11 Terrifying Cursed Objects in Horror Movies That Will Haunt You
Image
There are plenty of haunted houses — and hotels and summer camps — in horror movies, but some of the most disturbing cinematic scares are thanks to evil objects. Like the eponymous toy in Oz Perkins’ new movie “The Monkey,” his follow-up to last year’s “Longlegs.”

While some things are obviously not going to be good news, like the hand of a dead man, any inanimate object can be cursed, whether it’s a TV, video tape, or mirror.

Here are more cursed object movies in horror movies we’ll never forget.

Severance Star Adam Scott to Lead New Supernatural Horror Film From Acclaimed Director
Image
Severance star Adam Scott is set to lead the upcoming supernatural horror movie Hokum. Damian McCarthy, who helmed the acclaimed 2024 film Oddity, will direct.

Per Variety, Hokum will begin shooting in Ireland later this month. The movie will see Scott play a horror novelist who visits a remote Irish inn to spread his parents' ashes. The location is rumored to be haunted by a witch, a fact Scott's character is oblivious to. Bad Sisters' Peter Coonan and Bodkin's David Wilmot will also star in the film that marks Scott's return to the genre after previously appearing in other projects such as Hellraiser: Bloodline, Little Evil, Krampus, and Piranha 3D.

'Oddity' Director Casts Adam Scott in New Horror Movie 'Hokum'
Image
While most people recognize Adam Scott these days for his starring role in Apple TV's Severance, he's certainly no stranger to the horror genre. He's appeared in the likes of Krampus, Piranha 3D, and Hellraiser: Bloodline, and will be featured next in Osgood Perkins' The Monkey. He's also been tapped to headline the new flick by Irish director Damian McCarthy, which comes hot on the heels of his 2024 breakout hit Oddity.

Per Variety, Scott will star in the supernatural horror film Hokum, which is slated to begin filming in Ireland later this month. This will mark only McCarthy's third feature, following not only Oddity last year, but 2020's Caveat, which was equally unhinged (remember the bunny?). Peter Coonan (Bad Sisters) and David Wilmot (Bodkin) are also on board to star, and based on the brief synopsis below, it appears as if McCarthy is sticking with what he does best,...

‘Kneecap’ Dominates Irish Academy Awards Nominations With 17 Nods
Image
“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.

Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.

“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

‘Oddity’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, Caroline Menton, Steve Wall, Johnny French | Written and Directed by Damian McCarthy

From director Damian McCarthy (Caveat), Oddity tells the story of a female psychic attempting to get to the bottom of her twin sister’s murder by returning to the scene of the crime.

Oddity is all about its atmosphere. Thankfully the filmmakers have clearly put a lot of effort into creating this part of the movie, whether it be through camera work, sound design, the score, or the placement of jump scares. It all feels incredibly well thought out.

I’m sure many people viewing it will see it as one of the scariest films they have ever seen and that claim would be justified. It does an excellent job of building up two or three really good jump scares. And even knowing that doesn’t hinder the moments because you...

2024 is nearly over, and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year, I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. Oddity review – deft Irish horror gets great value from ventriloquist’s dummy
Gwilym Lee
A strong cast and a spooky mannequin deliver heavy gothic frisson as a blind woman investigates her sister’s unnatural death

This deft Irish supernatural horror-cum-clairvoyant detective story delivers heavy frisson with minimal means: little more than the creepy recesses of a Grand Designs-style fixer-upper, a lifesize ventriloquist’s dummy howling to the furies, and some stringent performances. Also featuring occasional cutaways to a psychiatric hospital, it pays fealty to the gothic tradition, but is reminiscent of J-horror too in its antsy focus on an atmosphere of liminality that threatens to coalesce into something malevolent.

Squatting inside the country pile she is renovating with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), who runs the local mental asylum, Dani (Carolyn Bracken) is confronted with one of his patients at her door one night. Despite his glass eye, the man claims to have spotted a shady interloper slip into the house behind her – and demands to be let in.

