Former Directors’ Fortnight artistic director will oversee international selection.

Former Cannes Directors’ Fortnight artistic director Edouard Waintrop has joined the Bordeaux International Festival of Independent Film (Le Festival International du Film Indépendant de Bordeaux – Fifib), where he will oversee the international selection,

Natacha Seweryn has also come on board to pilot the festival’s “Avant-garde Selection”. Seweryn has collaborated with a number of festivals over the years including the respected first-film focused festival Premiers Plans in the Loire region city of Angers and Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

The rebooted Cairo Film Festival has wrapped with the event’s top prize, the Golden Pyramid, going to “A Twelve-Year Night,” Uruguay’s candidate for the foreign-language Oscar. The award, presented Thursday night, came with a $20,000 check that was given to the producers of “Night,” a harrowing drama about Uruguay’s former military dictatorship.

Thai auteur Phuttiphing Aroonpheng’s hypnotic “Manta Ray” and Ukranian director Segei Loznitsa’s dystopian “Donbass,” about the degradation of civil society in the fake news era, tied for Silver Pyramid honors. The Bronze Pyramid for best first or second work went to British helmer Jamie Jones for his debut, “Obey,” a tragic love story set amid the 2011 London riots.

The Fortress cinematographer Ji-yong Kim won the Golden Frog in main competition at Camerimage, the international film festival for the art of cinematography.

The 26th edition was held in Bydgoszcz, Poland from November 10 - 17.

The Fortress, directed by Dong-hyuk Hwang, tells the story of the second Manchu invasion of Korea in 1636. Ji-yong Kim was also awarded the best cinematographer award at this year’s Asian Film Awards.

Polish cinematographer Lukasz Zal won the Silver Frog for Pawel Pawlikowski’s black-and-white drama Cold War, Poland’s official foreign language Oscar entry.

South Korean cinematographer Kim Ji-yong won the EnergaCamerimage fest top prize, the Golden Frog, on Saturday for the sweeping imagery of his Renaissance-era war story “The Fortress” by director Hwang Dong-Hyuk. Juror David Gropman, a production designer, praised the film’s “staggering beauty and epic scale.”

Poland’s own rising-star Dp Lukasz Zal won the Silver Frog for the crisp, monochrome look of period love story “Cold War” by Pawel Pawlikowski while Alfonso Cuaron, who wrote, directed and filmed the richly atmospheric black-and-white film “Roma,” named for the Mexico City neighborhood where he grew up, scored the Bronze Frog.

The prizes, handed out at the Opera Nova music hall in Bydgoszcz, Poland, capped a week of top cinematography work in 10 competitions, an experience fest director Marek Zydowicz described as a great success despite “crisis situations” during the week, which included the brief arrest of cinematographer Matthew Libatique on suspicion of assault.

One of my favorite traditions for Halloween weekend has become Insomniac’s Escape: Psycho Circus, a two-day Halloween festival and freak show that transforms the Nos Events Center in San Bernardino, California into a devilish playground where attendees can immerse themselves in endless festive frights while checking out over 65 of the best electronic music acts performing all weekend on four different horror-themed stages.

As someone who attends a variety of electronic festivals throughout the year, Escape: Psycho Circus is one of the best, and their Escape Asylum Halloween maze is one of the most enjoyable attractions I’ve ever experienced. The fact that they put you into a straitjacket upon entry only adds to the terror and hysteria you experience as you make your way through the haunt’s 32,000 square feet of creepy shocks and jolts.

Top honors at the 17th annual Tribeca Film Festival have gone to Diane for the Founders Award for Best U.S. Narrative Feature, Smuggling Hendrix for Best International Narrative Feature, and Island of the Hungry Ghosts for Best Documentary Feature. On the acting side, Alia Shawkat won Best Actress in a U.S. Narrative Feature Film for Miguel Arteta’s Duck Butter, and Jeffrey Wright took the Best Actor honor for O.G.

First-time narrative director and writer Kent Jones (who is also the executive director of the New York Film Festival) won two prizes at Tribeca for Diane, and the film starring Mary Kay Place won three. Estelle Parsons, Andrea Martin, Deirdre O’Connell and Jake Lacy co-star in the film, about a widowed, altruistic seventysomething woman whose life is dictated by the needs of others, and who finds herself forced to look at her own identity.

This movie, from first-time feature director Jamie Jones, takes place amid the London riots of 2011 and the white noise of rage and desperation they both caused and fed off, as the police shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham triggered angry protests that degenerated into nationwide violence and looting.

As the title implies, the film is about power. It is about submitting to the imperatives of sex, friendship and family, and asks what it was like to live in that atmosphere, to inhale its microbes of anger and fear, and to contend with the decibel count of aggression on the streets. The festival, which earlier announced it will open with documentary Love, Gilda, on April 18 will close on April 29 with The Fourth Estate - the first episode of Liz Garbus' documentary following The New York Times' coverage of President Trump's first year in power.

The Centerpiece Gala will be one of the 74 world premieres featuring across the programme - Drake Doremus’ sci-fi romance Zoe, which stars Ewan McGregor, Léa Seydoux, Rashida Jones, and Theo James. British filmmakers in the competition line-up including Karen Gillan - whose The Party's Just Beginning recently had its world premiere in Glasgow - and Jamie Jones' Obey, which is set during the 2011 London riots.
