015) – The Review
Oh, can ya’ hear it? That infectious, steady beat emanating from your local multiplex’s state of the art speakers? Is that Lindsay Buckingham imploring you to join him and cruise down the “Holiday Road”? Why of course it is! It’s time again to load up and head out on another Vacation! Oh, but hold up, this isn’t just another excursion, we’re about to switch lanes and take a different route, via the “sequel/reboot highway”. First, lets; a take a glance at our rearview mirror. In the late seventies, the National Lampoon magazine (the counter-culture’s humor monthly of choice) ran a terrific prose article called “Vacation 58″ written by freelancer John Hughes (yes, the future “Brat Pack” patron saint). Jump to 1978 when the mag exploded into movie houses with the smash National Lampoon’S Animal House. The studios desperately wanted more hit flicks from Nl. Unfortunately...

A ‘Vacation’ in Hell
Vacation

Written & Directed by Jonathan M. Goldstein & John Francis Daley

USA, 2015

It’s taken almost seven months, but one movie has finally emerged from the dreary pack as the worst of 2015. That film is Vacation, and it’s absolutely dreadful. Writer-directors Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley have created something so loathsome that each ticket sold should include a complementary shower. Desperate, hateful, and stridently unfunny, this vacation in Hell bypasses ‘lowest common denominator’ and plummets straight to zero. If you miss one movie this summer, make that movie Vacation.

The original National Lampoon’s Vacation and subsequent ‘80s sequels (let’s just forget Vegas Vacation, shall we?) perfectly straddled the fine line between buffoonery and sincerity. We followed the hapless exploits of super-father Clark Griswold in his unending quest to achieve familial perfection. We cringed at his failures and rejoiced with each fleeting victory. He was the satirical...

Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Review: 'Vacation' runs out of gas long before it reaches its destination
Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
1983's "National Lampoon's Vacation" is a film I have an enormous fondness for, and I have no doubt part of why I feel that way is because of when I saw the film. After all, I was 13 when it came out, and the script by John Hughes felt like it was shockingly transgressive at the time. A few weeks back, I saw the film again for the first time in a while, and while I smiled at most of the familiar scenes and lines, I also saw the film with fresh eyes, and I was struck by the fact that, overall, it's a little shabby. I think Harold Ramis gets great performances out of his entire cast, but as actual filmmaking? It's a step forward from the "held together with bitter tears and cocaine" aesthetic of "Caddyshack," but not a giant step. As an overall series, this is about as...

Film Review: Tartan Prancer – Yes, a Fictional Albanian Car – Steals the Otherwise Borrowed Show in ‘Vacation’
Chicago – Retreads from classics are often as weary as having to write that they are almost never as good as the original. And here we go again with the Ed Helms-led “Vacation,” which fails to capitalize on the beloved Chevy Chase film “National Lampoon’s Vacation” from 1983.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

Lacking the soul and whimsy of the original, this modern-day take on the Harold Ramis and John Hughes classic attempts to recreate the charm with actors who know how to read the lines but don’t embody the characters. And they’re forced to speak within a lazily written story that doesn’t add enough to justify coming back.

The decision by Ed Helms to take his family to Walley World – just like his father (Chevy Chase) did with his family – feels forced for the film to have a reason for being. It feels like it went down like this: “Hey,...

Vacation review
The big screen reboot of National Lampoon's Vacation hits the mark. It's one of the funniest films of the summer...

There’s a sequence near the start of Vacation, the seventh sequel to 1983 comedy National Lampoon’s Vacation – the first since Vegas Vacation in 1997 - where Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) makes a speech to his wife (Christina Applegate) about their planned family getaway being able to stand on its own against that of his own family’s adventures back in the 80s.

As you can imagine the scene, and the film, has no qualms about talking to its audience in this indirect but direct way, telling the viewer who remains sceptical about a modern-day interpretation of the concept that this will be its own thing. Yes, there’s a family, and they too are heading to Walley World in search of unity and reconnection, but rest assured that things will be different.

