Heavily influenced by fellow North Carolina musician Doc Watson. Avett met Doc as a thirteen-year-old when he was invited to Doc's home before one of his shows in Winston-Salem. The experience had a profound impact on Seth's life, and he later wrote about it in an article published in Garden and Gun Magazine after Doc's death.

In addition to his band The Avett Brothers, he has released three solo records under the moniker Timothy Seth Avett as Darling.

Has a notoriously good relationship with his brother and band mate, Scott Avett. Has stated that Scott is his best friend.

Is a fan of hip-hop music. Counts the album "Shadows on the Sun" by hip-hop artist Brother Ali to be one of his top ten favorite albums of all time.

Is the youngest of three children.