Bloody Disgusting’s Top 15 Best Horror Movies of 2024
Image
It should be no surprise that, as another year winds to a close, horror continued to dominate in 2024. Terrifier 3, for example, became the highest-grossing Unrated movie in box office history, throwing all the indie cinema rules out the window in the process. Longlegs caught everyone off guard, becoming Neon‘s highest-grossing film upon release in July, and streaming service Mubi smartly acquired the body horror movie The Substance, where it became the platform’s highest-grossing film at the box office.

That doesn’t even touch on the huge studio earners like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, or Alien: Romulus. Yet the surprises extend well beyond how well horror performed at the box office; 2024 horror is defined by the way it refused to stay within its tidy genre bounds.

This is reflected in the way that 2024 horror found new angles to push franchises forward through prequels and sequels,...

The 10 Best Horror Films of 2024
Image
Horror, namely how it finds its audience, continues to evolve in ways that confound studio executives and in the process prove the durability of the genre. For all the hand-wringing about supposed “horror fatigue” and the persistent urge to bury a genre that’s remained profitable even in (oftentimes especially in) the worst of times, 2024 proved once again that demons and psychos and killer clowns are as popular as they’ve ever been—just not necessarily those that have a big studio label seared into their clammy flesh.

If horror in the 2010s was dominated by aging juggernauts like Paramount and molded by the growing dominance of younger, hipper, genre-focused studios like A24 and Blumhouse, the chaotic 2020s are, fittingly, increasingly being shaped by less predictable players. Damien Leone’s Terrifier 3, distributed by Cineverse, kicked Joker: Folie à Deux to the curb in its first weekend, and now it...

Joseph McCarthy
Oddity | This low-budget British horror is one of 2024’s finest
Joseph McCarthy
Writer-director Damien Mc Carthy’s Oddity didn’t have the splashy marketing of, say, Longlegs, but it’s a corking horror you don’t want to miss.

Anticipation is the lifeblood of a good horror yarn, and writer-director Damien Mc Carthy creates an ingeniously tense scenario in his low-budget shocker, Oddity. A golem-like wooden effigy sits at a dining table in a spacious yet austere converted barn in a remote part of Ireland. Its mouth is frozen in a silent scream; its hands sit flat on the table as though it’s performing some sort of seance.

For a large chunk of his engagingly twisty narrative, Mc Carthy invites us to wonder: what is this thing? Is it going to move? And if so when, and what will it do?

Taking in just a handful of (largely interior) locations, Oddity feels like a welcome throwback to the quintessentially British horror of something like Amicus Productions,...

Oscar-Worthy 2024 Horror Performances: Hugh Grant, Margaret Qualley and More
Image
Every year, there are outstanding performances that horror fans have come to accept probably won’t get the awards recognition they deserve due to their genre. Obviously, there are notable exceptions; but for every Kathy Bates in “Misery,” there’s Toni Collette in “Hereditary.”

It’s unfortunate that horror isn’t held in higher esteem, as it’s genuinely one of the hardest to get right. It’s a tricky balance, and it can easily go awry. One false move and your over-the-top turns will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. This year, in particular, has been great not only for genre films but also for the actors in them. In a just world, here are some of this year’s actors who would be recognized by Oscar voters.

Hugh Grant, “Heretic”

Perhaps the strongest shot at breaking into the race, the always reliable Grant is perfectly cast as Mr.

15 Great Horror Movies Recommended By Mike Flanagan
Image
As a visionary modern horror filmmaker, Mike Flanagan's views on the genre are well worth listening to. Through his work in both film and TV, Flanagan has used horror to explore personal and emotional stories. Films like Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor have wonderful intersection and character work, while never losing sight of what makes the genre great, and providing the audience with genuine scares. However, beyond being scary on their own terms, Flanagan's projects invariably demonstrate his respect for the broader genre and reveal several major influences.

