There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”
While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.
Here are more cursed object movies in horror movies we’ll never forget.

“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.
Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.
“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”
Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

From director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), Oddity tells the story of a female psychic attempting to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder by returning to the scene of the crime.
Oddity is all about its atmosphere. Thankfully the filmmakers have clearly put a lot of effort into creating this part of the movie, whether it be through camera work, sound design, the score, or the placement of jump scares. It all feels incredibly well thought out.
I’m sure many people viewing it will see it as one of the scariest films they have ever seen and that claim would be justified. It does an excellent job of building up two or three really good jump scares. And even knowing that doesn’t hinder the moments because you...

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out, it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 18 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

A strong cast and a spooky mannequin deliver heavy gothic frisson as a blind woman investigates her sister’s unnatural death
This deft Irish supernatural horror-cum-clairvoyant detective story delivers heavy frisson with minimal means: little more than the creepy recesses of a Grand Designs-style fixer-upper, a lifesize ventriloquist’s dummy howling to the furies, and some stringent performances. Also featuring occasional cutaways to a psychiatric hospital, it pays fealty to the gothic tradition, but is reminiscent of J-horror too in its antsy focus on an atmosphere of liminality that threatens to coalesce into something malevolent.
Squatting inside the country pile she is renovating with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), who runs the local mental asylum, Dani (Carolyn Bracken) is confronted with one of his patients at her door one night. Despite his glass eye, the man claims to have spotted a shady interloper slip into the house behind her – and demands to be let in.

It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.
That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

Horror, namely how it finds its audience, continues to evolve in ways that confound studio executives and in the process prove the durability of the genre. For all the hand-wringing about supposed “horror fatigue” and the persistent urge to bury a genre that’s remained profitable even in (oftentimes especially in) the worst of times, 2024 proved once again that demons and psychos and killer clowns are as popular as they’ve ever been—just not necessarily those that have a big studio label seared into their clammy flesh.
If horror in the 2010s was dominated by aging juggernauts like Paramount and molded by the growing dominance of younger, hipper, genre-focused studios like A24 and Blumhouse, the chaotic 2020s are, fittingly, increasingly being shaped by less predictable players. Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, distributed by Cineverse, kicked Joker: Folie à Deux to the curb in its first weekend, and now it...

Writer-director Damien Mc Carthy’s Oddity didn’t have the splashy marketing of, say, Longlegs, but it’s a corking horror you don’t want to miss.
Anticipation is the lifeblood of a good horror yarn, and writer-director Damien Mc Carthy creates an ingeniously tense scenario in his low-budget shocker, Oddity. A golem-like wooden effigy sits at a dining table in a spacious yet austere converted barn in a remote part of Ireland. Its mouth is frozen in a silent scream; its hands sit flat on the table as though it’s performing some sort of seance.
For a large chunk of his engagingly twisty narrative, Mc Carthy invites us to wonder: what is this thing? Is it going to move? And if so when, and what will it do?
Taking in just a handful of (largely interior) locations, Oddity feels like a welcome throwback to the quintessentially British horror of something like Amicus Productions,...

Fresh off her starring role in Shudder’s Oddity, Carolyn Bracken is next set to star in the horror movie Beasts of Prey, and Variety has shared a first look image this week (above).
PiperFilm is launching sales on the project at the American Film Market this week.
In the upcoming Beasts of Prey, being described as a psychological thriller, “Bracken plays a rich art collector whose life is shattered by a tragic event.
“Destroyed by this unbearable pain, an instinctive and primordial nature awakens in her that will lead her to destroy her privileged life and build a new idea of family.”
Beasts of Prey is also being advertised as a “complex and thrilling story about the never-ending struggle between the rational and the animal side of human nature.”
Andrea Corsini directs the movie, which expands her own short film.

Every year, there are outstanding performances that horror fans have come to accept probably won’t get the awards recognition they deserve due to their genre. Obviously, there are notable exceptions; but for every Kathy Bates in “Misery,” there’s Toni Collette in “Hereditary.”
It’s unfortunate that horror isn’t held in higher esteem, as it’s genuinely one of the hardest to get right. It’s a tricky balance, and it can easily go awry. One false move and your over-the-top turns will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. This year, in particular, has been great not only for genre films but also for the actors in them. In a just world, here are some of this year’s actors who would be recognized by Oscar voters.
Hugh Grant, “Heretic”
Perhaps the strongest shot at breaking into the race, the always reliable Grant is perfectly cast as Mr.

As a visionary modern horror filmmaker, Mike Flanagan's views on the genre are well worth listening to. Through his work in both film and TV, Flanagan has used horror to explore personal and emotional stories. Films like Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor have wonderful intersection and character work, while never losing sight of what makes the genre great, and providing the audience with genuine scares. However, beyond being scary on their own terms, Flanagan's projects invariably demonstrate his respect for the broader genre and reveal several major influences.
Flanagan has a love for all types of horror, from ghosts to vampires, and everything in between. The director has consistently shown appreciation for all kinds of things that go bump in the night, both in his own films and through the kinds of movies he recommends. In external interviews and on his own social channels,...

