The Best Horror Movies Streaming This Month Are Ghost Movies (October 2024)
Image
It's finally here! October, the best month of the year, especially if you're a horror movie fan. Any time of year is the right time to watch a horror movie, but there's something extra special about watching horror movies as we draw closer and closer to Halloween. And to help you get into the spirit of the season, this month's horror streaming roundup is all about ghost movies! Not just haunted house movies, mind you — but movies about ghosts and all their spooky antics. I like all horror subgenres. Vampires? Hell yes. Slashers? Absolutely. Monsters? Yep! But of all the various types of horror movies, movies about ghosts are my personal favorite. I can't say that I believe in ghosts, but like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. Until some sort of ghostly evidence presents itself to me, I'll stick with the movies. So grab your candy corn, carve a pumpkin or two,...

Annabelle Movies Ranked
Image
Annabelle! She's everyone's favorite hideous terror doll! The ugly porcelain figure has appeared in several "Conjuring" movies, first popping up in the original "The Conjuring" before starring in her own film series. And, just to make things extra scary, she's real. Sort of. The "real" Annabelle is actually a rather harmless-looking Raggedy Ann doll, but that wouldn't fly for the movies. So when it came time for Annabelle to make her big screen debut, she was redesigned into the grinning ghoul we all know and love/loathe. In honor of Annabelle and all her horrific mayhem, we've decided to go ahead and rank all of the "Annabelle" movies. For the sake of brevity, we'll only be counting the three films with "Annabelle" in the title, since those are officially her films. So let's get to it! And remember: if someone brings you home an ugly monster doll, just chuck that...

12 Great Movie Villains That Never Actually Killed Anyone
Image
Great movie villains that never killed anyone remind viewers that villainy goes beyond murder, as the threat of death can be just as powerful. These villains, such as Phil Burbank and Annabelle, may not physically harm or kill anyone, but their actions and behavior still make them memorable and worthy adversaries. Some villains, like Dolores Umbridge and Mrs. Danvers, may not directly kill anyone, but they are responsible for other deaths and exhibit manipulation and cruelty in their own ways.

Great movie villains that never actually killed anyone are cut from a different cloth. They remind viewers that killing is just one aspect of the wide spectrum of villainy. Indeed, just the threat of death can be powerful enough to create a worthwhile and memorable villain for audiences. Even if people actually died because of the movie's antagonist, their choice of avoiding any actual wetwork gives the viewer more insight into the villain's motivations.

So Cold the River opens with former hotshot documentary director Erica Shaw making a slideshow for someone’s funeral. It’s about all the work she can get since one of her films proved a convicted killer’s innocence. Only for him to slaughter his entire family as soon as he was released.

One of those slide shows leads to her being hired by Alyssa Bradford to shoot a biography of her father, Campbell Bradford. With a bottle of Pluto Water, mineral water with alleged healing properties as her only clue, she heads to the town of West Braden Indiana to begin shooting. Once there she quickly realizes this isn’t going to be as easy as it seems when Anne McKinney the self-appointed local historian...

‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Blu-ray Review
Stars: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, Katie Sarife, Michael Cimino, Samara Lee | Written and Directed by Gary Dauberman

Annabelle Comes Home, directed by occasional franchise writer Gary Dauberman, is the latest entry into the ongoing Conjuring property and sets itself just after the events of the first Annabelle feature with the Warrens, played by returning actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, bringing the demonic doll back to their sacred museum for storage. What unfolds is arguably the best story told and the most frightening and impactful horror in the franchise since the first Conjuring feature.

Dauberman’s film is a perfect culmination of the series thus far. Managing to stand out on its own and not a constant barrage of dependable referential tie-ins that most franchises almost seven films deep tend to gravitate towards. Granted, Dauberman pulls out the big guns with the inclusion of famed horror icons the Warrens,...

Annabelle Comes Home and Teenage Horror: A Film Review
*full disclosure: a Blu-ray of this film was provided by the publicity division of Warner Bros. Director: Gary Dauberman. Writers: James Wan and Gary Dauberman. Cast: Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife. Annabelle Comes Home is the third film in the Annabelle series and the seventh film in The Conjuring universe; all three Annabelle films have been written by Gary Dauberman. While this film fan enjoyed Annabelle: Creation (2017), this latest title is very limited in surprises or scares. In the first hour, the scariest incident involves a loud knock at a door. Unfortunately, there is still another fourty-five minutes to go. Even the story is light as a babysitter does her best to look after a young girl, while Mary Ellen's (Madison Iseman) friend unlocks a haunted room. An inanimate doll is now on the loose as the yawntastic action fails to gain steam. Annabelle Comes Home...