Flanagan has a love for all types of horror, from ghosts to vampires, and everything in between. The director has consistently shown appreciation for all kinds of things that go bump in the night, both in his own films and through the kinds of movies he recommends. In external interviews and on his own social channels,...

Science Names 2024 Irish Horror Movie Oddity One of the Scariest Films Ever Made
Image
Every year, the Science of Scare project gathers together 250 people to help determine the most frightening horror movies ever made. While Scott Derricksons 2012 film Sinister and the 2020 UK film Host have been trading the top spots since the project began in 2020, a new independent horror movie has emerged out of Ireland this year to crack the Top 20, beating out a number of other 2024 films that were nowhere to be seen.

According to science, Damian McCarthys Oddity is now one of the scariest horror movies in history based on the data that was collected from a fresh group of 250 people that screened a plethora of spooky films throughout the year. Premiering at the South by Southwest festival back in March, Oddity made its way to the streaming service Shudder on September 27, and has been giving people the creeps ever since. 2024 Horror Movie With 96% Rotten Tomatoes Score Becomes Streaming Hit
Image
Oddity has become a major streaming hit after earning 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Directed by Damian McCarthy, the Irish horror film premiered at SXSW in spring 2024, where it was met with a glowing reception from those in attendance. Starring Carolyn Bracken, Gwilym Lee, Johnny French, Steve Wall, and Caroline Menton, among others, the Shudder original tells the story of a psychic medium as she attempts to uncover the truth about her sister's murder, with Oddity reviews praising the scares, atmosphere, and filmmaking.

New data from Reelgood now reveals that Oddity ranks as the tenth most popular movie on streaming in the U.S. for the week of October 3 9. The movie, which is available to watch on Shudder and AMC+, falls short of titles like Killer Heat (2024), Inside Out 2 (2024), Challengers (2024), and Apartment 7A (2024).

With Halloween approaching, the top 10 list features a number of horror tiles, including one in the top position.

‘Oddity’ Star Carolyn Bracken, Caroline Goodall to Star in Italy-Set Horror Movie ‘Beasts of Prey’ (Exclusive)
Image
Carolyn Bracken, who plays the blind protagonist of Damian McCarthy’s recent chiller “Oddity,” and veteran character actress Caroline Goodall are set to star in Italian director Andrea Corsini’s psychological horror film “Beasts of Prey.”

Cameras recently started rolling in Italy’s northern regions of Lombardy and Piedmont on the English-language “Beasts of Prey,” which is being described as a “complex and thrilling story about the never-ending struggle between the rational and the animal side of human nature” in promotional materials.

“Beasts of Prey,” which is Corsini’s first feature, expands on the director’s short by the same title — about a strange woman who lives in an abandoned villa on the edge of a wild forest — that launched from the 2019 Venice Film Festival’s Critics’ Week.

“The life of a rich art collector is shattered by a tragic event. Destroyed by this unbearable pain, an instinctive and primordial...

Image
Quick Links Oddity Burrows Under the Skin as It Peels Back Layers Oddity Is Bizzare, Patient, and Efficiently Terrifying Oddity Represents the Best of Modern Horror

As one of the most consistently popular movie genres for over a century now, the world of horror movies has evolved in some amazing ways over the decades. Between social media and streaming services that help new generations discover the classics for the first time, mainstream horror has become more popular than ever among contemporary audiences. However, this usually means the demand for major productions and mainstream films is always high.

Given that these films often command higher budgets and all the bells and whistles that come with major studio backing, they usually have a significant advantage over foreign or indie horror films. However, for a while now, there have been a lot of complaints from horror fanatics over the absence of good horror...

Trap Review: M. Night Shyamalan Contends with and Confounds Audience Expectations
Image
Moviegoing etiquette means not doing things that will disturb your fellow attendees' experience. Talking, smoking, texting, participating in a sance by candlelight, crinkling candy wrappers for more than a few seconds (it's alright if you've got a tickle in your throat; just be courteous), and eating a whole rotisserie chicken are just a few examples of things one should avoid doing at all costs at a movie theater. Once the credits roll and audiences are dumped back into the real world, one final note is just as crucial as in-theater manners: don't talk about the film until you're out of earshot from queued patrons.