Starring Carolyn Bracken, Gwilym Lee, Johnny French, Steve Wall, and Caroline Menton, among others, the Shudder original tells the story of a psychic medium as she attempts to uncover the truth about her sister's murder, with Oddity reviews praising the scares, atmosphere, and filmmaking.

“Oddity” is a horror movie written and ddirected by Damian McCarthy starring Gwilym Lee and Carolyn Bracken.
“Oddity” is a cinematic gem that had flown completely under my radar until its premiere.

I can't recommend Oddity enough to Daily Dead readers. From writer / director Damian Mc Carthy the film plays like an Amicus horror film segment, with excellent acting, and enough scares to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I had the chance to talk with Damian Mc Carthy, who spoke about his love of horror, and the making of the film:
I loved Oddity and it's very clear from watching the film how much you love the horror genre. Can you talk about your early experiences watching horror movies?
Damian Mc Carthy: My parents had a VHS store when I was growing up, so I was always in the horror section. My dad was a big horror fan, so he was always showing me '80s movies, like Poltergeist and Alien. So that's where the love of it began, and I just wanted to know more about it,...

Oddity blends horror and paranormal elements to create a genuinely creepy and unsettling experience. The cast's performances amplify the stakes of the story, keeping viewers on their toes. The film successfully blends horror with a compelling mystery, engaging the audience from start to finish.
The paranormal and the horror mix together in Oddity , creating an authentically hair-raising experience that is as unsettling as it is terrifying. Not only does the horror film infuse its story with mystifying elements, but it injects it with domestic complications that make for an intriguing storyline. Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, Oddity had me at the edge of my seat, even in its most predictable moments.

Oddity, the latest by writer/director Damian McCarthy, out now in theaters, offers a chill-inducing tale of supernatural revenge with one creepy mannequin at the center. One intense murder incites a feature-length trap of ghostly karma and justice.
The film stars Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother) as twin sisters Dani and Darcy. When Dani is brutally murdered at the remote country house that she’s renovating with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), the suspect dies soon after. But Darcy, a blind medium and oddity shop owner, arrives at Ted’s home a year later under the conviction that there’s more to Dani’s death than meets the eye, and she’s brought a creepy wooden mannequin with her to get meticulously crafted retribution.

Writer/director Damian Mc Carthy's "Oddity" is one of the best horror movies of 2024. The small-scale Irish film has an absolutely killer opening scene: A woman named Dani (Carolyn Bracken) is alone in an empty house while her husband works the night shift at a nearby asylum. Dani leaves her front door open for a minute while she searches for something in her car outside, and when she returns to the house, there's a knock at the door. A former occupant of the asylum named Olin (Tadgh Murphy) is there in the dark, claiming that he witnessed someone slip into the house unnoticed while she was in the car. He's asking her to let him inside so he can help her, and Dani is understandably shaken at this suggestion: She doesn't know this man, and she didn't see anyone enter the house. But what if he's right? What should she do?...

It’s busy and Twister-y at the box office this weekend, but a few indies are hoping to catch a breeze with very well-reviewed Oddity looking to expand the market for high-end horror and Widow Clicquot to attract fans of good period films and bubbly.

Oddity has received an impressive 98% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, surpassing higher-profile horror films of 2024. Despite having a lower-profile cast and director, Oddity has outpaced big-budget horror flicks in critical acclaim. The strong premise of Oddity, combined with its stellar Rotten Tomatoes score, may lead to success at the box office.
The new 2024 horror film Oddity has made a great Rotten Tomatoes debut. Oddity is a horror-thriller about the fallout of the brutal murder of a woman named Dani in her remote house. The primary suspect is a man from the local mental institution that Dani's husband, Ted, is a doctor at, but years later, Dani's twin sister Darcy comes back to Ted's home, as she suspects that something more sinister is at play surrounding her sister's murder. Oddity was directed by Damian McCarthy and stars a leading cast including Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, and Caroline Menton.

Oddity begins with a delicious horror conundrum. Alone in her newly purchased country house while her psychiatrist husband Ted (Gwylim Lee) works an overnight shift nearby, Dani (Carolyn Bracken) runs out into the dark to retrieve something from her car. When she hears a strange noise, she rushes back into the house and locks the door.
The sounds from outside intensify, prompting Dani to open a slot on the door, revealing a shocking sight: a haggard and intense man, staring at her with one glowing glass eye. The man begs Dani to let him in, a request she denies until he comes to the point. The man claims that he someone else is inside her house. He pleads with her to open the door before it’s too late. Despite his intimidating appearance, the man seems sincere and kind. What should Dani do?