Man Dies While Watching Annabelle Comes Home in Thailand Theater
Bonnie Aarons and Madison Wolfe in The Conjuring 2 (2016)
An elderly man in Thailand purchased a ticket to see Annabelle Comes Home, only to later be found dead when the movie was over. Although the deceased man was first reported to be a foreigner, he has since been identified as a 77-year-old British national who was in Thailand on vacation. While it's not clear if he was alone on the trip, he had gone to the cinema by himself, purchasing only a single ticket. Sadly, this would turn out to be the last thing he would ever do.

During the movie, nobody had noticed anything amiss, so it's impossible to say how long the man's body had been sitting there following his sudden death. When the theater lights were turned on after the showing, another patron sitting next to him was shocked to discover he was apparently dead. She immediately called for emergency assistance, and a responding doctor declared him dead on the scene.

Annabelle Comes Home Ending Explained
Daniel Kurland Jun 27, 2019

Everyone's favorite haunted doll is back! So let’s break down the unleashed ending to the latest The Conjuring film, Annabelle Comes Home.

This article contains major Annabelle Comes Home spoilers.

The Conjuring universe may have started with a restrained haunted house story, but it’s since visited haunted monasteries, tapped into Mexican folklore, and teased a whole world of supernatural entities. The Conjuring universe shows no signs of slowing down, but undoubtedly one of the franchise’s most popular characters is the haunted doll, Annabelle. Annabelle Comes Home is the third film in the Annabelle saga and is easily the craziest offering from any of the Conjuring pictures. It even brings The Conjuring’s Ed and Lorraine Warren back into the mix.

This film tells a fairly self-contained story that's neatly sandwiched between other films in the series, but Annabelle Comes Home still throws a lot at its audience.

‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Review: A Highly Concentrated Dose of Series Expectations
After an excitingly popular debut during The Conjuring‘s prologue, the creepily revamped Annabelle doll (its real-life counterpart was actually a Raggedy Anne) earned the title role in the first spin-off of this ever-growing horror universe. That installment left much to be desired with screenwriter Gary Dauberman eventually redeeming himself three years later with Annabelle: Creation, thanks in part to director David F. Sandberg. You might assume this demonic vessel would then be left alone since its tragic trajectory had now been fully drawn from the home of its maker to its ultimate resting place inside Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) and Ed Warren’s (Patrick Wilson) in-house museum of cursed objects. With a third Conjuring film still in production, however, producer James Wan and Dauberman hatched a plan to keep going instead.

The result is a stylistic bridge going by the name Annabelle Comes Home. Until now only Wan’s two...

How a First-Time Director Handled Annabelle Comes Home
Don Kaye Jun 27, 2019

Screenwriter turned director Gary Dauberman on making the horror movie he wanted with Annabelle Comes Home.

After penning Annabelle (2014) and Annabelle: Creation (2017), along with related films The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona, screenwriter Gary Dauberman makes his directorial debut with the third entry in the series, Annabelle Comes Home. The new film takes the story of the malevolent doll -- which acts less like a living entity herself and more as a conduit for all kinds of unearthly spirits and creatures -- back where it started, to the home museum of real-life demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, who we first met in 2013’s The Conjuring.

When Ed and Lorraine (played once again by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) go out of town on a brief overnight trip, they leave their daughter Judy home with her trusted babysitter Mary Ellen. But after Mary Ellen’s troubled...

Annabelle Comes Home Scares Up Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Score
The latest chapter in the ever-growing Conjuring universe is here and the verdict is in. Annabelle Comes Home, based on the early indication from Rotten Tomatoes, may not be at the top of the food chain with this franchise, but it's apparently not half bad! Granted, Rotten Tomatoes is just a general indicator. That said, as far as third entries in a horror spin-off franchise go, this doesn't seem to be a bad bet for those who are looking for a little bit of spooky business at the movies this weekend.

Annabelle Comes Home actually hits theaters today, as Warner Bros. and New Line are looking to get a jump on the competition this weekend. As such, we've already got a critic and audience score. On the critical side, the movie has a decent 64 percent approval rating, with 69 reviews counted. The audience rating is a bit better, currently sitting at 74 percent.

