‘Promised Land’ Canceled By ABC After One Season
Image
Freshman drama Promised Land will not return for a second season. ABC has canceled the Latinx family drama after a short one-season run.

The news is not surprising. Promised Land, which premiered in January, ranked as ABC’s least watched and lowest-rated scripted series this season and was pulled from the schedule by the network after five episodes, with the remainder of its 10-episode first season released exclusively on Hulu. Promised Land‘s premiere earned a 0.2 demo rating and 1.86 million viewers in Live+Same Day, and the series never found wide audience despite scoring with critics (100 on Rotten Tomatoes).

Promised Land (2022)
‘Promised Land’ to Move From ABC to Hulu After Just 5 Episodes
Promised Land (2022)
“Promised Land” has been pulled from ABC’s primetime schedule after just five episodes. The drama will move to Hulu and finish its 10-episode run there.

The series, which focuses on a Latinx family in Sonoma Valley, has been very low rated in its short run — but critical reviews remain strong. “Promised Land,” which currently averages 2.9 million total viewers per episode, including one week of (mostly) DVR catchup, has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it’s only based on seven critics.

That viewer tally ranks the show 88th on broadcast TV, between ABC game show “The Chase” and NBC sitcom “American Auto.”

“Promised Land” is technically not canceled — yet. There has been no decision about a potential Season 2, an ABC insider told TheWrap.

“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” an ABC spokesperson said. “We know...

‘Promised Land’ Pulled From ABC Schedule, to Finish Season 1 on Hulu
Image
The new ABC drama “Promised Land” is moving over to Hulu.

The drama series premiered on the broadcast network on Jan. 24. Beginning March 1, it will move to the streaming service for the final five episodes of Season 1. The show has been far from a ratings breakout during its initial episodes. Season to date in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings, it is averaging just a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers per episode.

“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” ABC said in a statement. “We know it has a passionate audience that is very invested in this show, and those viewers will be able to stream all subsequent episodes exclusively on Hulu every Tuesday for the rest of the season.”

As a result of the scheduling change, medical drama “The Good Doctor” will return earlier than expected for its midseason premiere.

Promised Land: Grade the Premiere of ABC's Latino Family Sudser
Image
ABC on Monday night uncorked Promised Land, its new Latino family drama set in the wine industry. Did the sudser meet your “grape” expectations?

Promised Land opened with the story of Juana (played by Katya Martín) and Rosa, two young women who illegally crossed the border from Mexico with the end goal of making it to Merced, Calif. for alfalfa-picking work. When ambushed by border patrol trucks, the gals managed to hide with the help of Carlos (Andres Velez), a young man they met along the way. The three then set out for Bakersfield, where Juana heard of someone who...

ABC’s ‘Promised Land’ Combines Smart Family Drama With (Too) Many Soap Twists: TV Review
Image
. It has a sprawling cast spread across two timelines that intersect in a way that sets the show apart, but which ABC nonetheless has barred coverage from mentioning before the show’s Monday premiere. Over the course of the first two episodes screened for critics, “Promised Land” explores the promise and poison of the American dream — a typical lens through which to view wealthy dynasties, but one that has more pointed resonance on this show, which specifically centers Mexican and Mexican-American characters. With beautiful shots of southern California deserts and vineyards, heightened acting, and a sweeping score by Gustavo Santaolalla and Kevin Kiner, “Promised Land” immediately distinguishes itself.

The pilot introduces two storylines: one about Mexican teens (played by Katya Martín and Andres Velez) risking everything to cross the border into the United States to work at a near-mythical vineyard, and another about the rich and powerful people who own it.

Promised Land: ABC's Wine Country Soap Drops Thrilling Trailer
Promised Land (2022)
ABC likes to have a sudsy primetime soap on its midseason roster, and Promised Land looks like a winner.

In the past, we've had one-and-done but highly watchable shows like Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, so we're hoping Promised Land stands the test of time.

The series is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.

The first trailer dropped at the network's panel during the Winter TCA tour, and there was another big announcement regarding the series:

The first two episodes will be available on Hulu the day after the series premiere on ABC, marking the first time ABC programming will be released on Hulu before debuting on the network.

The series premieres Monday, Jan. 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. Est), on ABC, out of The Bachelor.