It's always the case that people should be considerate that some haven't seen a film, but there are few things worse (in terms of seeing a movie) than waiting in line and someone who caught a matinee showing us saying something along the lines of, "I...

Fantasia 2024: ‘Oddity’ Review

Interview with Oddity’s Writer / Director Damian Mc Carthy
Image
I can't recommend Oddity enough to Daily Dead readers. From writer / director Damian Mc Carthy the film plays like an Amicus horror film segment, with excellent acting, and enough scares to keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. I had the chance to talk with Damian Mc Carthy, who spoke about his love of horror, and the making of the film:

I loved Oddity and it's very clear from watching the film how much you love the horror genre. Can you talk about your early experiences watching horror movies?

Damian Mc Carthy: My parents had a VHS store when I was growing up, so I was always in the horror section. My dad was a big horror fan, so he was always showing me '80s movies, like Poltergeist and Alien. So that's where the love of it began, and I just wanted to know more about it,...

Oddity Review: I Was Genuinely Creeped Out Watching This Unnerving Paranormal Horror Film
Image
Oddity blends horror and paranormal elements to create a genuinely creepy and unsettling experience. The cast's performances amplify the stakes of the story, keeping viewers on their toes. The film successfully blends horror with a compelling mystery, engaging the audience from start to finish.

The paranormal and the horror mix together in Oddity , creating an authentically hair-raising experience that is as unsettling as it is terrifying. Not only does the horror film infuse its story with mystifying elements, but it injects it with domestic complications that make for an intriguing storyline. Written and directed by Damian Mc Carthy, Oddity had me at the edge of my seat, even in its most predictable moments.

The Director Of One Of 2024's Scariest Films Didn't Realize What A Big Risk He Was Taking [Exclusive]
Image
Writer/director Damian Mc Carthy's "Oddity" is one of the best horror movies of 2024. The small-scale Irish film has an absolutely killer opening scene: A woman named Dani (Carolyn Bracken) is alone in an empty house while her husband works the night shift at a nearby asylum. Dani leaves her front door open for a minute while she searches for something in her car outside, and when she returns to the house, there's a knock at the door. A former occupant of the asylum named Olin (Tadgh Murphy) is there in the dark, claiming that he witnessed someone slip into the house unnoticed while she was in the car. He's asking her to let him inside so he can help her, and Dani is understandably shaken at this suggestion: She doesn't know this man, and she didn't see anyone enter the house. But what if he's right? What should she do?...

Oddity Review: Irish Horror Keeps You Guessing at Every Strange Turn
Image
Seeing double? Well, someone in Oddity isn't seeing at all, but that won't stop her from literally taking names seeking the truth, justice, and a whole lot more. It's a wild tale that showcases the vast talents of Irish actress Carolyn Bracken (star of the Oscar-nominated The Quiet Girl) as twin sisters, one of whom meets her fate too darn early and thus kickstarts a wild ride that will tickle the fancies of horror-thriller fans everywhere.

Written and directed by Damian McCarthy, Oddity may take a wee bit too long for its revenge-karma tale to get off the ground, but once its twisty story levitates into the nailbiting second and third acts, you'll be begging for more by the time the credits roll. IFC Films seems to be scooping up quite a few innovative scary projects these days, following the terrific In a Violent Nature earlier this year. And now,...

Oddity Review: Damian McCarthy's Horror is Neither Odd, Nor Even That Interesting
Image
It may be informal, but the implied agreement between audiences and horror filmmakers is no less important for not being signed and notarized. Audiences attending a film deemed 'horror' should, at the very least, be subjected to something, anything, really, that is horrifying. However, the degree to which something can be deemed as such is contingent upon individual viewpoints. For some, even the most softcore of petting can elicit goosebumps, curled toes, and walkouts. For others, it takes a grotesque, creative reconfiguration of the human body -- a head placed where an arm should be, legs placed elsewhere entirely (to provide a couple of examples) -- to stir the senses.