Stars Mckenna Grace, Madison Iseman, and Katie Sarife describe working on the Annabelle Comes Home set.

In Annabelle Comes Home, the third movie to star the malevolent title doll and the latest overall in the ever-growing horror universe based around The Conjuring, little Judy Warren (Mckenna Grace), her babysitter Mary Ellen (Madison Iseman) and Mary Ellen’s friend Daniela (Katie Sarife) are left alone in the house for the evening while Judy’s parents go on an overnight trip.

But Judy’s parents happen to be Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), the world-famous demonologists whose house also happens to contain a museum of all the haunted and forbidden artifacts they’ve collected over the years -- including the most evil of all, Annabelle, who must remain locked away in a special consecrated cabinet.

Over the course of seven films (with an eighth entry filming right now), horror fans have been treated to evil spirits of all different shapes and sizes. Yet, leave it to the littlest demon, Annabelle, to usher in a whole slew of new demons to scare audiences.

Annabelle Comes Home is a rollercoaster ride for fans of “The Conjuring Universe.” It ramps up playfully, and then quickly turns into Annabelle: House Of Horrors. Director Gary Dauberman subverts expectations and delivers more than just the standard creepy doll film that audiences have seen before. Annabelle might be coming home, but it’s the new demons that take center stage and receive the warmest welcome.

Taking a page from John Carpenter’s Halloween, Dauberman’s screenplay smartly keeps the story and the cast small,...

Can ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Keep ‘Conjuring’ Series Hot at the Box Office?
Tom Hanks, Keanu Reeves, Tim Allen, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Christina Hendricks, Keegan-Michael Key, Ally Maki, and Jordan Peele in Toy Story 4 (2019)
While “Toy Story 4” is expected to stay No. 1 at the box office for a second weekend, two smaller budget films will try to carve niches for themselves in between the Pixar film and next week’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” One is Universal/Working Title’s Beatles-inspired comedy “Yesterday,” while the other is Warner Bros. and New Line’s latest installment in the “Conjuring” series, “Annabelle Comes Home.”

“Annabelle” will be the first to enter theaters, opening Tuesday night for previews before opening on 3,525 screens on Wednesday. Warner Bros. is projecting a five-day opening of $30 million, while independent trackers are projecting an opening closer to $40 million. By comparison, the last film in the “Annabelle” series, “Annabelle: Creation,” opened to $35 million over three days in August 2017.

The Twilight Zone (2019)
‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Review: Hello, Evil-Hellspawn Dolly!
The Twilight Zone (2019)
Nestled somewhere in the Evil Doll Hall of Fame between Chuckie and The Twilight Zone‘s Talky Tina, the Conjuring franchise’s resident Satanic toy has enough industry juice to have knocked out three spin-off movies — not bad for a scene-stealing porcelain figure originally used as a supernatural conduit by a Manson-lite cult. (Long story.) Just don’t call it “possessed,” however, if you’re around paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga). “Demons don’t possess things, only people,” they declare, before their car breaks down,...

Annabelle Comes Home Review
In 2014, if someone claimed Annabelle would spawn the ‘Conjurverse’s’ most successful spinoff sequels, I’d’ve gone blue in the face from laughter. Not even Nostradamus could prophesize the leap in quality from Annabelle to Annabelle: Creation, and now Annabelle to Annabelle Comes Home.

Frequent ‘Conjurverse’ screenwriter Gary Dauberman helms this third continuation in the Warrens’ fight against dolly-dearest damnation, which is an absolute monster mashin’ blast. It’s like walking through a high-concept Halloween Horror Nights maze at Universal, and I mean that in the best funhouse way. Dauberman’s screenplay answers that oft-pondered Cabin In The Woods question, as characters unwittingly choose their collective fate, of “What happens if *all* the monsters get loose?” Annabelle isn’t alone, and as depicted, there ain’t no party like an Annabelle party because an Annabelle party don’t stop (the screams).

At this point in the Warrens’ story, Ed...

Annabelle Comes Home Review: Brainless Conjuring Sequel Telegraphs Every Scare
Vera Farmiga, Natalia Safran, Patrick Wilson, Katie Sarife, Mckenna Grace, Samara Lee, Madison Iseman, and Elena Askin in Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Annabelle Comes Home is a brainless sequel that telegraphs every scare. The seventh installment in The Conjuring Universe and third Annabelle film had me laughing out loud for the wrong reasons. Annabelle franchise writer Gary Dauberman steps behind the camera for his feature directorial debut. He delivers a formulaic plot with cookie cutter characters. Annabelle Comes Home is a lame rehash of tired horror movie tropes. Lower your expectations to the basement, where a third of the film takes place.