Vacation Gets A New Red Band Trailer
A new generation of Griswolds hasn’t seemed to dull the beloved Vacation franchise any, as the latest Nsfw trailer shows us, packing in plenty of road trip related shenanigans and introducing us to the wonderfully mean spirited Kevin Griswold (Steele Stebbins), whose campaign of terror against his brother should make for petty of laughs. Released: July 29th (U.S.)/ August 21st (Irl/U.K.) Synopsis: Following in his father’s footsteps and hoping for some much-needed family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Helms) surprises his wife, Debbie (Applegate), and their two sons with a cross-country trip back to America’s "favorite family fun park," Walley World.

Rusty Griswold goes back to Walley World in the red-band trailer for Vacation
The Griswolds are back, and this time it’s Rusty’s turn to take on the good old-fashioned Griswold family vacation to Walley World.

The red-band trailer for Vacation was just released, and it’s just as outrageous as we would expect from a movie involving the Griswolds going on vacation. Little Rusty Griswold is all grown up, and he’s got a wife and kids of his own to embarrass.

Ed Helms stars as adult Rusty Griswold, with Christina Applegate playing his wife. Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins play the next generation of Griswold kids, along with Vacation franchise newcomers Leslie Mann and Chris Hemsworth as Rusty’s sister Audrey and her husband.

Of course, this wouldn’t be a true Vacation movie without the original Griswold parents. Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are back as Clark and Ellen, and we can’t wait to hear the advice...

'Vacation' Red Band Trailer Gets Raunchy with the Griswolds
Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
In exactly one week, fans will see a new generation of Griswold's journey to Walley World in New Line Cinema's Vacation reboot. The studio has released a second red band trailer which makes it clear that this is definitely not a "family-friendly" trip, chocked full of R-rated language, most of which comes from the youngest cast member. We've seen in the previous trailers that there is a unique reversal of the sibling dynamic, with the younger brother Kevin (Steele Stebbins) bullying his older, more sensitive brother James (Skyler Gisondo). This trailer takes the bullying to a new level, in hilarious fashion, with Kevin physically abusing the bigger James and even threatening to shoot him off a horse.

The next generation of Griswolds is at it again-and on the road for another ill-fated adventure. Following in his father's footsteps and hoping for some much-needed family bonding, a grown-up Rusty Griswold (Ed Helms) surprises his wife,...

The film also stars Christina Applegate, Leslie Mann, Chris Hemsworth, Steele Stebbins, Beverly D’Angelo, Skyler Gisondo, Nick Kroll, Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Regina Hall, and Keegan-Michael Key.

Vacation opens in theaters on July 31st.

So, yes, it's returning to where it all started and based on this trailer there will be more than just a few callbacks to the original films which will either play as incredibly stale or as a loving homage, but this thing is going to have to bring more to the table than simply bringing back old jokes if it hopes to land with today's audiences. Also in the cast...

National Lampoon's Vacation Reboot: Check Out the Griswolds Wandering Far From Walley World
Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
The Griswolds are heading back to Walley World in this reboot of the 1983 film National Lampoon's Vacation. And it looks like one of their stops, intentionally or not, is in the Mojave Desert. The cast of Vacation, comprised of Ed Helms, Christina Applegate, along with their two on-screen sons, played by Skylar Gisondo and Steele Stebbins, was seen on the Mojave Desert set Wednesday filming. Similar to the original film, the reboot is centered around now-grown up Rusty Griswold taking his family on a cross-country trip back to America's "favorite family fun park," Walley World. From the looks of these pics, it looks like this on-screen family is set to be stuck in a desert dilemma,...

The 'Vacation' Reboot Is Shooting Now, and Leslie Mann May Join
That long-rumored "Vacation" reboot is a rumor no more: The film has finally begun production in Georgia.