Oddity, the latest film from director Damian McCarthy (Caveat) violates this agreement. Each new scene presents a series of promptly disregarded clauses -- stones left entirely unturned. While watching the film, one can't help but think, "Surely, something will happen,...

New 2024 Horror Thriller Led By Bohemian Rhapsody Star Debuts With Near Perfect Score On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Oddity has received an impressive 98% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, surpassing higher-profile horror films of 2024. Despite having a lower-profile cast and director, Oddity has outpaced big-budget horror flicks in critical acclaim. The strong premise of Oddity, combined with its stellar Rotten Tomatoes score, may lead to success at the box office.

The new 2024 horror film Oddity has made a great Rotten Tomatoes debut. Oddity is a horror-thriller about the fallout of the brutal murder of a woman named Dani in her remote house. The primary suspect is a man from the local mental institution that Dani's husband, Ted, is a doctor at, but years later, Dani's twin sister Darcy comes back to Ted's home, as she suspects that something more sinister is at play surrounding her sister's murder. Oddity was directed by Damian McCarthy and stars a leading cast including Gwilym Lee, Carolyn Bracken, Tadhg Murphy, and Caroline Menton.

Oddity Review: Irish Horror Movie Is Eerie If Uneven
Image
Oddity begins with a delicious horror conundrum. Alone in her newly purchased country house while her psychiatrist husband Ted (Gwylim Lee) works an overnight shift nearby, Dani (Carolyn Bracken) runs out into the dark to retrieve something from her car. When she hears a strange noise, she rushes back into the house and locks the door.

The sounds from outside intensify, prompting Dani to open a slot on the door, revealing a shocking sight: a haggard and intense man, staring at her with one glowing glass eye. The man begs Dani to let him in, a request she denies until he comes to the point. The man claims that he someone else is inside her house. He pleads with her to open the door before it’s too late. Despite his intimidating appearance, the man seems sincere and kind. What should Dani do?

It’s no spoiler to say that...

Oddity - Jennie Kermode - 19157
Carolyn Bracken
There are points in Damian Mc Carthy’s tightly wound horror thriller when you will stop and mentally rewind, reassessing what you have previously seen. Hearing someone enter her antique shop, blind Darcy (Carolyn Bracken) calls out a warning: don’t risk stealing anything, because every item there carries a curse which will only be lifted when money changes hands. She’s a clever woman, but then so was her sister. Too clever, she thinks, to have opened the door of her remote home to a strange man in the middle of the night. Some other cleverness must have led to her death, and now, having acquired a very special object, Darcy is going to find out what. But wait. Is this a trick being played on the audience? Does she already know?

When exploring the supernatural in fiction, there is always a danger of succumbing the temptation offered by dei ex machinas.

Oddity Review: A Haunting Murder Mystery with a Paranormal Punch (and A Creepy Mannequin Too!)
Image
Back in 2020 Damian McCarthy gave the indie horror world goosebumps with his debut feature Caveat, a creeping Irish horror that seeped into your bones and sent a chill down your spine. Now, McCarthy is back with Oddity, another haunting classic in the making, tailor-made for fans of Tales From The Crypt, and anyone who loves a good murder mystery. Especially a good murder mystery with g-g-g-ghosts.

Oddity concerns blind psychic + oddities shop owner Darcy, investigating the sudden & violent death if her twin Dani. Both roles, in fact, are played by Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother) who absolutely knocks it out of the paranormal park. Her co-star (making his screen debut): a terrifying wooden doll! You see, Darcy isn’t quite satisfied with the police’s investigation into her sister’s death, and so, she invites herself into her brother-in-law’s new home/former murder scene to have a look around for herself.