There are points in Damian Mc Carthy’s tightly wound horror thriller when you will stop and mentally rewind, reassessing what you have previously seen. Hearing someone enter her antique shop, blind Darcy (Carolyn Bracken) calls out a warning: don’t risk stealing anything, because every item there carries a curse which will only be lifted when money changes hands. She’s a clever woman, but then so was her sister. Too clever, she thinks, to have opened the door of her remote home to a strange man in the middle of the night. Some other cleverness must have led to her death, and now, having acquired a very special object, Darcy is going to find out what. But wait. Is this a trick being played on the audience? Does she already know?

Back in 2020 Damian McCarthy gave the indie horror world goosebumps with his debut feature Caveat, a creeping Irish horror that seeped into your bones and sent a chill down your spine. Now, McCarthy is back with Oddity, another haunting classic in the making, tailor-made for fans of Tales From The Crypt, and anyone who loves a good murder mystery. Especially a good murder mystery with g-g-g-ghosts.
Oddity concerns blind psychic + oddities shop owner Darcy, investigating the sudden & violent death if her twin Dani. Both roles, in fact, are played by Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother) who absolutely knocks it out of the paranormal park. Her co-star (making his screen debut): a terrifying wooden doll! You see, Darcy isn’t quite satisfied with the police’s investigation into her sister’s death, and so, she invites herself into her brother-in-law’s new home/former murder scene to have a look around for herself.

We’re midway through the month of July with only a few more weeks to the summer, and it’s time to get into the next potential mega-blockbuster, “Twisters.” Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Summer blockbusters have existed for as long as Steven Spielberg has been making movies, but it was only in the mid-’90s when studios realized that they could create movies considered “event viewing” that moviegoers would want to rush out to see opening weekend. The Jan De Bont-directed “Twister,” co-written by Michael Crichton (and actually executive produced by Spielberg through his Amblin company), was one of these back in 1996. Starring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, as well as an ensemble cast that included Philip Seymour Hoffman, Cary Elwes, and even future filmmaker, Todd Field, it opened with $41 million in its early May 1996 release, which was good for that time. One of the creepiest films of 2024 lies just around the corner. Oddity, releasing in theaters and on Shudder, seeks to build on horror’s amazing 2024. When a woman ends up dead at her remote house, blame for her murder falls on a mentally ill man. The truth may not be so cut and dry. A haunting, ghastly rituals and a wooden man only begin to highlight the darkness present within Oddity. Directed by Damian Mc Carthy, the slow-burn horror joins a thriving series of genre flicks this year. Damian Mc Carthy's "Oddity" has a killer opening scene — the type of memorable beginning that lets you know you're in for something special. Evening is descending on a sprawling, remote house somewhere in the Irish countryside. Dani (Carolyn Bracken), who is fixing up the house, briefly speaks on the phone with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), who is stuck at the asylum where he works. Dani will be spending the night in the big, empty house all alone, and that doesn't seem to bother her. At least at first. Then, night sets in. Dani can't find her phone. She heads outside to check her car but comes up empty and returns to the house, closing and locking the door behind her.
And then there's a loud knock. Looking through a square porthole in the door, Dani sees an unkempt man with a distinct white glass eye. The man (Tadhg Murphy...

With Caveat, Damian McCarthy layered mystery upon mystery to create a haunting thriller about isolation. The Irish filmmaker’s latest, Oddity, follows a similarly twist-laden blueprint. The plot exudes a pulpy sense of escalation, defined by a collision of convoluted story threads that might, in lesser hands, have devolved into unintentional comedy.
After all, the central image of Oddity verges on the ludicrous: a horrible wooden mannequin planted at the head of a dinner table, mouth frozen in a silent scream. The ornament belongs to Darcy (Carolyn Bracken), the blind, silver-haired twin sister of Dani (also Bracken), who was murdered while renovating the very house that Darcy visits not long into the film. The apparent culprit was a mental patient, Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), recently discharged from the asylum where Dani’s husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee), is a doctor. In the first minutes of “Oddity,” a woman is faced with an impossible choice. She is home alone while her doctor husband works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. A strange man missing an eye shows up at her door. He claims not to be a threat and informs the resident that someone else, who is trying to hurt her, is already inside the large and isolated home. Should she open the door for this figure or ignore his warning? The nerve-racking scenario takes hold of one’s anxieties and sets the tone for an unsettling ride, which IFC will release theatrically before the film streams on Shudder.

With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

Oddity explores deep fears surrounding death, using ambiguous settings and a unique story concept. The film features interconnected characters and a mysterious mannequin, creating an eerie atmosphere. Filmmaker Damian McCarthy drew inspiration from his childhood love of horror films for Oddity.
A film that spans the various subgenres of horror, Oddity made its debut last week at the 2024 South by Southwest Festival. Born of a childhood love of horror films fed by parents who owned a video rental store in Ireland, Writer and director Damian McCarthy wanted to tell a story about someone who feared what comes after death more than dying itself. Wanting to lend to the unease that comes from horror itself, he made the setting of the film as ambiguous as possible. Oddity stars Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, Caroline Menton, Jonathan French, and Steve Wall.