The flick stars Ed Helms as a grown-up Rusty Griswold, and Christina Applegate plays his wife, Debbie. According to the film's official plot synopsis, Rusty is "Following in his father's footsteps and hoping for some much-needed family bonding," so he "surprises his wife ... and their two sons with a cross-country trip back to America's 'favorite family fun park,' Walley World."

And while nothing is official yet, actress Leslie Mann is reportedly in talks to join the flick, too, as Rusty's sister, Audrey Griswold. The role would see the adult Audrey married to a man described by The Hollywood Reporter as "an up-and-coming anchorman named Stone Crandall."

Crandall will be played by Chris Hemsworth, Charlie Day will play a river rafting guide, and Skyler Gisondo ("Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb...

Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Christie Brinkley in National Lampoon's Vacation (1983)
Just one day after adding Chris Hemsworth and Charlie Day to the cast of their Vacation reboot, New Line Cinema has brought on Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins to play the sons of Rusty Grisworld (Ed Helms).

John Francis Daley, who makes his directorial debut alongside his filmmaking partner Jonathan M. Goldstein, had this to say in a statement about finding these young actors after a nationwide casting search.

"The Griswolds are an iconic movie family and we knew we needed stellar actors to play the kids of the next generation. After a nationwide search, we found them in Skyler Gisondo and Steele Stebbins."

Jonathan M. Goldstein also added the following statement about the new cast members.

"And it also doesn't hurt that their names are Skyler and Steele. Those are pretty badass names."

The plot centers on Rusty, who decides to surprise his wife Debbie (Christina Applegate) and their...

A Haunted House 2 review
Review Ron Hogan 21 Apr 2014 - 16:05

Marlon Wayans is back with another spoof of the horror genre, but it's one that's really, really not worth your time...

Just when you thought it was safe to go back onto movie theaters, Marlon Wayans is back and taking aim at the horror genre yet again with yet another spoof movie. Malcolm Johnson (Marlon Wayans) survived the events of A Haunted House, and a year after the possession of Kisha (Essence Adkins), he's found a new girlfriend named Megan (Jaime Pressly) and he's moved into a fancy new house in the suburbs with Megan's children Becky (Ashley Rickards) and Wyatt (Steele Stebbins).

As it turns out, you can't kill your problems in a car wreck, even if your problem is a possessed woman. Malcolm moves into his new house and the problems immediately start. There's a creepy doll, a box that drives Becky insane,...

Interview: Marlon Wayans Talks Career, Comedy Franchises & Studying to Play Richard Pryor ('Haunted House 2' Opens Today)
With A Haunted House 2, Marlon Wayans takes his brand of comedy to the same edgy extremes as the original. This film sees his character Malcolm moving into yet another demon-possessed house with a new family (Jaime Pressly, Awkward’s Ashley Rickards, and Steele Stebbins), for a series of shenanigans spoofing horror movies like The Conjuring and Insidious, and again involving Wayans in an extended sex scene with an inanimate object (this time, a creepy-looking doll named Abigail). The movie was reportedly made at the insistence of the studio, who Wayans says "chased us down" to make a sequel after the success of the first film. The final product is largely a vehicle for Wayans'...

A Haunted House 2 Review
It’s often said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result, which is exactly why I left A Haunted House 2 channeling my inner Michael Bluth while muttering, “I don’t know what I expected.” There was a small, microscopic bit of hope that optimistically motivated my legs to physically walk into my screening, but within mere repetitive minutes, I realized a maddening case of déjà vu was about to hit.

While Mike Flanagan’s newly released Oculus is about a mirror that reflects your inner demons, A Haunted House 2 provides a mirror image watch that’s doubly paralyzing based on the sheer audacity of so many recycled similarities – but honestly, this review won’t matter worth a damn. Everyone who saw A Haunted House and made it financially successful will flood theatrical screenings of its sequel and...
