Bentonville Film Festival: ‘Rosemead,’ ‘The Librarians,’ ‘Sovereign’ Win Awards, Lucy Liu Receives Rising to The Challenge Honor
Image
It’s shaping up as an award-winning summer for actress-producer Lucy Liu.

On Saturday night Liu received the Rising to the Challenge Award at the Bentonville Film Festival in Arkansas, an honor that “recognizes artists who champion storytelling that breaks barriers and broadens representation.”

It wasn’t her only award of the night. Her new drama Rosemead, directed by Eric Lin, won Best Narrative at the 11th edition of the festival chaired by Geena Davis. Liu produced the film and stars as “Irene,” a Chinese immigrant who simultaneously faces a personal health crisis and the alarming descent of her son into schizophrenia.

“Rosemead captures the terrifying realities of motherhood in our contemporary era,” wrote the jury, comprised of filmmaker Marie Jamora (guest artistic director of AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women) and filmmaker Bomani J. Story (The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster). “When culture, society, and healthcare break down,...

Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix, the most decorated track and field athlete of all time, will participate in the festival’s Shaping the Narrative conversation in partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Ingeborg Initiatives. She Runs the World, a documentary about Felix directed by Perri Peltz and Matthew O’Neill, will screen at Bff on Wednesday, June 18.

The festival describes the film as “an impassioned look at the advocacy of Allyson Felix… At the peak of her career, she faced a life-threatening pregnancy—and a 70% pay cut from her sponsor, exposing a sports industry without maternal protections. But Allyson turned adversity into action, redefining what it means to be a champion and sparking a movement far beyond the track. Felix’s rejection of the status quo...

‘Battleground’ Abortion Documentary Picked Up by Abramorama and Roco Films Prior to Awards Run (Exclusive)
Image
Abramorama and Roco Films have co-acquired U.S. distribution rights to Cynthia Lowen’s abortion documentary “Battleground.” The film premiered in the documentary competition category at the Tribeca Festival in June. The doc follows three women in charge of anti-abortion organizations devoted to overturning Roe v. Wade.

Abramorama and Roco Films will co-release “Battleground” in hundreds of theaters across the country beginning Oct. 7 for an official Academy Award qualifying run. The film will also be simultaneously released in schools, non-profit spaces and corporate board rooms, both in-person and virtually. In addition, impact agencies Together Films and Red Owl will deliver a comprehensive national impact campaign alongside the release.

The doc is timely given the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade in June, effectively striking down the ruling that has guaranteed basic abortion rights in the U.S. since 1973.

‘Borat’ Breakout Maria Bakalova Joins Sofia Coppola-Produced ‘Fairyland’ And Jerry Seinfeld’s Pop-Tart Pic ‘Unfrosted’ For Netflix
Image
Exclusive: Maria Bakalova (Bodies Bodies Bodies) has joined the casts of Andrew Durham’s feature directorial debut Fairyland for American Zoetrope, and Jerry Seinfeld’s first film Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story for Netflix. Details as to the roles she’ll be playing in the features have not been disclosed, though we hear she’ll only be making a cameo in the latter.

Fairyland is a father-daughter coming-of-age story that Durham adapted from Alysia Abbott’s Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father. The book originally published by W. W. Norton & Company in 2012 is set against San Francisco’s vibrant cultural scene of the 1970s and ’80s, both before and after the AIDS epidemic — a crisis that would ultimately claim the life of Abbott’s father, the widowed poet and gay activist, Steve Abbott. Bakalova joins an ensemble led by Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy, which also includes Geena Davis, Cody Fern,...

Safe Space Pictures Foundation Launches With Funding for Projects Including ‘Fairyland,’ ‘Battleground’ (Exclusive)
Image
Close to a decade after American Zoetrope announced that the company had acquired the screen rights to Alysia Abbott’s “Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father,” the film adaptation has finally been made with the help of Safe Space Pictures Foundation.

The newly-launched funding entity was founded by producer Nicole Shipley to champion women and underrepresented voices in the entertainment industry by providing support to issue-driven documentary and narrative projects via equity, debt, and grant funding. Safe Space is currently working on ten nonfiction and narrative projects at various stages in production. The foundation’s investments in film or television projects range between 250,000 and 2 million.

“We take risks just like other investors, but our returns are measured in lasting, positive change,” says Jeff Sobrato, the foundation’s co-founder, and board chair. “Our model gives our collaborators the latitude to tell stories no one else will.”

Shipley and Sobrato will serve as executive producers on “Fairyland,...

Tar Trailer Awakens Ancient Monsters at Drive-Ins Everywhere This Halloween
Image
1091 Pictures has unveiled a new trailer for Tar. During a normal Halloween season, we would have some major studio horror flicks competing for dollars at the box office. This year, Halloween Kills was supposed to be among them. But 2020 is no typical year. Fear not though, as genre lovers will still have options. In this case, we have a new creature feature from filmmaker Aaron Wolf, who is taking some inspiration from real life.

Tar draws its inspiration from the famed Los Angeles La Brea Tar Pits. The movie posits that in these pits lies an ancient secret. A creature that is awakened by underground construction and turns five peoples' last night together into an ugly one. The studio will be bringing the movie to drive-ins early next month before later making it available via digital retailers, for those who would prefer to enjoy it from the comfort of home.

Some films are almost better experienced with a little bit of background knowledge. I know that goes against the idea of spoilers, but a little information about the plot or the characters can sometimes be the dash of hot sauce in the ramen noodles. It can set it apart from being collectively associated with a particular type of formulaic comfort genre that might have lost its flavor.

Case in point, when “Grabbers’ came out, knowing that being drunk was the only defense against the creatures, made me elevate it above any other contemporary creature flick that I had access to at the time. Then again, there are films, and in...

First Details on Buddy Hutchins Starring Jamie Kennedy; Exclusive Behind-the-Scenes Still
Veteran actor Jamie Kennedy has a huge and diverse slew of acting credits on his resume; however, it's safe to say that even with his years of work in Hollywood, he's never experienced anything quite like Buddy Hutchins.

Kennedy (pictured) plays the title character in Buddy Hutchins, which is filming now and scheduled for a mid-2014 release. It's been described as a more horror-themed version of Michael Douglas' memorable 1993 film Falling Down, making it an extremely dark turn for Kennedy, who, according to all reports, is absolutely sizzling in the role.

Buddy Hutchins is a Traplight Media and Richard Switzer Entertainment Group film written and directed by Jared Cohn. Alongside Kennedy it stars Sally Kirkland, Sara Malakul Lane and Erin O'Brien. Also featured are David Gere, Steve Hanks and Nicole Alexandra Shipley.

The film's producers are Richard Switzer, who happens to be the youngest producer ever at just 18 years of age,...