In a seventies suburb, paranormal investigators Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine (Vera Farmiga) Warren take possession of the demonic doll Annabelle. A priest blesses the porcelain terror before the Warrens' imprison it in a sacred glass cabinet. Annabelle is locked away in their basement, along with other dangerous artifacts the Warrens' have collected. Annabelle becomes an afterthought as time passes by.

Mckenna Grace stars as Judy, the Warrens' ten-year-old daughter.

Annabelle (2014)
Film Review: ‘Annabelle Comes Home’
Annabelle (2014)
In a country that should probably think about renaming itself the American Entertainment State, fan culture now produces an obsessive level of pop scholasticism, one that can parse the rules and details of movies and TV shows as if they were fine points of law. In a review of a horror movie, I once called a character a zombie who was not, technically, a zombie (he didn’t have the precise credentials to be classified as the living dead), and tons of readers called me out on it. I learned my lesson, even though a stubborn part of me still thinks, “If it walks like a zombie, and talks like a zombie…”

There’s a comparable bit of pesky Talmudic niggling woven into the premise of the “Annabelle” films, of which “Annabelle Comes Home” is the third, and maybe the most hyper and generic. Annabelle is one of those creepy...

‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Review: The Best ‘Conjuring’ Spin-Off Brings John Hughes to the Usual Horror Routine
Vera Farmiga, Natalia Safran, Patrick Wilson, Katie Sarife, Mckenna Grace, Samara Lee, Madison Iseman, and Elena Askin in Annabelle Comes Home (2019)
Marvel and Star Wars delivered the biggest event movies of the past decade, but “The Conjuring” franchise has churned along with more confidence and consistency than either of them. James Wan’s 2013 entry set the template in motion, with real-life demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) providing a backdrop for endless jump scares. Having grossed upwards of $1.6 billion, “The Conjuring” universe has proven that sometimes, the most lucrative ideas require less CGI wizardry than spooky silence, and the lingering possibility that something terrifying could break it.

Well, that, and one helluva spooky doll. Annabelle, one of several horror tropes laying within the Warrens’ cabinet of paranormal monstrosities, showed the potential to carry her own creepy spin-off from the very first scene of “The Conjuring.” With “Annabelle” and prequel “Annabelle: Creation,” the stationary figure became a gateway for demonic forces seeking the souls of young children. “Annabelle Comes Home...

Review: Annabelle Comes Home is a True Gift to Fans of The Conjuring Universe
If you had told me years ago that the Annabelle film series would end up being some of the best times I’ve had watching supernaturally infused tales on the big screen, I never would have believed you. And yet, here we are. While I’m not really a big fan of the original Annabelle, I thought David F. Sandberg did a brilliant job of getting the burgeoning franchise back on track with his origin story, Annabelle: Creation, centered around the titular doll’s beginnings.

Now, with Annabelle Comes Home, first-time director (but longtime writer and producer of both The Nun and The Curse of La Llorona) Gary Dauberman gets to show us what he’s made of with this third Annabelle movie that not only does right by the cinematic legacy of the popular otherworldly doll, but also manages to deliver up an experience akin to getting lost inside a thrill-a-minute haunted house,...

Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
Patrick Wilson, Mckenna Grace on Scary Stories From ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ Set
Max von Sydow in The Exorcist (1973)
Tales of spooky occurrences on the sets of horror movies like “The Exorcist” and “Poltergeist” have circulated for years, and it looks like “The Conjuring” franchise is following in their footsteps in that regard. The cast of “Annabelle Comes Home” shared their unnerving stories from set at the film’s premiere on Thursday night at the Regency Village Theatre in Westwood, Calif., but “Conjuring” veteran Patrick Wilson is not afraid of ghosts… or Annabelle dolls.

“That’s because it’s their first movie,” Wilson cracked to Variety on the red carpet when asked if he’d had any freak occurrences on set like his co-stars. The actor has starred as Ed Warren in the horror franchise since 2013 and says he’s pretty immune to the creepiness, usually finding himself trying to talk sense into everyone else.

“I’ll give you a quick synopsis how it works out: Vera [Farmiga, who stars as nm0912933 autoLorraine Warren...
